The 11 Most Instagrammable Beaches in the USA

Hanalei Bay in Hawaii

It won’t be long before summer draws to a close, meaning that if you haven’t yet had a beach getaway this season, now is the time to do so. Of course, everyone wants some good vacation snaps to share on social media, so if visual appeal is what you’re after, here are the X most Instagrammable beaches in the USA.

Shark Fin Cove, California

View this post on Instagram

Sunsets over the ocean just never get old 😍 – No matter how many sunsets I see, I still find myself excited for each one, as the anticipation builds. What colors will appear, how will the clouds form, or will anything even happen? I think it’s this unpredictable beauty that makes each one such a blessing 🌅

A post shared by Michael Matti (@michaelmatti) on Feb 3, 2020 at 1:05pm PST

Secret beaches always have such a special feel to them, and this is exactly what you will find at Shark Fin Cove. Hidden away off Highway 1, this beach is named after its shark fin-shaped outcrop just out in the water.

This sandy beach is surrounded by looming sandstone cliffs, and while it may look small, there’s plenty of space here to give people privacy. The fact that the only way to access this beach is by a steep rocky path puts many of the crowds off, even though the path is only a third of a mile in length.

What’s there to do here?

There’s isn’t much in the way of facilities, but the natural wonders that you will find here are bound to keep you busy for quite a while. Don’t forget to also spend some time exploring the sea cave that has been carved out by the waves over the years.

Grayton Beach State Park, Florida

Florida is known for its picturesque beaches, but the Grayton Beach State Park, which sits on the Gulf Coast, is one of the state’s finest. This beach sprawls out for 400 acres, boasting clean white sands and a coastal dune lake that is packed with wildlife, along with fishing and paddling opportunities.

One of the features that really helps this beach to stand out is the fact that it is home to the first underwater museum in the country; the Underwater Museum of Art.

Wondering how that works?

There are seven unique sculptures placed 60 feet under the water, each one designed to help reef fish flourish. If you’re a certified diver, you can dive down and explore these sculptures close-up, while snorkelers can take a look at them from above.

Hanalei Bay, Hawaii

Is there a more special place than #hanaleibay? #canonfanphoto

A post shared by Abraham Kowitz (@abeskauaiphoto) on Jul 24, 2020 at 6:29pm PDT

You probably expected a Hawaiian beach to feature on this list – let’s face it, Hawaii is home to so many exquisite, Instagrammable beaches. However, one of the most impressive is Hanalei Bay, which can be found on the north shore of the island of Kauai.

Technically, Hanalei Bay is made up of a few different beach parks, all joining together to create a two-mile stretch of gorgeous beach. With a magnificent mountain range as a backdrop, Hanalei Bay looks stunning no matter where you’re standing.

Visit in the winter when the waves are larger for surfing, or in the summer if you prefer tranquil water for swimming. There are several other activities on offer here too, such as:

  • Paddle boarding
  • Kayaking
  • Swimming

Lindquist Beach, U.S. Virgin Islands

St. Thomas is known for its beautiful beaches, and while some of them may regularly be flanked by tourists, Lindquist Beach is a little lesser-known. It sits within the protected Smith Bay Park, which sprawls out for 21 acres and provides a lush backdrop that has earned this beach a prime spot in many television commercials.

This is a great beach for swimming – if you head to the west end, you’ll find a small bay where the water is even more shallow. Diving and snorkeling are great here as well, with the water being so rich in marine life. Simply relaxing on the sand is always a delight too, and you’ll notice that, when the sun is shining from a certain angle, the beach glimmers with a hint of pink.

There are only a few facilities here, which is why the beach still has such a laid-back ambience. In between the sea grape trees and the coconut grove are a couple of cabins that can be rented for parties, along with bathrooms and picnic tables.

Once you’ve had your fill of the beach, head into the heart of St. Thomas to indulge in some retail therapy. Be sure to stop off at the OROGOLD Virgin Islands Store – your skin will love a VIP facial after all of that time in the sun!

Topsail Beach, North Carolina

Located just off the coast of North Carolina, Topsail Beach is a part of Topsail Island, a 26-mile long barrier island that was previously only accessible by boat. After World War II, two bridges were built to connect the island to the mainland, allowing visitors to appreciate the magnificent beauty of the island’s untouched beaches.

With its white sand and sparkling waves, Topsail Beach is a photographer’s dream. For those seeking wildlife, there are several sites along the beach designed to encourage sea turtle breeding, allowing their dwindling population to flourish once again.

There are so many activities to try here, including:

  • Boat tours
  • Nature and wildlife tours
  • Kayaking
  • Parasailing
  • Paddle boarding
  • Windsurfing

There are also a handful of shops and cafes along the shore, giving you somewhere to go when you need some time away from the sun.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

Often referred to as one of the most beautiful places in the world, Cannon Beach is a small city in northwest Oregon that is known for its sandy stretch of coastline. Haystack Rock has become an iconic feature of the beach, and it’s also a haven for wildlife, including the tufted puffin.

Once you’ve filled your camera with photos of this exquisite beach, head on over to Hug Point for some truly Instagrammable shots of the waterfalls. Then, spend some time exploring the Ecola State Park; there are several paved walking trails here that provide some incredible viewpoints of your surroundings.

There are so many different stretches of sandy coastline to choose from in Virginia Beach, but most visitors tend to flock to those closest to the boardwalk. Sandbridge Beach tends to be lesser-known, meaning that you won’t have to deal with crowds. The waves here are also much calmer, making it a great beach for swimming.

This is quite a secluded beach, making it a great one for relaxing and unwinding. For those seeking a more rugged adventure, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the False Cape State Park are only a short distance away.

Don’t worry about this beach being too far out of town either – it’s just a few miles away from downtown Virginia Beach, meaning a short drive. Once you head back into town, pop into the OROGOLD Lynnhaven Mall store to treat your skin to a relaxing facial. You will also be able to enjoy product demonstrations and customized skin consultations.

Located in the Cupsogue Beach State Park in the Hamptons, Cupsogue Beach is a popular stretch of sand. Fortunately, since it sprawls out for 296 acres, this beach never gets too crowded.

Swimming is popular in these calm waters, and there are lifeguards on duty to keep everyone safe. The white sand beaches are a joy to stroll on, especially if you stop off for a home-cooked treat at the snack bar. If you would like to catch your own, this is where you will find some of the best saltwater bass fishing in all of the Hamptons.

There are plenty of facilities on this beach too, including showers and changing rooms.

