View of houses in Harpers Ferry

While the cities of the USA may attract the most tourists, the small, riverside towns are where you will find the heart and soul of each state. Packed with history, heritage, culture, and truly unique quirks, these are America’s seven prettiest riverside towns.

Hanover, New Hampshire

Check out the first fall colors from the Baker Library Clock Tower!⁣ ⁣ With peak foliage just around the corner, we’ll be sure to take plenty of photos and keep you updated as the colors begin to change. We’ve still got about a week till October, but already the first yellows and oranges can be seen on the trees around campus, and it seems this fall’s going to be particularly beautiful. ⁣ ⁣ This short was taken looking north-west towards Vermont. If there’s a building or part of campus you’d like to see as the leaves change, and that’s visible from the Tower, make sure to let us know in the comments.⁣ ⁣ #dartmouthlibrary #dartmouthcollege #dartmouth #uppervalley #uppervalleyvtnh #newhampshirefall #vermont #vermontfoliage #vermontfall #vermontlife #vermontphotography #igers #vermontliving #vermontshots #vermontbyvermonters #fallfoliage #fallinvermont #travelvermont #newenglandfall #leafpeeping #newengland #hanovernh #collegecampus

Nestled along the Connecticut River, Hanover is famous for being home to the prestigious Dartmouth College, but this New England town has so much else on offer too. Hanover is quite a traditional small town and is one that boasts so much natural beauty, making it great for those who want to explore the great outdoors.

Things to Do in Hanover

People usually head to a small town’s Main Street when they are looking for something to do, and Hanover’s Main Street definitely won’t disappoint. The street is actually a part of the world-famous Appalachian Trail, meaning that plenty of hikers stop off in Hanover, giving the town a unique diversity. Even if you aren’t in the mood for a long walk, simply taking in a small section of the trail for an hour or two is immensely rewarding.

While you’re around Main Street, check out some of the independent stores here. From handmade pottery to second hand books to freshly-roasted coffee, the shopping selection provides everything that you would want from a relaxing getaway.

Where to Stay in Hanover

The Hannover Inn Dartmouth is one of the best hotels in town. It’s located on the Dartmouth campus, meaning that you’re only a short walk away from the heart of town. With chic, upscale rooms and incredible food, this is a hotel that will definitely complete your visit.

Narrowsburg is another riverside town that is bursting with natural beauty. Sitting on the banks of the Delaware River, Narrowsburg is just a short drive from New York City, making it ideal for a weekend away.

Things to Do in Narrowsburg

The Delaware River is the heart of this town, and locals tend to spend their free time indulging in outdoor activities around it. The Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River is always a highlight – stretching out for 73.4 miles, this river park is perfect for some canoeing or kayaking. On your way, you will pass the Darbytown Bridge, which dates back to 1810.

Of course, the town’s Main Street isn’t to be missed either. There is a quirky selection of stores to browse here, as well as some amazing restaurants.

Of course, if you’ve decided that you have had enough of small town life and want a taste of the hustle and bustle of the big city, NYC isn’t far away, making it ideal for a day trip. Don’t forget to also pop in to one of the OROGOLD stores in the city to treat your skin to a luxurious VIP facial!

Where to Stay in Narrowsburg

If you are looking for a hotel that is quaint, traditional, and ultra-luxurious, the Moonriver Inn won’t let you down. This gorgeous boutique hotel is in the town’s historic district, meaning that you will be walking distance from all of Narrowsburg’s best attractions.

Harpers Ferry sits at the point where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers meet, meaning that this small town has been a significant one throughout history. The town’s National Historic Park documents its rollercoaster past, but there is so much else on offer here too…

Things to Do in Harpers Ferry

Just about every visitor heads straight to the National Historic Park, where you will learn more about John Brown’s raid on the federal armory in 1859, where he was attempting to end slavery in the United States.

This is another small town on this list that also sits in the path of the Appalachian Trail. Although it’s not quite at the halfway point, many walkers refer to Harpers Ferry as the psychological midpoint of the trail, meaning that it has become a very popular gathering spot over the years.

If hiking isn’t your thing, soak up more history at St. John’s Episcopal Church, which was the only church to survive the Civil War, John Brown’s Fort, which was built in 1848, and the Heyward Shepherd Monument.

Where to Stay in Harpers Ferry

There are some truly gorgeous inns dotted around Harpers Ferry, but the one that comes most highly recommend is the Hillbrook Inn. Nestled within 30 acres of land, which once happened to be owned by George Washington, this elegant bed and breakfast is located a little way out of town, but more than makes up for this with its fairytale appeal.

Edenton, North Carolina

However, in addition to its rich heritage, Edenton also boasts incredible natural beauty and plenty of recreational activities, making it ideal for a short getaway.

Although technically a city, Riverside deserved a mention on this list, not only due to its name, but also because of its small town charm. Its jaw-dropping history, perfect climate, and intense beauty makes it well worth considering for a short break away.

Things to Do in Riverside

Riverside’s name comes from its prime location next to the Santa Ana River, and many of the popular activities here revolve around water. The Whitewater Preserve is one of the city’s most-loved spots, with both locals and tourists spending a large amount of time at this beautiful preserve, which protects the Whitewater River. Don’t worry about it getting too crowded either – the preserve stretches out for 2851 acres, so whether you want to float down a gentle creek, do some vigorous swimming, or relax in an inner tube, you will always be able to find an area to yourself.

There is plenty of culture to be found in Riverside too, with the Riverside Art Museum being a great place to start. Then, head on over to Heritage House, which dates back to the 1800s and will teach you about what it was like to live in Riverside during these times.

After that, it’s time for some shopping! The Galleria at Tyler is a must-visit, purely for its wide range of different brands. In addition to an amazing selection of fashion boutiques, you will also find an OROGOLD store in this mall, where you will be able to enjoy free product demonstrations, expert skin care advice, and so much more.

Where to Stay in Riverside

Not only does it boast a fantastic location just a couple of minutes walk from the heart of Riverside, but the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa also offers the best when it comes to accommodation, service, and amenities. This Spanish Mission-esque hotel, complete with its own five-storey rotunda, is famous for both its architecture and its spa. It’s a popular spot for day-visits, so you might as well spend the night here too!

Although technically a lakeside, rather than a riverside, town, Incline Village is too beautiful to not mention. Situated on the north banks of Lake Tahoe, Incline Village stands out from the other small towns that are sprinkled around the lake for its sheer elegance and uptown chic.

Things to Do in Incline Village

With such an incredible range of outdoor activities to enjoy, Incline Village has always been popular with those seeking adrenaline-pumping adventure. The peaks in the area are great for hiking in the summer months, with some truly majestic views to be expected, but then turn into a winter wonderland once the snow sets in, perfect for glade skiing.

If you would prefer to relax on the shore and soak up the scenery around you, head on over to the Lake Tahoe State Park, which is known for its vividly-blue pools of water. Just keep in mind that these are bone-chillingly cold! Not too far away from here is Sand Harbor, which is where you will find one of the prettiest beaches you will have ever seen.

If you would like to appreciate the views from a different perspective, there are plenty of charter boats available that will take you right out onto Lake Tahoe. Whether you want a relaxing cruise or would like to try your hand at some fishing, this is a great way to enjoy 360 degree views of this spectacular slice of America.

Where to Stay in Incline Village

If you are looking for the best, then book yourself in for a stay at the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe. The resort is packed with some great facilities, including two outdoor pools, three restaurants, and a spa, complete with a fully-equipped fitness center.

Although located in rural Iowa, Pella’s Dutch heritage sets it apart from many of the other small towns that surround it. Many often fondly refer to it as the “Little Netherlands” of the USA, and, if you visit, you will see exactly how true this is.

Things to Do in Pella

Begin by simply taking a stroll around town – you won’t be able to help but admire the ornate Dutch architecture, including authentic windmills and gardens. Even the cuisine here is Dutch-inspired, making it completely unlike any other town in the state. Speaking of the food in Pella, some of the Dutch specialties that you need to try are:

  • Oliebollen, which are cinnamon raisin dumplings
  • Pella bologna
  • Dutch letters, which are a sweet pastry
  • Poffertjes, which are mini pancakes
  • Gouda cheese

Visit Pella’s Historical Village to learn more about its past – it consists of 21 buildings that date back to the 1840’s. Wandering past the clog cobbler shop, bakery, puppet theater, and more really gives you a good idea of what the town used to look like back in the day.

If you happen to be visiting in May, then you’ll also be able to take part in the annual Tulip Time Festival, complete with parades, Dutch outfits, concerts and more, all of which come together to celebrate Dutch pride.

Where to Stay in Pella

There’s no question of where to stay in Pella – the Dutch-inspired Royal Amsterdam Hotel is a must. This redbrick building is just a few minutes away from the center of town, and in addition to its chic outdoor swimming pool, it also boasts one of the best restaurants in the area.

Follow the rivers throughout the USA and you will stumble upon some truly incredible small towns. Each one has its own strong sense of individuality, heritage, culture, and tradition, giving you a unique insight into some of the more lesser-known, but just as valuable, parts of the country.

Tour the Reina Sofia for 20th century Spanish art, including the famous Guernica by Picasso, or the Museo Nacional Del Prado for both Spanish and international masterpieces, with these two museums being at the top of every must-visit list.

If museums aren’t your thing, take a stroll around the Royal Palace, the largest palace in Europe, or simply explore the city streets, packed with shops, bars, restaurants, and churches. In addition to fashion boutiques, you will also find an OROGOLD store on Calle de Velazquez, where you can treat your skin to a luxury pampering. With beautiful architecture, landscaped gardens, and traditional flamenco dancers providing a lively atmosphere, it’s no surprise that Madrid is often the first point-of-call for tourists visiting Spain.

Valencia

Valencia skyline and coast

The third-largest city in Spain, Valencia is famous for being home to paella, which is Spain’s most famous dish. You will find it served up just about everywhere throughout the city, with it being most popular at lunchtime.

Where should you go for the best paella in Valencia?

Many locals would recommend Restaurante Levante, which specializes in a Valencian-style paella. La Pepica is also popular, with this restaurant serving up a delicious seafood paella. Since the city is so easily walkable, you could easily sample the dish from a few different restaurants in one mealtime, but don’t forget to also save room for some of the other regional specialties.

