Have You Considered a Workation Retreat?

Woman with laptop on balcony

Working from home was an exciting change for many to begin with, but the novelty can quickly wear off. Those same four walls staring back at you each day can really de-motivate, leaving so many remote workers desperate for a change of scene.

This is where the workation comes in…

The concept has been around for a while, but it really took off during the Covid-19 pandemic, when striking a good work/life balance became so much more challenging. Vacations quickly became a thing of the past, and home became a place of work rather than relaxation.

A workation gives you the opportunity to enjoy a stunning new destination, but with a strong focus still being placed on work. Whether you’d like to type away on a tropical beach or set up a temporary office in a luxury hotel suite, places all over the world are now catering to this popular trend by offering up special workation packages.

The Maldives

Maldives from above

The Maldives may be a popular honeymoon spot, but it’s also an exquisite location to spend a workation. Sandy white beaches, crystal clear blue waters, and peaceful seclusion – what more could you want?

The Maldives actually consists of 1192 islands that are sprinkled across the Indian Ocean. With each island having its own unique charm, many visitors spend their free time island hopping to truly immerse themselves in this tropical paradise.

Where to Stay

There are now quite a few hotels in the Maldives offering workation packages. However, one of the most popular is The Nautilus Maldives.

Why?

Well, for starters, they’re based in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, so you can only imagine how spectacular your surroundings will be. They offer week-long workation packages, but you can book for as many weeks as you want. Each package includes:

  • A personal assistant
  • A complimentary laundry service
  • Unlimited refreshments

If you would prefer to work outdoors, they’ll set up a special workstation just for you, complete with private WiFi, printers and scanners, and even a portable projector with its own screen.

The Soneva Fushi is another good option, with this resort offering a 50% discount when you book a stay for over 30 days. Their unique amenities are perfect for when you have some downtime, from speedboat trips to nearby islands to a night under the stars in a luxury Bedouin-style glamping tent.

Singapore

Singapore from above

Although Singapore is pretty built up, they have dealt with the Covid-19 crisis well, making it a great city in which to spend some time isolating away.

Just about every single one of the island nation’s attractions have adapted well to new restrictions, meaning that visitors are still able to enjoy the classics, all while staying safe. Plus, many of the country’s top attractions are outdoor-based anyway, such as:

  • The Singapore Zoo and Night Safari
  • Fort Canning Park
  • Sentosa
  • MacRitchie Reservoir
  • Singapore Botanic Gardens
  • Pulau Ubin
  • Jurong Bird Park

One of the highlights for many visitors to Singapore is the shopping, which many consider to be a national pastime. If your skin could do with a pick-me-up, drop in at one of the OROGOLD boutiques in Singapore, which are conveniently located around the island. You’ll be able to enjoy free product demonstrations, VIP facials, and so much more.

Where to Stay

Heard of the Singapore Sling cocktail?

It has made a name for itself around the world, and was invented at the Raffles Hotel, which also happens to be one of the best hotels in Singapore for a workation retreat.

Why?

Because they are offering “Work from Suite” packages, available on a daily rate. Each package includes access to the Raffles Butler Service, complete with secretarial support.

The InterContinental offers similar, but even has luxury pet amenities for those who want to workation with their pooch.

Florida

Florida from above

Famous for its amusement parks, beaches, and national parks, Florida offers workation visitors plenty of diversity. Covid-19 restrictions are starting to lift, meaning that its most popular attractions are once again open to the general public, although they will all still be following certain guidelines.

While the amusement parks may offer up a day of distractions, the relaxing beaches are usually the state’s biggest draw, with hundreds of miles of sandy stretches to choose from.

Some of the best beaches in the state to visit are:

  • Clearwater Beach – with shallow and clear waters, this one is perfect for families with young children
  • Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park – relatively undeveloped, making it great for getting away from the crowds
  • Caladesi Island State Park – another untouched stretch of white sand, which is also abundant in different bird species
  • Siesta Key – the sand here is made up of pure quartz, keeping it cool even in the hottest temperatures
  • Garden Key – one of the most remote and difficult to access beaches in the state, making it great for self-isolation

Where to Stay

Florida is large, and there are numerous hotels and resorts across the state offering up special workation packages. However, the Grande Lakes Orlando not only enjoys a prime location, but really does provide everything you could need for the ultimate workation.

In addition to being able to make the most of the hotel’s usual amenities, which include golf courses, several pools, and spas, the Work From Resort package comes with a Business Butler. Their job will be to help with admin tasks such as scanning and printing, while also helping you to find the best spots around the property with the strongest WiFi signal.

Parents with children can take a workation at this hotel too, thanks to the Grande Lakes Rangers. These can be hired by the hour or the day, and they will keep children occupied while their parents are busy working.

Barbados

Barbados from above

When the Covid-19 crisis hit, Barbados was quick to respond, not only in terms of taking care of its people, but also continuing to remain appealing to visitors.

How did they do this?

By coming up with the 12 Month Barbados Welcome Stamp. This initiative, which began in July 2020, is a new type of visa that allows people to spend up to a year in Barbados working remotely. You won’t need to pay income tax, and you can renew your visa after a year if you would like to stay longer.

Known for its sun, sand, and sea, along with its friendly and hospitable ambience, Barbados is an amazing destination for a workation. It’s home to colonial architecture, historic plantation houses, so much natural beauty, and some fascinating local traditions, giving you a truly incredible experience.

Where to Stay

The Courtyard by Marriott Bridgetown, Barbados is one of the best hotels to choose if you would like to go for pure luxury. The hotel recently completed a number of renovations to make themselves workation-friendly. Long-term workation stays come with:

  • Free WiFi throughout the hotel, meaning that you can work by the pool and on the beach

New York

New York from above

New York may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of a workation, but for those living in or near the city, a local workation may be exactly what’s needed to give yourself a little break, without having to take any official time off.

Spend your days off exploring some of New York’s most popular outdoor attractions, such as:

  • Central Park

  • East River State Park
  • The Bronx River
  • Hudson River Greenway

5 Hotels That Have Adapted Well to Covid-19

Hotel pool view

With the majority of people choosing to forgo travel in order to stay at home, hotels have really struggled to draw in guests over the past few months.