Gooch’s Beach, Maine

The coastal area of Kennebunk itself is such an Instagrammable destination, but your camera won’t stop clicking once you reach Gooch’s Beach. Yes, there are two other gorgeous beaches to choose from (Middle Beach and Mother’s Beach) that make up this trio, but Gooch’s Beach is the largest and is home to some of the sandiest stretches of coastline.

The lifeguards on duty here make this a great beach for swimming, and the summer months see surfers flock to the shore. If you enjoy a spot of fishing, the Kennebunk River is where you will find plenty of bass.

Keep in mind that Gooch’s Beach is only 0.6 miles long, so it can get pretty crowded during peak tourist season.

Surfside Beach, Texas

View this post on Instagram

These are the rules for camping on the county/free beach. Remember there is no camping allowed within the four miles of the city limits of Surfside beaches. Looking to camp out on our beach this summer? ⛺️ Here's what you need to know: •There is no fee or permit to camp at or visit Follett's Island. •There are no designated camping spots to reserve. •Through September, portable toilet units are available for use along beach access points one and two. •Do not bring glass of any kind. •Dispose of your trash properly. •The state-protected sand dune areas are off-limits. •No person shall camp on any public beach for a period greater than 14 consecutive days. In an effort to minimize the risk of the COVID-19 virus, we ask that all park and beach visitors follow the social distancing guidelines placed by the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/prevention.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fcoronavirus%2F2019-ncov%2Fprepare%2Fprevention.html Find more info. about Follett's Island here: https://www.brazoriacountytx.gov/departments/parks-department/follet-s-island #camprules #follettsisland #surfsidebeachtexas

Texas is home to over 400 miles of coastline, meaning that there are plenty of Instagrammable beaches to be found in the Lone Star state. However, one of the best is Surfside Beach, often referred to simply as Surfside, which is less than an hour’s drive from Houston. Located in Brazoria County, Surfside Beach is known for being one of the cleanest in the area, even though it attracts large numbers of visitors.

As you can tell from its name, Surfside Beach is a hit with surfers. Its waves are consistent and are recognized as being some of the best in the state. There are also several surf shops within walking distance of the beach – perfect for picking up any surf gear you’ve forgotten to pack.

Since the beach is located so near to the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, the beach itself has become a paradise for many wildlife species. In fact, more than 200 species of birds have been seen here, with different ones visiting each season.

If you get hungry, there are a number of local restaurants to choose from a short walk away from the beach. Here are a few of the best:

  • Jetty Shack is one of the oldest restaurants here, with juicy burgers and ice cold beer
  • Red Snapper Inn is famous for its fresh seafood
  • La Taqueria de Surfside serves up street tacos, and sits just behind Surfin’ Rita’s Daiquiris To Go – the perfect combination
  • Hammond’s Shaved Ice & Grill is another street food venue with barbecue brisket sandwiches, chopped brisket tacos, and icy cold treats that are so refreshing on a hot day

Singing Beach, Massachusetts

View this post on Instagram

Singing Beach, Massachusetts While some people may make the trip to Manchester-by-the-Sea to see where the movie was filmed, others come for the more curious Singing Beach: If you shuffle your feet in the dry sand you will hear a sing-song-like squeak. It’s wildly popular with families in summer, but from mid-October to mid-April, expect to hear more barking than singing, as it’s the beach’s official dog-friendly season.

A post shared by Lizzy Hunter (@6figuregrandma) on Jul 30, 2020 at 12:34am PDT

This 0.5 mile long Massachusetts beach, which can be found in Manchester-by-the-Sea, has quite an unusual name.

Want to know the story behind it?

If you shuffle your feet along the dry sand, you’ll hear it make a sing-song-sounding squeak.

This beautiful sandy beach is one of the most popular on the North Shore, but still remains so tranquil and serene. The soft white sand here is perfect for a leisurely stroll, especially if you time your visit for around sunset. If you’d like to get a bit more active, try your hand at some snorkeling or tube floating.

There are a few facilities here, including a snack bar with delicious icy treats on hot days, showers, and changing areas.

The USA is home to some incredible beaches, with every coastal state having at least one that they can be truly proud of. No matter where on the coastline you are, you’re never too far away from a picturesque beach that is more than deserving of an Instagram post!

Secret Paradise: 8 Secluded Beaches to Visit Around the World

Beach in Greece

You probably aren’t planning to go jet-setting around the world just yet, but, once people do start traveling again, they will most likely be seeking out the more secluded areas, rather than crowded cities.

So, if you’ve been planning a post-Coronavirus vacation, here are eight of the most isolated and hidden beaches in the world to visit.

Guitar Island Beach, Andaman, India

You would think that an island shaped like a guitar would easily grab the attention of tourists, but the uninhabited Guitar Island is rarely frequented by visitors.

The island is only accessible by boat, and, since there is no infrastructure at all on the island, only day trips are allowed. While it may take you a while to actually get to Guitar Island Beach, your time spent there will make the effort more than worthwhile.

What’s there to do on Guitar Island Beach?

Although there may not be any restaurants or accommodation on the island, there is still plenty to do on Guitar Island Beach.

Simply strolling around the pristine landscape is a joy in itself, or, for something a little more different, you could try a sea walk in the shallow waters, checking out the amazing array of coral and aquatic life. Snorkelling is another good way to check out the world that lies under the water.

What’s there to do nearby?

The only way to access Guitar Island is from a place called Long Island, which is another exotic paradise worth exploring. The white sand beach here is spectacular, while the mangroves are also fun to adventure through.

Just like Guitar Island, Long Island is great for water sports, and is also a good starting point for some island hopping to the other nearby islands, such as:

  • Merk’s Bay
  • Button Islands

Diaporos Island, Sithonia, Greece

Amazing view of #diaporosisland and #bluelagoon !!! The beautiful beach that you can only reach by boat! . . . #vourvourou #boatrentalvourvourou #visitchalkidiki #explorehalkidiki #diaporosisland

The largest of a nine-island archipelago, Diaporos Island is small, measuring just one and a half square miles. It sits in the Singitic Gulf in northern Greece, and while it may now contain several private holiday homes, along with newly-built luxury villas, the beaches here still remain a secret from the masses, making them perfect for some rest and relaxation in isolation.

What’s there to do on the beaches of Diaporos Island?

The beaches here boast crystal clear water, making them the perfect snorkelling spots. The water here also remains calm throughout the year, meaning that a visit in the winter would be just as enjoyable as a summer vacation.

What’s there to do nearby?

If you rent a private boat, or even manage to lay your hands on a canoe, you can spend some time exploring the secret coves around Diaporos Island, with these being surrounded with pine tree-lined sandy beaches.

