Napa Valley is always a joy to visit, but fall makes this experience all the more special. This part of Northern California is home to a large number of both native and non-native trees, and every single one of these turns into a fiery shade each fall.

The vineyards that Napa Valley is famous for put on their own vibrant display. Once October rolls around, all of the leaves on the thousands of grapevines turn to a vivid amber color, providing stunning views all around.

While You’re There…

October happens to be quite a busy time for vineyards, and, if you plan things right, you may be able to take part in some of their seasonal activities, such as grape stomping.

Located in Golden Gate Park, the San Francisco Botanical Garden features 55 acres of magnificent foliage each fall. Due to the vast array of different plants here, 9000 species from around the world to be specific, the range of colors is spectacular – from the purple/reds of the dogwoods to the striking gold of the gingko trees.

While 60-90 minute tours of the gardens are available, you can also opt to wander the grounds yourself to take in all of the incredible fall foliage. Each garden has a unique theme, whether this is related to a country or to something else, such as the Ancient Plants or the Garden of Fragrance, giving you something different to look at with each area that you visit.

Be sure to make some time to also take a look at the Japanese Tea Garden, which is located in Golden Gate Park too. This is the oldest public Japanese garden in the USA, and the Japanese maples here, with koi ponds and a zen garden serving as a serene backdrop, also transform into dazzling shades each fall.

Treat Your Skin

Once you have finished exploring the San Francisco Botanical Garden, take a stroll over to Market Street. In amongst the glitzy designer stores and branded boutiques here, you will also find the OROGOLD San Francisco store. Stop by for a free VIP facial, product demonstrations, and some of the best skin care advice you will have ever had.

Fall falls upon Hope Valley in around mid September, so you’ll need to act fast if you were hoping for a fall getaway this year. Located in Alpine County, Hope Valley is considered to be a hidden gem – even many locals don’t know about this gorgeous spot.

In the fall, the dense willows and aspens here put on a vibrant display of bright gold foliage, making it look as though the hillsides and meadows are up in flames. There are plenty of outdoor activities to do here too, from fishing to hiking to camping.

Feeling Adventurous?

Just south of Hope Valley, just before South Lake Tahoe, you’ll find a small creek, which is the site that thousands of salmon choose to spawn at this time of year. Time your visit right and you’ll be able to see their offspring make their way into the world for the first time.

Rancho San Antonio Preserve

Located in Cupertino, the Rancho San Antonio Preserve is a popular state park with just under 4000 acres of grounds to explore. With much of this being open space, not many people think of the preserve when it comes to fall foliage, but if you head on over to where the majestic oaks and maples are growing, you will be treated to quite the sight.

In addition to the gorgeous fall foliage here, you will also be able to see the persimmon trees full of flowers, adding a beautiful contrast to your surroundings.

Getting Active

To really explore the beauty of the Rancho San Antonio Preserve, you’ll need to make your way through some of the park’s trails. These snake through the landscape for 24 miles, and there are several options to choose from:

  • Wildcat Loop Trail – this three mile trail will take you through fern-filled canyons and open meadows, before reaching a viewpoint that showcases both Mt. Tamalpais and Mt. Hamilton
  • Stephen E. Abbors Trail – this trail, which stretches out for just under four miles, is a little more challenging with its 1600 ft gain in elevation. It climbs up the Black Mountain for panoramic views of the bay area, before linking up with some of the other trails in the park
  • Black Mountain Trail – this four mile trail also takes you up the Black Mountain, but with a different route that showcases views of the Santa Clara Valley and Stevens Creek Canyon

For those who like wildlife, there is plenty to be seen throughout the park. However, be aware that you may also end up sighting a mountain lion – if this happens, leave the area immediately and report this to a ranger.

Plumas County

Located just north-east of Sacramento, even the drive to Plumas County will impress, with Highway 70 being designated a National Scenic Byway. The entire road is lined with Black Oak, Mountain Dogwood, and Big Leaf Maple, treating you to huge swathes of crimsons, reds, and golds as you drive along.

Once you get there, follow the area’s Leaf Peeping Map so that you can figure out the best spots to head to. Some of these include:

  • Feather River Canyon
  • Indian Valley
  • Lake Almanor
  • Bucks Lake

When to Visit

Fall touches upon different areas at various times, but due to the diversity of nature in Plumas County, you have quite a long viewing season when it comes to fall foliage. Any time between September and mid November would work, although you would need to adjust your route depending on the day you are visiting.

Fortunately, Plumas County offers daily leaf peeping reports each fall, which should help you to plot the perfect route.

Apple Hill

A post shared by Apple Hill® (@applehill) on Aug 24, 2020 at 12:30pm PDT

For many people, the first thing that comes to mind when fall is mentioned is apples, and this is exactly what you will find at Apple Hill. Located in El Dorado County, Apple Hill is packed with fruit orchards that really come to life each fall.

Of course, picking your own apples is a must-do activity here, and there are so many different varieties to choose from, including:

  • Golden Delicious
  • Rome Beauty
  • Fuji
  • Pink Lady
  • Granny Smith

The farms in this area also grow a number of other fall crops too, from grapes and pumpkins to plums and persimmons. High Hill is known for its apple milkshakes, while Rainbow Orchards is famous for its apple cider donuts, making this trip a must for eager foodies.

If you can’t decide where to go, the Apple Hill Growers Association provides maps and routes to enable you to make the most of your visit.

One thing to keep in mind as you are driving around the area is that the roads here can sometimes be treacherous. There will likely be so much out of your window that will constantly be grabbing your attention, but the roads also feature quite sharp bends, so make sure that you keep your wits about you.

