The Madrid Zoo and Aquarium

Madrid Zoo and Aquarium in Spain

MesquitaFMS / Shutterstock.com

Located in the Casa de Campo, the Madrid Zoo and Aquarium first opened its doors in 1770, and is currently one of the largest zoos in Spain. Sprawled out at just under 50 acres, this zoo boasts a wide range of different animals and exhibits, making it one of the city’s most popular attractions.

The Zoo Animals
The Madrid Zoo is one of the only zoos in the world to house giant pandas, making this a highlight of the visit for many. The zoo is part of a giant panda conservation program, giving you a unique opportunity to see these gentle, peaceful creatures up close. Other mammals within the zoo range from lions and tigers to giraffes and koalas, and, unlike many zoos that use cages to house their animals, the Madrid Zoo makes use of wide moats, to enable the animals to experience more of a natural habitat.

The Aquarium Animals
With a huge salt water aquarium, the Madrid Zoo and Aquarium is able to showcase quite the variety of sea creatures. The aquarium opened in 1995, and was the first marine tropical aquarium in Spain, earning it quite the reputation. From the bull shark to the sandbar shark to different sea turtle species, you are bound to see so many animals that you have never seen before here, and, thanks to the Shark Tunnel, these can be seen from such a close distance. You will also be able to explore the dolphinarium, which was built in 1987 and is home to nine bottlenose dolphins.

Shows and Exhibitions
The Madrid Zoo and Aquarium has an action-packed schedule of shows and exhibitions that visitors can watch, and these will enable them to appreciate these animals from a new perspective. The dolphin show is one that showcases the incredible skills and abilities that dolphins have when it comes to learning, while the sea lion show is another one that will have you marveling at the intelligence of these sea creatures. The free flight exotic bird show is also not to be missed, and neither is the birds of prey show, which is another free flight one.

Restaurants and Cafés
With so much to see and do at the Madrid Zoo and Aquarium, visitors tend to feel quite hungry during the day. Fortunately, there are several restaurants and cafés to choose from, and these are located all over the grounds of the zoo, meaning that you are never too far away from a bite to eat. Whether you opt for the African inspired Restaurant Kibanda or the seasonal dishes at Restaurant Bagaray, the eateries at the zoo will definitely not disappoint.

The Madrid Zoo and Aquarium is open throughout the year, although certain shows and exhibitions only take place on specific days, making it worth checking out their website in advance if there is a particular one that you are hoping to catch. This is a zoo that really strives to educate the public on animals, and the importance of conservation, making it a great place to visit with the entire family.

Taiwan’s National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium

Overview of The National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium in Taiwan

weniliou / Shutterstock.com

The National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium can be found near Kenting, on Taiwan’s southern coast, and first opened its doors in 2000. With three main exhibits, as well as the largest underwater tunnel in Asia, and many other research and educational facilities, it is no surprise that this museum has frequently been voted as one of the best of its kind in Asia.

Waters of Taiwan
Waters of Taiwan is likely to be the first of the three main exhibits that you visit, and is where you will find aquatic animals that are native to the country. Each exhibit within this hall is themed after one of the water systems in Taiwan, such as the reservoir, the river and the open sea, featuring animals including the Japanese eel, tilapia, nurse sharks and spotted eagle rays. This is also where you will find the museum’s touch pool, where you will be able to touch the creatures within.

Coral Kingdom
As you would imagine from its name, Coral Kingdom showcases the world of coral reefs, displaying the way in which they differ when it comes to shallow waters and deep oceans. This exhibit is truly educational, explaining how varying factors within the environment, from water pressure to light, can affect a coral reef. This is also where you will find the underwater tunnel, which is the largest in Asia, and gives you the opportunity to see Moray eels, butterflyfish, cownose rays, and so much more, from such an incredible perspective.

Waters of the World
The Waters of the World exhibits takes a look at the different bodies of water that can be found all over the planet. It begins by explaining how oceans are formed, before focussing in on specific seas, from ancient oceans to the deep sea to polar seas to kelp forests.