Make your way to the shallow water between Diaporos Island and Agios Isidoros to stumble upon the Blue Lagoon – an area of bright turquoise water that looks like a huge swimming pool.

El Saler Beach, Valencia, Spain

Fin de semana perfecto para dar una vuelta en barca por La Albufera #elsaler #valencia

A post shared by El Saler, Valencia (@elsalerbeach) on Feb 15, 2019 at 4:31am PST

It only takes about half an hour to get to El Saler Beach from the heart of Valencia, Spain, but a visit here will make you feel as though you have traveled to a different world.

Stretching out for just over three miles, the beach is located in the Albufera National Park, which provides so much diversity when it comes to your backdrop.

What’s there to do on El Saler Beach?

With dunes lining the beach, the sand is surprisingly well-sheltered from the strong winds that this area often experiences, making it a great spot for some sunbathing (don’t forget to wear sunscreen!).

However, those strong winds are still around further out in the sea, making this a great spot for windsurfing.

Those who would prefer to stay on land can try their hand at some cycling, taking the eight mile route to Albufera Lake. Your reward will be the chance to dip in a beautiful freshwater lagoon, which is separated from the salty sea by Mediterranean pine trees growing amongst sandy dunes.

What’s there to do nearby?

Valencia is a port city that is famous for its arts and sciences. While the city is home to several other gorgeous beaches, this is a great place to soak up some culture – from the planetarium to the interactive museums to the futuristic architecture, Valencia is a city well worth exploring.

Kumimi Beach, Molokai, Hawaii

With Hawaii being such a big name in the travel industry, it’s hard to imagine that the islands have any hidden beaches left, but Kumimi Beach remains relatively undiscovered.

Sitting on Molokai’s East Shore, Kumimi Beach is also referred to as Murphey Beach and 20 Mile Marker Beach, and visitors often find themselves alone on the 20 mile stretch of sand here.

What’s there to do on Kumimi Beach?

There are no facilities here, making it an ideal beach for some true rest and relaxation.

While the waters here are generally quite calm, the lack of any lifeguards means that visitors need to take extra care when exploring this beach.

What’s there to do nearby?

Molokai is home to numerous attractions. If you want more beach time, head to Papohaku Beach Park, one of the largest beaches in Hawaii. Alternatively, if you want to hike through some lush greenery, head to Halawa Valley, also on the eastern end of the island.

Of course, island hopping around Hawaii is relatively easy. Head to Oahu for a wide range of tourist attractions, the Big Island for its diverse terrain and active volcanoes, and Maui for even more spectacular beaches, as well as an exclusive OROGOLD boutique.

Bai Dai Beach, Vietnam

Located on the island of Phu Quoc, Bai Dai Beach remains a secret even to many locals. Although the beach is still currently undeveloped, some experts predict that it won’t be long before this hot spot is discovered by the wider masses, making now the perfect time to visit.

What’s there to do on Bai Dai Beach?

Flat and sandy, and with a great break, Bai Dai Beach is a must-visit for surfers. There are a handful of vendors dotted along the beach that offer watersport rental facilities, with the waters here being perfect even for beginners. Numerous shallow areas mean that children can safely swim here too.

If you would prefer a more relaxing activity, enjoy a meal at one of the fresh seafood restaurants that dot the coast, with the catch of the day being cooked up in a simple, Vietnamese tradition.

What’s there to do nearby?

The undeveloped minimalism that Bai Dai Beach offers hugely contrasts with the rest of Phu Quoc. In recent years, the island has rapidly developed into a major tourist destination, and you will find everything from sprawling resorts and amusements parks to glitzy casinos and golf courses here.

Ibo Island, Mozambique

View this post on Instagram

Ibo Island is one of the Quirimbas Archipelago's islands located in the North of Mozambique. It is packed with history and natural charm. The island was dramatically affected by cyclone Kenneth, however, efforts have been in place to rebuild and restore this hidden gem. Don't miss out on this beauty; it is on the road to recovery and already taking in visitors🇲🇿🇲🇿 📍: Ibo Island 📸: @brunopedro.mz =========================== Share your #Mozambique views, use #instagramablemz for a feature.

One of only a handful of inhabited islands in the Quirimbas Archipelago, Ibo Island has a reputation for offering one of the most unique beach experiences in the world. It boasts pristine and atmospheric beaches, with numerous secluded spots to choose from.

What’s there to do on Ibo Island?

The beaches on Ibo Island are a little unusual – they aren’t there all the time. Instead, this island is home to an amazing tidal beach, meaning that it appears and disappears at different times each day.

The only way to reach this beach is by boat, and there are plenty of locals on hand to help you organize your trip, to ensure that you time it in a way that actually enables you to see the beach.

What’s there to do nearby?

Ibo Island offers a relaxed and laid-back way of life. There are barely any cars on the island, and culture and tradition still plays an important role here.

Those who enjoy history can tour some of the island’s historical sites, while nature-lovers can try swimming with the dolphins and turtles, or checking out some of the rare birds that live here.

The wholesome local cuisine is a must-try too – fresh seafood is served up daily, along with locally-picked coconuts, homegrown vegetables and so many other spicy, flavorful elements.

If you’re looking for somewhere truly remote, then Macushla Beach, which is located in the Hinchinbrook Island National Park, is the place for you.

The only way to access this beach is by a private or charter boat, meaning that it very rarely gets busy.

What’s there to do on Macushla Beach?

The views here are extraordinary – surrounded by lush, green forests, the beach offers up panoramas of the sparkling water lapping the island’s coastline, along with the other islands nearby. The picnic area here is considered to be one of the most scenic in the world!

Biodiversity is huge here, with Hinchinbrook Island a part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. A trip out into the water will reward you with an amazing reef ecosystem, along with a wide network of creeks and tributaries to explore.

If you’re in the mood for a hike, there are two trails that you can take from here:

  • North Shepherd Bay Track – this will take you to Cape Richards, as well as the island’s most northern tip
  • South Shepherd Bay Track – this leads you on a path that snakes its way through the Kirkville Hills rainforests, ending at the tranquil South Shepherd Bay

What’s there to do nearby?

The two places that connect Macushla Beach to the mainland are Cardwell and Lucinda.

Cardwell is a beautiful tropical coastal town, with waterfalls, natural pools, and forests to explore. Lucinda has similar features in terms of natural diversity, but there are also a couple of museums here worth checking out:

  • The Maritime Museum of Townsville
  • The Museum of Tropical Queensland

White and golden sand beaches have featured several times on this list, but here’s one that’s a little more unique…

As you can guess from its name, the Playa Negra features black sand, a phenomenon that is caused when lava and other volcanic materials are broken down over the course of centuries by the ocean. Although there are a few other spots of black sand on the island, this is the beach that has the highest concentration of it, giving the scenery a beautiful contrast.