In addition to its cuisine, Valencia is also known for its contrasting architecture. The city’s old town takes you on a journey through its past, while the abundance of bold and futuristic architecture dotted around the place is a result of a decade of rapid development. Together, this gives the city a truly unique charm, all of which is emphasized by the miles of sandy beaches that run along the city’s edge.

Seville

Seville has made a name for itself by being the birthplace of flamenco, and the flamenco culture here really is at the forefront of the city’s vibe. It also happens to be the capital of Spain’s Andalusia region, and its popularity among artists, composers, and writers has given the city a charming bohemian ambience that it has managed to retain over the years.

While catching a few shows at the city’s flamenco bars is a must, take some time to soak up some of Seville’s history. Traditional architecture is everywhere here, from the cobbled streets of Santa Cruz in the city’s old town, to the extravagant Alcazar Palace, to ancient cathedrals.

Wondering if this is where Seville oranges come from?

It most definitely is, and the oranges are in season from the end of December to mid-February. However, most choose to visit between late February and March, because once the trees start blossoming, the entire city is filled with the tangy aroma of fresh oranges for about three weeks!

Barcelona

The capital of the Catalonia region of Spain, Barcelona is known for being vibrant, cosmopolitan, and packed with incredible art and architecture. Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia is usually where all tourists immediately go, and while this is definitely worth a visit, do check out some of the lesser-known landmarks also by Gaudi, such as the Casa Batllo.

Shopping is a very popular pastime in Barcelona, and while there are a few different shopping streets to choose from, just about every route will begin at Placa de Catalunya. While you’re shopping your way around the city, do stop off at one of the two OROGOLD Barcelona stores – you’ll be able to enjoy VIP facials, product demonstrations, and some of the best skin care advice you will have ever received.

If you would like to see the city from the outside, Mount Tibidabo is the place to go. You will be able to enjoy panoramic views across the whole city, including the sea that lies beyond. This is also a great place to hike or cycle, making it popular with adventure and nature lovers.

Don’t forget that Barcelona is also home to seven beaches, many of which are lined with tapas bars and restaurants. These areas become especially vibrant in the evenings, making it easy to see why Barcelona is often considered to be the liveliest city in Spain.

Granada

Granada skyline with castle

If you want to experience a region of Spain that is truly unlike any other, then Granada is the city to head to. Many would say that Grenada is Spain’s most beautiful city, a claim largely due to its Eastern and Moorish-style architecture. Of course, being located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains doesn’t hurt either, giving the city a stunning backdrop no matter which angle it is viewed from.

One of the city’s most famous landmarks is Alhambre, an ancient hilltop fortress complex that’s home to royal palaces, landscaped patios, and serene pools, all dating back to the Nasrid dynasty. This stunning palace, which overlooks the city from its high vantage point, is also where you will find some of the best-preserved examples of Islamic art and architecture, anywhere in the world.

While Alhambre may be the first place you visit, Granada has plenty else on offer too. Head to the Realejo district for narrow, cobbled streets bursting with tapas bars, or to Sacromonte, an area known for its flamenco culture, where white caves dot the hillsides.

Palma

Sleek, stylish, and trendy, Palma has quickly become an “it” destination for many. The capital of Mallorca, Palma is home to glitzy boutiques, brand new art galleries, and gleaming museums, giving the city the dose of culture that it was seeking.

Most of this city has been newly gentrified, meaning that you will never be short of hip bars, restaurants, and beach clubs to visit, along with tapas bars dotting every street.

Costa Brava

The Costa Brava is known for having some of the most natural and untouched stretches of coastline in all of Europe. Rugged and wild in many areas, while tamed and manicured in others, this is the Spanish city to head to if you’re seeking incredible beaches. Costa Brava is where you will find some of the best Blue Flag Beaches on the continent, with everything from serene horseshoe bays to secluded hidden coves.

Foodies will also appreciate all that the Costa Brava has to offer, with a wide selection of Michelin-starred restaurants to choose from here. In fact, El Celler de Can Roca boasts three of these coveted stars, making this the restaurant to book a table at if you’re celebrating a special occasion.

For art fans, the Costa Brava is where you will find the Dali Theatre-Museum, one of the last pieces of work by the master himself. Taking a walk around the museum is like enjoying a peek into the artist’s mind and his artistic journey.

Don’t forget that the Costa Brava is also known for being one of Spain’s most successful wine-producing regions. This means that there are plenty of wineries to visit here, especially if you head to the Emporda DO wine region, which stretches out for over 2000 hectares towards the north of Girona. The grapevines here have been in existence since the 5th century BC, so you really will be getting a taste of Spain’s past by treating yourself to a wine tasting.

Logrono

Logrono isn’t a city that many have heard of, but, if you mention the word Rioja, eyes start to light up. Rioja wines have really been taking the world by storm, and these come from the Rioja region of Spain, of which Logrono is the capital.

For those who want to explore the region’s vineyards and wineries, make Logrono your base. You will be able to access hundreds of different vineyards from here, while always returning back to a safe and vibrant city that’s packed with tapas bars to help soak up all of that alcohol!

Cantabria

View of street in Cantabria

If you want to visit a region of Spain that’s largely undeveloped when it comes to tourism, then Cantabria is the place to go. It may be lesser-known than some of the other Spanish cities, but it’s definitely more than deserving of a visit.

For starters, Cantabria boasts more than 220 kilometers of coastline, meaning over 90 sandy beaches to choose from. If you can’t pick, head to Laredo, where you will find some of the softest white sands.

History is abundant here too, with everything from the Palacio de la Magdalena to the Santo Toribio de Liebana Monastery to explore, the latter of which dates back to the 6th century. If you would like to see something even older, the prehistoric art in the Altamira Cave won’t disappoint. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has some of the best prehistoric art in all of Europe, with the work on the walls here dating back to 35,000 BC.

Those seeking natural beauty will also be impressed by Cantabria, since this is where the Picos de Europa National Park is located. Sitting in the Cantabrian Mountains, the landscape here is dominated by snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and beautiful gorgeous, making it the perfect spot for a hike.

Alicante

If you have been looking into the seaside regions of Spain, then Alicante has probably already made it onto your list. With its sunny weather and spectacular sea views, as well as its throbbing nightlife in the evenings, Alicante is never short of tourists, but many don’t tend to venture much further inland than the coastal areas.

However, Alicante really does have so much more to offer. From the 16th century fortress castle, the Castillo de Santa Barbara, that watches over the city, to the magnificent Mount Benacantail, to the cobbled streets of the city’s old town, there is so much to see in this sun-soaked city.

San Sebastian

Sitting on the coast of the Basque Country, San Sebastian is an elegant city that is famous for its food scene. Pintxo is what you will find on the menus here throughout the city, the Basque version fo tapas that consists of deliciously flavorful morsels of food ladened onto crusty bread. In the same way that other parts of Spain have tapas bars, San Sebastian is where you will find pintxo bars, with the dishes laid out on bar tops so that you can see what’s available before you choose.

Of course, there’s only so much eating you can do, but San Sebastian also boasts some stunning gold-sand beaches with picturesque views out over onto the Cantabrian Sea. Concha Beach, with its shell-shaped cove, is especially popular, while Zurriola Beach is the one to head to if you want to do some surfing.

There is plenty of history to experience in San Sebastian too. The city hall dates back to 1882, while the Museo de San Telmo was build in the late 1800’s, both sharing traditional architectural styles from that period.

Each city in Spain has so much of its own culture, heritage, and diversity, with each one leaving you with a totally different experience of the country. Whether you are seeking ancient history and art or relaxing beaches and lively nightlife, Spain really does have something for everybody.

Where to Go for the Best Asian Food in Sydney

Two friends eating sushi

For centuries, Australia has welcomed in immigrants from all over Asia, each one bringing with them unique culinary traditions. As a result, Asian food has thrived all over the country, with most locals growing up familiar with authentic Asian flavors.

While good Asian cuisine can be enjoyed all over Asia, Sydney in particular really stands out. There aren’t many other cities in the world, even in Asia, that offer such a broad variety of different cuisines from this part of the world. The fact that chefs in Sydney also have access to fresh, local, and often organic ingredients makes their food even better.

Whether you’re in the mood for Vietnamese rice paper rolls, a bowl of ramen, or crispy Wagyu beef, here’s where to go for some of the best Asian food in Sydney.

China Doll

View this post on Instagram

Here @chinadollsydney our dumplings are made using the most fresh produce available, constructed by our dumpling chef with over 30+ years experience 🥟🍹#Chinadoll #chinadollsydney #dumplings #fresh

A post shared by China Doll | Asian Restaurant (@chinadollsydney) on Jun 3, 2020 at 7:16pm PDT

Located at the historic and picturesque Finger Wharf, China Doll is the sister restaurant of the popular China Lane. This award-winning restaurant focuses on food that comes from Hong Kong, China, and Japan, with a few other southeast Asian influences thrown in for good measure too.

All of the produce used by the restaurant is fresh and ethically-sourced, with each meal complemented by stunning skyline views and an incredible wine menu.

What to Order

After taking a look at the a la carte menu, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice. From tea-smoked duck to chilli caramel pork belly, it’s a pretty difficult menu to pick from, and there are plenty of options for vegetarians too.

Don’t worry, the restaurant has you covered with their banquet-style menu. Modelled after a traditional and extravagant Chinese banquet, these set menus give you the opportunity to try smaller portions of the restaurant’s best dishes, including appetizers, mains, and deserts.

If you would prefer not to dine in, which is fair enough with the Coronavirus pandemic still rife in many areas, the restaurant also offers a special takeaway menu seven days a week, for both lunch and dinner.

A post shared by Long Chim (@longchim) on Sep 10, 2020 at 12:37am PDT

Although known for its creativity, Long Chim is still wonderfully authentic, with the reputation of serving up the best Thai food in Sydney. The menu here is inspired by street food dishes in Bangkok, with the name of the restaurant translating to “come and try” in English.

The ambience here is always lively and buzzing, just like the streets of Bangkok at night. This is a great place for spending some time with good friends, with the wine menu promising a merry evening.

What to Order

Thai dishes vary quite a bit when it comes to how spicy they are, so make your pick depending on how much heat you can handle. The baby squid dish features lashings of fresh chilli, while the fiery chicken mince is sizzling with flavor.