Temporary Exhibitions
NMMBA hosts a number of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, and there are currently a few on that are worth checking out. The Exploration of Dr. Shark depicts the dangers that sharks face due to over-hunting, helping people to understand these creatures better, while The Secrets of Transparent Fish features exquisite specimens of fish that will no doubt impress.

Special Activities
In addition to exploring the three main halls within the museum, as well as the temporary exhibitions, there are several special activities that are held throughout the week, many on a daily basis, that enables you to learn more about marine animals first-hand. The seal feeding show, as well as the puffin feeding show, is always a popular one, so be sure to get there early, while the Waters of the World Penguin Feeding Show is definitely not to be missed. The Open Ocean Tank Fish Feeding Show is always quite a frenzy, as is the Underwater Tunnel Reef Fish Feeding Show, which you watch from the Underwater Tunnel in the Coral Kingdom.

The National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium offers up so much, not only in terms of animals that you can view, but also educationally too. From their informative exhibits to their talks and special activities, this is a museum that the whole family will be able to enjoy together.

Get Your Kitty Fix in Lanai City, Hawaii

Cat lying on a grassy ground

The Hawaiian island of Lanai is home to a number of different one-of-a-kind attractions, but there is an unusual one that has been attracting a record number of visitors. Situated within a 25,000 square foot property, the Lanai Cat Sanctuary is home to 500 rescued cats, and is open to visitors for a few hours each day.

The Lanai Cat Sanctuary
The Lanai Cat Sanctuary is a unique one, because not only is it located on one of the most remote islands in the United States, but it also has no electricity, meaning that those who run it need to be quite innovative in their methods of raising these cats. It opened in 2008, with 425 cats at the time who were calling it home. The sanctuary boasts everything that a cat could desire, from large huts and trees to climb on to patches of lush grass where they can lay out and enjoy the sun. There are absolutely no cages or barriers within the sanctuary, leaving the cats free to roam around and make the most of the incredible space that they live in.

Rehabilitation and Neutering
One of the major issues that the wild birds of Hawaii face are the many feral cats that roam the islands and these cats have had quite the detrimental impact on native bird populations over the years. The sanctuary practices a neuter and release program, whereby each cat that they take in is neutered, as this will help to prevent Hawaii’s feline population from continuing to grow at uncontrollable rates. The sanctuary also traps and rehabilitates feral cats, while providing ongoing medical care to those who need it, and socializing those who have lived on their own their whole lives.

Cat looking at woman carrying her

Visiting the Lanai Cat Sanctuary
The Lanai Cat Sanctuary attracts a few thousand visitors each year, some of whom travel the world just to visit this incredible place. The sanctuary is located just a mile from Lana’i Airport, making it easy and convenient to access. Open daily from 10am to 3pm, visitors are able to play and interact with the cats, which helps the cats to become accustomed to human contact. Visitors can also spend time brushing the cats, and are allowed to bring in treats and toys when they visit.

Adopting or Fostering a Cat from the Sanctuary
As you would imagine, many visitors to the sanctuary end up falling in love with a cat, but each cat that is here is able to be fostered or adopted, so many visitors end up taking one home with them. The sanctuary arranges for air travel for the cats, and, each year, around 30 cats are adopted by visitors to the sanctuary, making room for more feral cats to be taken in. For those who would like to support the sanctuary but are not able to adopt a cat themselves, the sanctuary offers an adopt-in-place program for a monthly fee, with the money raised going towards the running costs of the sanctuary, as well as the never-ending medical bills that are accumulated.

While there are numerous animal sanctuaries to be found all over the world, there are none that are quite like the Lanai Cat Sanctuary. Rather than seeing unhappy animals cooped up in cages, this is a sanctuary that really allows the cats to be themselves, and for those who do not end up being adopted, they are still able to spend their lives living in happiness on one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

Say Hello to These Animals in Singapore

While Singapore may have a land mass of just 707 square kilometres, the island is home to an incredibly diverse range of animals. From free-ranging orang utans to giant pandas, here are just a few of the animals that you can say hello to in Singapore.

