Top Five Outdoor Activities in Sacramento

Couple cycling in the outdoors

Sacramento enjoys gorgeous weather throughout the year, and there will always be days when it is just too beautiful to stay cooped up inside. From splashing away in the river to taking a bike ride, here are the top five outdoor activities that California’s capital has to offer.

Cycling The American River Trail
The American River Trail stretches for 32 miles, beginning at the heart of downtown Sacramento and ending up at Folsom. While it is just as enjoyable walking this trail, this does mean that you will not get to see all of it, which is why cycling is usually the preferred option, as there is so much scenery that you will not want to miss. If you do not want to cycle on your own, there are many different cycling events that you can sign up for, as well as races if you are feeling especially competitive.

The Sacramento River
There are so many outdoor activities to be found along the Sacramento River, making this a great spot for water-lovers to head to. In the summer months, the water levels are lower, but there are still plenty of stretches that are great for white water rafting, making this one of the most popular river sports. Alternatively, there are many outlets that rent kayaks for the day, or, if you would prefer something more relaxing, you could simply grab a tube and float your way down the river.

Amusement Parks
Sacramento is home to several different amusement parks, and these are always a fun way in which to spend a sunny day. Funderland is one of the most popular, and is designed for children between the ages of 2 to 12, as is Fairytale Town, which features characters and play sets from popular fairytales. If you are seeking out a larger, more thrill-focussed amusement park, you may have to head further afield to the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, which is about a two hour drive from the city center.

A Round of Golf
Sacramento boasts several spectacular golf courses, making this a haven for those who enjoy the sport. Each course is quite unique in its own way, such as with Teal Bend, which features 250 acres of natural wetlands and the largest all-grass driving range in the entire city. Dark Horse is a course with quite an innovative layout, while the granite quarry turned lake at Turkey Creek is the focal point of the course. For those who are seeking out a private, rather than public, golf course, head to the Winchester Country Club, where you will be able to enjoy amazing views of Sacramento Valley as you play.

William Land Park
Although William Land Park may be located in the heart of the city, it is easy to forget that you are in Sacramento once you enter its green, expansive grounds. There are so many different outdoor activities that you can try your hand at here, from baseball to the zoo, and there are also several outdoor special events held here throughout the year.

For those who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, you will definitely have fun in Sacramento. Whether you are into adrenaline-filled sports or simply want to lay back and soak up some sun, you will be spoilt for choice with all that the city has to offer.

The Caribbean’s Top Destinations

Dominated by turquoise waters and soft white sand, each of the Caribbean islands offers quite the different experience. From the world-renowned diving at sites all around the Cayman Islands to the historic architecture of San Juan in Puerto Rico, these are some of the top destinations in the Caribbean.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico has been a popular destination for many years, not only because it is home to some of the best beaches in the world, but also due to its rich sense of history and culture. While San Juan, the island’s capital, has some of the top attractions, with its historic forts, castles, museums and architecture, an increasing number of visitors are now choosing to head to Vieques, found about 40 miles east of San Juan. The reason for this is largely due to the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, whose beaches have made it onto countless worldwide top ten lists, offering up some of the most exquisite natural beauty that many have set their eyes on.

Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands are famous for their deep-sea diving, and there are hundreds of different spots to choose from. One of the most popular is the Kittiwake, which was a 251 foot submarine that belonged to the U.S navy. This rescue vessel now lies just off from Seven Mile Beach, and it because the top of it is only eight feet below the surface of the water, snorkelers can also explore parts of it. From the diving and glitzy resorts of Grand Cayman, to the deep-sea fishing opportunities of Cayman Brac, to the diverse wildlife and nature of Little Cayman, visitors to the Cayman Islands definitely never find themselves bored.

Jamaica

Jamaica
Jamaica attracts a wide variety of travelers, and this is because it offers such a diverse experience. Nature-lovers travel from all over the world to experience Jamaica’s lush rainforests, exotic wildlife and sandy beaches, while music buffs are always excited to visit the birthplace of reggae music, and the home of the Bob Marley Museum. Those who want to stay active and play some sports make full use of the diving, snorkeling and other water sports opportunities available, and always pay at least one visit to Montega Bay, which is known for having some of the best golf courses in all of the Caribbean.

Haiti
When you take into consideration all that Haiti has to offer, it would seem as though this island is usually quite underrated. However, with gleaming white sand, sparkling clear waters and rows of swaying palm trees, it offers the same tropical experience as the other Caribbean islands. In addition to its natural beauty, Haiti also has a strong Afro-Caribbean music and arts scene that you will not find on other islands, making this ideal for those who want to soak up some culture. There have been a number of high-end boutique hotels opening up around Haiti in recent years, so while the majority of tourists may still be flocking to other Caribbean islands, it would seem as though Haiti is set for quite the comeback.

The Caribbean makes frequent appearances on many bucket lists, and this is because, with over 700 islands to choose from, there really is a destination that everybody will enjoy. From the rainforests and reggae beats of Jamaica to the historic forts of Puerto Rico, there is so much to see and do in the Caribbean that it is easy to see why travellers return here time and time again.