For something a little more toned down, the mashed prawn coconut milk curry is a star of the menu, with many people returning time and time again simply for this dish alone.

Long Chim makes good use of the fresh seafood that Sydney enjoys, with everything from baby squid to silver perch available.

The extensive cocktail list here is also definitely worth sampling from, bringing together a mix of flavors from all over Thailand. For a bold and impactful cocktail, the Thai Basil Smash is a must, which also incorporates a sprinkling of chilli flakes to give the drink a subtle heat. For an after-dinner tipple, order the Mid 21, a unique barrel-aged cocktail with a tantalizing balance of sweet, salty, and smoky.

A post shared by Zushi Sydney (@zushi_sydney) on Aug 7, 2020 at 9:34pm PDT

Zushi is inspired by traditional Japanese bars known as izakaya. These informal venues are popular after-work spots in Japan – a place to enjoy a few drinks, along with some tasty snacks, as a way to unwind after work.

Fondly referred to as the Japanese version of a tapas bar, Zushi is inventive and contemporary when it comes to their dishes, but without the extortionate price tag that you would usually expect to accompany a restaurant such as this.

The restaurant prides itself on using fresh and locally-sourced ingredients as much as possible, meaning that you can be sure that the produce is going to be of the highest quality.

What to Order

As always, the tasting menu is the best way to really sample what this restaurant is about. This gives you the chance to try a delectable selection of everything from sashimi to tempura to wagyu steak, with a simple bowl of steamed rice to balance out all of the flavors.

The restaurant also has an extensive vegetarian and vegan menu that even the most avid of meat-eaters will enjoy.

Zushi excels in the drinks area too, offering up a delightful array of Japanese sake and whisky, along with beers and wines. Japanese-inspired cocktails are a-plenty as well, with some options including:

  • The lychee orange blossom mojito
  • The chilli margarita
  • The Kawai midori
  • The Shinjuku smash

Of course, being located in Barangaroo, the restaurant enjoys some gorgeous waterfront views. You can make the most of these by booking yourself a table in the open-air dining area. Once you’ve eaten your fill, take a walk around this scenic area, and don’t forget to stop off at the OROGOLD Sydney store just a few blocks away. Your skin will need a bit of a pick-me-up after gorging on all of that delicious Japanese food!

A post shared by Great Aunty Three ™ (@greatauntythree) on Jun 26, 2020 at 6:37pm PDT

A small, family-run business that focuses on Vietnamese street food with a modern twist, Great Aunty Three is frequently rated as one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in the city. Many of the recipes used by this restaurant have been passed down through several generations, which is why you will struggle to find such authentic Vietnamese flavors anywhere else.

What to Order

There are a few dishes that you need to try at Great Aunty Three, beginning with the banh mi. Yes, you may have eaten banh mi several times in the past, but it won’t be anything like this one. Rather than the cold cuts of pork often included in these rolls, Great Aunty Three has put together some inventive fillings, including slow-roasted duck and watercress, or slow-roasted pork with crackling and green apple.

The pho here is another must-try, with the broth recipe being a well-kept family secret that can be traced back over 100 years. Slow-cooked, aromatic, and beautifully-balanced, choose between chicken, beef, or vegetable for a pho unlike any other.

Wash your meal down with a Vietnamese iced coffee – tall, strong, and dark, these coffees are deliciously addictive. Alternatively, go for a frappe, with the available flavors each having its own Vietnamese twist – the mixed berries and lychee is especially refreshing.

Lankan Filling Station

Open for dinner this eve, pick-up only. #lfs #takeaway

A post shared by Lankan Filling Station 🥥 (@lankanfillingstation) on Apr 29, 2020 at 8:40pm PDT

Ever had Sri Lankan food before?

For many people, the answer would be no, which is why a visit to the Lankan Filling Station is a must if you are ever in East Sydney. This restaurant’s menu enables diners to put together their own perfect meal – simply use the pencil provided to tick off what you would like, and it will soon be delivered hot and fresh to your table.

All of the recipes used here have come from Sri Lanka, guaranteeing authenticity with every bite.

What to Order

Hoppers are a must at any Sri Lankan restaurant. These unique pancakes, which are made from a fermented blend of rice flour and coconut and then shaped like a bowl, act as both your plate and your cutlery. Fold them, dip them, tear them up – this is food that is best eaten with the hands.

There are several curries to choose from to eat with your hoppers, whether you’re wanting something dry and sweet or spicy and sour. The flavors are all so well-balanced here, no matter what you may end up ordering.

The traditional sambols and pickles here can also be added on to accompany your meal. Try the dry-fried, whey-soaked chillis for a fiery kick, or the coconut, coriander, and lime for a lighter and more refreshing touch.

If you would like to try cooking up some Sri Lankan cuisine yourself at home, the Lankan Filling Station sells a variety of different ingredients to help you to do so. These can be purchased at the restaurant itself or online, with everything from red rice to roasted curry powders to pineapple jam to choose from.

Good Taiwanese food is a little harder to find, with many restaurants failing to replicate the authentic flavors of Taiwan. However, this is where Hu’s Inn excels – a restaurant inspired by traditional Taiwanese street food.

Hu’s Inn can be found in Chatswood, a part of Sydney famous for its Asian restaurants. After your meal, take some time to explore everything else that Chatswood has to offer, including the Chatswood OROGOLD store, where you can treat your skin to a VIP facial, free product demonstrations, and amazing expert skin care advice.

What to Order

There are so many options at Hu’s Inn, but if you’re only able to order a few dishes, make one of them the sizzling sirloin. This steak is cooked to perfection on premium cast iron, served up with a range of garnishes and a bed of rice. Vegetarians will love the steamed egg stuffed with oyster and enoki mushrooms, as well as slices of tofu.

Many of the dishes give you the option to choose your noodle type, with choices including:

  • Rice vermicelli
  • Egg noodles
  • Shaved noodles
  • Thick noodles

The sides are filling and comforting, from the sweet potato fries that have been seasoned with a plum powder to the crispy squid skewers. Dim sum lovers will appreciate the special section of the menu dedicated to these small plates, which are a must at any Taiwanese restaurant. Try the Siu Mai and the Xiao Long Bao is you really want to be impressed.

Just like all of the other restaurants on this list, Hu’s Inn appreciates the fresh seafood available to them, with these ingredients being the star of many dishes. Try the simmered clams with lufah noodles for an aromatic delight.

Lotus Dumpling Bar

View this post on Instagram

Come and celebrate Father's Day with us on the 5th or 6th of September at Lotus Dumpling Bar and enjoy a banquet made special just for him… Bookings are essential due to limited space! #lotusdumplingbar #lotusdininggroup #fathersday

A post shared by Lotus Dining Group (@lotusdininggroup) on Aug 21, 2020 at 3:49pm PDT

If your favorite thing about Chinese food is the dumplings, then the Lotus Dumpling Bar is the place to go. This restaurant has two specialties; dumplings and cocktails, and there’s no denying that the two really go hand-in-hand.

Even better, this restaurant has an open kitchen, meaning that you can watch the skilled chefs at work as they roll, fold, crimp, and pleat these delicious clouds of flavor.

What to Order

There are three main dumpling styles available here:

  • Steamed
  • Pan-fried
  • Wontons

Fillings are a mixture of traditional and inventive, from pork and chive to chicken and kimchi.

If you would like something other than dumplings (in which case, a different restaurant would probably be best!), the appetizer menu offers some extra variety, including fresh shucked oysters, salads, and savory pancakes.

The restaurant’s tasting menu gives you the opportunity to sample some of everything, along with a few extra, non-dumpling Chinese dishes.

Can’t pick between all of the dishes?

You won’t have to if you wait for one of the restaurant’s All You Can Eat events, giving you the chance to really fill up on these delicacies.

Since this restaurant is also renowned for its cocktails, it would be a shame not to try one…or a few! Although not Chinese, the sake here works well with the food, making it a popular accompaniment.

Whether you live in Sydney or you’re simply visiting for a while, you will find Asian restaurants everywhere you go. However, if you want to sample some of the very best, and most authentic, then the restaurants on this list all need to be tried.

12 Unusual Things to Do in Puerto Rico

street in Puerto Rico with houses

It’s easy to stick to the popular tourist attractions when visiting a country like Puerto Rico, but sometimes the best way to really immerse yourself in a new culture is by stepping off the beaten track.

If you really want to experience the very best of Puerto Rico, here are 12 unusual things that you should definitely try to do.

Sip Authentic Local Coffee at Hacienda Buena Vista

View this post on Instagram

1850’s Coffee/Caco/Corn plantation in the Hills of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The restoration and preservation of this site was remarkable, and by far one of the best tours I’ve EVER been on. 🇵🇷 #poncepride #ponce #placespuertorico #cacao #coffeeplantation #waterfall #paralanaturaleza #haciendabuenavista #watermill

A post shared by Connor McGinty (@captain_connoropaul) on Dec 20, 2019 at 9:56am PST

Puerto Rico is famous for its coffee, and while there may be several coffee farms that are open for visitors to explore, these tend to be high-production farms that are pretty impersonal – nothing like the traditional coffee farms that once dotted the landscape.

However, Hacienda Buena Vista is one of the originals – it first came about in 1833, quickly becoming one of the busiest plantations in the country.

The farm still operates in the same way that it did back in the day, making it the best place to taste some truly authentic Puerto Rican coffee. In addition to drinking the coffee, you will also be able to tour the grounds, use the machines, meet the livestock, and learn so much about Puerto Rico’s coffee industry.

Eat Your Way Around Mayaguez

If you love Puerto Rican food, then a visit to Mayaguez is a must. This city can be credited with the creation of some of the most iconic dishes in the country, making it the best place to go if would like to sample them.

What should you eat in Mayaguez?

Here are a few must-try’s:

  • Brazo Gitano – a sponge filled with jelly used to make a sweet dessert roll – there are usually several flavors to choose from
  • Sangria de Fido – inspired by sangria, but made with burgundy wine, rum and fruit juices – Bacardi once tried to buy this recipe but the creator of it refused
  • Local Ice Cream – Rex Cream is an establishment famous for its locally-made ice creams, with a number of alternative flavors, along with the classics, to pick from
  • Local Breads – from pan sobado to pan de agua, Mayaguez is where you will find some of the best bread in the country

Puerto Rico is famous for its amazing beaches, but there’s no denying that these can get a little crowded at times.