However, times are changing once again…

While some hotels are having a tough time keeping up with constantly-changing requirements, others have truly been exemplary when it comes to ensuring the safety of their guests.

If you plan on booking yourself into a hotel anytime soon, these five hotels are the ones to choose from.

The Hilton

Turn your dreams into reality. New adventures await you, book your stay at @waldorfamsterdam #DreamAway

A post shared by Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam (@waldorfamsterdam) on Sep 19, 2020 at 8:00am PDT

One of the most famous hotel chains in the world, it should come as no surprise that the Hilton has really outdone itself when it comes to its Covid-19 policy.

For starters, the hotel chain has partnered with RB, the creator of Dettol and Lysol, to create the Hilton CleanStay program. It basically means that all areas are cleaned extra-vigorously, with staff undergoing special training to ensure that they are knowledgable about these new cleaning methods.

Hilton are also consulting with the Mayo Clinic to make sure that the health standards at their hotels are always on-point.

They are offering all of their guests flexible booking options, meaning that any last-minute changes or cancellations can happen free of charge, and face coverings are mandatory in the public spaces of many of their hotels.

As an added bonus, the Hilton Honors App allows guests to digitally check in to their rooms, complete with a digital key. You can use the app to message staff, check out, and review your receipt, making all of these services completely contactless.

Which Hilton Hotel is the Best?

This depends on what you’re looking for – some are good for wellness and relaxation, others are known for their skiing, and several have exquisite beaches.

However, one of the best Hilton hotels all-round is the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. Set in 17th and 18th century palaces, this five star hotel, which boasts a luxury spa, personal concierge services, and Michelin-starred restaurants, is in a prime location, just two blocks from the heart of the city.

While you’re there, don’t forget to stop off at the OROGOLD Amsterdam store to treat your skin to complimentary product demonstrations, customized skin consultations, and a VIP gold facial.

The Hyatt

The Hyatt is another international hotel chain that is loved by so many.

In a recent Covid-19 survey, the Hyatt beat out its competitors when it came to its customers-first policy. Their enhanced levels of cleanliness puts guests at immediate ease, with the chain consulting with the Cleveland Clinic to put together its new safety protocols.

Many public spaces are sanitized hourly with hospital-quality disinfectants, and the chain is also testing out electrostatic sprayers to make their disinfecting even more effective.

All staff undergo temperature checks before they enter the hotel each time, and guests may also need to do this depending on the local requirements of the hotel that they are staying at.

The Hyatt strongly encourages social distancing, and has made this easier with protective shields strategically placed around their hotels.

Just like the Hilton, the Hyatt also offers up super-flexible booking and cancellation policies.

Are you a frontline worker?

If so, you could be eligible for a complimentary vacation at a Hyatt hotel; a scheme that they are running in collaboration with American Airlines. Healthcare workers from around the world are also able to enjoy the hotel’s Friends & Family rate until June 2021, as a way for the hotel to thank those who are caring for society.

Which Hyatt Hotel is the Best?

Well, according to US News, the best Hyatt Hotel is the Park Hyatt St. Kitts Christophe Harbour in St. Kitts & Nevis.

This almost-untouched Caribbean island is truly a piece of paradise. The hotel spans the Banana Bay, meaning that every room boasts a panoramic sea view. If you treat yourself to a suite, you’ll be able to enjoy private terraces, lounge areas, and a plunge pool too.

Four Seasons

What’s your plans for tomorrow ? We are looking forward to welcoming you for our reopening day, on Monday, March 2nd, at our bistro chic La Veranda, our Spa and bar to launch the 2020 season. #mondaymotivation #frenchriviera #cotedazurfrance @fourseasons @fourseasonsru @fourseasonsarabic @fourseasonsbr

The Four Seasons is another hotel that has really committed to changing the way they do things during this pandemic. Their Lead With Care program consists of highly stringent health and safety measures, with consultants at John Hopkins Medicine International providing advice.

In addition to the extra cleaning, along with numerous sanitizer stations dotted throughout hotels, all Four Seasons staff will have undergone special training, both in-person and virtually, to give them the best knowledge when it comes to dealing with situations during Covid-19.

Guest rooms are disinfected on a daily basis, and staff inspect each room with blacklights after to make sure that no area has been missed. Public spaces are cleaned every hour, and the hotel is also exploring various options for using ozone technology or UV technology to enhance air purification.

Don’t worry if you lose or forget your face mask either – the hotel provides each guest room with a special kit containing masks, sanitization wipes, and hand sanitizer.

Like the idea of being able to check in and out in a completely contactless way?

The Four Seasons allows for this at all of their hotels with the Four Seasons App. It limits face-to-face contact in a variety of different ways. Not only can you completely bypass the front desk on arrival and departure, but you’ll also be able to

  • Manage your reservation
  • Book an airport transfer
  • Order room service (which is delivered in a contactless way with single-use but sustainable packaging)
  • Book a table at a restaurant
  • Book a spa treatment

The app, as well as the live chat feature with hotel staff, can be translated into over 100 different languages, which is crucial for such an international hotel chain. This is also one of the only hotel live chats that are run by actual employees that are based on the property itself, rather than automated chatbots.

Which Four Seasons Hotel is the Best?

Many would agree that the Grand-Hotel Du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel really excels when it comes to luxury.

Located on the French Riviera, in seven hectares of landscaped Mediterranean gardens, this palace hotel first opened its doors in 1908, and has been truly legendary ever since.

The hotel boasts a number of different amenities, but it is famous for its seawater infinity pool, which overlooks the sea. For a jaw-dropping experience, take the hotel’s glass elevator down to the 33-metre pool – the views that greet you from all sides will take your breath away.

While meals can be had at the pool’s gorgeous outdoor location, you could also book yourself in to Le Cap, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant. French Mediterranean cuisine rules the roost here, and the restaurant is running at a limited capacity to ensure the safety of guests.

