Abu Dhabi Overview

Abu Dhabi Skyline at night.

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is the perfect example of a modern gulf city. Having evolved from a fishing village into a luxurious metropolis with glittering skyscrapers, massive malls, luxury hotels and gourmet restaurants, it is now the destination for travellers who prefer somewhere slightly more laid-back and cultural than Dubai.

There are plenty of exciting attractions in Dubai, from the engineering spectacle of Capital Gate, the farthest leaning building in the world, to Ferrari World, with the fastest rollercoaster on the planet. Yas Waterworld is a summer favorite, with 43 different water rides, slides and attractions, while the Arabian Wildlife Park, where over 10,000 animals roam, offers some great activities, including a safari tour.

Abu Dhabi is frequently compared with Dubai, and one of the areas where it comes out on top is its strong sense of culture and history. The Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque is one of the largest in the world, and offers complimentary tours every day. OROGOLD recommends that both women and men dress modestly when visiting religious sites, although suitable clothing is usually provided at the entrance to a mosque. For a look at Abu Dhabi’s heritage, head over to the Heritage Village, which will take you back to a time before oil influenced the way of life, complete with a replicated traditional Bedouin camp, and all of its many distinct features. The Qasr Al Hosn, otherwise known as the White Fort, is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi, dating back to 1793, and its spectacular exterior is definitely worth a visit.

There are plenty of other activities that you can enjoy in Abu Dhabi. From zooming across the sand dunes in the vast desert on quad bikes, to kayaking through winding mangroves, to island hopping cruises and fishing trips. Those that have always wanted to give wakeboarding a try will appreciate the calm waters along the coastline, and there is even a cable park, where riders hold onto a cable attached to a pulley system, skimming the water smoothly, hitting ramps and obstacles when they are more skilled. For something more relaxed, head to the Corniche, a gorgeous boulevard that snakes its way along the coastline. Breakwater Point offers some great views of the city, and there are many entertainment venues and restaurants to keep you occupied along the way, as well as bikes and pedal cars for hire.

When it comes to dining options, there are an overwhelming number of choices, from international gourmet restaurants to casual local eateries. The local cuisine is a mix of Asian and Middle Eastern influences, with many dishes featuring meat, mutton and lamb in particular. Dishes, like the culture, are intensely spiced and always vibrant, and travellers yearn for the smells and sensory delights of Emirati cuisine long after returning home.

Although it may not be as sophisticated a city as Dubai, Abu Dhabi more than makes up for this with its vibrant local culture, welcoming hospitality, and bountiful attractions. Whether you are visiting the city for a weekend or a month, you are definitely in for a treat.

The OROGOLD Al Wahda Mall Store
Al Wahda Mall, located within the heart of the city of Abu Dhabi, is a premier retail destination attracting over 30 million visitors each year. The mall, operating since 2007, is home to more than 350 local and well-known foreign brands spanning across an area of total size of 3.3 million square feet. Offering a good balance of retail shops ranging from fashion to electronics to cosmetics and with Lulu Hypermarket taking the helm as the anchor store, Al Wahda Mall has it all (and complete with a cinema too!).

For four consecutive years from 2010 to 2013, Al Wahda Mall has been the recipient of the “Best Shopping Mall in Abu Dhabi” Award and was also awarded numerous Gold and Silver Awards by the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) and the Middle East Council for Shopping Centre (MECSC) respectively. The mall recently made headlines when it became the first shopping mall in Abu Dhabi to allocate more than 80 parking bays designated solely for women shoppers, with the intention of making it more convenient for them to park and shop. With such a consumer-driven focus, it’s no wonder Al Wahda Mall is among the top picks for shopping malls in Abu Dhabi city.