If you want to get away from the crowds, which is especially important during this Coronavirus pandemic, then Isla Culebrita is the place to go.

This uninhabited island can only be reached by ferries and water taxis – anything else is not allowed. This puts many people off visiting, other than those who want to experience some pure, untouched natural beauty.

The island stretches out for just over a mile, but while it might be small, you can be guaranteed that there won’t be any crowds here. In fact, most tourists don’t even realize that it exists!

Wondering what there is to do here?

In addition to swimming, diving, and snorkelling, you could also spend quite a bit of time exploring the tide pools, checking out the old lighthouse, and visiting the beach that sea turtles nest on.

Visit the El Cemi Museum

Puerto Rico is full of incredible museums, but if you’re looking for something a little different, give the El Cemi Museum a try. The museum is dedicated to sacred spiritual objects, and its architecture mimics this. Set against a mountainous backdrop, this museum will impress before you even step inside its mouth-like doors.

Once indoors, you will be able to browse exhibits with collections that date back centuries, each one dedicated to unusual objects that were once used in religious ceremonies. This is definitely one of Puerto Rico’s quirkier attractions, making it great for those seeking something a little different, but still cultural and historical.

Watch Free-Roaming Monkeys

Love nature?

If so, Monkey Island, otherwise known as Cayo Santiago, won’t disappoint. It is home to around 1200 free-roaming monkeys, who date back to a group of 400 that were brought to the island from India in 1938 for research purposes. Scientists wanted to study the wild behavior of these monkeys without any human interference around, and this small island was the perfect site.

The monkeys have bred over the generations, and are now being studied by the University of Puerto Rico’s Caribbean Climate Research Center.

Of course, since the point of the island is for monkeys to roam free without any human contact, visitors are not allowed to walk around the island. The best way to see the creatures is either by boat, or by snorkelling in the surrounding waters. This is an experience that can really only be had in Puerto Rico, making it something you shouldn’t miss out on.

If you pick the snorkelling option, bring your diving gear too because there’s a nearby sunken barge waiting to be explored.

Tour La Casa Estrecha

The narrowest house in the world! ☺️👌🏼 #oldsanjuan #puertorico #lacasaestrecha #travel #travelphotography

A post shared by 𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗥𝗔 𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗝𝗢 (@_sandravallejo_) on Feb 18, 2020 at 11:44am PST

Located in Old San Juan, La Casa Estrecha, which translates to English as The Narrow House, is a wonderfully unusual attraction to explore. This house used to be an alleyway, so is sandwiched between two larger buildings, measuring just 5.3 feet wide. This makes it the narrowest house in the world!

The house was bought by an architect when it was a total ruin, but it was then transformed into a liveable, yet extremely unique, narrow house.

Guided tours are available Monday to Friday, but you will need to phone ahead to book your slot.

Once you’re done, take a stroll over to Plaza Las Americas, a large shopping mall that sits in the heart of San Juan. If you’re expecting to find good pork at a place called Pork Highway, this is exactly what you’ll get. Locally known as La Ruta del Lechon, this road stretches out for three miles and is packed with restaurants that specialize in pork.

The road is also dotted with open-air smoke pits, where you’ll find whole pigs roasting on skewers. This is the basis of one of the most popular dishes in the country, known simply as lechon, where the pork is covered in a special mix of spices and sauces and then spit-roasted.

From sausages and stews to casseroles and sandwiches, La Ruta del Lechon is the best place to go in Puerto Rico when you’re hungry. It’s also an area that always has such a vibrant and energetic ambience – you’ll find plenty of singing and dancing here, with a festive atmosphere at every single one of the restaurants.

Puerto Rico is the ideal surfing destination: warm waters year-round, fun local surfing culture, and conditions ranging from easy, two-foot waves over a sandy bottom to tall, fast-moving barrels with reef breaks. ・・・ 📷 @padialo

If you are visiting Puerto Rico between January and March, then Rincon is a must. This city, which is nestled away in the north west of the country, isn’t very well-known – you’re unlikely to find it mentioned in most tourist guides.

However, each year between January and March, hundreds of humpback whales pass through the waters here as they head towards the Caribbean. There are several observation spots around the city, with this really being a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

If you happen to enjoy surfing too…

The waves at Rincon are wild and exhilarating. This is where the 1968 World Surfing Championship was held, and it gave Puerto Rico quite the reputation among the surfing community after that.

There are plenty of areas in Puerto Rico where you can experience nature at its finest, each one with its own unique ecosystem. However, the Rio Abajo Forest Reserve is quite different…

This protected area is actually a number of different forests that have merged into one over the years, meaning that you will encounter so many different habitats here. From wet rainforests and overgrown ravines to arid caves and empty sinkholes, the conditions within the forest seem to change around each bend.

As a result, you will also find such a wide range of wildlife here, from hawks to boa constrictors. This is also one of the only places in the world where you will be able to see the endangered Puerto Rican parrot in the wild. Many of the other creatures here also cannot be seen in the wild anywhere else on the planet, making this reserve quite the special place.

If this forest sounds appealing to you…

It would be worth hiring a guide to take you around.

Yes, you may be tempted to go it on your own, and there are plenty of areas that are absolutely safe for you explore, with more than 70 different walking trails to choose from. However, other parts of the reserve can be quite difficult to navigate, making it worth sticking with someone who knows that they are doing.

Unlike all of the other parks in Puerto Rico, the Camuy River Cave Park is located inside a cave. To be more specific, this underground cave system is the largest in the country, plunging you into darkness soon after you enter.

There are lights dotted along the walkways so that you can see where you’re going, and also to help you view the stalagmites and stalactites around you. Some of these date back 45 million years, with the most impressive being located deeper inside this labyrinth.

There are plenty of tour guides around to point out different features of the cave, from special rocks to caverns and sinkholes. You will also be accompanied by the sound of bat wings making their way through the complex underground network.

Do you know what “chinchorrear” means?

In the official sense, it means roadside food stalls, but locals have also turned it into a verb, meaning wandering your way through various food stalls and sampling their varied goods.

Puerto Rico is home to many areas that are great for people who want to chinchorrear, but Pinones is one of the best.

The location of this strip of land itself isn’t very impressive – it sits along a local highway. However, it’s packed with local food stalls and food trucks, along with tables, fire pits, smokehouses, grills, and more.

As you can imagine, there is a hugely festive atmosphere here, along with a vast menu of dishes to try. Sticky rice bowls, fried bananas, lechon – just about every local dish you could think of can be found here.

Puerto Rico is such a fascinating and diverse country to visit – no matter what your interests may be, you will find so much here that appeals to you. Whether this involves immersing yourself in the hustle and bustle of various Puerto Rican cities or taking some time out to explore the country’s untouched natural beauty, Puerto Rico is somewhere that will draw you back time and time again.

Napa Valley is always a joy to visit, but fall makes this experience all the more special. This part of Northern California is home to a large number of both native and non-native trees, and every single one of these turns into a fiery shade each fall.

The vineyards that Napa Valley is famous for put on their own vibrant display. Once October rolls around, all of the leaves on the thousands of grapevines turn to a vivid amber color, providing stunning views all around.

While You’re There…

October happens to be quite a busy time for vineyards, and, if you plan things right, you may be able to take part in some of their seasonal activities, such as grape stomping.

Located in Golden Gate Park, the San Francisco Botanical Garden features 55 acres of magnificent foliage each fall. Due to the vast array of different plants here, 9000 species from around the world to be specific, the range of colors is spectacular – from the purple/reds of the dogwoods to the striking gold of the gingko trees.

While 60-90 minute tours of the gardens are available, you can also opt to wander the grounds yourself to take in all of the incredible fall foliage. Each garden has a unique theme, whether this is related to a country or to something else, such as the Ancient Plants or the Garden of Fragrance, giving you something different to look at with each area that you visit.

Be sure to make some time to also take a look at the Japanese Tea Garden, which is located in Golden Gate Park too. This is the oldest public Japanese garden in the USA, and the Japanese maples here, with koi ponds and a zen garden serving as a serene backdrop, also transform into dazzling shades each fall.

Fall falls upon Hope Valley in around mid September, so you’ll need to act fast if you were hoping for a fall getaway this year. Located in Alpine County, Hope Valley is considered to be a hidden gem – even many locals don’t know about this gorgeous spot.

In the fall, the dense willows and aspens here put on a vibrant display of bright gold foliage, making it look as though the hillsides and meadows are up in flames. There are plenty of outdoor activities to do here too, from fishing to hiking to camping.

Feeling Adventurous?

Just south of Hope Valley, just before South Lake Tahoe, you’ll find a small creek, which is the site that thousands of salmon choose to spawn at this time of year. Time your visit right and you’ll be able to see their offspring make their way into the world for the first time.

Located in Cupertino, the Rancho San Antonio Preserve is a popular state park with just under 4000 acres of grounds to explore. With much of this being open space, not many people think of the preserve when it comes to fall foliage, but if you head on over to where the majestic oaks and maples are growing, you will be treated to quite the sight.

In addition to the gorgeous fall foliage here, you will also be able to see the persimmon trees full of flowers, adding a beautiful contrast to your surroundings.

Getting Active

To really explore the beauty of the Rancho San Antonio Preserve, you’ll need to make your way through some of the park’s trails. These snake through the landscape for 24 miles, and there are several options to choose from:

  • Wildcat Loop Trail – this three mile trail will take you through fern-filled canyons and open meadows, before reaching a viewpoint that showcases both Mt. Tamalpais and Mt. Hamilton
  • Stephen E. Abbors Trail – this trail, which stretches out for just under four miles, is a little more challenging with its 1600 ft gain in elevation. It climbs up the Black Mountain for panoramic views of the bay area, before linking up with some of the other trails in the park
  • Black Mountain Trail – this four mile trail also takes you up the Black Mountain, but with a different route that showcases views of the Santa Clara Valley and Stevens Creek Canyon

For those who like wildlife, there is plenty to be seen throughout the park. However, be aware that you may also end up sighting a mountain lion – if this happens, leave the area immediately and report this to a ranger.