Accor

A post shared by Banyan Tree Mayakoba (@banyantreemayakoba) on Dec 6, 2019 at 8:40am PST

Although the Accor hotel chain was hit extremely hard by the effect of Covid-19, reporting huge losses and having to let go of 1000 jobs, the hotel has still been extremely committed to adapting to the new normal.

In partnership with Bureau Veritas, Accor have created the ALLSAFE initiative. This sees the hotel taking on the highest standards when it comes to cleanliness and safety. In addition to a reinforced cleaning program and sanitizer stations in all public areas, employees have been extensively trained in safety and hygiene. This training is ongoing, which is important since rules and local requirements are constantly changing.

The check in, check out, and payment processes are all contactless whenever possible, limiting exposure between hotel guests and staff, and rooms are also fully disinfected between guests. Staff have been taught to pay extra attention to high-touch items, such as remote controls and door handles.

Accor have also partnered up with AXA to provide their guests access to medical professionals, not only in person but also virtually. This goes a long way to help guests feel safer should any health issues arise during their stay.

All booking policies are completely flexible, and even guests who previously booked a room at a non-flexible rate will now be able to enjoy the perks that the flexible policies offer.

Which Accor Hotel is the Best?

The jury is still out – each Accor hotel offers something a little different, making it difficult to compare them. However, the Banyan Tree Mayakoba definitely sits near the top of the list.

Located in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, this hotel offers up Mexican charm with an Asian twist. The eco-resort has won numerous awards over the years for its five-star services and facilities, all of which take place in a beautiful pocket of untouched nature.

Playa del Carmen itself is an amazing part of the world to visit. While you may not be able to enjoy its iconic nightlife at the moment, this is where you will find some of the best beaches in Mexico. The city itself is also constantly buzzing, with an eclectic mix of both local and international names. While you’re browsing the stores here, make sure that you pop into the OROGOLD Playa del Carmen store to treat your skin to a little luxury too.

InterContinental

A post shared by InterContinental Danang Resort (@intercontinentaldanang) on Jul 11, 2020 at 6:35pm PDT

While just about every large international hotel chain has partnered with a group of medical experts to help lead their new health and hygiene efforts, the InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) has gone all out and is working with three:

  • Cleveland Clinic
  • Ecolab
  • Diversey

Together, they have come up with the IHG Clean Promise program. This was actually launched back in 2015, but has now been enhanced because of Covid-19.

In addition to staff having to undergo extra training, cleaning measures have been amped up. High-touch items and in-room furnishings have been replaced as much as possible with items that allow for more effective disinfecting.

Just like the other hotels on this list, IHG are also offering contactless check in and check out procedures, along with safety screens at the front desk. All payment transactions are contactless too, and social distancing is being implemented at all properties.

In addition to providing each guest with a special cleaning kit, the hotel is also displaying cleanliness information on signage and screens to ensure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to staying safe.

Of course, all bookings are now completely flexible, and deposits are no longer required when reserving a room. If you happen to be a healthcare professional, a government worker, or anyone else working on the frontline, then you will be able to take advantage of the hotel’s Heroes Rate, meaning fantastic discounts for the rest of 2020.

Already have IHG loyalty points but don’t think you’ll be using them anytime soon?

The group is running a special scheme that allows loyalty members to use their points for financial donations, which are being given to Covid-19 relief efforts.

Which IHG Hotel is the Best?

Again, this is hard to say, but the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort is consistently receiving awards for its world-class facilities and services. This resort is located in central Vietnam, surrounded by dense forests and bordered on one side by a tropical, sandy beach.

The resort is sprawled out over 39 hectares of land, making it easy to keep your distance from staff and guests. Golf buggies are used to transport guests around the hotel, and they also have a cable car system to help guests navigate and explore the resort’s hilly terrain.

Danang itself is known for its rich history as a French colonial port and its exquisite beaches. It is a fantastic location for outdoor activities, which is exactly what people are seeking during the Coronavirus pandemic.

In order to keep themselves open for business, just about every hotel out there has had to implement new health and hygiene measures because of Covid-19. However, while some may be doing the bare minimum, these five international chains have really gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of each and every one of their guests.

Woman doing yoga by water

Have you been feeling a little more stressed than usual?

One thing that makes many feel better is planning a vacation, especially if that trip involves disconnecting from the modern day world, giving you some precious time to reset and rejuvenate. Here are five life-changing wellness retreats that promise to do exactly that.

The Rockovery Retreat, Ibiza, Spain

Meet Cosmic Kim – our yoga teacher and crystal bowl sound healing expert. We first met Kim Booth (@kimboooth) as a young, fresh faced raver, (she’s now been coming to Ibiza, and living on and off the island for over 22 years), who worked in the dance music industry in journalism and PR. ——— Fast forward to now, she hosts the ever-popular @wellcosmicpineapple events at @pikesibiza in the summer (this year being its 5th year!) and is most looking forward to “sharing some magic for the heart and soul” with our clients on the Rockovery Retreat, through a powerful Cacao Ceremony, intention setting, plus exercises and breathing techniques that help you stay balanced and connected. ——— Drop us a DM for more info or email the team on reservations@pikesibiza.com 🙏🏼 ——— #ibiza #ibizaretreat #retreat #wellnessretreat #wellness #cosmic #cosmicconsciousness #pikesibiza #pikeshotel #rockoveryretreat

You may think of Ibiza as being a buzzing, tourist-filled hotspot, especially if you have already visited the Pikes Ibiza hotel, which has a bit of a hedonistic reputation. However, the summer of 2020 will see the hotel take on a slightly different approach to life…

This is where the Rockovery Retreat is being held – a wellness retreat with a rock ’n’ roll twist. Billed as being “a restart on your life, a rejection of bad habits, a rebirth of your true potential”, this retreat is being held for four days and three nights, with dates varying through the year. The retreat was designed by a personal trainer and nutritionist based in Ibiza, so you can be sure that both your physical and mental health will be top priority here.

What does this retreat involve?

