Puerto Rico Overview

San Juan Overview
San Juan was established in the year 1521. It is the second-oldest European settlement in the Americas. The San Juan Old Town was actually inaugurated a century before Europeans set foot in Massachusetts. It is now famous as a historic wonderland that boasts of a pulsating energy, exciting sights and an amazing lifestyle. San Juan might attract visitors with its colonial era artifacts, 20th century art-deco architecture and natural beauty, but it also boasts of continually evolving neighborhoods that promises visitors with some of the best and most authentic Puerto Rican experiences.

San Juan is actually a collection of beautiful neighborhoods that have their own culture and identity. One of the top neighborhoods in the city is Santurce, a raw fusion of magnificent restaurants, exciting nightlife, a fantastic bar scene and beautiful galleries. The Isla Verde area is where you can find most of the popular luxury resorts and casinos of San Juan. Old San Juan is the oldest neighborhood in the region and arguably the most popular neighborhood as well. It is an ideal place to experience the island’s history and culture and is home to iconic attractions like the Fort San Felipe del Morro and the San Juan lighthouse. The best way to explore Old San Juan is on foot. The beautiful cobblestone streets unfold unique museums, cafes, restaurants, galleries and shops at every step and the beautiful buildings with their French balconies are also worth a watch. Stop for some pina colada at one of the open-air cafes and watch the locals as they go about their everyday life.

Once you get over the historic and cosmopolitan charm of the area, San Juan offers a wide assortment of silky sand beaches. The city’s northern edge is home to some of the most exclusive resorts in the world and the swanky Condado area is also located here. It is entirely possible to be splashing in the beautiful waters of San Juan 60 minutes after arriving at the international airport. Another thing that makes the city unique is that it doesn’t make you choose between a cultural capital and a typical Caribbean beach paradise. It simply has both on offer!

The San Juan weather is another highlight. San Juan enjoys a tropical weather where the summer highs average close to the 90s while the winters average in the low 80s. The summer months can be quite humid and the outdoors become very hot in the afternoon. The period of April – November experiences frequent thunderstorms and rain. The ideal time to visit the city is between the months of December – March.

San Juan is also close to one of the most popular destinations in Puerto Rico – the Vieques Island. Visitors can travel to this rare island by boat. It is the place that is home to those enchanting bioluminescent bays where the waters seem to radiate with light once the sun goes down. Adventures like snorkelling, scuba diving, kitesurfing and windsurfing are also found here.