Located just north-east of Sacramento, even the drive to Plumas County will impress, with Highway 70 being designated a National Scenic Byway. The entire road is lined with Black Oak, Mountain Dogwood, and Big Leaf Maple, treating you to huge swathes of crimsons, reds, and golds as you drive along.

Once you get there, follow the area’s Leaf Peeping Map so that you can figure out the best spots to head to. Some of these include:

  • Feather River Canyon
  • Indian Valley
  • Lake Almanor
  • Bucks Lake

When to Visit

Fall touches upon different areas at various times, but due to the diversity of nature in Plumas County, you have quite a long viewing season when it comes to fall foliage. Any time between September and mid November would work, although you would need to adjust your route depending on the day you are visiting.

Fortunately, Plumas County offers daily leaf peeping reports each fall, which should help you to plot the perfect route.

Apple Hill

A post shared by Apple Hill® (@applehill) on Aug 24, 2020 at 12:30pm PDT

For many people, the first thing that comes to mind when fall is mentioned is apples, and this is exactly what you will find at Apple Hill. Located in El Dorado County, Apple Hill is packed with fruit orchards that really come to life each fall.

Of course, picking your own apples is a must-do activity here, and there are so many different varieties to choose from, including:

  • Golden Delicious
  • Rome Beauty
  • Fuji
  • Pink Lady
  • Granny Smith

The farms in this area also grow a number of other fall crops too, from grapes and pumpkins to plums and persimmons. High Hill is known for its apple milkshakes, while Rainbow Orchards is famous for its apple cider donuts, making this trip a must for eager foodies.

If you can’t decide where to go, the Apple Hill Growers Association provides maps and routes to enable you to make the most of your visit.

One thing to keep in mind as you are driving around the area is that the roads here can sometimes be treacherous. There will likely be so much out of your window that will constantly be grabbing your attention, but the roads also feature quite sharp bends, so make sure that you keep your wits about you.

Getting Ready for Christmas

Once you have eaten your fill of fresh fall foods, make your way over to Indian Rock Tree Farm. Since this isn’t a part of the Apple Hill Growers Association, it’s considered to be quite the hidden gem, with many visitors not realizing that this little slice of Christmas sits just around the corner from them.

Indian Rock Tree Farm is known for being one of the oldest Christmas tree farms in the area, and they produce several different varieties that will soon be used as Christmas trees. From the Douglas fir to the Canaan fir to the Sequoia, these evergreens may not put on a colorful display of fall foliage, but they are still impressive enough to warrant a visit.

Downtown Sacramento

Sacramento, you're pretty 💛

There aren’t many cities that offer the same level of fall foliage to compete with the many countryside options out there, but Sacramento is different. With its nickname being the City of Trees, the downtown area of Sacramento, along with parts of midtown, are covered with dense tree canopies that were designed to protect the city from the sweltering heat of the summer sun.

Come fall, these trees break out into a mind-boggling array of fall colors, which gently flutter to the ground whenever a strong wind blows. The contrast between city life around you and the beautiful foliage above also adds an ethereal appeal to fall in Sacramento, making this something that everyone should experience at least once.

Exploring the City

As you make your way around Sacramento to check out the fall foliage, you will likely come across some of the city’s most famous attractions. The Governor’s Mansion, Sutter’s Fort, and the California State Capitol Building are must-see spots for history buffs, while those into art and culture should check out the Crocker Art Museum, which is famous for being one of the first major art museums to open in the country.

Shopaholics will feel right at home in Sacramento too – there are several big shopping streets here where you can indulge in some retail therapy. In amongst the many different shopping centers sits the Arden Fair Mall, which is home to over 165 stores. Some of the most-loved brands in the country call this mall home, along with OROGOLD, where you will be able to enjoy free product demonstrations and luxury facials.

Located in Woodside, Filoli Gardens is recognized worldwide for its abundance of natural beauty and sheer diversity when it comes to trees and other plants. The fall foliage here is not to be missed, with the gardens inspired by a traditional English country estate.

The formal gardens here are usually what attract the most visitors, but, just beyond this, you will find the Filoli Nature Preserve. If you want to see fall foliage in a wilder setting, this is the area to head to, with redwood stands, oak forests, and so much more. Wildlife is plentiful in the area as well, whether this may be deer, lizards, or an amazing variety of birds.

There is a mile-long nature trail that visitors can explore here, which ends up at the Sally MacBridge Nature Center, another fascinating experience. There are several domestic animals that live in the nearby field, from turkeys to California quail, all of which look especially stunning with the fall foliage as their backdrop. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Once you’re done with all of that walking, head to the garden’s restaurant, called the Quail’s Nest Cafe. The focus here is on fresh, local, and sustainable food, with many of the ingredients used coming from the gardens themselves.

A Virtual Visit

With all that’s going on in the world right now due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Filoli Gardens understands that many people are going to be missing out on their fall foliage this year. Fortunately, the garden offers the opportunity for virtual visits, meaning that even those on the opposite side of the world will be able to appreciate the beauty that this garden offers throughout the year.

With so much color and beauty all around, many would consider fall to be the most spectacular time of year. Whether leaf peeping is something that you do annually, or you simply want to take some time out of your busy life this year to appreciate the magnificent fall foliage around you, these Northern California spots are guaranteed to not disappoint.

A post shared by Veniero's Pastry (@venierospastry) on Aug 9, 2020 at 12:37pm PDT

Venieros first opened their doors in New York City way back in 1894, and even today, the bakery still offers a unique glimpse into old New York. Its patterned tiled floors and stained glass ceilings, enhanced by mirrored walls, will make you feel as though you have stepped back in time when you enter this shop.

This is a bakery with a heavy Italian influence. In fact, the founder has won several awards for his cakes and pastries, not only in New York but also in Rome and Bologna. You may have also seen this bakery featured on TV – from Good Morning America on ABC to Law & Order on NBC, this little shop has really made a name for itself.

Wondering what sort of baked goods they actually sell?

A few of their traditional Italian specialties include:

  • Italian butter cookies
  • Cannoli
  • Tiramisu
  • Biscotti
  • Cheesecake

Although traditional baked goods are what they focus on, this bakery also stays ahead of the game when it comes to getting creative. Their lobster tails are a mix between a traditional cannoli and a croissant – something that every pastry lover needs to try!

After sampling as much as possible, walk off all of that sugar by taking a stroll around New York City. Don’t forget to stop off at one of our OROGOLD stores; you’ll find three in the city, and each one is perfect for giving your skin a little pick-me-up if you’ve been indulging in overly-sweet baked goods.

Established in 1860, Zalatimo Sweets began as a small pastry shop in Jerusalem’s Old City, with a sweet breakfast filo pastry called Mutabak being the shop’s specialty. Over time, the shop grew in popularity, until it expanded into an adjacent shop a few years later.

There are now 13 branches of Zalatimo Sweets, with most of these in Jordan. Their Middle Eastern pastries are now even being imported into the USA, where they are sold by Walmart.

Wondering what their Mutabak tastes like?

It’s sweet, warm, and crunchy, with a delicate powdered sugar topping. You can have it filled with toasted nuts or a tangy sheep’s cheese – either way, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find fresh Mutabak these days, meaning that most people flock to Zalatimo Sweets whenever they have a craving for this traditional pastry.

Not only are they the oldest patisserie in Copenhagen, but Conditori La Glace also prides themselves on being the best. It was founded back in 1880, and has since been through six generations of the same family.

The interior of this bakery looks just like a traditional tearoom, taking you straight back in time. The vast array of cakes available here is enough to impress anyone, with some of their most popular ones being:

  • The Sports Cake – this recipe was created in 1891 for a theater production called Sports Man. It features caramelized choux pastry, a macaroon layer at the bottom, and then a filling of whipped cream and crushed nougat
  • HC Hat – this cake won the Cake of the Year contest in 2005, and it’s easy to see why. Its chocolate biscuit base is topped with a caramel mousse, along with a caramel ganache that has been infused with citrus
  • Karen Blixen – this cake was inspired by Karen Blixen, a Danish author who had her own coffee farm in Africa. The recipe dates back to 1992, and consists of a chocolate bottom topped with a coffee mousse and a mocha truffle, along with toasted hazelnuts and chocolate decorations

If you’re interested in learning more about baking from the masters themselves, Conditori La Glace organizes courses that teach how to work with chocolate, as well as how to make their Sportskage (another of their delicious cakes). You can also attend lectures about the patisserie’s history and heritage.

Feeling thirsty?

Try the tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. This is the only place in Copenhagen that still serves these beverages from a pot, with refills on offer too. Many would say that this is a tradition well worth supporting!

Famous for being the oldest bakery in Texas, Naegelin’s Bakery has been running since 1868. It is located in a 150-year old building, and many of its original features have been retained. You’ll even find a drive through window and a small retro-style patio here!

White bread was what the bakery was originally selling when they first opened, soon followed up by pumpernickel. After that, pastries became a focus, and the apple strudel produced here is famous for being one of the best in the world.

The ingredients used in these baked goods are locally-sourced, and the pastries and bread are always fresh. The opportunity to be able to sample a 150 year old recipe that still tastes amazing in this day and age is a great way to really take a step back into America’s past.

Can’t decide what to order?

Some of their must-try baked goods include:

  • Apple strudel (go for cherry or peach if you aren’t an apple fan)
  • Chocolate dip macaroon
  • Black Forest double layer cake
  • German chocolate pie
  • Pretzel sticks

If you’re not able to visit the store, the bakery also offers two day shipping, meaning that you can enjoy their delicious baked goods no matter where in the country you may be!

A historic, Parisian-style cafe, Cafe Tortoni was founded in Buenos Aires in 1858 by a French immigrant. It has moved locations just once since, and although it has not remained in the same family, the various owners over the years have all strived to retain this cafe’s historic charm.

While the baked goods here are always delectable, the cafe has also made a name for itself by being quite a trendy place to be. A number of celebrities have visited the cafe, which has also made an effort to involve itself in local art and culture. In the basement, you will find performances by jazz and tango musicians, along with poetry and book readings and contests. The cafe’s library, along with its traditional games room, adds to its old-time charm.

Hofbaeckerei Edegger-Tax is one of the oldest bakeries on this list, having been established way back in 1569. Although famous for its ornate wooden shop facade, which was hand-carved in 1896, what really sets this bakery apart is the high quality of their traditional baked goods.