You will be able to take part in a number of different activities on this retreat, including:

  • Wellbeing workshops
  • Guided sunrise meditations
  • Sunset yoga
  • Crystal bowls
  • Boxing classes
  • Breathing classes
  • Cooking demonstrations
  • Ibizan rituals
  • Vitamin injections

The retreat prides itself on welcoming in people from all walks of life and of all abilities and fitness levels, even those who are absolute beginners.

When it comes to accommodation, the rooms here are comfortable and luxurious, but with plenty of personality. The rock ’n’ roll theme is carried forward into the guest rooms, as well as throughout the hotel’s public spaces. When it comes to food, you’ll be able to sample a variety of healthy dishes, with a menu that caters to all tastes and requirements. One thing that you should know – the Pikes Ibiza is known for cooking up the best breakfasts on the island!

Once your four days are up, you could always extend your stay on this Balearic Island to enjoy everything else Ibiza has to offer. From its nightlife and beaches to its quiet villages and pine-clad hilltops, the vibrancy of Ibiza will perfectly complete your vacation.

The Quiet Transformation Retreat, Cozumel, Mexico

The Quiet Transformation Radical Self-Care Retreats in Cozumel, Mexico are held throughout the year from January to June. These seven day, seven night retreats are limited to groups of ten, with the activities here geared at all levels and abilities.

This is a retreat that focuses on stress-free living – teaching you how to take some time out for yourself to relax and renew. Design thinking is a concept that is heavily promoted here, with these principles being taught to retreat participants so that they are then better equipped to take proper control of their own lives once they head back home.

For those looking to take their lives in a new direction, the workshops here will be of particular interest to you. Some of the topics you may cover are:

  • Reframing your blockers and prototyping your future
  • Mapping out a life plan
  • Learning how to live an uncharted life

The daily schedules make room for plenty of free time, during which you can try your hand at the following:

  • Snorkeling and scuba diving
  • SUP boarding and kite boarding
  • Massage and aquassage
  • Acupuncture
  • Reiki

Accommodation and food is included in this retreat package, with all of the accommodation options located on a stunning stretch of beach, offering panoramic views of the Caribbean.

Wondering what you will be eating?

While the food served up here is Mexican-inspired, it is not the traditional Mexican fare you would find at a restaurant. Instead, the dishes are light, fresh and flavorful. Guests are able to sample new dishes each day, and all dietary restrictions are catered for.

Thanks to the retreat’s convenient location, this is the perfect opportunity to explore one of Mexico’s most diverse islands. If you’ve got some time to spare, make your way over to San Miguel de Cozumel, which is not only famed for its natural beauty, but is also where you will find an OROGOLD boutique store. Stop by for a relaxing VIP facial and complimentary product demonstrations – after all, your skin could do with a wellness treat too!

Sri Lanka is famous for its incredible natural beauty, and you will definitely see plenty of it if you are staying at the Santani Wellness Resort. This resort sits in the middle of an abandoned 120 acre tea estate, overlooking the Knuckles Mountain Range, which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The retreat packages here vary from seven nights to 21 nights, focusing on everything from detox and stress to health and addiction. This is quite a unique retreat, in that it combines ancient Ayurvedic principles with modern day science and nutrition, bringing you the very best of both worlds.

So, what do these retreats actually involve?

That all depends on what you need:

  • Santani Recovery – a customized program designed to support people who have undergone physical or emotional trauma
  • Santani Detox – a program that helps to cleanse the body, which also prevents a number of diseases from developing, including cancer, diabetes and hypertension
  • Santani Weight Loss – a strategic weight loss program that will have you feeling healthy and balanced, as well as motivated to continue the program once you return home
  • Santani Sleep – provides relaxation techniques along with a nutrition and exercise plan to help promote better sleep
  • Re-Balancing Bliss – an indulgent relaxation program combining de-stressing treatments with mindful education
  • De Addiction – helps people to overcome substance addiction by strengthening the mind and restructuring the thought processes involved in this

Wondering what the accommodation here is like?

The resort has 16 stand-alone chalets, each one with a balcony that showcases a spectacular view of the jungle valley below and the mountain range in the distance. There are also four garden chalets designed for families, with strategically-placed glass walls to frame the lush greenery outside.

The food here is something to look forward to as well…

Gourmet wellness cuisine is the focus of the kitchen. The resort’s trained chefs prepare a healthy and natural customized meal plan for each and every guest. Some of the sample dishes include:

  • A citrus and beetroot cured pink salmon
  • Grilled Australian grass fed beef tenderloin steak
  • Traditional Sri Lankan curry and rice
  • Crunchy banana blossom salad with shredded coconut

Since the food is locally sourced and ultra-seasonal, the dishes on offer frequently change.

The Japanese are known for their wellness traditions, but if you aren’t able to jet off to Japan for a week or two, then New York’s Shou Sugi Ban House is your next best option.

What exactly is it?

It’s a 13-room destination spa/retreat that hosts a number of global wellness and healing activities for guests to partake in. The retreat is set on three acres of lush land in the Hamptons, inspired by the Japanese principles of wabi-sabi.

There are a number of options available here when it comes to booking your retreat…

Set packages, such as the Mind & Body Cleanse Retreat, are available, and these usually have a minimum of around three nights. Alternatively, if you live locally and do not have a few days to spare, you could also book yourself in for a day retreat. These combine different elements from the center’s Signature Retreat, enabling you to curate a day program that is fully catered to everything you need.

Wondering what the spa menu here looks like?

Well, to begin with, the spa at the Shou Sugi Ban House is expansive. There are both indoor and outdoor areas, a thermal suite, hydrotherapy plunge pools, an ice fountain, and so much more! Some of the specifics that you will be able to enjoy include:

  • Massages
  • Facials
  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Reflexology
  • Crystal healing
  • Reiki
  • Vibroacoustic therapy
  • Shamanic healing
  • Shinrin-yoku

Guests stay in studios that are sleek but minimal, with high-end artisanal details. When it comes to food, the menu here is seasonal and plant-rich, with their chefs sourcing local and organic produce whenever possible. The retreat also has their own on-site gardens where they grow a large amount of the herbs and greens that are served up to guests.