Getting Ready for Christmas

Once you have eaten your fill of fresh fall foods, make your way over to Indian Rock Tree Farm. Since this isn’t a part of the Apple Hill Growers Association, it’s considered to be quite the hidden gem, with many visitors not realizing that this little slice of Christmas sits just around the corner from them.

Indian Rock Tree Farm is known for being one of the oldest Christmas tree farms in the area, and they produce several different varieties that will soon be used as Christmas trees. From the Douglas fir to the Canaan fir to the Sequoia, these evergreens may not put on a colorful display of fall foliage, but they are still impressive enough to warrant a visit.

Downtown Sacramento

Sacramento, you're pretty 💛

A post shared by Sac Through The Seasons (@sacthrutheseasons) on Nov 25, 2018 at 8:46am PST

There aren’t many cities that offer the same level of fall foliage to compete with the many countryside options out there, but Sacramento is different. With its nickname being the City of Trees, the downtown area of Sacramento, along with parts of midtown, are covered with dense tree canopies that were designed to protect the city from the sweltering heat of the summer sun.

Come fall, these trees break out into a mind-boggling array of fall colors, which gently flutter to the ground whenever a strong wind blows. The contrast between city life around you and the beautiful foliage above also adds an ethereal appeal to fall in Sacramento, making this something that everyone should experience at least once.

Exploring the City

As you make your way around Sacramento to check out the fall foliage, you will likely come across some of the city’s most famous attractions. The Governor’s Mansion, Sutter’s Fort, and the California State Capitol Building are must-see spots for history buffs, while those into art and culture should check out the Crocker Art Museum, which is famous for being one of the first major art museums to open in the country.

Shopaholics will feel right at home in Sacramento too – there are several big shopping streets here where you can indulge in some retail therapy. In amongst the many different shopping centers sits the Arden Fair Mall, which is home to over 165 stores. Some of the most-loved brands in the country call this mall home, along with OROGOLD, where you will be able to enjoy free product demonstrations and luxury facials.

Located in Woodside, Filoli Gardens is recognized worldwide for its abundance of natural beauty and sheer diversity when it comes to trees and other plants. The fall foliage here is not to be missed, with the gardens inspired by a traditional English country estate.

The formal gardens here are usually what attract the most visitors, but, just beyond this, you will find the Filoli Nature Preserve. If you want to see fall foliage in a wilder setting, this is the area to head to, with redwood stands, oak forests, and so much more. Wildlife is plentiful in the area as well, whether this may be deer, lizards, or an amazing variety of birds.

There is a mile-long nature trail that visitors can explore here, which ends up at the Sally MacBridge Nature Center, another fascinating experience. There are several domestic animals that live in the nearby field, from turkeys to California quail, all of which look especially stunning with the fall foliage as their backdrop. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Once you’re done with all of that walking, head to the garden’s restaurant, called the Quail’s Nest Cafe. The focus here is on fresh, local, and sustainable food, with many of the ingredients used coming from the gardens themselves.

A Virtual Visit

With all that’s going on in the world right now due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Filoli Gardens understands that many people are going to be missing out on their fall foliage this year. Fortunately, the garden offers the opportunity for virtual visits, meaning that even those on the opposite side of the world will be able to appreciate the beauty that this garden offers throughout the year.

With so much color and beauty all around, many would consider fall to be the most spectacular time of year. Whether leaf peeping is something that you do annually, or you simply want to take some time out of your busy life this year to appreciate the magnificent fall foliage around you, these Northern California spots are guaranteed to not disappoint.

Baked goods on table

Love baked goods?

Whether it may be fresh bread, pastries, cookies, or anything else, these bakeries are not only famous for cooking up incredible baked goods, but also have so much history and heritage behind them, making them true icons in their countries.

Veniero’s, New York City, USA

Venieros first opened their doors in New York City way back in 1894, and even today, the bakery still offers a unique glimpse into old New York. Its patterned tiled floors and stained glass ceilings, enhanced by mirrored walls, will make you feel as though you have stepped back in time when you enter this shop.

This is a bakery with a heavy Italian influence. In fact, the founder has won several awards for his cakes and pastries, not only in New York but also in Rome and Bologna. You may have also seen this bakery featured on TV – from Good Morning America on ABC to Law & Order on NBC, this little shop has really made a name for itself.

Wondering what sort of baked goods they actually sell?

A few of their traditional Italian specialties include:

  • Italian butter cookies
  • Cannoli
  • Tiramisu
  • Biscotti
  • Cheesecake

Although traditional baked goods are what they focus on, this bakery also stays ahead of the game when it comes to getting creative. Their lobster tails are a mix between a traditional cannoli and a croissant – something that every pastry lover needs to try!

After sampling as much as possible, walk off all of that sugar by taking a stroll around New York City. Don’t forget to stop off at one of our OROGOLD stores; you’ll find three in the city, and each one is perfect for giving your skin a little pick-me-up if you’ve been indulging in overly-sweet baked goods.

A post shared by Zalatimo Sweets Co. (@zalatimosweets) on Jul 5, 2020 at 8:52am PDT

Established in 1860, Zalatimo Sweets began as a small pastry shop in Jerusalem’s Old City, with a sweet breakfast filo pastry called Mutabak being the shop’s specialty. Over time, the shop grew in popularity, until it expanded into an adjacent shop a few years later.

There are now 13 branches of Zalatimo Sweets, with most of these in Jordan. Their Middle Eastern pastries are now even being imported into the USA, where they are sold by Walmart.

Wondering what their Mutabak tastes like?

