Fall 2020: The Top 7 Destinations to Visit

Rocky Mountains Colorado

The Covid-19 pandemic put a halt to most travel plans over the summer, and while many still feel safer staying close to home for now, others are desperate to get away for a while before the winter hits.

There’s no denying that fall is such a stunning time of year to travel, and for those who want to spend some time in nature admiring the fall foliage, social distancing is relatively easy. Here are seven destinations in the USA that are perfect for a 2020 fall getaway.

Napa Valley, California

Vineyards in Napa Valley

Napa Valley is famous for its vineyards, many of which produce some of the finest wines in the world. While most tend to visit during the summer, fall sees the region glowing with fiery hues, not only from the incredible diversity of native and non-native trees, but also from the grapevines preparing themselves for the winter.

Food and wine enthusiasts love what Napa Valley has to offer. There are hundreds of wineries here, many of which are also well-versed in the art of fine dining, resulting in some exquisite gastronomical experiences. This is also the the season for grape harvesting, with some vineyards allowing visitors to take part in this annual event.

Of course, there’s so much more to Napa than just its wine…

The Calistoga hot springs and mud baths are known for their healing and therapeutic properties, while Downtown Napa is packed with quirky stores, chic cafes, and plenty of lush greenery. If you really want to treat yourself, book a hot air balloon ride over Napa Valley, preferably at sunrise. You may not appreciate the early wake up call at the time, but once you’re up in the air watching the morning sun cast its warm glow over the vineyards below, the effort will be more than worth it.

Eastern Shore, Maryland

Wild horses in Eastern Shore, Maryland

Maryland’s Eastern Shore is known for its fall festivals, with their Oktoberfest festival in particular being one of the best in the country. While these won’t be taking place amid the Coronavirus pandemic, the Eastern Shore is still deserving of a visit this fall.

Begin by spending some time at the Assateague Island National Seashore and State Park. Although the temperatures may be too cool for you to spend the day sunbathing on the beach, the wild horses that roam this dreamy spot of coastline are definitely a sight to behold. The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, which boasts three distinct ecosystems, is another spot for nature lovers to visit, with such a wide array of wildlife calling this refuge home.

To appreciate the water from a different perspective, charter a boat for the day. Whether you indulge in some fishing, with Chesapeake Bay in particular known for its abundance of rockfish, or simply relax and soak up your surroundings, this is a great way to take some time out while keeping your distance from others.

The Eastern Shore has also been attracting wine enthusiasts lately. While most tend to flock to California for a wine tasting vacation, many are now recognizing the outstanding quality produced in the Eastern Shore. Follow the Chesapeake Wine Trail to sample some of the region’s finest.

North Adams, Massachusetts

Road in fall in North Adams

Massachusetts is known for its great outdoors, as well as its incredible leaf peeping opportunities, making it easy to plan a fall vacation here if you want to stay away from the crowds. While there are several great hotels to choose from, the area is sprinkled with historic Victorian homes that you can rent through AirBnB, as well as rural farms that have transformed extra spaces into fabulous guest rooms.

Speaking of the farms in the area, these produce deliciously fresh produce that the restaurants throughout North Adams make use of. The food scene here is thriving, making it a top destination for foodies to visit.

The best way to see the fall foliage would be by taking the Mohawk Trail, which stretches out for 63 miles, making it perfect for a day road trip. You could also hike up Mount Greylock, famous for being the highest point in the state, or spend the day exploring the Natural Bridge State Park. This protected area encompasses a marble quarry that dates back to the 1800’s. Although the quarry has long since been abandoned, the naturally-formed marble arches here are a sight to behold.

Of course, you’ll likely head into the city for a visit too, and you’ll quickly be able to see why North Adams was experiencing quite the surge in tourism before Covid-19 struck. Compared to the rest of the Berkshires, North Adams is known for its edgy and trendy vibe. Its art scene became huge after the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art opened in 1999, followed by a number of other museums, galleries, and art festivals.

Telluride, Colorado

Mountains in Colorado

Set in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Telluride is surrounded by huge swathes of outdoor space, making it an ideal destination during this pandemic. The wild mountainous terrain that you will find here is what Telluride is famous for, with many of the area’s best activities taking place in nature.