If you are traveling here from a distance, then the fact that the Shou Sugi Ban House is just 90 minutes from New York City is a bonus. Not only does this make flying in relatively easy, but it also means that you can then spend some time exploring the city, either before or after your retreat. While you’re there, be sure to stop off at one of the OROGOLD New York City stores, because your skin would appreciate some TLC too!

Speaking of medicine, the resort has a Medical Center, complete with a specialized team of doctors and therapists that are available to help you in your wellness journey.

How long do the retreats here last for?

Their set packages vary, depending on what you are after. From a seven day Mind & Body Detox to a three day Health Check-Up, options are diverse. Alternatively, if you didn’t want to sign up for a set package, you could also just book yourself in for a few nights at the hotel, and pick the individual treatments you want. Of course, as you can probably imagine, the accommodation at this hotel exudes luxury. Rooms are five star, offering up the utmost of comfort – after just one night here, you won’t want to leave!

Wondering what else there is to do in the area?

Well, while wellness has always been the main focus of the region, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy too. If you are visiting in the winter months, try your hand at skiing, tobogganing and snowshoeing. Those who visit in the summer can have a go at biking, hiking, and inline skating.

365 Days of Summer: 12 Sun-Soaked Destinations for Each Month of the Year

Boat on water with fish underneath

Got the winter blues?

That’s easy to fix…

Simply pack your bags, pick the month that you’re currently in from the list below, and book yourself a getaway to the corresponding destination.

January: Mexico

Although the weather in Mexico varies quite significantly between each region, January is usually the driest month across the entire country, making it a great time to visit. The temperature in January is still warm, but not unbearably hot, and you also won’t need to deal with the hoards of tourists that flock to Mexico later in the year.

Wondering where in Mexico you should go?

Here are some of the country’s best spots:

  • Jalisco – home to tequila and mariachi
  • Cozumel – this island is home to some of the best diving spots in all of Mexico
  • Coyoacán – located in Mexico City, this district is wonderfully bohemian in nature, with cobblestone streets, numerous sidewalk cafes and plenty of art
  • Puebla – this historic city is famous for its colonial architecture, culinary heritage and traditional pottery

If you need a skincare fix while you’re away, you will find an OROGOLD store in each of the Mexican locations listed above.

February: Goa

Located on the southwestern coast of India, Goa, for a long time, used to be a Portuguese colony, giving this state an intoxicating blend of Indian and Portuguese heritage. Goa is famous for its sun, sand and sea, along with its incredible seafood and its love for spirituality.

With so many new luxury hotels and villas now operating all over the state, Goa is a great place to go for a relaxing, indulgent vacation.

Why February?

Because December and January tend to be pretty busy in Goa, but March is when the waters become rougher and the temperatures more humid, making February the ideal month to visit.

March: Dubai

If you haven’t yet visited Dubai, make this the year you do so. Dubai really is unlike anywhere else in the world – its futuristic architecture, unbelievably large shopping malls, and general opulence and glamor really need to be experienced.

Of course, Dubai has a lot more going for it than just its city life…

Venture further afield for everything from camel safaris to camping under the stars, giving you an authentic taste of life in the desert.

Dubai experiences warm temperatures throughout the year, with November to April being its winter months. While this may be the case, this is still the best time to visit the city, with the weather being comfortably warm and dry.

April: Thailand

Ok, so Thailand in April can get pretty hot, even uncomfortably so.

So, why the recommendation?

Because April also happens to be the month of Thai New Year, as well as the Songkran festival, which marks the beginning of the summer season. Otherwise known as the national water fight, the festival runs for five days across the country, and features friendly water fights along with plenty of street parties.

If this doesn’t sound like your type of thing, there are many other places in Thailand where you can head to in April for some rest and relaxation. Try Railay for some truly epic beaches, which you can only reach via a 20 minute boat ride from Krabi, or, if you would prefer tropical yoga and Buddhist temples, head to Koh Samui.

Temple in Thailand in the mountains

May: Peru

With Peru’s rainy season ending in March, and the busy tourist season beginning in June, May is the perfect time of year to visit.

Most visit Peru for its awe-inspiring natural features, with the Amazon rainforest being a must-see for all visitors. This part of the rainforest is believed to be the most prolific and diverse section, and is also one of the most bio-diverse parts of the world.

Peru is also where you will find the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, another area well worth a visit. If you are feeling adventurous, give the Inca Trail a try – this four-day hike is famed for being one of the finest trails on the entire planet.

June: Athens

Greece’s summer season begins in June, meaning that you are likely to experience peak tourist rates when booking your trip, but the overall experience will be more than worth it. The capital of Greece, as well as the heart of Ancient Greece, Athens has an amazing history behind it, with the city dotted with numerous 5th century landmarks that are open for public exploration. The most famous would be the Parthenon, a former temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena.

In addition to checking out all of the historic architecture around the city, you will find plenty of other things to do in Athens too, such as:

  • Visiting the National Gardens, featuring 16 hectares of landscaped grounds along with a small zoo
  • Checking out the Varvakios Agora, a food market featuring local vendors from around the country
  • Hiking to the top of Lycabettus Hill, one of Athens’ highest peaks
  • Touring some of the city’s museums, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens and the Museum of Cycladic Art
  • Watching a movie at Cine Paris, one of the city’s 90 outdoor film venues

July: New York

If you want to experience the summer months in one of the most important cities in the world, then head to New York in July. Yes, the temperatures can sometimes get a little too warm, but the thunderstorms that you will experience will also help to cool you back down. However, usually, the New York in July is comfortably balmy, making it a pleasure to explore the city’s many sights.

Even if you have never been to New York before, you are probably well aware of some of its major attractions. Everything from the Empire State Building to the Statue of Liberty to the Brooklyn Bridge are famous world-over, but, no matter how many times you may have seen these landmarks in the movies, there is nothing quite like experiencing them for yourself.

If you’re a first-time visitor to the city, the best way to begin exploring it is by signing up for a guided tour. Yes, this may seem a little cheesy at first, but this brief tour will take you to areas that you can then delve deeper into in your own time.

Does your skin not handle the heat too well?