It’s sweet, warm, and crunchy, with a delicate powdered sugar topping. You can have it filled with toasted nuts or a tangy sheep’s cheese – either way, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find fresh Mutabak these days, meaning that most people flock to Zalatimo Sweets whenever they have a craving for this traditional pastry.

Not only are they the oldest patisserie in Copenhagen, but Conditori La Glace also prides themselves on being the best. It was founded back in 1880, and has since been through six generations of the same family.

The interior of this bakery looks just like a traditional tearoom, taking you straight back in time. The vast array of cakes available here is enough to impress anyone, with some of their most popular ones being:

  • The Sports Cake – this recipe was created in 1891 for a theater production called Sports Man. It features caramelized choux pastry, a macaroon layer at the bottom, and then a filling of whipped cream and crushed nougat
  • HC Hat – this cake won the Cake of the Year contest in 2005, and it’s easy to see why. Its chocolate biscuit base is topped with a caramel mousse, along with a caramel ganache that has been infused with citrus
  • Karen Blixen – this cake was inspired by Karen Blixen, a Danish author who had her own coffee farm in Africa. The recipe dates back to 1992, and consists of a chocolate bottom topped with a coffee mousse and a mocha truffle, along with toasted hazelnuts and chocolate decorations

If you’re interested in learning more about baking from the masters themselves, Conditori La Glace organizes courses that teach how to work with chocolate, as well as how to make their Sportskage (another of their delicious cakes). You can also attend lectures about the patisserie’s history and heritage.

Feeling thirsty?

Try the tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. This is the only place in Copenhagen that still serves these beverages from a pot, with refills on offer too. Many would say that this is a tradition well worth supporting!

Over 150 years of making pastries means this stuff is GOOD. * Start your day with a treat from the oldest bakery in Texas that dates back to 1868, which means they've perfected these classic German recipes. Famous for being the oldest bakery in Texas, Naegelin’s Bakery has been running since 1868. It is located in a 150-year old building, and many of its original features have been retained. You’ll even find a drive through window and a small retro-style patio here!

White bread was what the bakery was originally selling when they first opened, soon followed up by pumpernickel. After that, pastries became a focus, and the apple strudel produced here is famous for being one of the best in the world.

The ingredients used in these baked goods are locally-sourced, and the pastries and bread are always fresh. The opportunity to be able to sample a 150 year old recipe that still tastes amazing in this day and age is a great way to really take a step back into America’s past.

Can’t decide what to order?

Some of their must-try baked goods include:

  • Apple strudel (go for cherry or peach if you aren’t an apple fan)
  • Chocolate dip macaroon
  • Black Forest double layer cake
  • German chocolate pie
  • Pretzel sticks

If you’re not able to visit the store, the bakery also offers two day shipping, meaning that you can enjoy their delicious baked goods no matter where in the country you may be!

A historic, Parisian-style cafe, Cafe Tortoni was founded in Buenos Aires in 1858 by a French immigrant. It has moved locations just once since, and although it has not remained in the same family, the various owners over the years have all strived to retain this cafe’s historic charm.

While the baked goods here are always delectable, the cafe has also made a name for itself by being quite a trendy place to be. A number of celebrities have visited the cafe, which has also made an effort to involve itself in local art and culture. In the basement, you will find performances by jazz and tango musicians, along with poetry and book readings and contests. The cafe’s library, along with its traditional games room, adds to its old-time charm.

Hofbaeckerei Edegger-Tax is one of the oldest bakeries on this list, having been established way back in 1569. Although famous for its ornate wooden shop facade, which was hand-carved in 1896, what really sets this bakery apart is the high quality of their traditional baked goods.

There is a huge variety on offer here, from breads to pastries to cakes and cookies. For those wanting a bite of the past, this is the only bakery that sells the very same bread that was supplied to the House of Habsburg in Austria, which was one of the most influential royal houses in all of Europe.

Although this bakery specializes in traditional recipes, many of their long-time customers are celiac sufferers. As a result, the bakery has now come up with a full range of gluten-free products, which are proving to be extremely popular.

Recognized as being the oldest business in San Francisco that is still in operation, the Boudin Bakery has been around since 1849. They now have 29 locations around San Francisco, which should give you an idea of just how popular they have become!

What is this bakery known for?

They produce a variety of different baked goods, but sourdough is their specialty. They don’t use commercial yeast here, and instead have been using the same mother dough since they first began, giving you a distinct texture and flavor that you would never be able to find anywhere else.

In order to really showcase their talents, the bakery now serves up full meals that make use of their breads, from baguette burgers to sourdough pizzas.

If you would like to see some of their master bakers at work, head to the Boudin at the Wharf location – not only is this where you will find their famous cafe, but you will also be able to watch their breads being created through a 30 foot observation window. Even better, this is fitted out with a two-way intercom system, meaning that you can ask these master chefs any baking questions you may have.

Still want to learn more?

The bakery also has their own museum, free for people to tour. Learn more about San Francisco’s different emigrants, as well as how the bakery’s famous sourdough is actually made.

Once you have eaten your fill, head on over to the OROGOLD San Francisco store. All of those carbs won’t be doing your skin any favors, making this the perfect stop to give your skin a little TLC.

No list about bakeries would be complete without a mention of one in Paris, and La Maison Stohrer happens to be the oldest in the city. It was opened in 1730, and earned its reputation by being a favorite amongst royal families.

Creativity has always been important for this bakery – this is where Baba au Rhum was created – a brioche pastry that has been soaked in rum syrup and filled with candied fruits. There are now several different versions available, with this being one of their must-try pastries.

The bakery also has a restaurant that serves up an incredible savory spread of starters and mains, with breads, pastries, and baking-related cooking techniques taking center stage on the menu. Everything is made on-site and is always fresh, guaranteeing a delicious meal with each and every visit.