What’s there to do on Playa Negra?

Playa Negra is an undeveloped beach, so while you won’t find an array of facilities here, sitting back and taking in the gleaming black sand is an experience in itself.

There are cliffs to explore and other nearby beaches you can walk to, including Playa Grande and Esperanza Beach.

What’s there to do nearby?

Vieques is known for its natural beauty – this attracts so much wildlife, much of which can be seen at the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge.

The island’s Bioluminescent Bay, where the microorganisms in the water emit a greenish glow, is also another popular tourist spot.

There are plenty of other beaches to visit around the island too, along with museums for a dose of culture and history.

There’s nothing quite like taking some time out from modern day life to relax on a beautiful, secluded, sandy beach. Whether this may be in Vietnam, Greece, Hawaii, or anywhere else, these eight beaches promise a memorable experience.

365 Days of Summer: 12 Sun-Soaked Destinations for Each Month of the Year

Boat on water with fish underneath

Got the winter blues?

That’s easy to fix…

Simply pack your bags, pick the month that you’re currently in from the list below, and book yourself a getaway to the corresponding destination.

January: Mexico

Although the weather in Mexico varies quite significantly between each region, January is usually the driest month across the entire country, making it a great time to visit. The temperature in January is still warm, but not unbearably hot, and you also won’t need to deal with the hoards of tourists that flock to Mexico later in the year.

Wondering where in Mexico you should go?

Here are some of the country’s best spots:

  • Jalisco – home to tequila and mariachi
  • Cozumel – this island is home to some of the best diving spots in all of Mexico
  • Coyoacán – located in Mexico City, this district is wonderfully bohemian in nature, with cobblestone streets, numerous sidewalk cafes and plenty of art
  • Puebla – this historic city is famous for its colonial architecture, culinary heritage and traditional pottery

If you need a skincare fix while you’re away, you will find an OROGOLD store in each of the Mexican locations listed above.

February: Goa

Located on the southwestern coast of India, Goa, for a long time, used to be a Portuguese colony, giving this state an intoxicating blend of Indian and Portuguese heritage. Goa is famous for its sun, sand and sea, along with its incredible seafood and its love for spirituality.

With so many new luxury hotels and villas now operating all over the state, Goa is a great place to go for a relaxing, indulgent vacation.

Why February?

Because December and January tend to be pretty busy in Goa, but March is when the waters become rougher and the temperatures more humid, making February the ideal month to visit.

March: Dubai

If you haven’t yet visited Dubai, make this the year you do so. Dubai really is unlike anywhere else in the world – its futuristic architecture, unbelievably large shopping malls, and general opulence and glamor really need to be experienced.

Of course, Dubai has a lot more going for it than just its city life…

Venture further afield for everything from camel safaris to camping under the stars, giving you an authentic taste of life in the desert.

Dubai experiences warm temperatures throughout the year, with November to April being its winter months. While this may be the case, this is still the best time to visit the city, with the weather being comfortably warm and dry.

April: Thailand

Ok, so Thailand in April can get pretty hot, even uncomfortably so.

So, why the recommendation?

Because April also happens to be the month of Thai New Year, as well as the Songkran festival, which marks the beginning of the summer season. Otherwise known as the national water fight, the festival runs for five days across the country, and features friendly water fights along with plenty of street parties.

If this doesn’t sound like your type of thing, there are many other places in Thailand where you can head to in April for some rest and relaxation. Try Railay for some truly epic beaches, which you can only reach via a 20 minute boat ride from Krabi, or, if you would prefer tropical yoga and Buddhist temples, head to Koh Samui.

Temple in Thailand in the mountains

May: Peru

With Peru’s rainy season ending in March, and the busy tourist season beginning in June, May is the perfect time of year to visit.

Most visit Peru for its awe-inspiring natural features, with the Amazon rainforest being a must-see for all visitors. This part of the rainforest is believed to be the most prolific and diverse section, and is also one of the most bio-diverse parts of the world.

Peru is also where you will find the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, another area well worth a visit. If you are feeling adventurous, give the Inca Trail a try – this four-day hike is famed for being one of the finest trails on the entire planet.

June: Athens

Greece’s summer season begins in June, meaning that you are likely to experience peak tourist rates when booking your trip, but the overall experience will be more than worth it. The capital of Greece, as well as the heart of Ancient Greece, Athens has an amazing history behind it, with the city dotted with numerous 5th century landmarks that are open for public exploration. The most famous would be the Parthenon, a former temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena.

In addition to checking out all of the historic architecture around the city, you will find plenty of other things to do in Athens too, such as:

  • Visiting the National Gardens, featuring 16 hectares of landscaped grounds along with a small zoo
  • Checking out the Varvakios Agora, a food market featuring local vendors from around the country
  • Hiking to the top of Lycabettus Hill, one of Athens’ highest peaks
  • Touring some of the city’s museums, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens and the Museum of Cycladic Art
  • Watching a movie at Cine Paris, one of the city’s 90 outdoor film venues

July: New York

If you want to experience the summer months in one of the most important cities in the world, then head to New York in July. Yes, the temperatures can sometimes get a little too warm, but the thunderstorms that you will experience will also help to cool you back down. However, usually, the New York in July is comfortably balmy, making it a pleasure to explore the city’s many sights.

Even if you have never been to New York before, you are probably well aware of some of its major attractions. Everything from the Empire State Building to the Statue of Liberty to the Brooklyn Bridge are famous world-over, but, no matter how many times you may have seen these landmarks in the movies, there is nothing quite like experiencing them for yourself.

If you’re a first-time visitor to the city, the best way to begin exploring it is by signing up for a guided tour. Yes, this may seem a little cheesy at first, but this brief tour will take you to areas that you can then delve deeper into in your own time.

Does your skin not handle the heat too well?

Don’t worry, OROGOLD has several stores in New York, where you will be able to enjoy some product demonstrations, and even a VIP facial – anything your skin needs to be happy and healthy again.

August: Northern Spain

Street in Northern Spain

Some parts of Spain can seem stiflingly hot in August, with many areas pretty much shutting down at this time. Due to the heat and the inability to comfortably go about day-to-day activities, this is when most people take their annual leave, with some companies closing down for the entire month.

However, since the temperatures in the north of Spain are just about perfect in August, this area continues on as normal, making this month a great time to visit.

Not sure exactly where you should go?

