Where to Find the Best Pho in Hanoi

Bowl of pho

Pho has been in the spotlight quite a bit in recent years, and that’s no bad thing! This has meant that people all over the world have been trying this much-loved Vietnamese classic, quickly joining the dish’s ever-devoted long line of fans. If you’re ready to taste some of the most authentic pho out there, here are the X places in Hanoi to head to.

What is Pho?

If you’re still new to the world of pho, here’s a quick explanation…

Pho, which is pronounced “fuh”, is a Vietnamese rice noodle soup with a slow-cooked, crystal clear broth that is then topped with a colorful array of garnishes. Other condiments are then layered over this, giving you so much texture and flavor with every bite.

Many travel to Vietnam primarily for the purpose of savoring an authentic bowl of pho, with Hanoi being famous for this specialty.

Where about in Hanoi should you go to find the best pho?

Taste your way through this list:

Pho Thin

Located on a tree-lined street in the historic French Quarter district of the city, Pho Thin is mainly frequented by locals, who have no doubts that this is where they can find some of the best pho in town.

Everyone has their own way of making pho, adding in a unique ingredient to give it their own personal twist. Instead of tinkering with the ingredients, Pho Thin prepares their meat in a slightly different way – it is stir fried with garlic before it’s added into the broth, rather than being added in raw. This might not seem like much, but it completely changes the overall flavor of the dish, making it unlike any other pho you’ll taste in Vietnam.

The garlic adds a deep smokiness and caramelization that lingers on the tongue after each bite. Guests also have the option of customizing their pho even more, with ingredients such as:

  • Lime
  • House-made hot sauce
  • Pickled chillis
  • Quay (fried dough sticks to soak up the broth)

Madame Hien

Situated in a 19th century French villa that has been restored to perfection, Madame Hien was created by Vietnam’s most revered French chef; Didier Corlou. Elevated versions of authentic Vietnamese street food is what you’ll find on the menu here, celebrating Vietnamese culture in such a delicious way.

In addition to a classic beef pho, which they make with wagyu beef, Madame Hien also experiments with a few other one-of-a-kind flavors, ensuring that the pho you eat here is one you will never forget.

The foie gras and lemongrass pho is a popular option, and the Scottish salmon pho is also said to be delectable. If you want a little bit of everything, you can opt for a pho with beef, prawns, squid, and seven vegetables, or go for one that has been flavored with celery leaf.

Pho Gia Truyen

Pho Gia Truyen truly is Vietnamese street food at its best. You may need to use a translation app to help you order your food, but the pho you will be rewarded with makes the extra effort more than worthwhile.

Pho Tai Nam (50k; $3sgd) ⭐️ 4.5/5 ⭐️ 🍴Serving only one dish, this speciality #beefpho restaurant is highly popular with a constant crowd during its opening hours of 6am-9am/ 5pm-10pm (closes once it runs out). Voted one of the #bestpho in Hanoi, we had high expectations and won’t disappointed. While the soup wasn’t the tastiest around (maybe cause we were there right at opening and the flavours of the meat hadn’t set in), it was light and refreshing. For a very affordable $3, there was generous amounts of tasty beef of various cuts, making it highly satisfying. 📍Pho Gia Truyen Bat Dan, 49 Bat Dan, Cua Dong, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi, Vietnam #cafehoppingkidshanoi #cafehoppingkidsvietnam #hanoioldquarter

With its simple table and plastic stools, Pho Gia Truyen may not initially look like much, but wait until you taste their pho. The only item on this restaurant’s menu is beef pho, and they really know what they’re doing when it comes to this.

A variety of beef cuts are used in this pho, with the meat always perfectly tender and still blushing pink in the middle. The clear and flavorful broth complements this beautifully.

After your meal, treat yourself to a stroll around the neighborhood, where you will come across the OROGOLD Hanoi store. Stop by for a VIP facial, free product demonstrations, and expert skin care advice.

Duong’s Restaurant

Constantly voted as one of the top restaurants in the city, Duong’s Restaurant is run by Hoang Duong, whose culinary skills have been showcased on Iron Chef Vietnam and Top Chef Vietnam. Classic Vietnamese cuisine is the focus here, and although the menu regularly changes with the seasons, pho is a dish that is always served up.

The pho that you will find at Duong’s Restaurant features quite traditional flavors, but you have the choice of chicken or seafood, in addition to classic beef. Served with herbs, hot sauce, fresh lime and fresh chilli, this is definitely a flavorful soup.

However, there is no denying that the fine dining element holds some appeal too…

While many of the best phos in the city are served up at small street joints who only specialize in that one dish, Duong’s offers up a variety of different appetizers, sides, and mains that you can enjoy with your pho.

Some of the restaurant’s other must-try dishes include:

  • Char-grilled sugarcane pork
  • Banana flower salad
  • Traditional grilled fish
  • Grilled eggplant with spring onion sauce
  • Black sticky rice in coconut milk

Pho Suong

Thanks to its increasing popularity, Pho Suong was able to open a second location in Hanoi, and both serve up the most delicious pho. Although this may not be a large restaurant, huge numbers of visitors flock here daily, so be prepared to queue.

The pho here is simple yet flavorful, and there are usually around four to six options on the daily menu board to choose from. They all consist of beef pho, but make use of a variety of cuts and cooking techniques, from half-done brisket to well-done flank.

Condiments are provided on every table, enabling you to spice up your pho to your liking.

Pho 10

Originally Pho 10 Ly Quoc Sur, this restaurant became so popular that it opened up two other locations in the city, and is now fondly referred to simply as Pho 10. Service here is fast, so don’t expect to lounge around after your meal.

First meal must be pho – beef brisket pho, soup is good but I prefer more more herbs!! #pho10 #adayforfood #goodweather #earnenergytofight #hanoi

A post shared by Sharon😍Food (@sharonlovefood) on Feb 28, 2020 at 7:00am PST

Everything is always cooked exquisitely at Pho 10 – there’s never anything that could be done any better. However, what makes the pho here even more special is the fact that there are six different types of beef pho that you can choose from, each one prepared in a different way.

You should also try ordering an egg with your pho – this will be served in a small bowl of broth, which lightly cooks the egg as it steams. The rich, runny yolk really adds something extra-special to the flavor of the pho.

As an added bonus, the chefs at this restaurant prepare the meals behind glass doors, meaning that you can watch the pho-cooking process take place.

While many of the pho restaurants on this list are only open in the evenings, Pho 10 opens at 6am. This may seem unusually early to some, but pho is a popular breakfast food in Vietnam, so expect to see crowds here early in the morning.

Pho Chay

If you don’t eat meat, then you’re probably feeling a little left out at this point. After all, many of the more traditional pho eateries in Vietnam only serve up beef versions of their famous noodle soup, leaving vegans and vegetarians watching on hungrily.

Don’t worry, head to Pho Chay instead.

“Chay” means vegetarian in English, and vegan pho is exactly what this street-side cafe specializes in. Although it doesn’t contain actual beef, the traditional pho here tastes wonderfully authentic, while their “special” pho, which contains faux chicken and plenty of mushrooms, is equally popular.

Their dry pho is worth tasting too, featuring tofu prepared in different ways and flavorful chunks of seitan.

While you’re here, make the most of the other vegan Vietnamese delights on offer – the fried spring rolls always get incredible reviews.