Baked goods play a huge part in many cultures and traditions around the world, making it important to support those older businesses that are trying their best to keep history alive. Whether you’re in the mood for a sweet treat or a classic loaf, a visit to one of these bakeries will never disappoint.

If you want to treat yourself to the life of luxury, you won’t ever go wrong with the Ritz-Carlton. This five star hotel is located in the buzzing Marina Bay district of Singapore, with rooms offering sweeping, panoramic views of this vibrant area.

Every guest room, along with their marble bathrooms, boast this incredible view, with the decadently inviting tubs encouraging guests to sit back, relax, and soak up their surroundings.

What Else Does the Hotel Offer?

In addition to the view, this hotel has so much more on offer, including:

  • A five star spa with special, signature treatments
  • A 4200-piece art collection, with many pieces from world-renowned artists, including Andy Warhol
  • A Michelin-starred restaurant
  • A large outdoor pool with sun loungers and private cabanas

What’s There to Do Nearby?

Singapore isn’t big, and the location of this hotel makes it the perfect base from where you can explore the entire island. However, if you don’t want to venture too far, there is also plenty to do in the Marina Bay area.

Gardens by the Bay is a must-see, cutting-edge botanical garden, while the Merlion is a national icon. The Singapore Flyer, along with the Marina Bay Sands Skypark, will reward you with even more aerial views of the city.

Of course, the luxury stores in this area can’t be ignored either. You will find some of the best brands in the world here, including an OROGOLD store in the Marina Bay Sands mall, where you can enjoy product demonstrations and VIP facials.

The Outpost, Kruger National Park – South Africa

Wake up to this view.

A post shared by The Outpost Lodge (@theoutpostlodge) on Dec 15, 2019 at 11:27pm PST

Let’s face it – even on its own, the Kruger National Park is absolutely amazing. However, throw in a five star luxury lodge and you’ve got the recipe for a truly unforgettable vacation.

This hotel takes the open-plan concept to the next level – guest rooms don’t have any windows, giving you seamless views out over the wild African bush. With the hotel having just 12 suites, it never gets too busy, enabling you to enjoy the landscape uninterrupted.

What Else Does the Hotel Offer?

The international restaurant here serves up quality meals, but you can also request for a table to be set up for you somewhere else within the hotel’s grounds, meaning that you can enjoy personalized views with every meal.

The hotel also has a beautiful pool, and makes use of eco-friendly products.

Guests can go out on two game drives a day, giving them the chance to see the Big Five, along with Africa’s other legendary wildlife.

What’s There to Do Nearby?

The Outpost is in an area of total wilderness. In fact, this area used to be completely inaccessible to visitors, meaning that there isn’t too much else to do nearby. The nearest town, Louis Trichardt, is a three hour car journey away.

However, the lack of nearby activities is exactly what makes this hotel so appealing. For those who want to take some time out from their busy lives (and this is exactly what will happen, since WiFi here can be shaky), and simply make the most of what the natural world has to offer, this is the perfect spot to visit.

7 Exciting New Flight Routes for Your 2020 Travel Plans

Aerial view of Montreal

Ever wished that it were easier to plan your travel adventures around the world?

Having to schedule multiple stops for inter-connecting flights can make the travel experience so much more stressful, which is why a direct flight to the destination of your choice is always the preferred option.

Well, you’re in luck, because 2020 has brought with it a number of new airline routes opening up all over the world. No matter where you live in the USA, chances are that an airport near you will now be giving you the opportunity to book a non-stop flight to an exciting new destination.

New Jersey to New Zealand

Steps leading to lighthouse

It used to take over 20 hours to fly from New Jersey to New Zealand, and every route out there would include at least one stop. Well, that’s all set to change at the end of October 2020, when Air New Zealand begins one of their longest long-haul flight routes, traveling between Newark and Auckland.

The new 8,800 mile route will take around 17 hours and 40 minutes and will operate three times a week, saving you quite a bit of time.

Never been to Auckland before?

There’s plenty to do here, such as:

  • Taking in the breathtaking landscapes at Waiheke Island and Rangitoto Island
  • Exploring the Waitomo Glowworm Caves
  • Visiting some of the best museums in the country, including the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki and the Auckland War Memorial Museum
  • Checking out some of the city’s family-friendly attractions, such as the Auckland Zoo and the Sky Tower

Love the sound of Auckland but put off by an almost-18 hour flight?

Don’t worry, if you’re willing to splurge, Air New Zealand offers a Skycouch service, where you can turn an entire row of economy seats into a flat-lie option. The plane that will be traveling this route is also known for its higher humidity levels, meaning that you won’t need to deal with 18 hours of dehydration either.

Dallas to St. Thomas

View of St Thomas and boats

The US Virgin Islands has seen a huge surge in tourism in recent years, so it only makes sense for airlines to try to capitalize on this as much as possible, adding these Caribbean islands to their itineraries.

Well, that’s exactly what American Airlines did at the end of December 2019, adding in two new routes to St. Thomas from both Chicago and Dallas. Although the Chicago route is a seasonal one, the Dallas route is set to operate year-round, giving you plenty of opportunities to go soak up that Caribbean vibe.

Wondering what there is to do in St. Thomas?

This cosmopolitan city is famous for its beaches, and boasts some of the most exquisite snorkeling spots in the entire world.

St. Thomas is also known for being one of the best places to shop in all of the Caribbean. Main Street in Downtown Charlotte Amalie is always popular, as is the upscale Yacht Haven Grande, complete with luxury yachts mooring at the dock here. While exploring this area, be sure to also stop off at the OROGOLD Virgin Islands store to treat your skin to some complimentary product demonstrations.