Just about anywhere near to the Atlantic coastline will be ideal, such as:

  • San Sebastian – if you consider yourself a foodie, this food-obsessed resort down will seem like paradise to you. Make sure that you give pintxo, the local version of tapas, a try
  • Oviedo – famous for its medieval town and its 9th century Gothic cathedral, this historic city will teach you so much about the region’s past
  • Santiago de Compostela – a small city with narrow, winding alleyways, quaint architecture and a rich sense of culture

September: Croatia

If you want to avoid the crowds, then September is a great month to visit Croatia, since this is when the summer season is just about winding down. However, the temperatures are still warm, but make sure that you visit during the first half, rather than the second, of September.

Why?

Because, towards the end of the month, many of the seasonal attractions, including island bars and restaurants, begin to close down for the year.

Don’t know much about Croatia?

It is located in Southeast Europe, next to Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia and a couple of other countries. Unlike some of the other destinations on this list, Croatia may not seem like an immediately obvious place to visit, but this country really does have so much to offer.

Not only is it packed with stunning pebbled beaches, atmospheric Roman ruins, sprawling national parks and soaring peaks, but you will also find quirky museums, trendy cafes, and a fascinating culture.

Plus, if you happen to be a Game of Thrones fan, many parts of the country will instantly seem familiar to you, from the city of Dubrovnik to the Fortress of Klis.

October: Hawaii

For the best chances of dry weather, visit Hawaii in early October, when it is still pleasantly warm, but before the rainy season hits. Of course, the specific island you pick will influence your experience too – Big Island tends to be the driest, while Kauai experiences the most rainfall.

When people think of Hawaii, they imagine palm-lined beaches, lush vegetation and a unique culture – all of this could not be more true. The islands are synonymous with paradise, and there are few that would disagree.

Can’t decide which island to visit?

Try Maui, which is consistently ranked as the best island in the world. In addition to the island’s rich natural beauty and amazing cuisine, this is also where you will find an OROGOLD store that will cater to all of your skin’s tropical needs.

November: The Canary Islands

View of Canary Islands beach at sunset

The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago that lies just off the coast of north-west Africa. There are eight main islands here, and several smaller ones, each dominated by their rugged, volcanic landscape.

Each island has a distinct personality to offer, with some of the most popular being:

  • Tenerife – the largest of the islands, Tenerife is also the most developed, and is home to the second-largest Carnival in the world
  • Fuerteventura – this island is one of the least-developed, with a desert-like landscape that makes wind-sports especially popular
  • Gran Canaria – this round island is packed with so much biodiversity, making it perfect for those who enjoy exploring the great outdoors

December: Australia

Australia experiences their summer towards the end of the year, which is why many choose to visit during these months. Of course, the temperatures you experience will depend on where about in the country you choose to visit.

If you’re seeking out the hustle and bustle of city life, there are plenty of major cities to pick from, including Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide.

Of course, many prefer to experience Australia’s wilder side, with the Daintree Rainforest, which is around 180 million years old, never being a disappointment. Fraser Island, with its 75-mile long beach, is also popular, as are the white beaches on the Whitsunday Islands, which are located just off the famous Great Barrier Reef.

For those of you who prefer to relax by enjoying some fine wines, Australia has you covered there too, with this country producing some of the best wines in the world. Check out the Barossa Valley for some big-name vineyards, including Wolf Blass and Penfolds, or head to Margaret River for some truly exquisite reds.

If you’ve just about had enough of the winter cold now, then why not treat yourself to a warm getaway? These 12 destinations each have so much to offer, not only in terms of warm temperatures, but also history, culture, natural beauty, and everything else that makes a vacation truly memorable.

6 Adventure-Filled Destinations for Adrenaline Junkies

Cage diving with sharks

Looking for an adventure to really get your heart pumping?

Here are six destinations that are guaranteed to thrill all of you adrenaline junkies out there.

Mount Everest, Nepal/Tibet

Mount Everest Base Camp

Just about everyone has heard of Mount Everest. After all, sitting at over 29,000 feet, it’s the highest peak in the world!

While only highly experienced climbers should even consider attempting to scale the peak, there are numerous other treks around the mountain that will still provide a truly awe-inspiring experience.

The mountain itself sits at the border of Nepal and China, with its south slope belonging to Nepal and its north slope belonging to China. There are three other record-breaking peaks situated around Everest, along with 14 other peaks that all reach to at least 7,000 meters. These all make up the incredible Mount Everest Natural Scenery Area.

The best place to begin your adventure is at the Everest Base Camp. The location of the base camp recently changed in January 2019, being moved about 4km north to protect the area’s delicate ecosystem. The old base camp is now a part of the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve, which belongs to China.

There are several charming mountain towns located a short distance away from Everest, many of which offer short hikes that last just a few days.

Of course, hiking isn’t your only option – Everest is packed with numerous other adventurous activities too, such as:

  • Water rafting
  • Yak safaris
  • Heli-skiing
  • Mountain biking
  • Sky diving

One thing to keep in mind when planning your trip…

Several permits are needed to visit the area, not just for the Everest Base Camp but also for Tibet itself. Make sure that you begin organizing all of your paperwork a good few months in advance, as you do not want to experience any problems once you actually get there.

Cape Town, South Africa

Table Mountain, South Africa

The bustling, cosmopolitan metropolis of Cape Town attracts more than two and a half million visitors each year. The capital of South Africa, Cape Town boasts a captivating history and culture, as well as stunning scenery.

While many tend to spend the majority of their visit indulging in city-based activities, Cape Town has so much more to offer when you venture a little further afield…

For starters, Cape Town is home to the largest population of great white sharks in the world. If these majestic creatures don’t get your heart racing, there isn’t much else that will!

Want to see the sharks up close?

Try cage-diving, a hugely popular activity in the city. You will enter into a cage, which will then be lowered into the sea, with the cage being your only form of protection from the great whites. A form of bait is often used to attract the sharks, ensuring that these beauties are spotted during each and every expedition.

Surfing is another popular activity in Cape Town. This may not seem very exciting or unusual at first, but, considering the fact that you will be riding waves with great white sharks around you, the experience suddenly becomes all the more thrilling.

Of course, Table Mountain needs a mention too…

This flat-topped mountain is one of Cape Town’s most iconic landmarks, looming up over the city. There is a cable car to take you to the top, and several hiking trails to enjoy too, but, if you really want to get your blood pumping, give abseiling a try. You don’t need any experience for this, but you will definitely need to be courageous in order to step off the side of a sheer cliff, with the sparkling ocean beneath you.