There is a huge variety on offer here, from breads to pastries to cakes and cookies. For those wanting a bite of the past, this is the only bakery that sells the very same bread that was supplied to the House of Habsburg in Austria, which was one of the most influential royal houses in all of Europe.

Although this bakery specializes in traditional recipes, many of their long-time customers are celiac sufferers. As a result, the bakery has now come up with a full range of gluten-free products, which are proving to be extremely popular.

Recognized as being the oldest business in San Francisco that is still in operation, the Boudin Bakery has been around since 1849. They now have 29 locations around San Francisco, which should give you an idea of just how popular they have become!

What is this bakery known for?

They produce a variety of different baked goods, but sourdough is their specialty. They don’t use commercial yeast here, and instead have been using the same mother dough since they first began, giving you a distinct texture and flavor that you would never be able to find anywhere else.

In order to really showcase their talents, the bakery now serves up full meals that make use of their breads, from baguette burgers to sourdough pizzas.

If you would like to see some of their master bakers at work, head to the Boudin at the Wharf location – not only is this where you will find their famous cafe, but you will also be able to watch their breads being created through a 30 foot observation window. Even better, this is fitted out with a two-way intercom system, meaning that you can ask these master chefs any baking questions you may have.

Still want to learn more?

The bakery also has their own museum, free for people to tour. Learn more about San Francisco’s different emigrants, as well as how the bakery’s famous sourdough is actually made.

Once you have eaten your fill, head on over to the OROGOLD San Francisco store. All of those carbs won’t be doing your skin any favors, making this the perfect stop to give your skin a little TLC.

No list about bakeries would be complete without a mention of one in Paris, and La Maison Stohrer happens to be the oldest in the city. It was opened in 1730, and earned its reputation by being a favorite amongst royal families.

Creativity has always been important for this bakery – this is where Baba au Rhum was created – a brioche pastry that has been soaked in rum syrup and filled with candied fruits. There are now several different versions available, with this being one of their must-try pastries.

The bakery also has a restaurant that serves up an incredible savory spread of starters and mains, with breads, pastries, and baking-related cooking techniques taking center stage on the menu. Everything is made on-site and is always fresh, guaranteeing a delicious meal with each and every visit.

Baked goods play a huge part in many cultures and traditions around the world, making it important to support those older businesses that are trying their best to keep history alive. Whether you’re in the mood for a sweet treat or a classic loaf, a visit to one of these bakeries will never disappoint.

If you’re looking for an exclusive, tropical beach vacation, you won’t be disappointed with the Maldives. This is possibly one of the most famous vacation destinations out there, and now is the perfect time to tick the Maldives off from your bucket list.

Things to Do

With over 1000 islands to explore in the Maldives, many visitors usually spend their time island-hopping, trying to fit as much as possible into their itinerary. However, in the time of social distancing, this wouldn’t be wise – you want to try to keep your movements to a minimum.

Fortunately, the Maldives makes this easy. Secluded outdoor activities are the norm here, whether you spend your days diving and snorkeling or simply relaxing on a quiet stretch of beach.

Where to Stay

Over-water villas are also extremely popular in the Maldives, and these tend to be much safer than a hotel, minimizing your contact with other people.

Soneva is a resort that offers luxury water villas, each one complete with everything from personal gyms and plunge pools to water slides and wine cellars, meaning that you won’t need to venture too far from your villa during your stay.

Oman was seeing a rapid increase in tourism numbers before the Coronavirus outbreak, with more and more people from all over the world discovering what this amazing country has to offer. While many parts of Oman can get pretty crowded, Musandam tends to be one of the least-visited areas, partly due to the fact that it is an island that’s largely cut off from the mainland.

Things to Do

Its isolated location makes Musandam perfect for a socially distanced vacation. Explore the coastline on a traditional dhow cruise, and then spend some time adventuring underwater by snorkelling.

Renting a car here is a good idea – this gives you the opportunity to take short road trips around the island, driving through its small villages and historic forts.

Of course, to actually get to Musandam, you will likely need to first fly into Muscat. Although the capital city is quite a busy one, most businesses have put safety measures in place, meaning that a brief stint here is still doable. One must-visit spot in Oman is the Bareeq Al Shatti Mall, where you will find an OROGOLD boutique store – stop here to treat your skin to a luxurious VIP facial and free product demonstrations.

Where to Stay

If you’re looking for exquisite luxury, the Six Senses Zighy Bay is one of the best resorts in Musandam. It sits on a private bay and sandy beach, giving you the chance to soak up the sun without having to worry about other people nearby.

The resort is also known for its world-class spa. Unlike many others around the world, the spa here only uses natural products, combining these with a mixture of both Eastern and Western techniques.

The Algarve is the southernmost region in Portugal, and it has certainly become much more famous in recent years. While most people stop off in Algarve after taking in all that the larger cities have to offer, there is definitely enough to do here to dedicate your entire vacation to the area.

Things to Do

The Algarve is known for its contrast and diversity, meaning that you will find plenty to do here, even while socially distancing. Spend time on the beaches, visit historic ruins, and stroll along the towering cliffs.

This is a region that is fantastic no matter the time of year – it’s known for having one of Europe’s best climates, and is enjoyable in all seasons.

Where to Stay

You will find several secluded resorts throughout the Algarve, each one perfect for keeping yourself well-isolated. However, if you really want to treat yourself, head to the EPIC SANA Algarve.

This wellness resort is set within a stunning pine forest, and overlooks the Praia Falesia beach. With several restaurants, landscaped gardens, five outdoor pools and a fully-equipped wellness center, complete with an extensive menu of holistic spa treatments, you’ll find pretty much everything you could need right here.

You will find the Whitsunday Islands just off the coast of Central Queensland, and Hayman Island is the most northerly of them all. Located on the Great Barrier Reef, this private island is only about 294 hectares in size, but it truly is a tropical paradise.

Things to Do

Hayman Island is home to such a rich array of biodiversity, making it the perfect destination for nature lovers. Since this island is pretty exclusive, it doesn’t get too crowded, meaning that you will easily be able to socially distance here.

Water sports are popular, especially those that take you up-close to the Great Barrier Reef, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also one of the great wonders of the world. A trip to the famous Whitehaven Beach is also a must – you can only access it by boat, helicopter or seaplane.

Where to Stay

The InterContinental Hayman Island Resort is known for being one of the best on the island. In addition to a handful of different swimming pools, this resort also has one that’s seven times the size of an Olympic pool. You’ll also find several sports facilities, a beauty salon, restaurants, a retail mall, and more here.

The resort offers several activities for guests to take part in too, limiting your outside exposure. Whether you want to go catamaran sailing or try your hand at some fishing, the resort will help you with all of this.

If you want to go somewhere where you really won’t see much of other people, then Fogo Island in Canada is the destination to choose. This is Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest offshore island, with the only way to access it being by ferry.

Things to Do

The beauty of Fogo Island is that there isn’t much to do here. Its dreamy location makes it perfect for exploring the great outdoors, with everything from the sea-cliff paths to the dense forests to the meandering coastline worth checking out.

The island’s art scene has also recently had quite the resurgence. The Fogo Island Gallery is a must for art-lovers, where you will find regularly-changing exhibitions from both local and residential artists. There are several other art galleries dotted around the island too, each one creating and selling beautiful pieces.

Foodies out there may be apprehensive after hearing that there are only about ten restaurants, cafes and pubs on the island, but don’t let this put you off. What the island lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality – expect fresh seafood from the harbor, foraged plants and berries, and locally-farmed meat.

Where to Stay

If you have ever heard of Fogo Island, then you probably also know about the Fogo Island Inn – the place that brought the island to the attention of the masses. This award-winning hotel actually sits on its own little island, and each guest room has floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase the dramatic views.

In addition to the scenery all around it, the hotel boasts a few extra features that make it extra-special:

  • Wood-fired saunas
  • Outdoor hot tubs
  • A library
  • An art gallery (the above-mentioned Fogo Island Gallery)
  • A cinema

The vast expanse of the Gobi Desert makes it easy to keep yourself away from others – perfect for a post-Coronavirus getaway. The Gobi-Altai Mountains are in the Gurvansaikhan National Park, where you will be able to try a variety of traditional activities.

Things to Do

Camel rides over the sand dunes aren’t just a fun activity here – they are a mode of transport. This is the most efficient way to get around the desert, whether you then plan on hiking up a mountain or looking for dinosaur fossils.

A few spots in the area worth a visit include:

  • Yol Valley – the lushness of this region will surprise you, with steep valley having been carved out by an ancient river
  • Tugrigiin Shiree – home to a famous dinosaur fossil showing two dinosaurs fiercely in combat
  • Bulgan Sum – a small nomadic village that is famous for its organically grown produce
  • Flaming Cliffs – these magnificent cliffs emit a mystical orange glow at sunrise and sunset

Where to Stay

Gers, otherwise known as yurts, are the most common form of accommodation in Mongolia, and the Three Camel Lodge has done theirs up in the most luxurious of manners.

Each ger opens straight out onto the desert and features hand-painted furniture and hand-made decor, while also being very sustainable.

In addition to cooking up delicious meals with ingredients from their on-site greenhouse, this hotel also offers a number of exciting activities to guests, such as:

  • Camel and horseback rides
  • Mongolian cooking classes
  • Mongolian films in their private cinema ger
  • Traditional massages and spa treatments in the dedicated massage ger
  • A shop filled with authentic local goods

If you have started to get the travel bug after spending so much time indoors, you’re not alone. While it may not yet be safe to travel to and from many destinations, there’s no harm in planning a trip for the future. Social distancing is likely to be around for quite a while, even if and when Covid-19 gets under control, making it worth taking this into account when planning your next adventure.

Sunsets over the ocean just never get old 😍 – No matter how many sunsets I see, I still find myself excited for each one, as the anticipation builds. What colors will appear, how will the clouds form, or will anything even happen? I think it’s this unpredictable beauty that makes each one such a blessing 🌅

Secret beaches always have such a special feel to them, and this is exactly what you will find at Shark Fin Cove. Hidden away off Highway 1, this beach is named after its shark fin-shaped outcrop just out in the water.

This sandy beach is surrounded by looming sandstone cliffs, and while it may look small, there’s plenty of space here to give people privacy. The fact that the only way to access this beach is by a steep rocky path puts many of the crowds off, even though the path is only a third of a mile in length.