Of course, the local food in St. Thomas isn’t to be missed either…

The fresh seafood will be some of the best you have ever tasted, while kallaloo, a stew made from leafy greens, meat and okra, is another dish that your taste buds will love. Pate is also popular here, whether made from meat, fish or vegetables, while the sweet, coconut-derived Dumb bread is the perfect way to end a meal.

Don’t live near Dallas but still want a direct flight to St. Thomas?

There are a few other routes opening up in 2020, including a Delta flight from Atlanta and another United flight from Houston.

Boston to Vienna

Architecture in Vienna

If you live in Boston and have always wanted to visit Austria, chances are that you were put off by the complete lack of non-stop flights. Well, that’s all about to change in October 2020, as this is when Austrian Airlines will be beginning their new regular route between Vienna and Boston.

The only downside to this is that prices are likely to remain quite high, since there are no other airlines offering this same route.

However, if you don’t mind paying for convenience, then this flight will take you directly from Boston to Vienna International Airport, after which it’s just a short ride away to the city center.

Now, for those of you who aren’t familiar with the city…

Vienna is the capital of Austria, and sits at the east of the country. It is famous for its musical past, with its historic residents including Mozart and Beethoven. The city has also birthed many legendary artists, such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, making it a true hub for creativity.

The architecture around Vienna is something else that the city is unique for. St. Stephen’s Cathedral, which has been around for over 700 years, is a great example of this, as is Hofburg Palace and the Rathaus, otherwise known as City Hall.

As you can imagine, Vienna is a very picturesque city, making it well worth a visit for any of you Boston residents out there.

Philadelphia to Casablanca

At the moment, there are no U.S airlines that fly to Morocco, which is why the new route being opened by American Airlines, which travels between Philadelphia and Casablanca, is extremely exciting. Although this is just a seasonal service, operating between June and September 2020, it is still an incredible opportunity to visit this exotic city.

New York to Mumbai

Train station and street in Mumbai

There has been an increasing demand in flights from the USA to Mumbai in recent years, with much of this coming from New York. Of course, with Mumbai being the financial center of India, this only makes sense, which is why Delta Airlines is stepping up.

Now, the Delta flight route between New York and Mumbai isn’t technically new at all…

The airline first started offering this route in 2006, but then had to close it down in 2009. However, this daily route is now set to be traveled once again, with flights leaving from New York JFK. The service began running in December 2019, and has done extremely well so far.

So, for all of you New Yorkers who have been yearning to experience the true heart and soul of India, now’s your chance! Mumbai is big, busy, noisy and chaotic. This is a city full of contrasts, home to some of the most expensive homes in the world, as well as some of the largest slums in Asia. In addition to being a financial center, it is also considered to be India’s fashion hub, and is home to India’s prolific Bollywood industry too.

For first time visitors, the city can initially seem overwhelming, so here are a few things to put on your itinerary:

  • A visit to the Gateway of India monument, which is a great place to begin exploring Mumbai by foot
  • Touring some of the historic colonial buildings around the city, including the Kala Goda art precinct, the Bombay High Court, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum and the buildings around Horniman Circle
  • A visit to Haji Ali, which is a mosque as well as a tomb, and is only accessible via a 500 yard walkway at low tide
  • Shopping at the many markets and local bazaars – try Colaba Causeway for clothes and shoes,  Chor Bazaar for antiques, and Crawford Market for fresh food and spices, as well as incredible architecture
  • Go on a tour of Film City to learn more about Mumbai’s famous Bollywood industry

San Diego to Montreal

Aerial view of Montreal

While there are direct flights to Montreal from many U.S cities, those who live in San Diego have had to go without…until now. Beginning in June 2020, Air Transat will be flying between San Diego and Montreal three times a week, with this seasonal service running until the end of October 2020.

Never flown with Air Transat before?

Well, in 2019, for the second year running, Air Transat was voted as the best leisure airline in the world, thanks to their friendly service, top-class entertainment systems, kids club, and flexible fares.

For those of you visiting Montreal for the first time, this Canadian city, which is the largest in the country, sits on an island, making it incredibly picturesque. The first place to go is Mount Royal, a large volcanic hill that offers spectacular views of downtown Montreal, as well as the south bank’s mountains.

The city also boasts some gorgeous historic buildings, such as the Notre-Dame Basilica, where you will find one of the most ornate gothic facades you have ever seen, along with its famous organ.

Of course, Montreal is also known for being a popular foodie destination. In fact, Montreal has more restaurants per capita than New York City! One of the best ways to taste your way around Montreal is with a food tour, and there are certainly plenty to choose from. If you would rather venture out on your own, make sure that you try the local specialty of poutine, as well as some Montreal-style pastrami.

San Francisco to Warsaw

City of Warsaw

Poland is becoming quite the travel destination, with an increasing number of attractions to offer its visitors. Sadly, there were not many direct flights from the USA to Poland to choose from, which is why LOT Polish Airlines have introduced four new non-stop routes to various Polish cities. In addition to the San Francisco to Warsaw leg, you can also choose from:

  • New York to Krakow
  • Washington, D.C. to Warsaw
  • Chicago to Krakow (this one is with American Airlines)

With all of these new routes opening up, chances are that fare prices will drop too, making this a win-win!

So, the San Francisco to Warsaw route will be starting in August 2020, with this being a year-round service. With Warsaw being the capital of Poland, this is the best place to go to immerse yourself in Polish life and culture, with the city’s Old Town being the ideal spot to begin. This area dates back to the 13th century, although many of the buildings here have been rebuilt. Still, the preservation that has taken place in this district has been enough to grant it protected status by UNESCO.