Pho Bat Dan

While some of the newer pho restaurants in Hanoi have been experimenting with different ingredients and cooking techniques, Pho Bat Dan is all about keeping things traditional.

This restaurant is famous for queuing culture, something that was popular with local restaurants back in the 80’s – being a self-service restaurant, you need to queue to order your food and then take it to your table yourself. This means that you would be best off visiting Pho Bat Dan with another person, so that one of you can reserve a table while the other orders.

If you want to try a super-traditional version of Vietnamese pho, then this is where to go. The bones for the broth here are stewed for hours, giving the broth a deep sweetness that many other restaurants aren’t able to achieve.

The beef is also deliciously tender, melting away in your mouth with each bite.

Pho Ga Cham

Prefer chicken to beef?

More and more restaurants are now cooking up their own version of chicken pho, but pretty much all pho-lovers would agree that the best bowl to be found is at Pho Ga Cham.

The ingredients used in this chicken pho are always of the highest quality, and this is something that you can definitely taste in the soup. Each serving is extremely generous, containing at least five large pieces of chicken.

Also included in each bowl are meatballs and plenty of spring onions, but you can also add on a few extras to make your bowl extra-special, such as eggs or fried dough sticks.

Don’t be put off by the price here either – yes, it may seem to be double that of other pho restaurants, but you really are paying for what you get here!

Pho Cuon Huong Mai

Here’s something a little different for you – pho cuon. The word “pho” actually refers to the noodles, while “cuon” means roll, with the dish pho cuon basically being pho rolls. You will find this dish all over the city, but Pho Cuon Huong Mai is known for serving up the best.

This isn’t technically pho. Instead, the rice batter that is normally used to make noodles is instead rolled up like a spring roll. It is filled with beef and a variety of different herbs, the same that you would top a bowl of pho with, giving you all of those traditional pho flavors but with a completely different texture.

Once you have tried your first authentic bowl of pho, you’ll easily be able to understand why this has become one of Vietnam’s most popular dishes, as well as why it has really taken off all over the world. These bowls of noodle soup may seem quite simple, but the flavors in each one are deep and complex, leaving you always wanting more!

Family-Friendly Fine Dining in London

Afternoon tea display at restaurant

If you love fine dining but have young children, treating your family to a gourmet meal can be tricky. After all, many fine dining restaurants simply aren’t equipped to cater to kids, and they often have age restrictions too.

Well, if you happen to be in London, you don’t need to worry. The city is full of family-friendly fine dining restaurants – here are a few of the best to add to your must-try list.

Heddon Street Kitchen, Soho

Feeling hungry? We’ve got it all sorted with our delicious food 🥘 #Hungry #MondayInspiration

A post shared by Heddon Street Kitchen (@heddonstkitchen) on Sep 16, 2019 at 4:53am PDT

Are you a fan of Gordon Ramsay?

While many are put off by the celebrity chef’s abrasive personality, there isn’t much to criticize when it comes to the food that he creates.

Ramsay has several restaurants in London, one of which is Heddon Street Kitchen, which you will find in the heart of Soho. The interior features a mix of both vintage and modern elements, and while the vibe may be quite relaxed, the food can definitely be considered gourmet.

What sets Heddon Street Kitchen apart when it comes to kids is the fact that the children’s menu has been designed by Tilly Ramsay, Gordon Ramsay’s daughter. It boasts popular child-friendly classics, from scampi and chips to sticky chicken wings, as well as a make-your-own ice cream bar. As you can imagine, this all goes down pretty well with kids.

What wins the parents over is that children are able to dine for free, picking anything they want from the menu.

Wondering what there is for the adults to eat here?

Well, the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dishes are modern and creative, featuring that distinct Gordon Ramsay twist. Whether you want a rare breed Tomahawk steak, a creamy risotto or a fresh, crisp salad, this restaurant is guaranteed to please.

As an added bonus, Heddon Street Kitchen is located near several family-friendly attractions, from the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum to the famous Hamleys Toy Shop.

Tredwells, Covent Garden

Another popular British celebrity chef, Marcus Wareing, along with renowned chef Chantelle Nicholson, are at the forefront of Tredwells. Located in Covent Garden, this is a restaurant with a heavy focus on using seasonal British ingredients, with a menu that is constantly evolving.

If your kids are young foodies, Tredwells is a restaurant that they will absolutely love.

While it does have a regular children’s menu, featuring much-loved classics from pasta to lamb croquettes, the restaurant also offers up a children’s tasting menu, known as the Tredwells Culinary Kids Menu. For a set fee of £17, your child will be treated to a six course gourmet tasting meal, with each course designed to be completely appetizing to children.

Wondering what the child’s tasting menu consists of?

As mentioned above, the dishes change depending on the time of year you visit, but the restaurant’s recent menu is as follows:

  • A mint and apple fizz cocktail
  • Roast carrots
  • Mozzarella with a mild, easy to eat chorizo
  • A Cumbrian bavette
  • A coconut mousse with marinated pineapple and passion fruit
  • Salted caramel ice cream topped with chocolate sauce

As you can see, this isn’t a menu that is going to appeal to all kids out there, but, for those who are aspiring to be foodies just like their parents, this menu will be very much appreciated.

Speaking of parents…

Just like your kids, you can also choose from a regular a la carte menu, or go for a tasting menu, of which they have one containing meat and one designed just for vegetarians. You can also opt for wine pairings to go with each course, elevating the flavors within each dish. If you happen to be in the area on a Sunday, treat your family to Tredwells’ Sunday Roast, with a fantastic choice of proteins to choose from.

Tamarind, Mayfair

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Tap the link in bio to explore our menus.

A post shared by Tamarind of Mayfair (@tamarindofmayfair) on Aug 4, 2019 at 10:00am PDT

In the mood for Indian food?

If so, Tamarind, which can be found in Mayfair, should definitely be on your list. Tamarind was one of the very first Indian restaurants in the world, and the first in London, to receive a Michelin star, and this award was well-deserved.

The food here is delicate and flavorful, but still wonderfully authentic, offering up new and exciting versions of classic Indian dishes.

Now, one thing to keep in mind before visiting…

Tamarind do not offer a children’s menu. However, they do have a good reason for this – the dishes that they create are designed to be shared by the table, meaning that children can simply sample from whatever their parents order. Of course, if you need the spice to be toned down for your kids, the chefs here are more than happy to cook you milder dishes.

The dishes range from curries to grilled dishes to small plates, but if you simply cannot choose from all of the items on the delectable menu, you may be best off going for the Tasting Menu instead. For a set fee of £69 (or £59 for vegetarians), guests will be served a selection of the restaurant’s most exquisite dishes.

Once you’re done eating, make the most of the restaurant’s luxurious location by taking a stroll around Mayfair. Don’t forget to also stop by at the OROGOLD Mayfair store, where you will be able to enjoy product demonstrations, VIP facials and expert skin care advice. And yes, children are most welcome at the store too!

Have you been to the OXO Tower before?

Even if you haven’t, you have likely seen the building, as this is one that is instantly recognizable in London’s skyline. As you can tell from the name, the OXO Tower Restaurant, Bar and Brasserie is located in the OXO Tower, on the eighth floor to be precise. From here, you and your family can enjoy panoramic views across the city, especially if you head out onto the restaurant’s expansive garden terrace.