Queenstown, New Zealand

Paraglider over Queenstown, New Zealand

With Queenstown being known as the adventure capital of the world, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there are numerous adrenaline-fuelling activities that can be enjoyed here.

Just the thought of some of these will be enough to get your heart racing, with these activities designated only for the very brave:

  • Paragliding – launch off from the Skyline Gondola and sail through the sky, enjoying panoramic views of Lake Wakaptipu, along with the rest of Queenstown
  • Canyoning – there are a few locations in Queenstown where you can give canyoning a try, an adventure that will see you doing everything from ziplining over ravines to sliding down waterfalls
  • Skydiving – Queenstown is home to some of the best skydiving facilities in the world, making this the place to give the sport a try. Heights vary from 9,000 feet to 15,000 feet, depending on how courageous you are feeling
  • Canyon Swinging – this unusual activity will have you jumping off a cliff that looms over 100 meters high, before free-falling down, past a cliff face, until you are just above a river, after which you will then swing across a canyon
  • River Surfing – if you love to surf in the ocean, give river surfing a try. The Kawarau River is the best place for this, with whirl pools, rock jumps and fast rapids to contend with
  • Whitewater Rafting – again, the Kawarau River, with its immense rapids, is a prime spot for whitewater rafting, as is the Shotover River. The rapids here are grades four and five, offering up a thrilling experience along with some fantastic views
  • Flyboarding – this involves being strapped to a board before a hose emits a high pressure from a jetski that propels you high above the water. While you don’t need experience for this activity, you definitely do need to be a strong swimmer

Those are just a few of the adventures that you will be able to enjoy in Queenstown, making it easy to see why the city is so popular with those seeking a once-in-a-lifetime thrill.

Maui, Hawaii

Surfing a big wave in Hawaii

While the tropical islands of Hawaii are often considered to be a prime spot for some rest and relaxation, there is plenty of adventure to be found here too.

Many flock to Maui simply for a visit to Pe’ahi, which can be found on the island’s north shore.

Wondering what makes Pe’ahi so special?

This is where you will find the biggest wave break in Hawaii, if not the world. In fact, the waves here are so impressive that they are nicknamed Jaws, with these waves often exceeding 60 feet in height. It should come as no surprise that this is where several of the big names in surfing come to ride the waves, especially between the months of December and March, when the waves are at their largest.

You are probably wondering how you would even paddle out to a wave so big…

The answer is – you don’t. Tow-in surfing is the way to do things here, in which a jet ski will tow you over to the break before dropping you off. While many surfers have begun paddling their way out to the waves in recent years, this is something that should not be attempted unless you are highly confident in your surfing skills.

Once you have tried your hand at surfing Jaws, the fun doesn’t need to end there…

The islands of Hawaii are home to numerous other adventure opportunities, such as:

    • Hiking into the crater of the Haleakala Volcano
    • Signing up for a Hawaiian lava boat tour, which will take you up-close to an erupting volcano
    • Horse riding on Kohala Mountain
    • Snorkelling with manta rays, or snorkelling inside the Molokini Crater
    • Ziplining over the Kualoa Private Reserve

Of course, while you are island-hopping around Hawaii, don’t forget to stop off at the OROGOLD store at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu. All of that adrenaline may be fun for you, but it can play havoc on your skin, which is why your skin would definitely appreciate one of our VIP facials, along with some expert skincare advice.

Leon, Nicaragua

Volcano in Nicaragua

Located in western Nicaragua, Leon is famous for its historic architecture, incredible landscapes and fascinating culture. This is the second largest city in Nicaragua, and while there may be plenty of city-based attractions to occupy yourself with here, you will also encounter a few heart-pumping experiences.

The most unique would be the sport of volcano boarding. While there are a few destinations around the world that offer up this unique activity, it has become really popular in Leon, most notably at the Cerro Negro Volcano. Compared to the other volcanos in Central America, Cerro Negro is relatively new, having popped up just 160 years ago, making it the youngest volcano in the region.

Wondering what volcano boarding actually involves?

It’s simple…

All that is required is a handmade board, usually crafted from a few pieces of plywood. You either sit or stand on your board (depending on how brave you are feeling), and then go shooting down the black sand of the 2,400 foot active volcano. The way in which the sand is packed in pretty loosely is what makes Cerro Negro so perfect for this sport, with participants reaching speeds of up to 65 miles per hour.

If you are still needing another dose of adrenaline after that, there are a few other activities that you can indulge in here too. Try swapping your volcano board for a surfboard before heading to Popoyo, a popular surfing location. There are two reefs here, with the inner one being slightly easier than the outer reef. If you want to attempt surfing the outer reef, you may need to arrange for a jet ski to tow you in.

Prefer volcanos to the ocean?

There are several hiking trails criss-crossing over Nicaragua’s volcanos, each one varying in difficulty level. They range from short one-day hikes to longer three-day hikes, each one guaranteeing some of the best views you will have ever experienced.

Shaanxi, China

Mountains in Shaanxi, China

Located in north-west China, the province of Shaanxi is famous for being the starting point of the legendary Silk Road. This is an area that dates back thousands of years, and there are numerous monuments and landmarks dotted around Shaanxi that are testament to its intriguing past.

So, what makes Shaanxi so perfect for adrenaline junkies?

The fact that this region of China is home to the most dangerous hike in the world.

The trail, which is more like a plank of wood winding its way around a sheer cliff side, more than 2000 feet up in the air, can be found at Mount Huashan. The mountain plays a significant role in local customs and traditions, which is why you will find numerous temples, shrines and teahouses dotted around the landscape.

The hiking path itself dates back centuries. It was built by pilgrims and monks, with this building process taking around 3000 years to complete.

The path stretches out for 12km, climbing around 1,800 meters along the way. When you first set off, the hike may not seem that treacherous, but, once you begin climbing the steep staircases that have been cut into the cliff face, you will soon see why this hike is named the most dangerous in the world.

Many parts of the walk need to be traversed by climbing vertical ladders, also dug into the mountain. You will often have a couple of steel bars or some chains to use as support, but there is nothing below to catch you if you fall. It goes withotu saying that quite a few people have fallen to their deaths here, with locals estimating this figure to be around 100 people per year.

Don’t worry if you find that you lose your nerve once you actually check out this precarious path. There is a cable car that will take you from Huayin City up to the summit of Mount Huashan, meaning that you can still enjoy its spectacular views.

There are so many destinations around the world that offer up an adrenaline-filled experience, but these six are, without a doubt, among the best. Whether you want to ride the most dangerous waves in the world, or hike the most dangerous trail in the world, these locations will definitely not disappoint.