Orang utans

Orang Utans
The Singapore Zoo is home to two species of orang utan, both of which live together in the free-ranging orang utan exhibit. This zoo was the first in the world to put together a concept such as this for orang utans, and it has worked extremely well. With two free-ranging areas, a boardwalk, an island and thick vegetation, there is plenty of space for the animals to play and frolic, as well as viewing stations for visitors to get up close to these magnificent creatures. You will also see a number of behaviour enrichment devices scattered throughout the area, and these are there to ensure that the orang utans are able to be both physically and mentally stimulated each and every day.

Leopards
Leopards are no doubt majestic creatures, and these can be viewed at Singapore’s Night Safari, by taking a walk along the Leopard Trail. In addition to a pair of Sri Lankan leopards, this habitat is also home to clouded leopards, all of which are at their most active at nights, which is why the Night Safari is the best place to view them. In addition to seeing leopards along the Leopard Trail, you will also be able to view everything from the Malayan civet to the zebra and giraffe.

Giant Pandas

Giant Pandas
Singapore’s River Safari is a relatively new river-themed wildlife park with eight different river habitats. One of these is the Yangtze River, inspired by said river in China, which is home to the elusive giant panda, and these incredible creatures are an amazing sight to see. This is the largest panda exhibit in Southeast Asia, making it well worth visiting if you have never seen pandas before

Birds of Prey
Otherwise known as the kings of the skies, birds of prey can be viewed at the Jurong Bird Park, where you will find hawks, vultures and eagles living side by side. From hooked beaks to sharp talons, you will no doubt marvel at these creatures, while learning so much more about each of them.

Parrots
Also at the Jurong Bird Park is the largest collection of parrots in all of Asia. There are 32 aviaries here dedicated to these birds, which are known for being quite sociable, with some of the aviaries containing truly rare species of parrots. From the Blue-eyed Cockatoo to the Blue and Gold Macaw to the Yellow-Naped Amazon, this is a park that all bird lovers should definitely visit.

Singapore is most known for its man-made attractions, but this does not mean that the country has not made any space for nature either. With everything from majestic leopards to soaring eagles calling this island their home, be sure to make some time to say hello to some of Singapore’s animals.

What You’ll See at the Reid Park Zoo

Reid Park Zoo

Located in Tucson, Arizona, the Reid Park Zoo is sprawled out across 24 acres, and is home to over 500 animals. From viewing a herd of elephants to taking a ride on a camel, these are just a few of the things that you will be able to see and do at the Reid Park Zoo.

The Animals
The Reid Park Zoo has four main animal zones, each containing different habitats for the animals that live in them. One of the most popular is the African Animals Zone, which is home to lions and giraffes. In addition to this, it also features a seven acre expansion that was put in in 2012, called Expedition Tanzania. This area, with its mud pits and 90,000 gallon pool, is home to a herd of elephants that guests can watch play and interact, and includes a young female elephant who was the first to be born in Arizona. The South America Zone is also popular, with its jaguars and spectacled bears, while the Asian Zone is where you will the tiger and Malayan sun bear. Finally, the Adaptation Zone is home to a pair of grizzly bears, as well as an Aldabra giant tortoise.

Activities to Take Part In
The zoo hosts several different activities that visitors can take part in, enabling them to interact with animals from a new perspective. The Giraffe Encounter allows guests to meet and feed the giraffe’s at the zoo, giving you the opportunity to really get up-close and personal with these majestic creatures. The zoo’s camel rides are also popular, and these are available throughout the week. In addition to these, the zoo also hosts several daily activities, which are scheduled at the zoo gate, and give you the opportunity to do everything from watch an animal training demonstration to chat with a zoo keeper.

Special Events
The zoo strives to bring the community together, while educating them on the importance of biological diversity, and they do this by hosting a series of special events throughout the year. There are several events designed for children, such as the Little Critters Workshop and the Young Explorers Program, which teaches them about different aspects of being a zoo keeper. For adults, there is plenty to choose from, but one which definitely should not be missed is the annual Brew at the Zoo, which is being held this year in June. This event gives visitors the opportunity to sample a variety of local craft beers, alongside pub-style food, live music and other fun and games. The purposes of these events is to raise funds to support the zoo, with the money raised used to build new animal habitats and improve the zoo overall.

The Reid Park Zoo is open throughout the year, but closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. While tickets can be purchased at the zoo gate, buying them online will save you from having to queue up on the day, giving you even more time to explore all that the zoo has to offer.