Don’t worry, OROGOLD has several stores in New York, where you will be able to enjoy some product demonstrations, and even a VIP facial – anything your skin needs to be happy and healthy again.

August: Northern Spain

Street in Northern Spain

Some parts of Spain can seem stiflingly hot in August, with many areas pretty much shutting down at this time. Due to the heat and the inability to comfortably go about day-to-day activities, this is when most people take their annual leave, with some companies closing down for the entire month.

However, since the temperatures in the north of Spain are just about perfect in August, this area continues on as normal, making this month a great time to visit.

Not sure exactly where you should go?

Just about anywhere near to the Atlantic coastline will be ideal, such as:

  • San Sebastian – if you consider yourself a foodie, this food-obsessed resort down will seem like paradise to you. Make sure that you give pintxo, the local version of tapas, a try
  • Oviedo – famous for its medieval town and its 9th century Gothic cathedral, this historic city will teach you so much about the region’s past
  • Santiago de Compostela – a small city with narrow, winding alleyways, quaint architecture and a rich sense of culture

September: Croatia

If you want to avoid the crowds, then September is a great month to visit Croatia, since this is when the summer season is just about winding down. However, the temperatures are still warm, but make sure that you visit during the first half, rather than the second, of September.

Why?

Because, towards the end of the month, many of the seasonal attractions, including island bars and restaurants, begin to close down for the year.

Don’t know much about Croatia?

It is located in Southeast Europe, next to Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia and a couple of other countries. Unlike some of the other destinations on this list, Croatia may not seem like an immediately obvious place to visit, but this country really does have so much to offer.

Not only is it packed with stunning pebbled beaches, atmospheric Roman ruins, sprawling national parks and soaring peaks, but you will also find quirky museums, trendy cafes, and a fascinating culture.

Plus, if you happen to be a Game of Thrones fan, many parts of the country will instantly seem familiar to you, from the city of Dubrovnik to the Fortress of Klis.

October: Hawaii

For the best chances of dry weather, visit Hawaii in early October, when it is still pleasantly warm, but before the rainy season hits. Of course, the specific island you pick will influence your experience too – Big Island tends to be the driest, while Kauai experiences the most rainfall.

When people think of Hawaii, they imagine palm-lined beaches, lush vegetation and a unique culture – all of this could not be more true. The islands are synonymous with paradise, and there are few that would disagree.

Can’t decide which island to visit?

Try Maui, which is consistently ranked as the best island in the world. In addition to the island’s rich natural beauty and amazing cuisine, this is also where you will find an OROGOLD store that will cater to all of your skin’s tropical needs.

November: The Canary Islands

View of Canary Islands beach at sunset

The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago that lies just off the coast of north-west Africa. There are eight main islands here, and several smaller ones, each dominated by their rugged, volcanic landscape.

Each island has a distinct personality to offer, with some of the most popular being:

  • Tenerife – the largest of the islands, Tenerife is also the most developed, and is home to the second-largest Carnival in the world
  • Fuerteventura – this island is one of the least-developed, with a desert-like landscape that makes wind-sports especially popular
  • Gran Canaria – this round island is packed with so much biodiversity, making it perfect for those who enjoy exploring the great outdoors

December: Australia

Australia experiences their summer towards the end of the year, which is why many choose to visit during these months. Of course, the temperatures you experience will depend on where about in the country you choose to visit.

If you’re seeking out the hustle and bustle of city life, there are plenty of major cities to pick from, including Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide.

Of course, many prefer to experience Australia’s wilder side, with the Daintree Rainforest, which is around 180 million years old, never being a disappointment. Fraser Island, with its 75-mile long beach, is also popular, as are the white beaches on the Whitsunday Islands, which are located just off the famous Great Barrier Reef.

For those of you who prefer to relax by enjoying some fine wines, Australia has you covered there too, with this country producing some of the best wines in the world. Dusk to Dawn in North America’s Largest City

Catedral Metropolitana, Mexico

Mexico City is bursting with so many different things to see and do, but if you only have one day to spend in the city, narrowing down all of your options can be quite tough. To make your life easier, this itinerary is perfect for those who only have a day to spare, and showcases some of the finest landmarks and sights that the city has to offer.

El Paseo de la Reforma
Begin your day in Mexico City at El Paseo de la Reforma, which is a famous avenue that sports many European influences. It begins at the city center, and runs all the way to the Chapultepec Castle, with several cultural highlights along the way, from the fountain of Diana the Huntress to the Angel of Independence.

Castillo de Chapultepec and the Museo Nacional de Historia
Castillo Chapultepec is a historic castle that has served many roles over the past, and today is home to the Museo Nacional de Historia. When entering the park, you will need to make your way down to the bottom of the hill to explore the castle, which is open from Tuesdays to Sundays. From here, there is special transportation to take visitors to the museum at the top, although you can also access it via a fifteen minute walk. While you may not have time to fully explore the collection here, the view of the city from the balcony of the museum is definitely not to be missed.

Catedral Metropolitana
Once you have explored Castillo de Chapultepec, head back to the city center to take a look around the Catedral Metropolitana. This cathedral sits on top of ancient Aztec temple ruins, and there are even a few remaining walls that you can check out. At one point in time, the cathedral was considered to be endangered, as the soft clay soil it was built on led to it sinking dramatically, but it has now been reconstructed to guarantee its conservation. While at the cathedral, be sure to sample one of the cookie-like biscuits that you will find here, cooking over a grill. Known as gorditas de nata, these are usually served up in a stack, which is rolled in wax paper, and should always be eaten while still warm.

Templo Mayor and Museo del Templo Mayor
Templo Mayor is where you will be able to see the ruins of an Aztec pyramid, with walkways laid across the dig site to ensure that visitors enjoy a good view. The museum here is equally fascinating, with over 6000 items on display, so be sure to allocate a couple of hours to explore its offerings.

Pata Negra
Since you likely grabbed a quick street food snack for your lunch, head to Pata Negra for an exceptional meal to round out your day. If you have a few hours to spare, the venue begins to play music later on in the evening, from modern to Latin, while Wednesdays sees free salsa classes being hosted here.