For the views alone, this is a restaurant that most children usually really enjoy, and the dedicated children’s menu ensures that the food goes down a treat too. The menu features a wide range of child-friendly classic dishes, with the menu differing slightly between the restaurant and the brasserie. Children are also gifted with activity packs on arrival, ensuring that they have plenty to keep them busy while their parents are enjoying their meals.

Wondering what there is for the adults to eat?

All of the dishes here feature seasonal British produce, earning them the reputation for producing some of the best British fine dining dishes in the city. From slow-cooked pork belly to poached lobster to dry-aged beef fillet, just about everyone will find something that they enjoy on this menu. There are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options too, so don’t worry if you are on a meat-free diet.

If you are seeking an iconic London dining experience, afternoon tea is something that you should definitely try. Don’t worry, you won’t have to leave your kids at home, since the OXO Tower Restaurant serves up a special Kid’s Afternoon Tea, designed for children under the age of 12. Dishes include:

  • A banana milkshake shot
  • Finger sandwiches
  • Caramel and sea salt popcorn
  • Fudge brownies
  • Mini scones

Located at the Lanesborough Hotel, Céleste is another Michelin starred restaurant, as well as one that boasts three AA Rosettes.

The head chef of this restaurant, Eric Frechon, has earned himself three Michelin stars in his career, cooking up some of the finest dishes in all of France. Well, Frechon has now brought his skills to London, showcasing modern European cuisine to the city.

In addition to offering up a standard a la carte menu, Céleste also has a seasonal daily menu, featuring the freshest of British produce. From beetroot gazpacho to roasted stone bass to a confit duck leg, these dishes both look and taste absolutely spectacular. To elevate your dining experience even more, opt for the wine pairings, where you will be able to enjoy a different glass of wine with each course.

You are probably thinking…

This doesn’t sound very child-friendly!

Well, just like the ever-changing daily menu for adults, Céleste creates a bespoke children’s menu that changes each day. The children’s dishes are always fresh and flavorful, and while they may sometimes feature a few unusual ingredients, they are all cooked up in a way that children really appreciate.

What makes this restaurant even better is its location…

Knightsbridge is home to a wide range of children’s attractions, from Madame Tussauds to the London Zoo, making it easy to plan an entire day out here.

If you are familiar with New York’s fine dining restaurants, then Balthazar is a name that you have probably heard of before. This restaurant is a New York institution, often with a wait list of up to three months. Well, you won’t need to worry about that at Balthazar London, with this venue usually able to accommodate walk-in diners.

At first glance, you may not think that this is a very child-friendly restaurant, but the liveliness and large size of the brasserie makes it perfect for those more energetic kids.

Of course, in order to properly cater to those little ones, Balthazar London has a dedicated children’s menu that features firm favorites, such as:

  • Macaroni cheese, topped with smoked bacon
  • Spaghetti with a fresh tomato sauce
  • Chicken nuggets served with French fries

For dessert, children can pick from a variety of ice cream and sorbet flavors, with some exciting toppings to add on as well.

What about the adults?

Dishes are French bistro style, with specials that change every day. Another aspect to this restaurant that adults tend to love is the American Whiskey Bar, where you will find whiskey from more than 15 American states, along with incredible classic cocktails.

Want to make a day of it?

Combine your visit to Balthazar London with a trip to the London Transport Museum, which is literally just around the corner from the museum. There are several child-friendly exhibits here, giving kids and adults alike the chance to learn more about London’s transportation systems.

Meal @fredericks_n1 with work colleagues in Islington. I had Quinoa, broccoli and butternut squash 'superfood' salad and a chef's vegetable assiette. A family-run restaurant that has been serving up modern European dishes since the late 1960’s, Frederick’s is a much-loved London institution. The interior of the restaurant is bright, light and airy, and children are always made to feel extremely welcome.

While the chefs here are always happy to create child-sized version of the adult dishes on the a la carte menu, there is also a dedicated children’s menu available. Kids are able to choose from a three-course meal, with the dishes being classics that children always love. Plus, the babyccino that is included with the children’s meal always helps the young ones to feel more grown up.

For the adults, there are numerous dishes to choose from, with the restaurant famous for its broad menu. Whether you are in the mood for pan-fried scallops, roasted Welsh lamb or breaded goat’s cheese, each of the dishes served up here features fresh and seasonal ingredients, making the most of British produce.

For those of you who love looking at beautiful art…

Frederick’s has a collection well worth checking out. They began with a small selection of Peter Kalkhof paintings, which they first put on display to celebrate the restaurant’s 30th birthday. As you can imagine, their art collection has grown since then, with the Jill Furmanovsky photography pieces being especially popular.

Many people assume that fine dining with kids is next-to-impossible, but this isn’t the case at all…so long as you know where to go! No matter where in London you may be, those who are seeking a family-friendly fine dining restaurant will likely be able to find several to choose from, with the dishes that you will sample being just as beautiful as the restaurants themselves.

8) Koh Samui

The second largest of Thailand’s islands, Koh Samui is beautifully tropical, meaning that it enjoys warm temperatures throughout the year. 10 Reasons to Visit Taipei

Street scene in Taipei

beeboys / Shutterstock.com

When it comes to Asian travel destinations, cities such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai tend to be at the top of peoples’ bucket lists. However, if you want to try something a little different for your next vacation, Taipei is where to go. The capital of Taiwan, this thriving metropolis is buzzing with history, culture, a lively food scene and plenty of entertainment, promising a rewarding and fun-filled getaway.

1) The Architecture

Taipei boasts some incredible architecture, with its most famous being the Taipei 101 building. For four years, this skyscraper was the tallest building in the world, and even held claim to having the fastest elevator in the world. With its extraordinary size, this is definitely the focal point of Taipei’s cityscape, with few other buildings soaring to such great heights, especially due to the high earthquake risk that Taipei constantly faces.

Another dominant piece of architecture would be the Grand Hotel – a five star establishment that was completed in 1973.

Also worth visiting is the Tao Zhu Yin Yuan Tower, which is a relatively new addition to the city. An easy walk from the Taipei 101 building, this twisted design is extremely eco-friendly, and hopes to soon be the greenest building in all of Taiwan.

2) The Culture

Longshan Temple, Taipei

amadeustx / Shutterstock.com

Although Taipei is highly urbanized, there are still so many pockets of culture to be found around the city, most noticeably at the city’s many temples. Taiwan itself is home to more than 15,000 registered temples, and a large chunk of these can be found in Taipei.

Of course, you won’t have time to visit them all, so here are a few temples that you definitely should not miss out on:

  • Longshan Temple – one of the most iconic temples in the city, the local community renovates and maintains this historic building, retaining its traditional Chinese charm
  • Xingtian Temple – perhaps the busiest temple in the city, this temple recently became famous for removing all incense burners as a way to cut back on air pollution
  • Xiahai Chenghuang Temple – said to be home to the God of love, this is the temple to visit if you are looking for some help in the romance department
  • Bangka Qingshui Temple – dating all the way back to 1787, this temple holds a very special place in the heart of the Chinese immigrants who first came to Taiwan many years ago

Don’t forget, since all of Taipei’s temples are active places of worship, make sure that you dress modestly and act respectfully at each one you visit.