While Telluride’s scenery is spectacular no matter the time of year, it really comes into its own each fall, when the aspens turn to a vibrant gold and the air takes on a crisper edge. There are numerous hiking trails that begin from the center of town, meaning that you don’t have to go too far for a different panorama each day. However, for some of the best views, take a leisurely walk along the San Miguel River Trail – it connects up to a few other trails too, such as the Idarado Legacy Trail and the Boomerang Trail, making it easy to extend your hike if you simply cannot get enough of your surroundings.

Santa Barbara, California

Santa Barbara trees and river

There may already be one Californian destination on this list, but Santa Barbara definitely deserves a mention too. With this region home to such a huge array of different trees, fall hits Santa Barbara pretty slowly, with the city taking on a more subtle progression of color rather than a sudden, vibrant burst.

Although Santa Barbara may have quite a large population, there are so many slices of outdoor space here, making it easy to scape the crowds. The Los Padres National Forest sits just behind Santa Barbara, with numerous trails for visitors to choose from.

The beaches of Santa Barbara more than warrant a visit too. For those who want to try their hand at some surfing, the waves here are usually quite dormant in the spring and summer, but spring into action come fall. El Capitan State Beach is great for surfers seeking an adrenaline rush, while Campus Point and Rincon are all legendary too. If you would prefer to relax on the sand, head on over to Jalama Beach. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot some of the 28,000 gray whales that migrate past the coast here twice a year.

Think it’ll be too cold to relax on the beach?

Think again – Santa Barbara is surprisingly warm in the fall when the Santa Ana winds blow in, making it worth being near a beach.

While you will want to limit how much time you spend in the city, you can’t visit Santa Barbara without indulging in a little retail therapy. With its open-air, Spanish-style layout, Paseo Neuvo is the place to go, which you will find in downtown Santa Barbara. This shopping destination is known for being the finest in the city – in addition to the numerous international brands you will find here, you will also come across the OROGOLD Santa Barbara store. Stop by for free product demonstrations and a luxurious VIP facial featuring real 24K gold.

Savannah, Georgia

Oak trees in fall in Savannah

Savannah takes on a calmer and quieter air in the fall, making this the perfect time to visit. You won’t have to deal with the intense heat and humidity of the summer, meaning that you’ll easily be able to spend more time outdoors and away from the crowds.

If you’re staying downtown, a brief stroll around the city will reward you with architectural delights, along with numerous city parks that offer up pockets of respite when things get too busy on the street. While there are countless indoor attractions throughout the city too, keep in mind that most of these will be operating on a limited entry basis.

To explore Savannah’s wilder side, head on over to Skidaway Island State Park, where you will find a mix of salt marsh and maritime forest habitats. Fort McAllister State Park is only ten miles from the heart of Savannah and stretches out for 1,725 acres, with its focal point being an earthen-work fort that was once used to defend the city during the American Civil War.

Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach

The eclectic coastal city of Virginia Beach may be a popular spring break destination, but it’s also a prime spot to visit in the fall. As you can tell from the city’s name, its beach is one of its highlights, with 38 miles of shoreline ensuring that people can easily keep their distance. Early mornings are the best time to visit – not only will there be fewer crowds, but the sunrise coming up over the horizon, as well as the dolphins frolicking in its warm glow, will be one of the most memorable sights of your life.

If you would like to see the spectacular marine life up-close, take a kayak trip out into the water and then spend some time dipping and diving with the dolphin pods and turtles. There’s usually a 90% chance of a sighting with each trip in the fall, giving you pretty good odds!

Speaking of the sea…

Virginia Beach is famous for its fresh seafood, especially when it comes to oysters. You’ll find these being served just about everywhere in the city, with the beautiful balance of sweetness and brine coming from Virginia Beach’s perfect location at the entrance of Chesapeake Bay. If you can’t get enough of the oysters, take a boat tour out to the Lynnhaven River, where you will be able to learn more about these creatures and sample some straight from the water.

Foodies will love all of Virginia Beach’s other fall produce – there are 16 pick-your-own farms dotted around nearby. These are ideal for bagging some fresh ingredients that you can then cook up yourself if you’re staying at a holiday home instead of a hotel. From figs, apples and blackberries to kale, squash, and sweet potatoes, you really will be spoilt for choice.

Another must-visit in Virginia Beach is the First Landing State Park, which earned its name by being the first site at which colonists arrived when Jamestown was first settled. There are miles of trails to choose from here, as well as kayak rides through the tidal marshes and swamps. False Cape State Park is another spot to visit if you would like to see some wildlife, with everything from wild horses to bald eagles to more than 300 species of migratory birds being spotted here.

