Virgin Islands Overview

Island of St. John, US Virigin IslandsThe Virgin Islands are made up of over 120 different islands and islets, some of which are US owned and some of which are British. Either way, the currency is US dollars, and being just a 2 hour flight from Miami, it is an amazing destination to get a taste of Caribbean culture without having to travel too far.

St. Thomas
The main draws of this island, which is the busiest of the Virgin Islands, are its gorgeous beaches alongside great shopping areas and array of water sport opportunities. The Virgin Islands is one of the only places in the world to offer duty-free shopping on any goods that an individual purchases, so it is a great place to hit the designer stores. The choice of water sports on offer seem almost endless, with a long list including kite boarding, para-sailing, windsurfing, scuba diving and much more. If you want to explore the bottom of the ocean but are not confident with your diving skills, give sea-trekking a try. All you do is put on a large helmet equipped with breathing equipment, climb down a ladder and follow a trail under the sea, all the while breathing like normal.

St. Croix
Although other islands contain examples of the Danish Colonial style of architecture, St. Croix, the largest of the Virgin Islands, is the best place to admire it. To learn more about this period, there are museums you can visit, as well as many Colonial churches and other buildings that you can explore. St. Croix also has some great diving opportunities, enabling you to take a diving trip through aquamarine water to explore sunken ships. For more unique water sports, the moonlight kayak trip is not to be missed. You will be taken out on a kayak under the stars, and will be shown the very place that Columbus first experienced the ‘New World’.

St. John
St. John, the island known for its laid-back and low-key vibe, is also an island that is definitely worth visiting. It is one of the best islands to get a taste of true Caribbean culture, from the local cuisine to the open-air jazz bars. The indigenous Caribbean cuisine is not to be missed here, with many restaurants serving up Creole-inspired seafood and jerk dishes, alongside cooling tropical cocktails. St. John is also a great island for shopping, although you won’t find the brand names here that you would on St. Thomas. Instead, there are a great range of local craft stores, many which allow you to watch the artists at work, and it is a great place to pick up a local handmade souvenir. St. John also has some great luxury resorts, and if you take an early morning walk on the beach, you will find that you are the only person amongst stretches of pearly sand and endless crystal sea.

All of the Virgin Islands have something unique to offer, and if you don’t want to miss out on one, have a look at some of the island-hopping tours that you can take, even just as a day trip. With some of the best beaches in the world, a rich and vibrant history and culture, and our very own OROGOLD store, the Virgin Islands are the perfect place to visit, whether for a short break or a longer stay.