Where to Stay

The Four Seasons Hotel Washington D.C. is always a popular choice over Thanksgiving weekend, meaning that you will need to book yourself a room as soon as possible.

Why is this hotel especially popular for the holidays?

Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center in Oahu, Hawaii

The entrance to the Polynesian Cultural Centre in Oahu, Hawaii

Located on the northern shore of Oahu, the Polynesian Cultural Center is a Polynesian-themed living museum and theme park sprawled out across a lush, 42 acre tropical haven. With everything from island villages to explore to a traditional dinner to feast on, this is a great place to really immerse yourself in authentic Polynesian life.

Island Villages
The Polynesian Cultural Center boasts six distinct villages, each one depicting a Pacific culture. The Samoa village tends to be the most popular, as the demonstrations here are always fun, from learning how to make fire by rubbing two sticks together to using a small pebble to crack open a coconut. The Islands of Aotearoa village features Maori natives, complete with their unusual facial tattoos, with tattooed warriors performing their native war dance. At the Tonga village, you will be treated to a presentation of Tonga drumming, while learning about the intricate sitting dance, while the Fiji village boasts an incredible six storey high Fijian temple, open for the public to explore. The Tahiti village is another one that focuses on dance, and, finally, the Hawaii village will teach you so much more about true Hawaiian life.

The Luau and Dinner
A luau is a quintessential part of Pacific life, and the Polynesian Cultural Center’s Ali’i Luau has won numerous awards. Held in their gorgeous outdoor grounds, surrounded by tropical gardens and waterfalls, the luau includes a Royal Court procession, along with musical and cultural entertainment, followed by an authentic Hawaiian feast. This dinner is often the highlight of the day for many visitors, as the food that you will eat here has been cooked in the most traditional ways possible. From the magnificent imu, which is pork that has been cooked in an underground oven, to steamed tropical fish to poke, this is a great opportunity to try some of the islands’ most famous dishes.

Ha: Breath of Life
After the dinner and luau has ended, the Polynesian Cultural Center hosts an evening performance titled Ha: Breath of Life. This performance tells a symbolic local story, and is filled with Polynesian dances, special effects and blazing fire knives, all of which is put together by more than 100 Polynesian natives. The story itself is one of triumph and tragedy, and will no doubt take you through a range of emotions as you watch the show. With so many publications showering this performance with endless praise, this is an evening that you will definitely not want to miss.

Other Activities
In addition to the activities mentioned above, there is plenty else to do at the Polynesian Cultural Center. There are eight “Go Native” activities for visitors to try, from learning how to climb up a coconut tree to throwing a spear, all of which embody native Polynesian life. There is also everything from canoe rides along a tropical lagoon to a tram tour to take part in, so be sure to leave yourself plenty of time when visiting the center.

While local Hawaiian life can be experienced all over Hawaii’s islands, the Polynesian Cultural Center focuses on Polynesia as a whole. From the many different islands that are dotted around the Pacific to the unique culture that has arisen in the area over the years, this is a tourist attraction that everybody should visit.

Get Your Kitty Fix in Lanai City, Hawaii

Cat lying on a grassy ground

The Hawaiian island of Lanai is home to a number of different one-of-a-kind attractions, but there is an unusual one that has been attracting a record number of visitors. Situated within a 25,000 square foot property, the Lanai Cat Sanctuary is home to 500 rescued cats, and is open to visitors for a few hours each day.

The Lanai Cat Sanctuary
The Lanai Cat Sanctuary is a unique one, because not only is it located on one of the most remote islands in the United States, but it also has no electricity, meaning that those who run it need to be quite innovative in their methods of raising these cats. It opened in 2008, with 425 cats at the time who were calling it home. The sanctuary boasts everything that a cat could desire, from large huts and trees to climb on to patches of lush grass where they can lay out and enjoy the sun. There are absolutely no cages or barriers within the sanctuary, leaving the cats free to roam around and make the most of the incredible space that they live in.

Rehabilitation and Neutering
One of the major issues that the wild birds of Hawaii face are the many feral cats that roam the islands and these cats have had quite the detrimental impact on native bird populations over the years. The sanctuary practices a neuter and release program, whereby each cat that they take in is neutered, as this will help to prevent Hawaii’s feline population from continuing to grow at uncontrollable rates. The sanctuary also traps and rehabilitates feral cats, while providing ongoing medical care to those who need it, and socializing those who have lived on their own their whole lives.

Cat looking at woman carrying her

Visiting the Lanai Cat Sanctuary
The Lanai Cat Sanctuary attracts a few thousand visitors each year, some of whom travel the world just to visit this incredible place. The sanctuary is located just a mile from Lana’i Airport, making it easy and convenient to access. Open daily from 10am to 3pm, visitors are able to play and interact with the cats, which helps the cats to become accustomed to human contact. Visitors can also spend time brushing the cats, and are allowed to bring in treats and toys when they visit.

Adopting or Fostering a Cat from the Sanctuary
As you would imagine, many visitors to the sanctuary end up falling in love with a cat, but each cat that is here is able to be fostered or adopted, so many visitors end up taking one home with them. The sanctuary arranges for air travel for the cats, and, each year, around 30 cats are adopted by visitors to the sanctuary, making room for more feral cats to be taken in. For those who would like to support the sanctuary but are not able to adopt a cat themselves, the sanctuary offers an adopt-in-place program for a monthly fee, with the money raised going towards the running costs of the sanctuary, as well as the never-ending medical bills that are accumulated.

While there are numerous animal sanctuaries to be found all over the world, there are none that are quite like the Lanai Cat Sanctuary. Rather than seeing unhappy animals cooped up in cages, this is a sanctuary that really allows the cats to be themselves, and for those who do not end up being adopted, they are still able to spend their lives living in happiness on one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

Feel the Lava at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Lava from Kilauea Volcano flowing into sea

Located on Big Island, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was established on the 1st of August 1916, and is home to both the Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, both of which are active. For those who have been hoping to have the opportunity to see Hawaii’s volcanoes up-close while visiting the island, spending a day at this national park is definitely a must-do.

The Kilauea Volcano
While the Mauna Loa volcano may be the largest volcano on the planet, it is the Kilauea volcano that is the most famous in Hawaii, because even though it is the youngest of the five volcanoes on Big Island, it is also the most active, and has been erupting continuously since 1983. A visit to the Kilauea Visitor Center will teach you more about this, with a 25 minute film to introduce you to the park, as well as updates on the latest eruptions. You can also schedule guided tours and ranger talks from here, which are useful if you would like to learn more about the volcano and the park itself.