Round off your visit with a shopping spree – Lynnhaven Mall is a favorite amongst the locals. Being the largest mall in the region with 1,170,000 square feet of space, there are hundreds of stores to browse here. Don’t forget to visit the OROGOLD Virginia Beach store in the mall too so that you can treat your skin to some luxury skin care.

With Covid-19 still rife in many areas, people are now choosing their fall vacation destinations based on proximity to home. If you happen to live near to one of the above locations, then now is the perfect time to book yourself in for a short break that will take you away from the stresses of this pandemic.

Napa Valley is always a joy to visit, but fall makes this experience all the more special. This part of Northern California is home to a large number of both native and non-native trees, and every single one of these turns into a fiery shade each fall.

The vineyards that Napa Valley is famous for put on their own vibrant display. Once October rolls around, all of the leaves on the thousands of grapevines turn to a vivid amber color, providing stunning views all around.

While You’re There…

October happens to be quite a busy time for vineyards, and, if you plan things right, you may be able to take part in some of their seasonal activities, such as grape stomping.

Located in Golden Gate Park, the San Francisco Botanical Garden features 55 acres of magnificent foliage each fall. Due to the vast array of different plants here, 9000 species from around the world to be specific, the range of colors is spectacular – from the purple/reds of the dogwoods to the striking gold of the gingko trees.

While 60-90 minute tours of the gardens are available, you can also opt to wander the grounds yourself to take in all of the incredible fall foliage. Each garden has a unique theme, whether this is related to a country or to something else, such as the Ancient Plants or the Garden of Fragrance, giving you something different to look at with each area that you visit.

Be sure to make some time to also take a look at the Japanese Tea Garden, which is located in Golden Gate Park too. This is the oldest public Japanese garden in the USA, and the Japanese maples here, with koi ponds and a zen garden serving as a serene backdrop, also transform into dazzling shades each fall.

Treat Your Skin

Once you have finished exploring the San Francisco Botanical Garden, take a stroll over to Market Street. In amongst the glitzy designer stores and branded boutiques here, you will also find the OROGOLD San Francisco store. Stop by for a free VIP facial, product demonstrations, and some of the best skin care advice you will have ever had.

Fall falls upon Hope Valley in around mid September, so you’ll need to act fast if you were hoping for a fall getaway this year. Located in Alpine County, Hope Valley is considered to be a hidden gem – even many locals don’t know about this gorgeous spot.

In the fall, the dense willows and aspens here put on a vibrant display of bright gold foliage, making it look as though the hillsides and meadows are up in flames. There are plenty of outdoor activities to do here too, from fishing to hiking to camping.

Feeling Adventurous?

Just south of Hope Valley, just before South Lake Tahoe, you’ll find a small creek, which is the site that thousands of salmon choose to spawn at this time of year. Time your visit right and you’ll be able to see their offspring make their way into the world for the first time.

Located in Cupertino, the Rancho San Antonio Preserve is a popular state park with just under 4000 acres of grounds to explore. With much of this being open space, not many people think of the preserve when it comes to fall foliage, but if you head on over to where the majestic oaks and maples are growing, you will be treated to quite the sight.

In addition to the gorgeous fall foliage here, you will also be able to see the persimmon trees full of flowers, adding a beautiful contrast to your surroundings.

Getting Active

To really explore the beauty of the Rancho San Antonio Preserve, you’ll need to make your way through some of the park’s trails. These snake through the landscape for 24 miles, and there are several options to choose from:

  • Wildcat Loop Trail – this three mile trail will take you through fern-filled canyons and open meadows, before reaching a viewpoint that showcases both Mt. Tamalpais and Mt. Hamilton
  • Stephen E. Abbors Trail – this trail, which stretches out for just under four miles, is a little more challenging with its 1600 ft gain in elevation. It climbs up the Black Mountain for panoramic views of the bay area, before linking up with some of the other trails in the park
  • Black Mountain Trail – this four mile trail also takes you up the Black Mountain, but with a different route that showcases views of the Santa Clara Valley and Stevens Creek Canyon

For those who like wildlife, there is plenty to be seen throughout the park. However, be aware that you may also end up sighting a mountain lion – if this happens, leave the area immediately and report this to a ranger.