The most important falcon welfare institution in the world, as well as the largest, the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital first opened its doors in 1999.Not only does the hospital do so much to help falcons, as well as other animals, but it is also one of Abu Dhabi’s major tourist attractions, and has been visited by a number of VIPs over the years.

Falcons in the UAE
Falcons have long since been loved by falconers in the UAE, with many of them lavishing a huge amount of care, attention and money onto their birds. These birds are treated as part of the family, not only having their very own perch to sleep on next to their owner’s bed, or even in their owner’s office, but also their very own passport, as well as a business class seat on airplanes. These birds are primarily used for hunting purposes, and are trained to hunt game. Each year, the hospital treats around 11,500 birds, running in the same way that a human hospital would. The birds first arrive for a general check-up, which could then lead to further examinations, whether this may be x-rays or surgery, while an emergency room is available for more urgent cases. When a falcon loses or damages even a single feather, this can really throw them off balance during flight, so the hospital keeps multiple spare feathers in stock, so that they can replace any damaged feathers that they may encounter during general check ups.

The Falcon World Tour
Since 2007, the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital has placed a huge emphasis on tourism, which has been helped by the fact that the hospital has been so widely featured in the media over the years. The Falcon World Tour that they offer is the best way to really see all that the hospital does, providing you with a deep insight into the world of falcons. There are two tour options available, one of them two hours long and one of them three hours long, but both of which will immerse you in the history of falconry, as well as giving you the opportunity to hold a falcon. This unique tourism program has won the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital multiple awards from around the globe, as it is the only place in the world that can offer this experience to tourists.

Falcon Passports
The illegal trade of falcons is something that has been hugely on the rise, which is why the UAE recently introduced falcon passports. This means that no falcons are able to be taken abroad without one, and it is the responsibility of the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital to issue these, which visitors will be able to learn more about.

Being one of the leading, and largest, avian hospitals in the world, the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital has earned itself quite the reputation. From the way in which it is able to perform complicated procedures on these rare birds, to the emphasis that they place on educating the public on the importance, as well as the beauty, of these magnificent creatures, a tour of the hospital is definitely worth doing the next time you find yourself in Abu Dhabi.

Best Places to Whale Watch

From November to May, the waters of Hawaii are abundant with humpback whales, making the islands a whale-watchers paradise. While these humpbacks can be seen from all of the Hawaiian islands, these are some of the best places to whale watch if you want a truly unforgettable sighting.

Whale in Kauai
Kauai

One of the best spots on Kauai for whale watching is the Kilauea Lighthouse on the north side of the island, because this area has actually been designated a humpback whale marine sanctuary by the Federal government. Shipwreck Beach is also an idyllic spot where you are likely to be able to see multiple whales from shore, whilst being surrounded by soft white sand and incredible scenery.

Oahu
The south-eastern part of Oahu is the best area on the island for whale watching, from Hanauma Bay to the overlooks near Diamond Head. Makapuu Point has also always been a popular spot, with the winding Makapuu Point Trail to take you there. In addition to the whales, you will be able to have unobstructed views out across the island’s nearby shore islets, which are sanctuaries for many species of native seabirds.

Maui whale sighting

Maui
Maui is considered to be one of the best of the Hawaiian islands for whale watching, and they can be seen from just about anywhere that provides a view of the water. However, if you want to watch them breach and play in ways that you have never seen before, then you need to head to the stretch of Highway 30 that runs between Ma’alaea and Lahaina. As breathtaking a viewing spot as this may be, this is also the windiest stretch of the road, making for quite dangerous driving during the winter months, which is when whale watching season is at its peak, so be sure to pull over at a safe spot in order to really be able to concentrate on the whales.

Whale Watching Tours
While it is relatively easy to watch the whales from shore, there is nothing quite like being able to view them out in the water. There are several whale watching tours available that you can choose from for this, with companies ranging from Hawaii Nautical to Star of Honolulu. These excursions are usually well worth your time, as you will also be able to see everything from Hawaiian Spinner dolphins to rare turtles.

