With over 3.5 million people spread across 5.5 square miles, Connecticut is one of the most densely populated states in the United States. The state shares its borders with Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island, enjoying a mild, humid climate, particularly in the southern cities. Some of the first settlers in Connecticut were Dutch fur traders, followed by the English Puritans from Massachusetts. Perhaps a legacy from the Pequot War in 1636, this southern state has continued to play a significant role in war efforts, most notably providing supplies for Union troops during the American Civil War in the 19th century, and producing weaponry for both World Wars in the 20th century.
Economically, Connecticut is now driven primarily by the service sector, of which finance and insurance constitute the largest industries, though the manufacturing sector doesn’t lag too far behind. This state is home to Sikorsky Aircraft, the helicopter-producing subsidiary of Lockheed Martin; General Dynamics, the submarine-making division of Electric Boat; and Pratt & Whitney, the jet engine manufacturer.
Connecticut is particularly proud of its sports scene, having hosted the Travelers Championship since 1952. It has a 1.5-mile road racing course in Lime Rock Park, which has previously featured racers the likes of Mario Andretti, Stirling Moss, and Dan Gurney. Notable citizens from this state include the Carpenter siblings, brother-and-sister band who shot to fame in the 80s; Charles Dow, founder of finance and investment firm Dow Jones; and Meryl Streep, 20-time Academy Award nominee and winner of 8 Golden Globes.