What’s there to do here?

There’s isn’t much in the way of facilities, but the natural wonders that you will find here are bound to keep you busy for quite a while. Don’t forget to also spend some time exploring the sea cave that has been carved out by the waves over the years.

Florida is known for its picturesque beaches, but the Grayton Beach State Park, which sits on the Gulf Coast, is one of the state’s finest. This beach sprawls out for 400 acres, boasting clean white sands and a coastal dune lake that is packed with wildlife, along with fishing and paddling opportunities.

One of the features that really helps this beach to stand out is the fact that it is home to the first underwater museum in the country; the Underwater Museum of Art.

Wondering how that works?

There are seven unique sculptures placed 60 feet under the water, each one designed to help reef fish flourish. If you’re a certified diver, you can dive down and explore these sculptures close-up, while snorkelers can take a look at them from above.

Technically, Hanalei Bay is made up of a few different beach parks, all joining together to create a two-mile stretch of gorgeous beach. With a magnificent mountain range as a backdrop, Hanalei Bay looks stunning no matter where you’re standing.

Visit in the winter when the waves are larger for surfing, or in the summer if you prefer tranquil water for swimming. There are several other activities on offer here too, such as:

St. Thomas is known for its beautiful beaches, and while some of them may regularly be flanked by tourists, Lindquist Beach is a little lesser-known. It sits within the protected Smith Bay Park, which sprawls out for 21 acres and provides a lush backdrop that has earned this beach a prime spot in many television commercials.

This is a great beach for swimming – if you head to the west end, you’ll find a small bay where the water is even more shallow. Diving and snorkeling are great here as well, with the water being so rich in marine life. Simply relaxing on the sand is always a delight too, and you’ll notice that, when the sun is shining from a certain angle, the beach glimmers with a hint of pink.

There are only a few facilities here, which is why the beach still has such a laid-back ambience. In between the sea grape trees and the coconut grove are a couple of cabins that can be rented for parties, along with bathrooms and picnic tables.

Once you’ve had your fill of the beach, head into the heart of St. Thomas to indulge in some retail therapy. Be sure to stop off at the OROGOLD Virgin Islands Store – your skin will love a VIP facial after all of that time in the sun!

With its white sand and sparkling waves, Topsail Beach is a photographer’s dream. For those seeking wildlife, there are several sites along the beach designed to encourage sea turtle breeding, allowing their dwindling population to flourish once again.

There are so many activities to try here, including:

  • Boat tours
  • Nature and wildlife tours

There are so many different stretches of sandy coastline to choose from in Virginia Beach, but most visitors tend to flock to those closest to the boardwalk. Sandbridge Beach tends to be lesser-known, meaning that you won’t have to deal with crowds. The waves here are also much calmer, making it a great beach for swimming.

This is quite a secluded beach, making it a great one for relaxing and unwinding. For those seeking a more rugged adventure, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the False Cape State Park are only a short distance away.

Don’t worry about this beach being too far out of town either – it’s just a few miles away from downtown Virginia Beach, meaning a short drive. Once you head back into town, pop into the OROGOLD Lynnhaven Mall store to treat your skin to a relaxing facial. You will also be able to enjoy product demonstrations and customized skin consultations.

The coastal area of Kennebunk itself is such an Instagrammable destination, but your camera won’t stop clicking once you reach Gooch’s Beach. Yes, there are two other gorgeous beaches to choose from (Middle Beach and Mother’s Beach) that make up this trio, but Gooch’s Beach is the largest and is home to some of the sandiest stretches of coastline.

The lifeguards on duty here make this a great beach for swimming, and the summer months see surfers flock to the shore. If you enjoy a spot of fishing, the Kennebunk River is where you will find plenty of bass.

Keep in mind that Gooch’s Beach is only 0.6 miles long, so it can get pretty crowded during peak tourist season.

Looking to camp out on our beach this summer? ⛺️ Here's what you need to know: •There is no fee or permit to camp at or visit Follett's Island. •There are no designated camping spots to reserve. •Through September, portable toilet units are available for use along beach access points one and two. •Do not bring glass of any kind. •Dispose of your trash properly. •The state-protected sand dune areas are off-limits. •No person shall camp on any public beach for a period greater than 14 consecutive days. Texas is home to over 400 miles of coastline, meaning that there are plenty of Instagrammable beaches to be found in the Lone Star state. However, one of the best is Surfside Beach, often referred to simply as Surfside, which is less than an hour’s drive from Houston. Located in Brazoria County, Surfside Beach is known for being one of the cleanest in the area, even though it attracts large numbers of visitors.

As you can tell from its name, Surfside Beach is a hit with surfers. Its waves are consistent and are recognized as being some of the best in the state. There are also several surf shops within walking distance of the beach – perfect for picking up any surf gear you’ve forgotten to pack.

Since the beach is located so near to the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, the beach itself has become a paradise for many wildlife species. In fact, more than 200 species of birds have been seen here, with different ones visiting each season.

If you get hungry, there are a number of local restaurants to choose from a short walk away from the beach. Here are a few of the best:

  • Jetty Shack is one of the oldest restaurants here, with juicy burgers and ice cold beer
  • Red Snapper Inn is famous for its fresh seafood
  • La Taqueria de Surfside serves up street tacos, and sits just behind Surfin’ Rita’s Daiquiris To Go – the perfect combination
  • Hammond’s Shaved Ice & Grill is another street food venue with barbecue brisket sandwiches, chopped brisket tacos, and icy cold treats that are so refreshing on a hot day

Singing Beach, Massachusetts

View this post on Instagram

Singing Beach, Massachusetts While some people may make the trip to Manchester-by-the-Sea to see where the movie was filmed, others come for the more curious Singing Beach: If you shuffle your feet in the dry sand you will hear a sing-song-like squeak. It’s wildly popular with families in summer, but from mid-October to mid-April, expect to hear more barking than singing, as it’s the beach’s official dog-friendly season.

A post shared by Lizzy Hunter (@6figuregrandma) on Jul 30, 2020 at 12:34am PDT

This 0.5 mile long Massachusetts beach, which can be found in Manchester-by-the-Sea, has quite an unusual name.

Want to know the story behind it?

If you shuffle your feet along the dry sand, you’ll hear it make a sing-song-sounding squeak.

This beautiful sandy beach is one of the most popular on the North Shore, but still remains so tranquil and serene. The soft white sand here is perfect for a leisurely stroll, especially if you time your visit for around sunset. If you’d like to get a bit more active, try your hand at some snorkeling or tube floating.

There are a few facilities here, including a snack bar with delicious icy treats on hot days, showers, and changing areas.

The USA is home to some incredible beaches, with every coastal state having at least one that they can be truly proud of. No matter where on the coastline you are, you’re never too far away from a picturesque beach that is more than deserving of an Instagram post!

Rooms with a View: 7 Hotels You Need to Stay At

Igloo hotel

A breathtaking view is always a huge bonus when staying at a hotel, but there are some hotels out there that go above and beyond when it comes to the views that they offer. From sharks swimming below your glass-bottomed floor to city skylines laid out in front of you, here are seven hotels with some of the best views in the world.

The Ritz-Carlton, Millennia Singapore – Singapore

A post shared by Unique Hotels & Resorts (@uniquehotels) on Jan 30, 2018 at 3:22am PST

If you want to treat yourself to the life of luxury, you won’t ever go wrong with the Ritz-Carlton. This five star hotel is located in the buzzing Marina Bay district of Singapore, with rooms offering sweeping, panoramic views of this vibrant area.

Every guest room, along with their marble bathrooms, boast this incredible view, with the decadently inviting tubs encouraging guests to sit back, relax, and soak up their surroundings.

What Else Does the Hotel Offer?

In addition to the view, this hotel has so much more on offer, including:

  • A five star spa with special, signature treatments
  • A 4200-piece art collection, with many pieces from world-renowned artists, including Andy Warhol
  • A Michelin-starred restaurant
  • A large outdoor pool with sun loungers and private cabanas

What’s There to Do Nearby?

Singapore isn’t big, and the location of this hotel makes it the perfect base from where you can explore the entire island. However, if you don’t want to venture too far, there is also plenty to do in the Marina Bay area.

Gardens by the Bay is a must-see, cutting-edge botanical garden, while the Merlion is a national icon. The Singapore Flyer, along with the Marina Bay Sands Skypark, will reward you with even more aerial views of the city.

Of course, the luxury stores in this area can’t be ignored either. You will find some of the best brands in the world here, including an OROGOLD store in the Marina Bay Sands mall, where you can enjoy product demonstrations and VIP facials.

The Outpost, Kruger National Park – South Africa

View this post on Instagram

Wake up to this view.

A post shared by The Outpost Lodge (@theoutpostlodge) on Dec 15, 2019 at 11:27pm PST

Let’s face it – even on its own, the Kruger National Park is absolutely amazing. However, throw in a five star luxury lodge and you’ve got the recipe for a truly unforgettable vacation.

This hotel takes the open-plan concept to the next level – guest rooms don’t have any windows, giving you seamless views out over the wild African bush. With the hotel having just 12 suites, it never gets too busy, enabling you to enjoy the landscape uninterrupted.

What Else Does the Hotel Offer?

The international restaurant here serves up quality meals, but you can also request for a table to be set up for you somewhere else within the hotel’s grounds, meaning that you can enjoy personalized views with every meal.

The hotel also has a beautiful pool, and makes use of eco-friendly products.

Guests can go out on two game drives a day, giving them the chance to see the Big Five, along with Africa’s other legendary wildlife.

What’s There to Do Nearby?

The Outpost is in an area of total wilderness. In fact, this area used to be completely inaccessible to visitors, meaning that there isn’t too much else to do nearby. The nearest town, Louis Trichardt, is a three hour car journey away.

However, the lack of nearby activities is exactly what makes this hotel so appealing. For those who want to take some time out from their busy lives (and this is exactly what will happen, since WiFi here can be shaky), and simply make the most of what the natural world has to offer, this is the perfect spot to visit.

New York is another city famous for its views, and the windows in the rooms of the Arlo NoMad frame these panoramas beautifully. This boutique hotel offers views of both downtown and uptown Manhattan, placing you in the heart of all of the hustle and bustle but in your own private bubble.