A single day in Mexico City is not nearly enough to even scratch the surface on all that the city has to offer. However, this itinerary will give you a brief taster of some of the city’s highlights, and guarantees an unforgettable, and educational, day out.

Eat Your Way Through Mexico City’s Historic City Center

Mexican street food

Mexico City’s Historic Center is filled with remnants of the city’s heritage, and while its museums and landmarks are definitely educational to explore, you will also not be able to ignore the tantalizing aromas that waft over from the area’s many street food stalls. From tlacoyos to tamales, these are some of the street foods that you simply have to try.

Tamales and Atole
If you are seeking a street food snack to start your day with, then look for a stall that serves up tamales and atole. This is one of the most popular of street food dishes, and features steamed, corn husk pockets of masa that have been stuffed with a meat or cheese. Atole is a hot corn-based beverage that has been sweetened with unrefined sugar and flavored with cinnamon and vanilla, and perfectly balanced out the tamale to result in a fresh and filling breakfast.

Tlacoyos
Believed to have been created by the original inhabitants of Toluca, a town that lies 40 miles west of Mexico City, tlacoyos are a snack that has barely changed since Aztec times, making this a truly authentic street food snack. These eye-shaped discs of blue corn masa are stuffed with a filling of your choice, whether this may be braised pork belly, mashed fava beans or fresh Mexican cheese, before being cooked on a large, open-air griddle. The crispy cakes are then topped with either wild spinach or grilled cactus paddles, before being drizzled with cotija cheese and red or green salsa.

Jugo
Mexico is home to quite the selection of fresh produce, and the juice bars that you will find all over the Historic Center make the most of these, while providing a refresher from the sun’s intense heat. Whether you opt for a single fruit or a more elaborate, mixed blend, these juices never fail to hit the spot on a hot day in the city.

Tostadas
Tostadas are deep-fried corn tortillas with a delicious topping, and while they may sometimes be quite simple and humble, many street food stalls are now putting their own spin on this Mexican staple. Many stalls in the Historic Center will serve up dozens of varieties of tostada toppings, with everything from fresh shrimp, tomato and chilli to pork in mole.

Tacos al Pastor
While you may come across several delicious street eats in Mexico City, the majority of these have usually originated elsewhere. However, tacos al pastor is one of the only dishes to have actually originated in the capital itself, and were hugely influenced by the city’s Lebanese immigrants in the 1950’s. A variant of the Middle Eastern shawarma, this dish features marinated grilled meat that is thinly sliced, before being topped with onions and coriander, and then rolled up in a tortilla.

You will find a street food stall parked on just about every street corner in Mexico City, but this is, without a doubt, one of the highlights of the city. From freshly fried tlacoyos to flavorful tostadas, you should definitely not leave the city without tasting these foods at least once.

Travel Advice for Mexico

traveling couple

Travelling to a new destination for the first time can often be quite daunting, especially if you are not quite sure exactly what to expect. From safety tips to shopping tips, here are a few snippets of travel advice that promise to be a useful read before you set off for Mexico.

Avoid Flagging Taxis on the Street
While hailing a cab from the side of the street may not seem like a dangerous activity, this is a way in which a number of tourists are targeted each year, as thieves either pose as taxi drivers, or work with taxi drivers, to take advantage of visitors. Instead, if you need a taxi, have your hotel or restaurant call you one, so that you can be sure that they are from a reputable company.

Pack Breathable Fabrics
Many people travel to Mexico and watch in wonder as the locals go about their business in long, covered clothing, especially when the heat is really beating it down. However, the secret here is the fact that their clothing is made from breathable fabrics, such as cottons and linens. Even the traditional huipil, which is still worn throughout eastern Mexico, is made from cotton to ensure that the wearer does not end up feeling too hot. So, when packing your suitcase, be sure to leave the synthetics at home and opt for natural fabrics as much as possible.

Try to Speak Some Spanish
When visiting a new country, it is always a good idea to learn a few words in the local language beforehand. Not only does this improve upon your own language skills, but it is also something that locals will really appreciate when you are speaking to them. If you Spanish is extremely rusty, do not feel embarrassed, as locals are likely to help you out with your words and pronunciations rather than mock you.

Taste Regional Specialities
Mexican food is now available all over the world, but the food that you will actually encounter in Mexico is likely to be quite different from the Mexican cuisine you will have tasted in the past. While tacos, enchiladas and all of your other favorites will still be available, Mexican cuisine is so much more complex than this, and each region will have their own range of speciality dishes. From Mayan-influenced dishes to meals that date back to the Aztecs, make sure that you sample a wide variety of dishes when travelling to Mexico.

Don’t Drink Tap Water
The tap water in Mexico is not safe to drink, and this includes the ice that is made from it, so be sure to purchase bottled water when travelling through the country. Some hotels may have purified tap water, but unless there is a sign stating this, be sure not to drink it.

Mexico is a diverse and fascinating country, with so much to offer. While you do need to take a few travel precautions when visiting, do not forget to let your guard down so that you can really enjoy the warmth and generosity that you will experience from locals.

Cuexcomate – An Unusual Landmark

Located in Mexico’s Puebla City, Cuexcomate is the smallest volcano in the world, making it quite the unusual landmark. Measuring 43 feet high, and with a base diameter of just 75 feet, Cuexcomate may be an extinct volcano, but it is well worth taking the time to visit.

Popocatepetl volcano
The Birth of Cuexcomate

It is believed that Cuexcomate dates all the way back to the year 1064, when the nearby Popocatepetl volcano, which lies between Mexico City and Puebla, erupted. Popocatepetl is frequently erupting, but this eruption was exceptionally violent, resulting in the creation of a secondary crater, otherwise known as Cuexcomate.

A Dark Past
Cuexcomate has experienced a dark past, as it used to be the site at which human sacrifices were carried out. Priests at the time were hoping to appease the Gods and convince them to stop the volcanoes in the area from erupting, as they were slowly destroying the city. They decided that human sacrifices were the way forward, and would throw young individuals into the fiery mountain, but, of course, this did not stop the eruptions, and the priests soon realized that their methods were not making a difference. In following years, the volcano was also used as a depository for those who committed suicide in nearby areas, once again contributing to the dark past that surrounds Cuexcomate.

