An award-winning bakery with stores in New York, DC and Toronto, the Momofuku Milk Bar was founded by Christina Tosi, a pastry chef and judge on hit culinary television show Masterchef. Milk Bar serves up familiar home-style desserts and savory snacks, but with an innovative and playful twist, helping the store to quickly gain worldwide recognition.
Baked Sweet Goods
The majority of people that visit the Momofuku Milk Bar head straight for their range of baked goods, as this is what the store is best known for. Of the six cookie varieties on offer, the Compost Cookie is, without a doubt, the most popular, and consists of pretzels, potato chips, coffee, oats, butterscotch and chocolate chips, resulting in a heavenly combination of sweet and savory. The store also sells a line of healthy baked treats called Klossies, which were originally conceived as part of a collaboration with supermodel Karlie Kloss. When it comes to cakes, most of the Momofuku Milk Bar stores stock three flavors, with more available if you order in advance, from the Apple Pie Cake to the Salted Pretzel Cake.
Baked Savory Goods
While most visit Milk Bar to satisfy their sweet tooth, the store also sells some incredibly delicious baked savory goods. Their range of buns and breads always look tantalizing, from the Bagel Bomb to the Egg and Cheddar Bomb to the hoisin roasted pork shoulder bun.
Momofuku Milk Bar sells a selection of shakes that are always popular, especially on a hot summers day. Their Cereal Milk Soft Serve is said to taste just like the milk at the end of a bowl of cornflakes, while the Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel Shake tastes exactly like a freshly baked cinnamon sugar pretzel. For those of you who would prefer a more conventional beverage, the store also serves up hot tea and coffee drinks, as well as some other innovative hot beverages, such as the Miso Butterscotch Chai.
For those of you who want some first-hand experience when it comes to creating some of the delicious treats on sale at Milk Bar, it is easy to sign up for one of the store’s baking classes, which are held at their Williamsburg Brooklyn classroom. From learning about all of the different steps necessary to make your very own Crack Pie to discovering the secrets to the store’s ever-popular cake truffles, by the end of the class you will have a new appreciation for Momofuku’s products, and will be heading home with the cakes and truffles that you have made that day.
Named by Bon Apetit magazine as one of the most exciting bakeries in the country, it is no surprise that the Momofuku Milk Bar is witnessing tremendous success, and it likely won’t be long before more Milk Bars open up around America. Until then, be sure to pop into one of their three locations if you ever get the chance, because the care, thought and creativity that Momofuku puts into each and every one of their products simply cannot be beaten.