3) The Nature

When planning a city break, spending time in nature isn’t something that people usually expect to be able to do, but Taipei truly does boast some exquisite natural beauty. Even better, these secluded pockets of greenery are not too far away from the city center, making it easy to incorporate them into your itinerary.

The Yangmingshan National Park is always a popular spot with nature-seeking tourists. If you head to the top of the Datun Mountain, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the city below. There are several small roads and trails throughout the park, as well as local cafes hidden within the forests, making this such an exciting area to explore.

If you head on over to the south-east part of the city, you will come across a suburb called Maokong. This area is famous for its tea plantations, complete with traditional teahouses tucked away in various corners of the hillsides. While you’re here, take a ride on the Maokong Gondola to enjoy some fantastic views of your surroundings.

4) The Food

Many people visit Taipei solely for its food scene, and it’s easy to see why. From fine dining restaurants to street-side stalls, there is delicious food to be found pretty much everywhere you visit in the city.

Not sure where to begin?

There are several food tours that you can sign up for if you would like an expert guide to take you to the best spots. Alternatively, you can meander through the city sampling local dishes at your whim. If you decide to do this, make sure that you do not miss out on these dishes:

    • Beef noodle soup
    • Daikon and scallion pancakes
    • Taiwanese hot pot
    • Braised pork rice
    • Taiwanese fried chicken
    • Pineapple cake

5) The Shopping

Taipei 101 shopping mall

Just like the city’s food scene, the shopping in Taipei ranges from glitzy high end boutiques to bustling street markets, giving you the very best of both worlds.

When it comes to markets, the Shilin Night Market tends to be the most popular. This is the largest market in Taipei, selling everything from food to jewelry to electronics, all at fantastic prices. If you would prefer to do your shopping during the day, check out the Jade Market, as well as the Underground Shopping Bazaar at the Longshan Temple (the perfect excuse to combine culture with some retail therapy).

If you’re seeking out stores that are a little more upscale, the Taipei 101 building is home to several big-name international brands, from Dior to Louis Vuitton. The Da’an District is also great for luxury shopping, especially since this is where you will find our OROGOLD Taipei store. Feel free to stop by for a complimentary facial, product demonstrations and an insight into some of our exclusive products.

6) The Museums

Love museums?

If so, you will love Taipei. There are several museums to visit throughout the city, but, if you only have time for a couple, make sure that you pick from the following:

  • National Palace Museum – this museum has won numerous awards, and is home to one of the largest collections of Chinse Imperial artefacts in the world, with 700,000 on display
  • Taipei Fine Arts Museum – boasting some of the most impressive fine art pieces in the country, this museum offers up both permanent and temporary exhibitions
  • National Taiwan Museum – the best place to learn more about the country’s history, culture and traditions
  • Museum of Contemporary Art – a smaller museum, this one features some truly unique modern art
  • Evergreen Maritime Museum – learn more about Taiwan’s naval forces, and have a go at commandeering a ship for yourself in the simulator room

7) The Hot Springs

Did you know that Taiwan is home to numerous hot springs?

A few of these can be found in and around Taipei, with the most popular being located in Beitou. Just a half hour MRT ride away from central Taipei, Beitou is where you will find the Datun volcanic range, resulting in several thermal valleys popping up around the area.

Begin your visit to Beitou with a stop at the Beitou Hot Springs Museum, which is free to enter. Featuring a mix of British and Japanese influences, this was the very first public hot spring bath in the area, making it well worth seeing.

After learning about the history of Beitou’s hot springs, you will probably be more than ready to have a soak in one for yourself.

Well, the main public hot springs in the area is known as the Millennium Hot Springs, and there are four different pools for you to choose from. Each one varies in temperature, beginning with the coolest pool at the bottom and the hottest at the top.

While you’re in the area, check out the Thermal Valley too, otherwise known as Hell Valley. This vividly green pool of water retains a constant temperature of around 100 degrees. Although it is way too hot to swim in here, being able to feel the immense steam rising from the surface of the water is still such an amazing experience.

8) The Festivals

Sky lantern festival in Taipei

Visiting a local festival is always a good way to immerse yourself in the heart and soul of a new destination.

Fortunately, Taipei hosts a number of festivals through the year, many of which are completely unique to the country. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting at certain times of the year, here are some of the festivals you may be able to catch:

  • Lantern Festival – held at the start of the Lunar New Year, which is usually somewhere around February, this festival sees thousands of different lanterns released into the sky, each one featuring a handwritten message
  • Jinshan Fire Fishing Festival – created to promote the tradition of fire fishing, this festival allows visitors to go out on the water with local fisherman, participating in some fire fishing
  • Fulong Sand Sculpting Festival – take in some incredible sand sculptures at one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire country
  • Dragon Boat Festival – featuring the largest dragon boat competition in all of Asia, this festival is packed with plenty of fun activities for the public to participate in
  • Taipei Water Festival – a way to promote aquatic activities and a healthy lifestyle, this festival consists of everything from swimming pool fun to seaside excursions

9) The Nightlife

While Taipei is full of energy during the day, the city comes even more alive at night. In amongst the many night markets dotted around the city, you will also find some vibrant nightlife spots.

Wondering where to go?

Whether you’re seeking a pulsating nightclub, a sleek bar, or a relaxing lounge, here are some of the best nightlife spots in Taipei:

  • Number 45 – once a traditional Chinese medicine store, this bar serves up everything from complex cocktails to draft beers
  • 1001 Nights Taipei – a friendly venue with a restaurant, a bar and even a shisha bar, all accompanied by salsa, kizomba and hip hop music
  • Ximen Red House Area – unofficially known as the gay district of Taipei, you will find numerous LGBT-oriented bars, cafes and restaurants here
  • Landmark Taproom – an outdoor craft beer bar, which many locals would consider to be a hidden gem
  • KOR Taipei – one of the largest cocktail bars in the city, offering up an impressive selection of drinks
  • FRANK Taipei – a relaxing rooftop lounge with stunning views of the city’s skyline

10) The Day Trips

There is certainly plenty to do in Taipei, even if you have already visited the city before.

However, if you would like to venture a little further afield, Taipei actually makes a great location from which to embark on a few day trips.

Need some inspiration on where to go?

Check out these areas:

  • Jiufen – an old Japanese mining town, Jiufen is a great place to learn more about the Japanese colonization of the country
  • Yehliu Geopark – just north of Taipei, this area is full of natural beauty, along with some rare rock formations that have not been found anywhere else in the world
  • Tamsui – this small coastal town is home to some incredible seafood, along with an ancient harbor and some of the best sunsets in the country
  • Wulai – a mountainous region that will teach you more about the indigenous culture of Taiwan
  • Yilan – if you love hiking and outdoor adventure, Yilan is the place to go. You will also find hot springs, markets, and even a large waterfall here
  • Sun Moon Lake – the largest lake in Taiwan, Sun Moon Lake is a little further away from Taipei than the other day trips on this list, but the scenery here is more than worth the journey

With so much to see and do in and around the city, it is no surprise that Taipei is slowly earning itself the reputation of being a thriving tourist hotspot. Whether you enjoy learning about heritage and culture, or would prefer to spend your vacation eating, drinking and shopping, Taipei offers up all of this plus so much more.

People enjoying a Thanksgiving meal

Want to do something a little different this Thanksgiving?

Here are six destinations that each promise a memorable and stress-free holiday weekend.