Located just north-east of Sacramento, even the drive to Plumas County will impress, with Highway 70 being designated a National Scenic Byway. The entire road is lined with Black Oak, Mountain Dogwood, and Big Leaf Maple, treating you to huge swathes of crimsons, reds, and golds as you drive along.

Once you get there, follow the area’s Leaf Peeping Map so that you can figure out the best spots to head to. Some of these include:

  • Feather River Canyon
  • Indian Valley
  • Lake Almanor
  • Bucks Lake

When to Visit

Fall touches upon different areas at various times, but due to the diversity of nature in Plumas County, you have quite a long viewing season when it comes to fall foliage. Any time between September and mid November would work, although you would need to adjust your route depending on the day you are visiting.

Fortunately, Plumas County offers daily leaf peeping reports each fall, which should help you to plot the perfect route.

For many people, the first thing that comes to mind when fall is mentioned is apples, and this is exactly what you will find at Apple Hill. Located in El Dorado County, Apple Hill is packed with fruit orchards that really come to life each fall.

Of course, picking your own apples is a must-do activity here, and there are so many different varieties to choose from, including:

  • Golden Delicious
  • Rome Beauty
  • Fuji
  • Pink Lady
  • Granny Smith

The farms in this area also grow a number of other fall crops too, from grapes and pumpkins to plums and persimmons. High Hill is known for its apple milkshakes, while Rainbow Orchards is famous for its apple cider donuts, making this trip a must for eager foodies.

If you can’t decide where to go, the Apple Hill Growers Association provides maps and routes to enable you to make the most of your visit.

One thing to keep in mind as you are driving around the area is that the roads here can sometimes be treacherous. There will likely be so much out of your window that will constantly be grabbing your attention, but the roads also feature quite sharp bends, so make sure that you keep your wits about you.

Getting Ready for Christmas

Once you have eaten your fill of fresh fall foods, make your way over to Indian Rock Tree Farm. Since this isn’t a part of the Apple Hill Growers Association, it’s considered to be quite the hidden gem, with many visitors not realizing that this little slice of Christmas sits just around the corner from them.

Indian Rock Tree Farm is known for being one of the oldest Christmas tree farms in the area, and they produce several different varieties that will soon be used as Christmas trees. From the Douglas fir to the Canaan fir to the Sequoia, these evergreens may not put on a colorful display of fall foliage, but they are still impressive enough to warrant a visit.

Sacramento, you're pretty 💛

There aren’t many cities that offer the same level of fall foliage to compete with the many countryside options out there, but Sacramento is different. With its nickname being the City of Trees, the downtown area of Sacramento, along with parts of midtown, are covered with dense tree canopies that were designed to protect the city from the sweltering heat of the summer sun.

Come fall, these trees break out into a mind-boggling array of fall colors, which gently flutter to the ground whenever a strong wind blows. The contrast between city life around you and the beautiful foliage above also adds an ethereal appeal to fall in Sacramento, making this something that everyone should experience at least once.

Exploring the City

As you make your way around Sacramento to check out the fall foliage, you will likely come across some of the city’s most famous attractions. The Governor’s Mansion, Sutter’s Fort, and the California State Capitol Building are must-see spots for history buffs, while those into art and culture should check out the Crocker Art Museum, which is famous for being one of the first major art museums to open in the country.

Shopaholics will feel right at home in Sacramento too – there are several big shopping streets here where you can indulge in some retail therapy. In amongst the many different shopping centers sits the Arden Fair Mall, which is home to over 165 stores. Some of the most-loved brands in the country call this mall home, along with OROGOLD, where you will be able to enjoy free product demonstrations and luxury facials.

Located in Woodside, Filoli Gardens is recognized worldwide for its abundance of natural beauty and sheer diversity when it comes to trees and other plants. The fall foliage here is not to be missed, with the gardens inspired by a traditional English country estate.

The formal gardens here are usually what attract the most visitors, but, just beyond this, you will find the Filoli Nature Preserve. If you want to see fall foliage in a wilder setting, this is the area to head to, with redwood stands, oak forests, and so much more. Wildlife is plentiful in the area as well, whether this may be deer, lizards, or an amazing variety of birds.