There are numerous churches, monuments and museums to visit throughout Warsaw, but make sure to also save some time to explore the city’s creative side. From trendy craft breweries to fascinating cultural events to quirky art galleries, Warsaw is bursting with creative energy.

While a stop or two isn’t usually a big deal when you are heading to your dream destination, it definitely does make it much more convenient to also have the option of a direct flight. Whether you have been wanting to explore historic European cities, or relax on a tropical beach, these seven new flight routes will open up a world of possibilities for you for 2020!

Shaken or Stirred: The 7 Best Martini Spots in San Francisco

San Francisco street and trams

Many claim that the martini was invented in San Francisco, at a bar in Martinez. Whether this may be true or not, there is no denying that some of the best martinis in the country can be found in San Francisco, with the city really knowing its stuff when it comes to crafting this classic cocktail.

If you want to taste some of the finest martinis in the city, here are the bars that conjure up the very best.

1) Whitechapel

View this post on Instagram

Have you met this spicy member of the Martini’s extended family, “The Ghost of a Genius?” This stirred cocktail starts with a base of @rutte_distillery Celery Gin that is beautifully matched with a pickle-spiced dry vermouth and turmeric pickling brine. The addition of lemon-celery bitters adds the perfect bit of brightness that gives this martini a “twist” to go with its house-pickled cocktail onion.

A post shared by WhitechapelSF (@whitechapelsf) on Apr 6, 2019 at 1:04pm PDT

Home to the largest gin selection in all of North America, Whitechapel is a fun and quirky bar, decked out in a way that makes it feel as though you have stepped into a Victorian train station. The bar is proud to serve up more than 600 different gins, and even have a bespoke house gin made exclusively for them, making Whitechapel a must for any gin lovers out there.

The Martinis

As you can imagine, with so many gins on offer, the cocktail menu at Whitechapel is pretty long. The martini reigns supreme here, with the menu featuring an entire section dedicated to the way in which the martini has evolved from the 1840’s to the 1950’s.

Here are some of the members of Whitechapel’s “martini family tree”:

  • The Gin Sangaree from 1862 – featuring Bols Genever, Port Wine, Water, Sugar and Nutmeg
  • The Dundorado Cocktail from 1900 – featuring Ransom Old Tom Gin, Italian Vermouth and Calisaya
  • The Fairbank Cocktail from 1922 – featuring Bombay London Dry Gin, French Vermouth, Creme de Noyeaux and Orange Bitters
  • The Vesper Martini from 1953 – featuring Gordons London Dry Gin, Vodka and Kina
The Food

The food at Whitechapel is a tantalizing fusion of world street foods and classic British cuisine. They do several different light bites, from grilled sandwiches and flatbreads to sharing platters and hand pies. They also serve up a few bigger meals, including grilled kebabs wraps, fish and chips and their signature burger.

2) Blondie’s Bar

We're ready for a close-up. 🍸 Come grab yours till 2am. 😎 . Shouts to @mosherkeith for the awesome feature!

A post shared by Blondie's Bar (@blondiesbarsf) on Aug 20, 2019 at 1:18pm PDT

Blondie’s Bar specializes in two things – live music and martinis. Of course, the two go hand-in-hand together, meaning that an evening at Blondie’s is one that you will definitely enjoy. The bar is lively, energetic and always filled with a happy buzz, with the live music ranging from Honky Tonk and Blues to 70’s Flashback and Hip Hop.

The Martinis

The first thing that you should know about the martinis at Blondie’s Bar is that they are served up in impressive 16 oz glasses, ensuring that you always have plenty to drink. Their cocktail menu is awe-inspiring, with some of their most popular martinis being:

  • The Almond Mocha, which is served in a chocolate-rimmed glass
  • The Deep Blue Funk, which tastes just like a blueberry freeze pop
  • The Mission, which is served up with a spicy string bean garnish
  • The G Spot, which is a simple raspberry cosmo with a refreshing lemon twist

Of course, the best martinis come with a garnish, and Blondie’s Bar certainly has a wide variety of garnishes for customers to choose from. Some of the most unique include:

  • Housemade spicy sausage-stuffed olives
  • Blue cheese stuffed olives, also housemade
  • Ginger stuffed olives – another housemade specialty
  • Gherkin-stuffed olives
  • Pickled asparagus
  • Tomolives
The Food

While the incredible garnish selection may lead you to believe that Blondie’s Bar serves up some creative food too, this is where you would be wrong. Of course, olives are always available, as are a few other bar snacks, but don’t come to Blondie’s expecting a full meal.

If you’re curious about the name of this restaurant, it was inspired by the date at which India gained its independence from the British. Yes, that’s right, August (1) Five is an Indian restaurant – one that uses traditional techniques to cook up modern Indian cuisine.

The Martinis

Why settle for one martini when you could have three?

That’s exactly what August (1) Five offers with their Martini Flight, which consists of:

  • A Summer Negroni
  • A Roasted Onion Gibson
  • A Truffle Manhattan

The restaurant’s Holi Cow martini is another popular choice, with turmeric gin, chartreuse, vermouth, black pepper, ginger and citrus – punchy yet refreshing!

The Food

Being one of the most popular Indian restaurants in the city, you probably want to know a little more about what the food is like at August (1) Five…

Well, expect classic Indian dishes with a twist. Some of the items on the menu include:

  • Braised duck leg with spaghetti squash, spices and a five spice jus
  • Potato and fig kofta with cashew, melon seeds and green chilli
  • Lamp chops with a pistachio dust, charred vegetables and a beet jelly

If you happen to be visiting at the end of 2020, you will be lucky enough to sample the restaurant’s special four course tasting menu. Again, this menu features Indian-inspired dishes but with a Californian twist.