Lake George, New York

Lake George fall foliage

If you live in the north-east of the USA, chances are that it will not take you more than a day to drive to the Adirondacks. Once you get there, make your way over to Lake George. Running for 32 miles at the base of the Adirondacks, this glacier-formed lake is not only a hotspot during the summer months, but has plenty to offer as a Thanksgiving destination too.

Things to Do

With everything from forests to beaches, along with a healthy sprinkling of breweries and wineries, Lake George is the perfect vacation spot for many. Here are just a few of the activities you can enjoy in the area:

  • A three mile walk up Prospect Mountain, from where you will be able to enjoy stunning views of Lake George and the rest of the Adirondacks
  • A visit to the Fort William Henry Museum & Restoration, to learn more about the area’s past
  • Spend some time exploring Million Dollar Beach, which earned that name due to how much money was spent creating it
  • Get your adrenaline pumping by taking a ride on the Eagle Flyer Zipline, which will have you racing through the air at 50 miles per hour

Where to Stay

If you want to ensure that you and your loved ones do not miss out on any Thanksgiving festivities, then the Sagamore Resort is where you need to book yourselves into.

Why?

Because this 133 year old resort is offering up a variety of fun-filled Thanksgiving activities, including:

  • A family movie night, along with a campfire, on Thanksgiving Eve
  • A Thanksgiving buffet
  • A gingerbread house-building session
  • Screens showing both the football as well as the Macy’s Parade

From an 18-hole golf course (designed by Donald Ross) to tennis courts and a spa, there is plenty to keep you busy at this resort on Thanksgiving weekend.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Although the pilgrims may have initially tried to land the Mayflower in Virginia, Cape Cod was actually the very first landing site, and there is now a 255 foot monument in place as proof. A year later, the very first Thanksgiving was aso celebrated in Cape Cod, making this the perfect place for you to spend Thanksgiving weekend this year.

Where to Stay

There are numerous accommodation options on Oahu, ranging from budget to ultra-luxury. Of course, with it being Thanksgiving, this is the perfect time to treat yourself to some decadence, which is why the Hilton Hawaiian Village should be your first choice.

Aspen, Colorado

Things to Do

Aspen is a stunning town to visit, with picturesque views to be seen no matter where you go. While you could easily spend the majority of your time exploring the area to find the best views, there are plenty of other activities you can take part in too, such as:

  • Hike over to the Maroon Bells, which are twin peaks that rise to over 14,000 feet
  • Drive along Independence Pass, one of the highest scenic roads in North America

Where to Stay

There are some truly beautiful hotels and resorts to choose from in Aspen, but the St. Regis Aspen Resort is always one of the most popular. In addition to the Thanksgiving buffet that they serve up, this resort also offers the unique opportunity to indulge in some Thanksgiving-themed wine tastings, as well as a ceremonial ceremony at sundown on Thanksgiving eve, complete with nightcaps and roasted s’mores.

Washington D.C.

Landmarks in Washington DC

If you would prefer a city-based Thanksgiving getaway, Washington D.C. will not disappoint. Being the capital of the United States, this powerful city is home to several important national landmarks, along with plenty of Thanksgiving events too.

Things to Do

Whether you want to learn more about the country’s past, or simply want to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the big city, there is so much to do in Washington D.C. over Thanksgiving weekend:

  • Visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon, which was the first President’s home and library. Since he was the one to create the official Thanksgiving holiday, this activity is a must-do
  • Check out the holiday parade, which is followed by the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony
  • Explore the festive gardens at the United States Botanic Garden, complete with live music on Tuesday and Thursday evenings

  • Take your children to see the Holiday in the Park event at Six Flags America
  • Pay a visit to ICE!, which is a winter wonderland that has been created from more than two million pounds-worth of hand-sculpted ice – definitely an impressive sight

Where to Stay

The Four Seasons Hotel Washington D.C. is always a popular choice over Thanksgiving weekend, meaning that you will need to book yourself a room as soon as possible.

Why is this hotel especially popular for the holidays?

Due to the many Thanksgiving celebrations that they host, including:

  • An annual Mayflower event that is celebrated with firefighters, police, EMTs and other public servants. The event is held on a 53-foot Mayflower Truck, with both staff and guests dressing up to serve meals
  • A Thanksgiving Brunch, complete with over 30 Thanksgiving sweet treats
  • A three course Thanksgiving meal at the hotel’s Bourbon Steak restaurant, featuring heritage turkey, lobster pot pie, and many other mouthwatering delicacies

While spending Thanksgiving at home can be fun, there is no denying the huge amount of stress that often accompanies this. If you want to avoid all of that for this year, and focus on ensuring that you have a peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable Thanksgiving weekend instead, these holiday getaways are definitely worth considering. Be sure to book soon, as there isn’t that much time left!

Al Andalus

A melting pot of various cultural influences and the most stunning scenery, the Andalusia region of southern Spain is one that everybody should see. This is also where you will find Al Andalus-a train that showcases the very best of what Andalusia has to offer.

The Train

Just like a few of the other luxury trains on this list, Al Andalus features vintage carriages, this time made in France in 1930. The carriages have all been beautifully restored, with interiors done up to full splendor.

The sleeper carriages are all air-conditioned, with private train stewards to ensure that all of your needs are being met. During the day, the staff will transform your sleeping quarters into a living area, before turning this back into a bedroom each evening. There are four restaurant and lounge cars, each one boasting live music recitals that manage to accentuate the stunning landscapes around you even further.

Keep in mind, although you will receive a full breakfast on the train each morning, most of your other meals will be had at local restaurants.

Why?

Because this gives you the opportunity to sample regional Spanish cuisine from the many different destinations you visit.

The Journey

There are a couple of different itineraries that you can choose from with Al Andalus, but the most popular tends to be the Andalusia Itinerary. This journey takes six nights and seven days, stopping off at the following places:

  • Seville – your first stop is the perfect place to learn more about Spain’s history and culture
  • Jerez – enjoy an equestrian ballet, along with a trip to the Donana National Park
  • Cadiz – one of the oldest cities in Europe, with some of the most unbelievable natural beauty
  • Granada – visit the famous Alhambra, tour the city’s cathedral and enjoy an authentic flamenco performance
  • Linares-Baeza – stare in wonder at the 70 million olive trees that line the countryside here, stopping off at the Olive Oil Museum for a bit of insider info into one of Spain’s biggest industries
  • Cordoba – learn more about this historic city, which was once the most populated in the world

If you want to see what eastern and central Europe has to offer, the Golden Eagle Danube Express will show you. Unlike the majority of the other trains on this list, which are decked out in vintage fittings, the Golden Eagle Danube Express is all about keeping things modern.

The Train

Although the Golden Eagle Danube Express has been done up in a more contemporary style, they still have not compromised on luxury. The train only takes 50 passengers at a time, ensuring that the needs of each and every passenger are completely met.

There are different types of suites and cabins to choose from, each one providing the ultimate in comfort. These sleeping areas are converted into living areas in the morning, before train stewards turn them back into bedrooms in the evening. The fact that all suites and cabins have WiFi is something else that sets this train apart, as this feature is one that many others on this list are lacking.