There is a mile-long nature trail that visitors can explore here, which ends up at the Sally MacBridge Nature Center, another fascinating experience. There are several domestic animals that live in the nearby field, from turkeys to California quail, all of which look especially stunning with the fall foliage as their backdrop. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Once you’re done with all of that walking, head to the garden’s restaurant, called the Quail’s Nest Cafe. The focus here is on fresh, local, and sustainable food, with many of the ingredients used coming from the gardens themselves.

A Virtual Visit

With all that’s going on in the world right now due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Filoli Gardens understands that many people are going to be missing out on their fall foliage this year. Fortunately, the garden offers the opportunity for virtual visits, meaning that even those on the opposite side of the world will be able to appreciate the beauty that this garden offers throughout the year.

With so much color and beauty all around, many would consider fall to be the most spectacular time of year. Whether leaf peeping is something that you do annually, or you simply want to take some time out of your busy life this year to appreciate the magnificent fall foliage around you, these Northern California spots are guaranteed to not disappoint.

Fall in Downtown Sacramento

Fall season in downtown Sacramento, USA

After a long and hot summer, locals in Sacramento usually welcome in the crisp, cool days of fall with open arms. For those who want to make the most of all that the season has to offer, here are a few of the best fall activities to try in the city.

Sacramento River Fall Foliage
Fall foliage is always one of the highlights of the fall months, and the best place in Sacramento to view this is along the Sacramento River. The river is lined on both sides by a variety of different trees, all of which transform from green to golds and reds in the late fall months. While you can simply take a stroll along the river to take in all of the colors, you could also try out a river cruise, which will give you the opportunity to enjoy a meal or a glass of champagne as you cruise by the stunning foliage.

Walking Tours
With the weather being slightly cooler in the fall, this is a great time of the year to sign up for a walking tour, as you will not feel as overwhelmed by the heat as you would have in the summer. There are so many different tours available, depending on what you are interested in. For those who want to soak up some history, try a historic walking tour of Old Sacramento, or, if you are an avid foodie, sign up for food tours that showcase the city’s culinary specialties.

Fall Festivals
There are so many fall festivals to choose from in Sacramento, ranging from music to food to beer. The California Brewers Festival is always a popular one, as this showcases an incredible selection of local brewers and beers, as does Oktoberfest, which is also a great place to soak up some German culture. The annual Farm to Fork Festival is another one that you should not miss, especially since Sacramento is the farm to fork capital of the United States, guaranteeing the highest quality food. For those visiting Sacramento with their family, including young children, do not miss out on the Delta Fall Harvest Festival, which offers everything from grape stomping to pumpkin picking to hay rides. The Sacramento Harvest Festival is also worth checking out, and this takes place on the weekend before Thanksgiving, with everything from music and entertainment to hundreds of stalls where you can do some shopping.

Apple Hill
As you would imagine from its name, Apple Hill is abundant with apple trees, and there are over 50 ranches located here. In the fall, these apples are ripe for picking, and many of the ranches here offer pick-your-own experiences for visitors. Denver Dan’s is one of the very best orchards to head to, as they grow over 50 different varieties of apples, giving you the opportunity to sample different types and learn about the unique features of each.

Sacramento is a fantastic destination to visit throughout the year, but it definitely does take on a magical air during the months of fall. From bountiful harvests to seasonal festivals, this is a great time of the year to visit California’s capital.

Autumn in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is incredibly atmospheric in the autumn months, making this a fantastic time of the year to pay this Russian city a visit. From the golden leaves in the city’s famous parks to the benefit of fewer crowds after the peak summer travel season, here are just a few of the reasons as to why you should visit St. Petersburg in the fall.

Tsarkoe Selo

The Autumn Colors at Tsarskoe Selo
Tsarskoe Selo, which is now called Pushkin, was the Tsars’ former summer residence, and, being just 24 kilometres from the center of St. Petersburg, is the perfect place for a day trip. This suburb is filled with lush maple trees, and, in the autumn, you will see nothing but golden leaves for miles. In addition to taking in all of the gorgeous colors around you, you can also spend some time exploring the 18th century baroque Catherine Palace, as well as the nearby Alexander Palace.

Russian food

Seasonal Russian Foods
Dishes always taste their best when they have been created from seasonal ingredients, and while Russian cuisine is already pretty incredible, this is taken to a whole new level when the seasonal ingredients from autumn begin to show up on plates. From seasonal roots, such as turnips and beetroot, to seasonal herbs, such as heather and juniper, one of the best places to try these local delights is at COCOCO Restaurant. This eatery works with 20 local farmers from nearby regions and is known for being one of the best farm-to-table restaurants in the city.

Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood

Sightseeing
There are so many sights to see around St. Petersburg, but these can often become uncomfortably crowded during the summer months, as hoards of tourists flock to each of them. However, the autumn travel season is much quieter, resulting in uninterrupted photo opportunities at all of the city’s famous sights. From the lack of queues at the State Hermitage Museum to the quiet serenity of the Church of Our Saviour on the Spilled Blood, sightseeing becomes a whole lot more enjoyable in St. Petersburg in the autumn months.

Ballet

Theatre Season
Autumn is known for being theatre season in St. Petersburg, with the city’s world-class theatre companies hosting a wide range of productions. The oldest theatre in the city is the Hermitage Theatre, and this is well worth visiting if you want to soak up some heritage along with a performance. Another option is the Mariinsky Theater, which has been running since the 1860s and is home to the Russian Ballet and Opera groups, who are considered to be in the top six in the world, making this quite the cultural highlight. The Mariinsky II is the newest theatre to hit the city, and this one is much more innovative and contemporary than the original Mariinsky, especially when it comes to technology and acoustics.

The severe cold that St. Petersburg faces in the winter months often puts the majority of tourists off, which is why they tend to flock to the city in the summer. However, a visit during the autumn months would be a much better idea, as not only is the weather still balmy, but the lack of crowds, as well as the incredible colors, will make your trip even more memorable.

Most Beautiful Fall Destinations

Fall is a stunning time of the year, with the foliage transforming green landscapes into fiery, vibrant shades. Take a look at OROGOLD’s picks of the most beautiful fall destinations to give you some inspiration when it comes to planning your own fall vacation.

Tuscany, Italy.

Tuscany, Italy
While there is no arguing that Tuscany has some beautiful fall foliage, one of the best reasons to visit Tuscany this season is because this is harvest time, and the locals take their harvest extremely seriously. When it comes to traditional Italian gastronomy, Tuscany is at the heart of this, making it an ideal fall destination for any foodies out there. Festivals celebrating each harvest, from grapes to mushrooms to polenta to pumpkin, are held throughout the region, giving you the opportunity to taste some of the best, and freshest, food that the area has to offer. While there, OROGOLD recommends going truffle hunting in the Tuscan forests before eating your findings in a delicious pasta dish, or going on an olive tasting tour if you are in Tuscany later on in the season.

Ontario, Canada.

Ontario, Canada
One of OROGOLD’s favorite things to do in the fall in Ontario is to take a drive along the Niagara Parkway, the road that Winston Churchill said was “the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world”. Canada’s Ontario province has some of the most spectacular fall foliage that we have seen, and a great place to take this all in is the Algonquin Provincial Park. With almost 8000 square km of lush forests, twisting rivers and peaceful lakes, the beauty all around you is absolutely breathtaking. OROGOLD recommends going for a paddle in a canoe to best enjoy the display from the maple and red oak trees.

Huangshan Mountain

Huangshan Mountain, China
Huangshan, also known as the Yellow Mountains, is a mountain range in the east of China, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The peaks of the mountains are all lined with trees, and when these begin to transform into their fall colors, the sight is simply incredible, with the wispy clouds around them making the scene seems slightly magical. The spectacle attracts visitors from all over China, so be prepared for crowds. To see the foliage at its most beautiful, OROGOLD recommends going out at sunrise, as the colors from the sun complement the foliage in an ethereal way. For when you aren’t taking in the fall beauty, there are plenty of other things to keep you occupied, from visiting the many hot springs in the region, to tasting the area’s famous Chinese teas, to learning more about Huangshan’s rich history.

OROGOLD loves to travel in the fall, taking in the beautiful foliage from all over the world, as well as experiencing the fall traditions that different countries have. From a sunrise walk through the Yellow Mountains in China to helping to harvest olives in Tuscany, these amazing fall destinations will make you appreciate the season in a completely different way.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

The Berkshires, Massachusetts
A rural region up in the mountains of western Massachusetts, the Berkshires are a great weekend destination for any art and culture lover. With eight different museums, renowned stage productions, a variety of dance festivals and a unique little music venue, there is plenty to keep you busy. To make the experience even better is Berkshire’s beautiful natural surroundings, with the mountains and meadows turning into hues of golden and red during fall. These areas are all easily accessible in a number of ways, from bike to balloon to raft to horse, and even on the back of a llama! When you want to wind down after a busy day, OROGOLD recommends visiting one of Berkshire’s amazing spas – another feature that the area is well known for!