Inside the Crater
In addition to standing out for being the smallest volcano in the world, Cuexcomate is also unique due to the fact that it boasts a metal spiral staircase that enables visitors to climb all the way down into the volcano’s crater. Once visitors reach the platform at the bottom, they are rewarded with views of the interior of a volcano that many will never have the opportunity to experience. From the pool of water below to the stalactites that hang off the rocks to the eight meter stretch of lava, the view from within is definitely surreal, especially with the addition of the waterfall that ebbs and flows based on the volcanic activity of Popocatepetl. While geographers claim that the volcano is unlikely to suddenly burst into activity, the increased eruptions that Popocatepetl has been experiencing leads some to believe that, if there were to be another violent eruption, the subterranean link between the two volcanoes might become active again, which would put a swift end to Cuexcomate.

Health Benefits
Many claim that, due to its unique features, visiting Cuexcomate brings about some interesting health benefits. With the magnetism that it attracts from nearby volcano Popocatepetl, as well as the sound of the water outside, visiting the volcano is said to be able to relieve stress and tension, while promoting overall good health.

Since Cuexcomate is situated in the residential neighborhood of La Libertad, the best way for tourists to pay it a visit is by arranging for a taxi to take you there and back. With this landmark being open every day of the week, it is easy to plan a visit, and will definitely leave you with a memorable experience.

Piramide Tepanapa

Piramide Tepanapa
Famous for being the largest pyramid in the world, as well as the world’s largest monument, the Piramide Tepanapa is, without a doubt, Choloula’s most popular attraction. Also referred to as the Great Pyramid of Cholula, the pyramid can be found in the Cholula Archaeology Park, and visitors are able to walk through a 1200 foot tunnel that runs through the pyramid. The pyramid is made up of several pyramids that have been built on top of each other, and, over the years, archaeologists have dug around five miles of tunnels within the structure in order to explore it. There are guided tours available for visitors, and these will take you around some of the pyramid’s most impressive and unique features.

Museums
Being a city that is so packed with history and culture, it is no surprise that there are a number of museums in Cholula that are dedicated to preserving this. The authentically restored Franciscan Library has collections that span everything from religion to philosophy to fine art, while the Casa de la Cultura hosts temporary exhibitions and workshops that range from art to music to theater. For those who are hoping to learn more about the city itself, a visit to the Museo del Caballero Aguila is a must, as this museum offers a walking tour that showcases the history of Cholula, giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about the history of the longest continuously occupied neighbourhood in the country, from pre-Hispanic times to the modern day.

The Ex Convento de San Gabriel
Churches
Considering the size of Choloula, the fact that it has around 40 churches is quite impressive, and many of these are worthwhile landmarks that are both fascinating and educational to explore, boasting a variety of architectural styles. The Ex Convento de San Gabriel is one of the most popular religious sites in the city that tourists visit, as this walled garden is home to three different churches that date back to the 1500’s. This is one of the oldest churches in the city, with the rest of them dating between the 17th and 19th centuries, such as the Parish of San Pedro, the Nuestra Senora de los Remedios, and the San Francisco Acatepec.

In addition to being a beautiful historic destination, Choloula is also a university town, meaning that it is known for its vibrant nightlife scene, which is able to perfectly round off a day spent visiting the city’s cultural attractions. Street Foods to Enjoy in Puebla City

Street vendor
Many consider Puebla City to be the birthplace of traditional Mexican cuisine, making it no surprise that the city is one of Mexico‘s top foodie destinations. From the tasty hybrid dish of Tacos Arabes to freshly grilled Esquites and Elotes, these are some of the street foods that you simply have to try when visiting Puebla City.

Grilled Esquites and Elotes
Corn is an ingredient that has always played a significant role in Mexico, and while this street food may be a simple dish, it is a common one that can be found throughout the country. However, while most areas of Mexico choose to boil the corn, Puebla stands out by grilling it over charcoal, and then serving it up either in a cub, known as Esquites, or on the cob, known as Elotes, along with a flavorful helping of mayonnaise, cheese, lime and chili.

Tacos Arabes
Taco Arabes is a dish that can be described as a mix between a Middle Eastern Shawarma and an Al Pastor Taco, and was conceived after Lebanese immigrants brought the Shawarma to Mexico. This hybrid dish is a fantastic example of how globalization and immigration have had an impact on Puebla’s traditional cuisine, and, served up in a large pita-style bread, packed with spit-roasted pork and topped with lemon juice, is a dish that many find difficult to resist.

Cemitas
Cemitas

Many destinations have their own specialty version of a sandwich, and in the case of Puebla, this would be the Cemita. These sandwiches are made in a variety of ways, but are usually always quite over-the-top, and are commonly filled with pork Milanesa, Quesillo cheese, which comes from Oaxaca, onions, and chipotles, although there are plenty of other fillings to choose from.

Chalupas
Chalupas, which are not to be confused with the chalupas served up at fast food chains around the world, are one of Puebla’s most legendary street food dishes, and can be found frying on a multitude of street corners every evening. Consisting of corn tortillas that have only been lightly fried, and then topped with onions, salsa and shredded meat, chalupas are one of the most popular street food items in the city.

Empanadas
Empanadas
Just like Tacos Arabes, empanadas are not a traditional Mexican dish, having originated in Spain, but, when it comes to street food in Puebla City, a local version of empanadas can just about always be found. Unlike the empanadas that are served up around the rest of the country, the Puebla City version uses a flaky, pastry-like bread, and is baked into a triangle shape. Whether stuffed with mole, pineapple and ham, or a variety of other delicious fillings, this is a street food that is perfect for all times of the day.

The cuisine that you will find in Puebla City is unlike that of any other Mexican destination, which is why this city really stands out in the culinary world. From their unique take on Empanadas to the explosive flavors of the traditional Chalupa, these are some street food dishes that really need to be experienced in order to be truly appreciated.