Whale watching is a highly anticipated annual phenomenon in Hawaii, and has been an important part of local culture since the islands’ very early days. If you are viewing whales from the shore, or even from a boat, it can often be tempting to edge nearer, to enjoy a closer view, but keep in mind that the laws state that you cannot get closer than 100 feet to whales in the water, so as not to disturb them, so be sure to keep a safe distance. However, if the whales decide to come nearer to you, which, in local terms, is described as “being mugged”, then be sure to enjoy this rare experience.

Get Outdoors Festival

Held on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of August this year, Ontario’s Get Outdoors Festival takes place at Wye Marsh, the largest wetlands in Ontario. From interactive workshops to wildlife identification sessions, this festival is a way to experience the best of what the great outdoors has to offer.

Guided Canoe and Kayak Tours
Wye Marsh is home to a large amount of wildlife, from the Midland Painted Turtles to the River Otters to the Trumpeter Swans, and taking a ride out onto the water is one of the best ways to experience all of this. These guided tours take place on voyageur canoes, with each one led by a Wye Marsh naturalist.

Cycling

Cycling
With over 25km of cycle trails, renting a bike is a great way to explore Wye Marsh. The festival will have bikes available for rent, although if you do not feel like biking, you can easily walk the trails too. One of the highlights of the trails is the 490-foot floating boardwalk, which takes you out over the water and rewards you with a stunning panoramic view.

Live Animal Demonstrations
While it is always exciting to view wildlife in their natural habitat, experiencing them close-up will help you to learn so much more about them. This is the aim of the live animal demonstrations at the Get Outdoors Festival, where guests will be able to meet animals such as the snapping turtle, fox snake and red-tailed hawk, learning about these unique creatures and the role they play in our ecosystem. The Wye Marsh bee-keeper will also be putting on a talk and demonstration each day of the event, showcasing his gorgeous honeybees and explaining exactly why they are so vital to life on this planet.

Bird watching

Basics of Birding
At the festival, a Wye Marsh naturalist will be on hand to teach visitors the basics of birding. From discovering how to recognize the different bird calls that are constantly sung around Wye Marsh, to learning about the natural environments of these specific birds, these sessions are always a big hit with both adults and children.

Paddle Carving Seminar
New to the festival this year is the Paddle Carving Seminar, which will be held by Roger Foster, who is an instructor at the Carlisle Canoe Co. Visitors will learn all about how to use a century-old tool to carve a paddle from a solid piece of local wood, and are guaranteed to leave the seminar with a beautifully finished paddle, as well as skills that they will be able to carry with them for the rest of their lives.

The Get Outdoors Festival aims to provide people with a new way in which to experience the outdoors, showing them the many different benefits that spending time in nature can have. With the average North American spending 95% of their day indoors, the Get Outdoors Festival is something that everybody should embrace, as you will be able to discover new passions that will encourage you to spend plenty more time outdoors in the future.

The Harvard Museum of Natural History

Harvard Museum of Natural History

Papa Bravo / Shutterstock.com

Situated on the sprawling grounds of Cambridge’s Harvard University, the Harvard Museum of Natural History features a combination of the most exciting specimens from the university’s three other natural history museums. From the permanent exhibitions that showcase the mind-boggling diversity of life that this planet holds, to public lectures and special events where visitors can learn about natural history in even more depth, it is easy to see why this is the most frequently visited out of all of Harvard University’s museums.

Africa, Asia & America
Three of the permanent exhibits at the museum focus on specific geographical areas; Africa, Asia and Central and South America. Each of these exhibits features mounted wildlife exhibits that are native to that particular region. In the Africa exhibit, visitors will be able to see lions, gorillas, a hippopotamus and rare species from the island of Madagascar, while in Asia, visitors will be greeted by a rare Indian rhinoceros, Siberian tigers, cheetahs and the clouded leopard. In the Central and South America exhibit, some of the wildlife highlights include the jaguar, tapir, sloth and an entire wall of hummingbirds.

Bees!
This spring and summer exhibit will be held until November, and features different bee specimens from all over the world. Bees are absolutely vital to the survival of our planet, and this display helps to emphasize this, teaching visitors more about these incredible creatures, as well as showing off the honey-making process.