4) Wildhawk

Wednesday kicking off steady at Wildhawk! • • • • • • #drinkingbird #allbirds #martini #piolin @cocktailgeek

A post shared by Wildhawk (@wildhawk_sf) on Mar 7, 2018 at 5:00pm PST

Many would consider Wildhawk to be quite the hidden gem – although the bar serves up some incredible cocktails, it doesn’t have the same amount of foot traffic as some of the other bars in the city, making this the perfect spot to relax and unwind with a martini.

The bar itself is friendly and lively, with a slight bohemian vibe to it, while their cocktail menu makes use of innovative techniques and ingredient combinations.

The Martinis

The House Martini is what most people come for. If one of your pet peeves is a warm martini, you won’t need to worry about here – Wildhawk serves theirs up with an accompanying sidecar in a frozen sake bottle, ensuring that your drink stays chilled without the risk of being watered down.

Of course, creativity is key, especially in San Francisco, which is why Wildhawk features a prominent industry member each month, inviting them to share their favorite martini. This month, the featured martini is called the Seaside Sling, and was inspired by a classic pear and stilton sandwich. The recipe contains:

  • Martin Millers Gin
  • Cocchi Americano
  • Belle de Brillet Pear Liqueur
  • Scrappy’s Black Lemon Bitters
  • Lime Twist
  • A Castlevetrano Olive stuffed with Blue Cheese
The Food

Food isn’t one of the main focuses at Wildhawk, but they still serve up a selection of nibbles that perfectly accompany their drinks. From cheese boards to meat boards to olive bowls, this isn’t the spot to head to if you’re after a full meal, but the offerings are enough to balance out the martinis.

5) The Vault

The Vault is a restaurant that focuses on modern Californian cuisine, with all of its dishes showcasing the produce from local farms and producers. The restaurant does have a bar and lounge area dedicated to their creative craft cocktails, with their signature martini being one of the most popular in the city.

The Martinis

The house Vault Martini is definitely a must-order. You have a choice of two spirits for this classic cocktail:

  • Tito’s Vodka
  • Ford’s Gin

Your spirit of choice will be served up with a housemade pickle brine and Dolin Vermouth, and can be either shaken or stirred.

The Food

As mentioned above, The Vault prides themselves on their food, so it would be a shame to visit for the martinis alone. The mouthwatering food menu consists of mains such as:

  • Wild mushroom risotto with squash, pepitas and roasted scallion
  • Pan-roasted day boat scallops with caviar, mussels and sweet peppers, in a green curry sauce
  • Chicken stuffed with truffles and served with apples, endives and parsnips

If you simply can’t make up your mind, you can always opt for the family-style tasting menu, which features samples of the restaurant’s finest dishes.

The martinis here are served up in large glasses, and there is an extensive menu to choose from that features everything from classics to modern innovations.

Give the Flower (Em)Power a try – Tanqueray that has been infused with rose, hibiscus, lavender and violets, mixed with Campari and strawberry vermouth.

The Food

7) John’s Grill

Come cool off with Dashiell Hammett's favorite classic extra chilled martini! @greygoose @sanfrancisco @johnsgrillsf . . . . . #powerlunch #martini #sanfrancisco #johnsgrillsf #sfchronicle #maltesefalcon #bar

A post shared by Historic John’s Grill (@johnsgrillsf) on Sep 1, 2017 at 3:03pm PDT

With live jazz music every night, John’s Grill is always full of life and energy, making it one of the city’s most-loved dining spots. Having opened its doors way back in 1908, John’s Grill is now a San Francisco legend, especially since this was the first restaurant in downtown San Francisco to open after the city’s devastating earthquake.

The decor features period furnishings and dark walls that are lined with hundreds of photo frames showcasing important local figures. Their menus, both for food and drink, have clearly been painstakingly curated, leaving you certain that you’re ordering nothing but the very best.

The Martinis

The star of the show and the most popular martini at John’s Grill has got to be the Hammett’s Classic Martini, made with Grey Goose Vodka and Dry Vermouth, served either shaken or stirred.

If you have a bit of a sweet tooth, give the Pear Martini a try instead. This features the pear version of Grey Goose, along with sweet and sour and a small splash of ginger ale.

The Food

The food menu at John’s Grill makes use of local ingredients as much as possible, including plenty of fresh seafood. Whether you’re in the mood for prawns, snapper, salmon or a steak, the proteins on offer here are fresh and high quality.

The salads at John’s Grill also deserve a mention. You may not automatically assume that the salads at a grill restaurant are going to be anything special, but these really are. Featuring a variety of vegetables and proteins, along with their special creamy blue cheese vinaigrette dressing, these salads veer more towards decadent than healthy.

If you’re looking for a good martini in San Francisco, you won’t have to look too far. Just about everywhere you go in the city is a bar or restaurant that serves up this classic cocktail, and these seven spots are where you will find the very best.

Plan a City Tour of San Francisco

San Francisco
With so much to see and do in San Francisco, planning a tour of the city can often be quite overwhelming. However, thanks to the way in which San Francisco is so compact, it is actually very possible to see the main highlights of the city in just one day, and this itinerary will show you exactly how to do that.

Union Square
While Union Square may be steeped with history, it is best known today for being the heart of San Francisco’s shopping district. This open square is surrounded by high end boutiques, as well as a few independent stores, but be sure to keep an eye on the time so that you do not spend hours indulging in retail therapy, as there is still plenty more to see.

