Virginia Beach

← Back to the Portfolio

Virginia Beach side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Dating back to the late 18th Century, Virginia Beach is a major tourist destination in the state of Virginia, and is the largest city in the state. The main attraction of Virginia Beach is the gorgeous beach itself, which is famous for being the longest pleasure beach in the world, and was recently widened as part of a multi-million dollar scheme, as well as the 3 mile Boardwalk on the ocean front, which is lined with plenty of vibrant restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Those wishing to have a go at some watersports, such as surfing or scuba diving, should head to one of the many equipment rental companies on the Boardwalk.

Golf is also an extremely popular sport at Virginia Beach, with more than 10 gold courses in the city. The Princess Anne Country Club has one of the oldest golf courses in Virginia, but the only downside is that it is a private club. For clubs that open their courses to public, head to TPC of Virginia Beach, Owl’s Creek Family Golf Center, Honey Bee Golf Club or Heron’s Ridge, which is known for its fantastic native flora and fauna.

Although the beach is great for some down time, Virginia Beach has also developed quite the range of cultural attractions. From the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Museum, which is great for kids as many of the displays are hands-on, to the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, there is plenty to see for those who like visiting museums and galleries. To learn more about the marine influences that have shaped the city, pay a visit to The Old Coast Guard Station, which documents the important role that the building has played in the history of the region, and also displays many interesting shipwreck and rescue accounts.

The First Landing State Park, which protects the site of which the Europeans first landed on the US coast, offers 19 miles of trails for hiking, cycling and jogging, as well as a boat ramp and picnic areas. Within the park, you will find the Chesapeake Bay Center, providing interesting information on local marine life, as well as history and heritage. For those who want the chance to spot some native wildlife, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a must-see. One of the most important wilderness reserves on the Atlantic Coast, the refuge supports a wide variety of bird species, as well as other wildlife attractions, with the most popular animals to see being the loggerhead turtles and American bald eagles.

Virginia Beach’s great location also means that it is an ideal base from which you can make day trips to other cities. From visiting the 50 acre Chesapeake Arboretum in Chesapeake, just 25 miles away, to taking a tour of the largest naval base in the world in Norfolk, to photographing the phenomenal natural beauty at the Shenandoah National Park, no matter what your interests may be, Virginia Beach and its surrounding areas will not let you down.