Hudson River Valley, New York

Hudson River Valley, New York
Just 90 minutes from Manhattan, the Hudson River Valley, with its rolling hills, meandering wine trails and cascading waterfalls, is certainly a picturesque destination, especially during fall. From stopping in at the Peekshill Brewery for ‘Hoppy Hour’ to taking an afternoon stroll on the Walkway Over the Hudson, one of the longest elevated pedestrian bridges in the world, to hiking through the Overlook Wild Forest, there is definitely plenty to keep you busy. While there is a whole array of exciting dining establishments to choose from, OROGOLD highly recommends the Bocuse Restaurant. Opened by the Culinary Institute of America, the restaurant serves up high quality French cuisine at extremely affordable prices.

Shenandoah Valley, Virginia

Shenandoah Valley, Virginia
While Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley may be great as a year-round destination, OROGOLD’s favorite time to visit is during the fall, when the season brings out the area’s rich golden colors. It is in the Shenandoah Valley that you will find one of America’s most scenic drives, the Blue Ridge Parkway, another great way to take in the beauty of the season. Driving enthusiasts may also want to check out the Skyline Drive, which offers up 75 scenic outlook points for you to fully admire your surroundings. Of course, no fall visit to the Shenandoah Valley would be complete without some apple picking, and the Marker-Miller Orchards are a great place to do this. The nearby town of Lexington, which has appeared on many lists of the best small towns to visit, is packed with interesting galleries, antique shops and other delights, all definitely worth exploring.

America’s Most Scenic Fall Drives

With a dazzling display of fiery colors, fall is definitely one of Mother Nature’s most spectacular shows. With over 3000 miles of national scenic byways, and many other equally scenic roads, taking a drive is a great way to experience all that fall has to offer. Here are some of OROGOLD’s picks of America’s most scenic fall drives.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia and North Carolina
Fondly referred to by many as ‘America’s favorite drive’, the Blue Ridge Parkway covers 469 miles of stunning scenery and a rich sense of cultural heritage. Beginning in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and ending in North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park, fall is one of the best times of the year to take this drive. The speed limit is typically 45 miles per hour, allowing you to meander along at a leisurely pace, fully taking in your beautiful surroundings. For those doing the drive in October, OROGOLD recommends paying a visit to the Mabry Mill, where craft demonstrations are held each Sunday for the public, including a delicious apple-butter making demonstration.

Columbia River Highway, Oregon

Columbia River Highway, Oregon
A 75 mile scenic highway that winds its way up cliffs measuring 900 feet, the Columbia River Highway is the drive to take if you want to see dramatic fall scenery. Built in 1913, the highway was created to highlight the natural beauty of the surrounding area, making it no surprise that it earned itself National Historic Landmark status. The cliffs that the drive take you through overlook the river and valley below, with the landscape lighting up with vibrantly striking shades each fall. If you want to further explore the area, OROGOLD would recommend that you stop off and take advantage of one of the many hiking trails around the highway, some of which lead to picturesque hidden waterfalls.

Grand Mesa, Colorado

Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway, Colorado
Colorado’s landscape turns into a brilliant tapestry of colors each fall, helped by the popular Aspen trees that transform into vivid hues of gold. The Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway begins at route 70, and takes you through narrow canyons, evergreen forests, fields of wildflowers, and sprawling lakes, reflecting the fiery shades around them. The 63 mile byway ends at the world’s largest flat-top mountain, the Grand Mesa, which offers dramatic views of the Rocky Mountains and sprawling forests. If you are travelling in October, then you are right on time for Applefest, which is held by the town of Cedaredge in celebration of the area’s apple harvest. Another stop that OROGOLD would suggest you make is to the tiny town of Skyway, which is nestled into the Grand Mesa National Forest.

There is no denying the beauty that fall brings, casting a gorgeous new light over even the most captivating of natural landscapes. From a dramatic drive up the Columbia River Highway, to a leisurely meander along the Blue Ridge Parkway, these fall drives are definitely ones that you should try to make!