What Else Does the Hotel Offer?

What’s There to Do Nearby?

Being located just north of Madison Square, the Arlo NoMad is just a four minute walk away from the famous Empire State Building, making this the first point of call for visitors.

Once you have fully explored this landmark, start making your way around the rest of New York. Some of the city’s most famous attractions include:

  • Central Park
  • The Statue of Liberty
  • Times Square
  • The Museum of Modern Art
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • Broadway
  • Ground Zero

If you are feeling overwhelmed with all of your many options, book yourself in for a city tour. The great thing about these is that you can choose a tour oriented towards your own personal interests. For example, if you love to eat, pick a food and culture tour. Alternatively, if you want to see as much of the city in as little time possible, pick a full or half day landmark tour.

While hotels around the world are now starting to open up again now that the worst of the Coronavirus pandemic seems to have passed, social distancing is still in place in most regions. So, while you may be ready to book your next vacation, it never hurts to choose a room with a view that makes you want to stay in.

Where to Find the Best Pho in Hanoi

Bowl of pho

Pho has been in the spotlight quite a bit in recent years, and that’s no bad thing! This has meant that people all over the world have been trying this much-loved Vietnamese classic, quickly joining the dish’s ever-devoted long line of fans. If you’re ready to taste some of the most authentic pho out there, here are the X places in Hanoi to head to.

What is Pho?

If you’re still new to the world of pho, here’s a quick explanation…

Pho, which is pronounced “fuh”, is a Vietnamese rice noodle soup with a slow-cooked, crystal clear broth that is then topped with a colorful array of garnishes. Other condiments are then layered over this, giving you so much texture and flavor with every bite.

Many travel to Vietnam primarily for the purpose of savoring an authentic bowl of pho, with Hanoi being famous for this specialty.

Where about in Hanoi should you go to find the best pho?

Taste your way through this list:

Pho Thin

Located on a tree-lined street in the historic French Quarter district of the city, Pho Thin is mainly frequented by locals, who have no doubts that this is where they can find some of the best pho in town.

A post shared by 조미정유사나 (@midaeng80) on Jul 2, 2020 at 3:59am PDT

Everyone has their own way of making pho, adding in a unique ingredient to give it their own personal twist. Instead of tinkering with the ingredients, Pho Thin prepares their meat in a slightly different way – it is stir fried with garlic before it’s added into the broth, rather than being added in raw. This might not seem like much, but it completely changes the overall flavor of the dish, making it unlike any other pho you’ll taste in Vietnam.

The garlic adds a deep smokiness and caramelization that lingers on the tongue after each bite. Guests also have the option of customizing their pho even more, with ingredients such as:

  • Lime
  • House-made hot sauce
  • Pickled chillis
  • Quay (fried dough sticks to soak up the broth)

Madame Hien

Situated in a 19th century French villa that has been restored to perfection, Madame Hien was created by Vietnam’s most revered French chef; Didier Corlou. Elevated versions of authentic Vietnamese street food is what you’ll find on the menu here, celebrating Vietnamese culture in such a delicious way.

In addition to a classic beef pho, which they make with wagyu beef, Madame Hien also experiments with a few other one-of-a-kind flavors, ensuring that the pho you eat here is one you will never forget.

The foie gras and lemongrass pho is a popular option, and the Scottish salmon pho is also said to be delectable. If you want a little bit of everything, you can opt for a pho with beef, prawns, squid, and seven vegetables, or go for one that has been flavored with celery leaf.

Pho Gia Truyen

Pho Gia Truyen truly is Vietnamese street food at its best. You may need to use a translation app to help you order your food, but the pho you will be rewarded with makes the extra effort more than worthwhile.

Pho Tai Nam (50k; $3sgd) ⭐️ 4.5/5 ⭐️ 🍴Serving only one dish, this speciality #beefpho restaurant is highly popular with a constant crowd during its opening hours of 6am-9am/ 5pm-10pm (closes once it runs out). Voted one of the #bestpho in Hanoi, we had high expectations and won’t disappointed. While the soup wasn’t the tastiest around (maybe cause we were there right at opening and the flavours of the meat hadn’t set in), it was light and refreshing. For a very affordable $3, there was generous amounts of tasty beef of various cuts, making it highly satisfying. 📍Pho Gia Truyen Bat Dan, 49 Bat Dan, Cua Dong, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi, Vietnam #cafehoppingkidshanoi #cafehoppingkidsvietnam #hanoioldquarter

With its simple table and plastic stools, Pho Gia Truyen may not initially look like much, but wait until you taste their pho. The only item on this restaurant’s menu is beef pho, and they really know what they’re doing when it comes to this.

A variety of beef cuts are used in this pho, with the meat always perfectly tender and still blushing pink in the middle. The clear and flavorful broth complements this beautifully.

After your meal, treat yourself to a stroll around the neighborhood, where you will come across the OROGOLD Hanoi store. Stop by for a VIP facial, free product demonstrations, and expert skin care advice.

Duong’s Restaurant

Constantly voted as one of the top restaurants in the city, Duong’s Restaurant is run by Hoang Duong, whose culinary skills have been showcased on Iron Chef Vietnam and Top Chef Vietnam. Classic Vietnamese cuisine is the focus here, and although the menu regularly changes with the seasons, pho is a dish that is always served up.

The pho that you will find at Duong’s Restaurant features quite traditional flavors, but you have the choice of chicken or seafood, in addition to classic beef. Served with herbs, hot sauce, fresh lime and fresh chilli, this is definitely a flavorful soup.

However, there is no denying that the fine dining element holds some appeal too…

While many of the best phos in the city are served up at small street joints who only specialize in that one dish, Duong’s offers up a variety of different appetizers, sides, and mains that you can enjoy with your pho.

Some of the restaurant’s other must-try dishes include:

  • Char-grilled sugarcane pork
  • Banana flower salad
  • Traditional grilled fish
  • Grilled eggplant with spring onion sauce
  • Black sticky rice in coconut milk

Pho Suong

Thanks to its increasing popularity, Pho Suong was able to open a second location in Hanoi, and both serve up the most delicious pho. Although this may not be a large restaurant, huge numbers of visitors flock here daily, so be prepared to queue.

The pho here is simple yet flavorful, and there are usually around four to six options on the daily menu board to choose from. They all consist of beef pho, but make use of a variety of cuts and cooking techniques, from half-done brisket to well-done flank.

Condiments are provided on every table, enabling you to spice up your pho to your liking.

Pho 10

Originally Pho 10 Ly Quoc Sur, this restaurant became so popular that it opened up two other locations in the city, and is now fondly referred to simply as Pho 10. Service here is fast, so don’t expect to lounge around after your meal.

A post shared by Sharon😍Food (@sharonlovefood) on Feb 28, 2020 at 7:00am PST

Everything is always cooked exquisitely at Pho 10 – there’s never anything that could be done any better. However, what makes the pho here even more special is the fact that there are six different types of beef pho that you can choose from, each one prepared in a different way.

You should also try ordering an egg with your pho – this will be served in a small bowl of broth, which lightly cooks the egg as it steams. The rich, runny yolk really adds something extra-special to the flavor of the pho.

As an added bonus, the chefs at this restaurant prepare the meals behind glass doors, meaning that you can watch the pho-cooking process take place.

While many of the pho restaurants on this list are only open in the evenings, Pho 10 opens at 6am. This may seem unusually early to some, but pho is a popular breakfast food in Vietnam, so expect to see crowds here early in the morning.

Pho Chay

If you don’t eat meat, then you’re probably feeling a little left out at this point. After all, many of the more traditional pho eateries in Vietnam only serve up beef versions of their famous noodle soup, leaving vegans and vegetarians watching on hungrily.

Don’t worry, head to Pho Chay instead.

“Chay” means vegetarian in English, and vegan pho is exactly what this street-side cafe specializes in. Although it doesn’t contain actual beef, the traditional pho here tastes wonderfully authentic, while their “special” pho, which contains faux chicken and plenty of mushrooms, is equally popular.

Their dry pho is worth tasting too, featuring tofu prepared in different ways and flavorful chunks of seitan.

While you’re here, make the most of the other vegan Vietnamese delights on offer – the fried spring rolls always get incredible reviews.

Pho Bat Dan

While some of the newer pho restaurants in Hanoi have been experimenting with different ingredients and cooking techniques, Pho Bat Dan is all about keeping things traditional.

This restaurant is famous for queuing culture, something that was popular with local restaurants back in the 80’s – being a self-service restaurant, you need to queue to order your food and then take it to your table yourself. This means that you would be best off visiting Pho Bat Dan with another person, so that one of you can reserve a table while the other orders.

If you want to try a super-traditional version of Vietnamese pho, then this is where to go. The bones for the broth here are stewed for hours, giving the broth a deep sweetness that many other restaurants aren’t able to achieve.

The beef is also deliciously tender, melting away in your mouth with each bite.

Pho Ga Cham

More and more restaurants are now cooking up their own version of chicken pho, but pretty much all pho-lovers would agree that the best bowl to be found is at Pho Ga Cham.

The ingredients used in this chicken pho are always of the highest quality, and this is something that you can definitely taste in the soup. Each serving is extremely generous, containing at least five large pieces of chicken.

Also included in each bowl are meatballs and plenty of spring onions, but you can also add on a few extras to make your bowl extra-special, such as eggs or fried dough sticks.

Don’t be put off by the price here either – yes, it may seem to be double that of other pho restaurants, but you really are paying for what you get here!

Pho Cuon Huong Mai

Here’s something a little different for you – pho cuon. The word “pho” actually refers to the noodles, while “cuon” means roll, with the dish pho cuon basically being pho rolls. You will find this dish all over the city, but Pho Cuon Huong Mai is known for serving up the best.

This isn’t technically pho. Instead, the rice batter that is normally used to make noodles is instead rolled up like a spring roll. It is filled with beef and a variety of different herbs, the same that you would top a bowl of pho with, giving you all of those traditional pho flavors but with a completely different texture.

Once you have tried your first authentic bowl of pho, you’ll easily be able to understand why this has become one of Vietnam’s most popular dishes, as well as why it has really taken off all over the world. These bowls of noodle soup may seem quite simple, but the flavors in each one are deep and complex, leaving you always wanting more!