When it comes to food, the focus in the Restaurant Car is on regional specialties. Dishes are cooked on the train itself by skilled chefs, with ingredients being collected at each of the train’s stops. Once you’re done with your meal, head over to the Lounge Car, with elegant wood-panelled walls and soft sofas, and, of course, a piano, complete with pianist. This is the social hub of the train, perfect for making friends with the other passengers.

Although a little lesser-known than some of the other trains on this list, the Majestic Train de Luxe can definitely hold its own when compared to its competitors. This re-created Imperial train will take you back in time, while also taking you from Austria to Croatia.

The Train

Designed after the Imperial Express, an imperial train that belonged to Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the Majestic Train de Luxe manages to perfectly exude an authentic royal ambience. From paintings of the monarchy to the rich colors used in the interior, the atmosphere on this train is one of elegance and mystery.

There are several different cabins on this train in which you can spend your time, including:

One of the downsides (and there aren’t very many!) to a luxury train journey is the fact that you are often not able to spend quite as much time as you would have liked in a certain location. This is where the Majestic Train de Luxe stands out…

The main itinerary that this train follows is from Vienna, Austria, to Opatija, Croatia. This is a historical route that takes you along the Semmering Mountains, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This journey is an amazing one because the landscape is so varied, you will see everything from traditional mansions to ancient viaducts.

Once you reach Opatija, you and your luggage are then transferred over to Hotel Miramar, where you will spend the next four nights. This gives you plenty of time to explore Croatia.

These luxury trains are such a unique way to explore the different regions of Europe. Whether you want to delve deep into the Scottish Highlands or soak up some Eastern European culture, these journeys offer an indulgent way to do all of that and more.

Eat Your Way Around Hanoi: 8 Must-Try Dishes

Vietnamese street food cooking on flame

Planning a trip to Hanoi?

If so, you’re in luck, because this vibrant city is famous for being the culinary capital of Vietnam. Whether you’re in Hanoi for a weekend, a week, or longer, here are the X dishes that you need to try before you leave.

Hanoian Pho

Bowl of pho with chopsticks

You have probably already heard of pho, and have likely tried it too. However, did you know that pho was reputedly invented in Hanoi?

This is why the bowls of pho from the north of Vietnam taste quite different to those served up in the south.

Wondering what the differences are?

Pho from the north is all about simplicity, delicacy and purity. It is always made from an unsweetened stock, with the vegetables added into the dish beforehand. In contrast, pho from the south comes with vegetables on the side, along with a variety of bold spices and garnishes that often compete with each other.

What exactly is in a bowl of pho?

Three main elements:

  • Broth

  • Rice noodles (with the word “pho” actually referring to a type of noodle)

  • Meat (usually chicken or beef)

A plate of herbs is usually served up too, so that you can add some extra flavor into your bowl.

Where can you find the best pho in Hanoi?

Here’s where to go:

  • Pho Thin

  • Pho Gia Truyen

  • Pho Suong

Bun Cha

Bowl of Bun Cha

Bun cha is another dish that is said to have originated in Hanoi. In fact, it made headlines recently after President Obama fell in love with it during a visit to Vietnam.

What is bun cha?

It consists of a few different elements:

  • Grilled or roasted pork, served in a bowl of sweet but tangy broth

  • Vietnamese bun (this isn’t a bread, but a type of noodle)

  • A plate of fresh greens

Wondering how you would eat it?

In Hanoi, the traditional way to eat bun cha would be to mix everything together in your bowl and then eat it in the same way you would pho.

However, be sure to try the southern way of eating bun cha too…

Take a large lettuce leaf and then wrap this around the noodles, pork and herbs. Then, dip into the broth before taking a big and satisfying bite. This method is great for when you are on-the-go, which is why bun cha has evolved to become such a popular street food.

Where can you find the best bun cha in Hanoi?

Here are a few places to try:

  • Bun Cha Huong Lien (which is now known as Bun Cha Obama)

  • Bun Cha Binh Chung

  • Bun Cha Dac Kim

Are you a seafood fan?

Although, even if you aren’t, cha ca is a dish that you will still likely love. This grilled fish dish was invented in Hanoi, and first became popular over a hundred years ago when it was served to the troops during the French colonial rule.

The dish was created by the family who ran the Cha Ca La Vong Restaurant, with the dish becoming so famous that they named their restaurant after it.

What exactly is cha ca?

It consists of slices of fish that have been marinated and then grilled to perfection. This is then fried up table-side, which provides such an exciting dining experience. The chef will usually place a hot pot onto your table, into which the fish, along with herbs and spices, is placed. You will also be presented with a number of accompaniments for the dish, including:

  • Rice noodles

  • Fresh herbs

  • A dipping fish sauce

  • Sliced chilies

  • Roasted peanuts

As you can imagine, this all results in a magnificent combination of tantalizing flavors, making it no surprise that cha ca quickly becomes a culinary favorite among first-time visitors to Hanoi.

Where can you find the best cha ca in Hanoi?

Well, while many tourists still flock to the Cha Ca La Vong restaurant, where the dish was first invented, the restaurant has gone downhill over the years.

If you really want to taste the best cha ca in the city, the place to go is the Cha Ca Thang Long restaurant.

Banh Mi

Banh Mi sandwich

Although banh mi has French origins, it has now become a distinct Vietnamese dish. This is a dish that is famous all over the country, and the rest of the world, but some of the best sandwiches can definitely be found in Hanoi.

What is banh mi?

It consists of a light and fluffy baguette. Unlike French baguettes, the Vietnamese version is made with a mixture of rice and wheat flour, giving it a very crispy and thin crust.

Wondering what goes into the baguette?

A variety of different fillings, such as:

  • Pork

  • Pate

  • Cured ham

  • Local vegetables, including carrot, radish and cucumber

  • Coriander and other local herbs

If you would prefer something a little heartier, you could opt for the local dish Banh Mi Thit Xien Nuong instead. This includes the addition of grilled pork skewers. The marinade for the pork is usually made from caramel, fish and sugar, which gives the finished dish a beautiful sweetness.

Where can you find the best banh mi in Hanoi?

Here are a few local spots to head to:

  • Banh Mi Ngon

  • Banh My Pate Lan Ong (where the duck pate is made fresh each morning)

  • Quan Ba Nga (if you want to try banh mi thit xien nuong)

Wondering what Hanoians eat for breakfast?

One popular dish is xoi xeo, which is a popular street food usually served up wrapped in a banana leaf. Of course, the restaurant version is presented differently, in a bowl filled with xoi xeo and all of its many accompaniments.

What exactly is xoi xeo?

It is a sticky rice dish. This may sound simple, but the way in which it is prepared is very special…

The glutinous rice is steamed, and chicken fat is mixed through it at the same time. This is then combined with steamed mung beans that have been peeled and ground.

The dish is always topped with fried crispy shallots. The other toppings depend on where you purchase the dish from, but common additions include:

  • Pork floss

  • Chinese or Vietnamese sausage

  • Roast pork or chicken

  • Egg

A traditional cucumber salad side dish is always served up with xoi xeo too.

Where can you find the best xoi xeo in Hanoi?

These are the places you need to go:

  • Xoi Yen (reputed to have the best xoi xeo in the city)

  • Xoi May

  • Xoi 622-Duy Tan

Ca Phe Trung

A glass of egg coffee on a table

If you love a good coffee, then ca phe trung is not to be missed. Many would call it the Vietnamese version of the cappuccino, and there are certainly some similarities when it comes to texture and flavor.