The Jagger Museum
For those who would like to learn more about volcanoes and how they work, a visit to the Jagger Museum, which is situated within the park, is a must. This museum is devoted to volcanology, and has a number of exhibits that are dedicated to the volcanoes on the island, showing you how they developed and how they have managed to influence and change the landscape around them. The museum also has an overlook just outside it, and, from here, you will be able to enjoy an extremely advantageous viewpoint over the Halema’uma’u Crater, which is another one that has been frequently active.

Inside the Thurston Lava Tube

Thurston Lava Tube
There are not many places in the world where you can actually walk through lava, but the Thurston Lava Tube is one of these. This tube was created hundreds of years ago, when lava flowed through the area, but was only discovered in 1913 by a local newspaper publisher. The tube measures 600 feet long, with its height ranging from 10 to 30 feet, and appears in quite a surreal way out of a lush green forest.

Leave No Trace
One of the principals that is encouraged at all national parks is to leave no trace, meaning that you should leave the area in the same way that you found it. This is especially important at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, as this area has already been quite affected by tourists, such as with the lava stalactites that used to hang in the Thurston Lava Tube, but which were then taken away by tourists as souvenirs. While it may be tempting to remove a small amount of lava, or anything else you may find, to take home with you, this is not only detrimental to the environment, but is also illegal under federal law.

The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is definitely a must-visit for those who are visiting Big Island for the first time, as it will provide you with a unique glimpse into the island’s one-of-a-kind ecology. From the incredible Kilauea Volcano to the surreal Thurston Lava Tube, there is so much to see and do around the park, so be sure to leave yourself with a full day in which you can thoroughly explore it.

Exploring the Napali Coast

A stunning coastal range on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, the Napali Coast stretches out for fifteen miles, and offers up some of the best views in all of the state. Located on the island’s North Shore, this traffic-free stretch of land is not the easiest to access, which only makes it even more of a Hawaiian hidden gem.

Kalalau Trail
Kalalau Trail
There is only one way to access the Napali Coast by land, and this is by taking the 11 mile long Kalalau Trail. The trail begins at Kee Beach and crosses five different valleys before ending up at Kalalau Beach on the Napali Coast. As beautiful as the journey may be, this is known for being one of the most challenging hikes on the island, with several narrow sections, as well as muddy topsoil that makes it difficult to establish a firm grip on the ground. The hike takes a full day one way, which is why many hikers choose to break their journey up and camp at Hanakoa Beach, turning the trip into a three day adventure. In addition to being an experienced hiker, you need to also ensure that you are able to deal with heights before attempting this trail, as you will find many sections that travel along the edge of ultra steep cliffs, which, while offering panoramic views, will definitely make your stomach turn if you are afraid of big drops.

Boat Tours
If you would like to explore the Napali Coast without hiking, then a boat tour is your best option, as there are multiple types to choose from. These will all usually set off from Port Allen on the west coast of the island, and, whether you opt for a sea kayak, a rigid hull inflatable, or a luxury sailing catamaran, the views that you will see make the trip well worthwhile. In addition to exploring the coast, a boat tour will also take you to see the many sea caves, waterfalls, and other natural features that the area boasts, meaning that even if you have already hiked to the coast before, a boat tour is still worth taking.

Helicopter Tour
The landscape surrounding the Napali Coast is even more impressive when viewed from above, which is why helicopter tours are extremely popular on Kauai. These tours fly through some of the island’s most inaccessible areas, and, in addition to taking in all of the hidden valleys around the Napali Coast, you will also be able to see many other natural landmarks, including the famous Waimea Canyon.

OROGOLD-exploring-the-napali-coast
Driving
Even if you cannot drive to the Napali Coast itself, there are still multiple spots where you can drive to and enjoy spectacular views of the coast. Polihale Beach and Kee Beach offer gorgeous views down to the coast, while the Kalalau Overlook and the Pu’u O Kila both overlook the extraordinarily beautiful Kalalau Valley.

With dramatic cliffs, golden beaches and historic archaeological sites, the Napali Coast is always a joy to explore. Whether this is your first time visiting Kauai, or you are returning to the coast after previous visits, this is a part of Hawaii that will never fail to inspire and captivate you.

Visiting Hawaii’s Heritage Sites

There are many places in Hawaii that are deeply treasured for their cultural, natural or historical significance. From rugged state parks to historic landmarks, here are some of the heritage sites that the Hawaiian islands have to offer.

The Island of Hawaii
Big Island
Big Island is home to several fascinating heritage sites, with the most famous of them all being the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This park is home to two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Maunaloa and Kilauea, providing volcanic landscapes unlike anywhere else in the world. Other state parks that are definitely worth visiting on Big Island include Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park, which is where Captain James Cook first set foot on the island, the ‘Akaka Falls State Park, and the Lapakahi State Historical Park, which is where you will be able to learn more about traditional Hawaiian lifestyles. For those seeking even more history, the Hulihee Palace used to be a vacation home for Hawaiian royalty, and can be found in the historic Kailua Village.

Oahu
Just like Big Island, there are many different heritage sites to be found in Oahu. The Bishop Museum is usually the first point of call for many visitors, as this will teach you so much about the Pacific region, providing a great starting point from which you can learn more about the islands’ history and culture. The Iolani Palace State Monument can also be found in Oahu, and is the only official royal state residence in the entire US. Other royalty-related sites include the Queen Emma Summer Palace and Washington Place, both of which are open for tours.

Kauai
There are just two main heritage sites to be found in Kauai, but one of these is considered by many to truly be a geological wonder. Dubbed “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, the Waimea Canyon State Park stretches out for over 14 miles, offering multiple scenic viewpoints, as well as a short nature trail. Also on Kauai is the Kilauea Lighthouse, which, in addition to being a National Wildlife Reserve, also offers incredible views of the island.

Manele Bay
Lanai

While Lanai may only have one heritage site, the Kaunolu Village, this archaeological site contains the largest surviving ruins of a prehistoric Hawaiian village, making it well worth exploring. From petroglyphs to Kahekili’s Leap, a 60 foot cliff from which warriors would dive to demonstrate their bravery, there is plenty of history to soak up here.

Maui
One of Maui’s heritage highlights includes the Haleakala National Park, which spans over 30,000 acres. This is a national park with one of the highest concentrations of endangered species, making it a must-visit for those who want to experience native Hawaiian wildlife. It is also home to the highest peak in Maui, meaning that there are many incredible views to be seen from here.

Each of the Hawaiian islands have at least one heritage site to visit, with some, such as Big Island and Oahu, being home to several. Whether you are seeking history, culture or natural beauty, these heritage sites promise to provide all of that plus so much more.