Climate Change: Our Global Experiment
Climate change is a topic that is becoming increasingly important, and this exhibit is a way for visitors to learn the facts about the issue, in order to make their own decisions about what the planet needs. The exhibit puts on display all of the latest research from the experts at Harvard, as well as other institutions around the world, and also has a simulation globe that visitors can interact with, allowing them to learn about the consequences that climate change has had, as well as what lies in store for the future.

New England Forests
The forests of New England are beautifully unique and diverse, which is exactly what this exhibit aims to celebrate. This multimedia exhibition takes a close look at the way in which New England’s forests have responded to human activity over the years, while showcasing the circle of life that lives within them, from the microscopic insects that live in forest ponds to the ecology of wolves and woodland caribou.

The Harvard Museum of Natural History is home to a number of other exciting exhibits, teaching visitors all about natural history from all over the world. The museum also holds several different special events and classes for adults, from wildlife drawing sessions taught by renowned artists to fascinating talks and lectures on New England’s natural history. The museum itself is open daily, and an admission ticket also grants you access to the adjacent Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, which is also worth a visit if you have some extra time to spare.

Taking a Night Safari

Singapore Night Safari

tristan tan / Shutterstock.com

Considered to be the best rainforest zoo in the world, the Singapore Zoo opened its doors in 1973, and houses over 300 different species of animals, 16% of which are listed as a threatened species. In 1994, the Singapore Zoo launched the Night Safari, the very first safari park in the world dedicated to nocturnal animals, giving visitors the chance to see over 2500 animals in their natural nocturnal habitat. The best way to begin your Night Safari adventure is by hopping on for a guided tram ride, which takes visitors across seven different geographical zones.

Tram Safari
The Tram Safari begins at the Himalayan Foothills, where visitors will be able to see Himalayan tahrs, otherwise known as wild mountain goats, balancing their way across rocky outcrops, as well as markhors, which are the largest goats in the world and have an almost mythical appearance about them. From here, the tram enters the Indian Subcontinent, with its striped hyenas and Gir lions, the latter of which the Night Safari has been successfully breeding, adding to the meager 300 Gir lions that are left in the wild today. Equatorial Africa is next on the route, where visitors will see everything from Cape giraffes to Nile hippos, before entering the Indo-Malayan Region, home to red river hogs. Next up is the Asian Riverine Forest, where the main highlight are the Asian elephants, as well as the free-roaming Malayan tapirs. The Axis deer, Indian wolf, and greater Asian rhinoceros can then be seen in the Nepalese River Valley, before the tram makes its way to the final geographic zone, the Burmese Hillside, which is home to animals such as the Asiatic black bear and the Malayan tiger.

Walking Trails
In addition to the guided tram ride, the Night Safari offers four different walking trails where visitors can experience a much closer view of some of the nocturnal animals. At the Fishing Cat Trail, visitors can watch this stealthy hunter stalk its prey, as well as see barking deer, flying foxes and pangolins. The Leopard Trail boasts the largest collection of wildlife indigenous to South East Asia, home to Sri Lankan leopards, clouded leopards, Gir lions and the golden cat. The East Lodge Trail is where visitors can look into the eyes of the endangered Gir lion, while also listening to the cackling laughter of the spotted hyenas in the distance. The Wallaby Trail is a recent addition to the Night Safari, and was inspired by the wildlife of the Australian Outback. Other than the Fishing Cat Trail, the other three walking trails are all inter-connected, making it easy to enjoy one longer, animal-filled trek.

Entertainment
While most people visit the Night Safari for the sole purpose of seeing the animals, the evening shows that are held are also definitely worth experiencing. The most popular show is the Thumbuakar Performance, where a team of pyro warriors perform cultural dances, flame throwing demonstrations, and show off their fire-eating skills. The Creatures of the Night show is also quite popular, and brings together a few of the nocturnal creatures that have unique skills, on a gorgeous rainforest stage.

The Singapore Zoo and its Night Safari have won numerous awards over the years, with the Night Safari alone welcoming over 1 million visitors each year. For those who want a custom and personalized tour of the Night Safari, the Safari Adventurer Tour is available, and features a dedicated guide that will offer a private and VIP tour of the park.