Ca phe trung was actually invented way back in 1925, when a local barista could not source enough fresh milk for a cappuccino. So, he made a ca phe trung instead…

Wondering what is in a ca phe trung?

Well, you’ve got the hot coffee, of course. But the cappuccino-esque part comes from:

  • Whipped egg yolks

  • Cheese

  • Butter

The three ingredients are mixed with the coffee, creating a frothy, foamy, creamy beverage that tastes surprisingly like a cappuccino.

There are two main versions of this drink; hot and cold. The hot is served in a small dish of hot water to help the coffee retain its heat, while the cold version is usually served up in a small glass, along with a spoon. In a way, it is more like an ice cream than a beverage.

Do you prefer your coffee less frothy?

If so, give the coconut coffee a try instead.

It has the same level of sweetness as ca phe trung, but without the froth, and is made with coconut instead of egg.

Where can you find the best ca phe trung in Hanoi?

  • Cafe Giang (where the drink is said to have been invented)

  • Cafe Phuong Linh

  • Nhan

Bun Thang

Bún Thang – one of the best noodle soup dishes from Hanoi. "Thang" means "ladder" and also "precription". Back in the day medication was prescribed in a bag/dose of mixed herbs or "một thang thuốc". It's said that this dish was named after that because after the new year, people would repurpose their new year meals, taking the left over proteins comprising of ham, chicken, egg, shrimp and mushrooms and created a noodle soup dish filled with a "mix of things". Although the other definition, "ladder" some say… the way the proteins are cut resemble a ladder, hence the name Bún Thang. While we don't know where the true origin of the name comes from, we do know it's light and delicious and that we're serving it tonight from 4pm-9pm @boysdontcrynyc. Get you your prescription ladder soup. 💁🏻‍♀️🍜 . . . . . . . . . . . . #bunthang #hanoi #vietnamese #chicken #noodlesoup #vietnameseeats #vietnamesecuisine #vietnamesefood #vietfood #comfortfood #hanoieats #nyceats #eaterny #infatuationnyc #eatingnyc #les #SaigonSocialNYC

While pho is the most famous of Vietnamese noodle dishes, make sure that you do not leave Hanoi without trying bun thang.

What exactly is bun thang?

It is a chicken noodle soup that usually contains around 20 ingredients. It may sound simple at first, but this dish is actually incredibly complex yet delicate, with each element being showcased beautifully.

Here are just a few of the ingredients that are used in a traditional bun thang:

  • Chicken broth, sometimes with pork too

  • Shredded chicken, with the birds used for this dish being of a very specific age

  • Rice vermicelli noodles

  • Dried shrimp

  • Vietnamese sausage

  • Mushrooms

  • Sliced egg

  • Green onions and chillies

If you are lucky enough to sample a truly authentic bun thang, then there is one more ingredient that you should be aware of…

It is known as ca cuong, and is a pheromone that comes from the male belostomatid beetle.

This is added into the dish at extremely minute quantities. In fact, restaurants that use this special ingredient will dip the tip of a toothpick into it, adding just that tiny amount into the dish.

What does the beetle extract do for the dish?

It adds a very exotic fragrance, but does not have any effect at all of the actual taste of the dish.

Where can you find the best bun thang in Hanoi?

It isn’t actually easy to find an authentic bun thang in Hanoi, but there are a few key restaurants around the city that are known for this dish:

  • Bun Thang Ba Duc

  • Thuan Ly Bun Thang

  • Bun Thang Ngoc Tuyen

Banh Cuon

Chopsticks holding banh cuon

Banh cuon is another dish that is extremely popular in the mornings, but you will find it being served as a snack throughout the day.

What exactly is banh cuon?

It is a steamed rice noodle roll. It looks a little like a white crepe, except that it is a savory dish, rather than a sweet one.

Wondering what the roll is filled with?

Usually a combination of ground mushrooms and pork. The rolls are then served up on a plate, topped with fresh cilantro and crispy fried shallots.

This may not sound very exciting, but the magic comes with the dish’s dipping sauce…

The sauce has a fish sauce base, but also contains a small drop of ca cuong (the beetle extract that was mentioned earlier).

When these unique flavors are combined with the soft and slippery texture of the rolls, the result is absolutely divine.

Where can you find the best banh cuon in Hanoi?

Just about every local restaurant and street food stall serves this dish up.

However, if you want to taste a more upmarket, but equally authentic, version of this dish, head to Banh Cuon Gia An. Unlike many of the other restaurants in the city, this is one that does not use any preservatives when creating their dishes.

Once you are done with your meal, take a stroll over to the nearby Vincom Center, where you will find the OROGOLD Hanoi Store. This is the perfect place for some rest and relaxation, where you can enjoy everything from VIP facials to product demonstrations to customized skincare advice.

The food scene in Hanoi is one of the best in the world. The dishes are wonderfully authentic, while being full of flavor, spice and freshness. While the dishes and restaurants mentioned above are definitely worth trying, there is amazing food to be found all over the city, so be sure to sample as much as you can!

10 Secret Spots to Visit in Hong Kong

Peng Chau Beach

While Disneyland, Stanley Market and Hong Kong’s other go-to attractions may definitely be plenty of fun, there is so much more to this subtropical archipelago that most tourists don’t get to see. To take a peek into Hong Kong’s wilder, deeper and darker side, here are 10 secret spots you need to visit.

1) Peng Chau Island

Beach and boats on Peng Chau Island

Hong Kong is usually associated with its high-rise skyline, with many people not realizing that Hong Kong is home to an abundance of natural beauty too.

To see this, you will need to travel a little further afield…

Peng Chau Island is located just 8km to the west of Hong Kong Island, with regular ferries available to take you between the two.

What should you do once you get there?

The best way to explore the island is by taking its walking trail, which offers up a tour of the following highlights:

    • The busy fishing activity in the surrounding waters
    • Old Fisherman’s Rock with its views of Hong Kong Disneyland as well as Kowloon (visit during the evening to catch the park’s fireworks display from a unique perspective)
    • The most exquisite sandy beaches, which are perfect for a picnic
    • The island’s unique ecosystem, especially if you branch off onto the Peng Yu Path
    • Finger Hill, which is the highest point on the island. While you may think that it offers 360 degree views, the overgrown vegetation here can sometimes get in the way of that

Although Peng Chau Island is small, there is plenty to see. There are also several shops, cafes and restaurants, so you could easily spend the entire day exploring the island.

2) The Un Chau Estate Flower Tunnel

If you’re looking for a vacation photo like no other…

Head to the Un Chau Public Housing Estate.

Why?

Because here you will find the seemingly-magical flower tunnel. The tunnel is only in flower in the spring months, so, if you are visiting Hong Kong in March or April, this is a sight you should definitely see.

The tunnel is covered in bougainvillea, a plant with fairytale-like flowers that make it seem as though you are a million miles away from the city.

While the majority of tourists don’t know about this spot, it is a place that is pretty popular with local photographers. If you want the tunnel to yourself, try to time your visit for early in the morning.

3) The Kowloon Walled City Park

Chinese zodiac signs at the Kowloon Walled City Park

Built in the early 1990s by the British, the Kowloon Walled City Park has a disturbing past…

Nicknamed the City of Darkness, it is infamous for being a claustrophobic residential disaster, with more than 40,000 Chinese living in cramped shanty quarters, with each tower around 15 floors high. The dark passageways that wound themselves between these towers never received any sunlight, hence the city’s nickname. As you can imagine, this was a city where crime, drugs, brothels and more were running rife, which is why the British eventually tore it down.

The park that sits at the site now is what remains of the City of Darkness, and a few parts of the city have been rebuilt for educational purposes. There is also a small exhibit to check out, along with a Jiangnan-style garden that showcases some beautiful natural beauty.

4) PMQ

PMQ is a historic area of central Hong Kong that has been the focus of one of the city’s biggest conservation projects in recent years.

Wondering what PMQ stands for?

It stands for Police Married Quarters, as it used to be a dormitory for Chinese officers when Hong Kong’s population was rapidly on the rise.

Today, this site, including its grade III listed building, has been completely transformed into a mixed-use creative venue, with an emphasis on arts and design.

Here are just a few of the establishments that you will find here:

  • Taste Kitchen – transformed into a new restaurant each month, featuring a different up-and-coming chef
  • Sake Central – offers up an educational sake tasting experience
  • Taste Library – home to more than 3000 food-related books from all over the world
  • Fashion stores – from the exclusive couture pieces from Chailie Ho to the minimal, unisex silhouettes of Modement, there are so many cutting edge fashion brands to be found at PMQ
  • Home design – try Found Muji for that authentic Japanese aesthetic, or Bamboa Home for pieces that have been crafted from locally-sourced bamboo

5) Sai Wan

A beach at Sai Wan

Did you know that Hong Kong is home to a stunning waterfall that is around 100 feet tall? There are also several others around it that are just as worth seeing.

It is a bit of a trek to get there, with the total round-trip journey, including hiking time, being about five hours. However, if you have some time to spare and want to check out some of Hong Kong’s natural offerings, this is a trip worth taking.

The first trail head is by the Sai Wan Pavilion. You can either take public transport or a taxi to get here.

Once you get started on your journey, here are just a few of the things that you will see:

  • Sai Wan Village with its quaint cafes and shops
  • Wide, white sandy beaches
  • Natural deep pools that are so refreshing on a hot day
  • The Thousand Silk Falls, which you will climb up
  • The 30ft Ming Yau Falls
  • The 100ft Chong Yau Falls
  • The 45ft Black Deer Pool Falls
  • The 60ft Well Bottom Pool Falls
  • The Ben Cho Falls

Not bad for a day’s hike! As you can probably guess, this is a pretty strenuous walk. Make sure that you are physically fit enough to handle it before setting off.

6) The Rainbow Organic Strawberry Farm

The amount of countryside in Hong Kong would surprise you, but there are now more and more small farms popping up around the city outskirts that are making the most of this.

While many of Hong Kong’s farms may be relatively new, the Rainbow Organic Strawberry Farm is actually one of Hong Kong’s oldest organic farms.

Where is it?

It’s in Fanling, which is about an hour’s drive from Hong Kong Island.

Once you get to the farm, you pay a small entry fee and are given a basket and a pair of scissors. You can then wander the grounds at your own leisure, picking their super-sweet organic strawberries to fill your basket.

Keep in mind that this is a seasonal activity. Strawberry-picking is only available in Hong Kong between mid-December to April. If you are visiting just outside of these months, it is still worth contacting some of the local farms to see if they have any early or late fruit growing.

Wondering if there are any other local farms you can visit?

Yes, there are actually quite a few:

  • The Living Farm in Tai Po, where you can try your hand at urban farming
  • Erickson Organic Farm in Yuen Long, where you will find numerous fruits and vegetables waiting to be picked
  • Kam Tin Country Club Hong Kong in Yuen Long – they specialize in strawberries from all over the world, from France to Korea, and charge by the pound
  • Grandpa’s Garden on Lantau Island, where you can buy seasonal fresh organic fruits, vegetables and herbs
  • Dragontail Farm on Mui Wo, which not only offers daily tours and activities for kids, but also delivers their fresh produce to homes all over Hong Kong

7) Shek Kwu Chau

Here’s a spot that’s so secret, it’s only open for one day a year, or to those who have a special permit.

Shek Kwu Chau is an outlying island just south of Lantau Island.

Although there aren’t many permanent residents on this pristine island, there is a voluntary substance abuse center here that helps to rehabilitate people. While this may be what the island is most famous for, there is a piece of architecture here definitely worth seeing…

The island is home to a Roman bath that took 15 years to build. Although it was originally built as a way for those seeking substance abuse treatment to relax, it is now being used as a reservoir, due to a lack of fresh water on the island.

In addition to the Roman bath, you will also find numerous sculptures and pieces of artwork here, along with traditional Chinese temples.

This might not be an easy place to visit, but it really is worth trying!

8) Tai O

Tai O fishing village

Have you ever heard of Tai O?

It’s a small, quaint fishing village that sits on the western edge of Lantau Island. This is a spot with such a rich history, having seen, over the years, everything from gun smuggling and illegal immigration to salt production and a growing fishing industry.

Of course, word about how interesting Tai O is has spread in recent years, meaning that this charming village is now attracting more and more tourists each year. However, most of those tourists head to Tai O to check out the traditional stilt houses and to sample some of the village’s fresh seafood.

What the majority of the tourists don’t realize is that Tai O has another very special feature to offer…

Tai O is the perfect spot from where you can catch a glimpse of the endangered Chinese white dolphin. In fact, it is the only spot from where these incredibly rare creatures can be seen.

You will need to take a boat excursion out into deeper waters, and a white dolphin sighting is never guaranteed, especially with their population declining in recent years. Still, that’s all the more reason to visit Tai O and catch these majestic beauties while you still can!

9) Foxglove

This wouldn’t be a complete list without a mention of a secret speakeasy, and that is exactly what Foxglove is.

In order to get to this restaurant, you need to enter an umbrella shop, and then make your way through a secret doorway at the back.

Wondering what you will find inside?

A very dramatic interior inspired by vintage cars and trains, as well as first class planes. There are four different rooms here, and even a hidden library.

Foxglove serves up a Cantonese-inspired lunch and dinner menu, and has an extensive cocktail list. Table service is taken to the next level here with vintage push carts visiting each table to create custom martinis for each diner.

Those of you who are jazz fans will appreciate the music here, with some popular live acts gracing the stage. Try to visit in the evening if you want to catch this place at its very best.

While you’re there, take a stroll around Central, which is especially enchanting during the evenings. The OROGOLD store here is open until late, giving you the chance to take some time out to pamper your skin.

10) The Cheung Po Tsai Cave

Cheung Po Tsai Cave

Often referred to as China’s version of Robin Hood, Cheung Po Tsai was a notorious pirate who was in charge of a 600-ship fleet.

The pirate had many stash houses around the islands, one of which is now known as the Cheung Po Tsai Cave on Cheung Chau Island.

The cave may be small but there are several winding passageways around it, making it plenty of fun to explore. If you have children, this is an activity that they will definitely enjoy.

Don’t forget to bring a torch!

While you may hear about the same Hong Kong attractions over and over again, there are so many more parts to Hong Kong that are worth visiting. From secret caves and secret restaurants to cascading waterfalls and natural swimming pools, this list will keep you pretty busy the next time you visit Hong Kong!