San Francisco Cable Cars
The San Francisco cable car system is the last manually operated cable car system in the world, and is iconic when it comes to San Francisco. The best route travels up the steep gradient of Nob Hill, passing through Chinatown before making its way down to Fisherman’s Wharf. Depending on how much time you have to spare, it could be worth disembarking at the intersection between Lombard and Hyde Streets, so that you can take a stroll along the meandering Lombard Street and enjoy the spectacular backdrop of the bay.

Touring Alcatraz
This world-famous prison is set on its very own island, and is easily accessible by a ferry, which you can board just a short walk away from Fisherman’s Wharf. The ferry ride is incredibly scenic, and once you reach the island, you can take an audio tour of prison. From touring the cell blocks to learning more about Alcatraz’s history, this is always a popular activity for those visiting San Francisco, so be sure to book your tickets for this tour well in advance.

North Beach
Also referred to as Little Italy, North Beach is home to numerous quaint Italian cafés and restaurants, and is the heart of the city’s Italian community. Columbus Avenue is worth exploring on foot, as you will be able to stop off at some of the area’s many different eclectic stores and boutiques, browsing the diverse array of goods available.

San Francisco Museum
Museums
For those that want to end their day with a dose of culture, there are a few worthwhile museums that you can choose from. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is always popular, as is the Contemporary Jewish Museum and the Museum of the African Diaspora. While you will not have time to visit them all, you can always check out current exhibits on their website before choosing the museum that appeals to you the most.

San Francisco is a vibrant and diverse city, and is filled with history, culture, art and an effervescent energy. From touring the famous prison of Alcatraz to taking a stroll around the bohemian North Beach, this city tour will show you some of the very best sights that San Francisco has to offer.

Where are Young Professionals Moving?

Over a million young professionals cross state lines each year, seeking out the best location in which to settle down. Recent research has shown that rather than being motivated solely by a fat paycheck, young professionals are seeking out a combination of different factors when it comes to finding a city to live in. From strong public transportation links to reasonable rent costs to ethnic diversity, these are the cities that have a fantastic balance of these features and are therefore attracting the country’s brightest young professionals.

US Capitol, Washington DC

Washington, DC
In recent years, Washington has experienced a 75% increase in the number of young adults that choose to live there, and is, without a doubt, the highest ranked city amongst young professionals. In addition to a downtown area that is positively packed with culture and entertainment, as well as a number of social opportunities, Washington is home to an abundance of potential jobs, from government to technical, promising a bright future for the young professionals that move to the city.

San Francisco, California
While San Francisco may have some of the highest average rent rates in the whole country, this is not too much of an issue for the young professionals that move here, as they are likely to earn figures that are also much higher than average. San Francisco’s technology industry is thriving, and for any young professionals who want to develop a career in technology, this is the ideal city in which to live.

Boston harbor

Boston, Massachusetts
Being home to Harvard, MIT and Tufts, among many other well-known names in education, it is no surprise that Boston attracts some of the country’s most intelligent young professionals. One of Boston’s biggest draws is the fact that not only is there so much to do in the city, but it is also easy to travel around without a car, significantly reducing the cost of living. Around 20% of commuters in Boston do not depend on a car, and this is something that strongly appeals to the young professionals of today.

New York City, New York
Just like with Boston, one of New York’s main attractions is that a car is not needed, and almost 40% of commuters in the city do not depend on a car. New York is also home to one of the most diverse populations when compared to other American cities, and has a fantastic range of social, entertainment and cultural activities. While rent costs may be high in New York, this is once again offset by higher than average earnings, making it well worthwhile for young professionals to choose to live in one of the world’s most popular cities.

By offering a mix of diversity, culture and excitement, these cities are some of the most popular among young professionals. This brings about a variety of advantages for each city, from a decrease in crime to a boost in the economy to an improvement in public schools, and while some fear that young professionals are only moving to these locations on a temporary basis, experts predict that a large number of them will stay, significantly contributing to the overall development of each city.

Top Chinese New Year Celebrations

Chinese New Year

Prapas Satong / Shutterstock.com

The Year of the Monkey may have begun on the 8th of February, but celebrations are far from over. For those of you that still want to join in on the festivities, these are some of the very best places around the world for celebrating Chinese New Year.

Beijing, China
China is, of course, the number one place to go if you really want to go all out to celebrate Chinese New Year. While most people in China’s big cities head home to smaller towns for the holiday, creating the largest annual human migration in the world, Beijing has a population of over 20 million residents, meaning that the city is a lively one to spend Chinese New Year. The city gets blanketed in red decorations, and temple fairs put on traditional shows, complete with authentic food stalls serving Chinese New Year specialities. This really is the mother of all Chinese New Year celebrations, and is definitely the city to visit if you want to experience festivities at their most authentic.

San Francisco, USA
Between the colors and events found in San Francisco’s Chinatown and the festivities hosted throughout the city, San Francisco’s Chinese New Year celebrations are some of the biggest and boldest that you will find outside of Asia. The two giant markets selling a variety of goods are a joy to explore, while the food stalls serving up authentic bites make tasty stopping points as you wander around. Visitors can expect to see 100 martial artists wearing a massive 268-foot dragon costume, acrobats dancing around the streets, stilt walkers taller than you’ve ever seen, and marching drumming bands giving the city a whole new rhythm, and, to top it all off, the spectacular sight of 600,000 exploding firecrackers. Another highlight of the holiday is the illuminated night parade, which is not only one of the few night parades in the US, but has also been named as one of the top ten parades in the world. This is the largest Asian cultural event in North America, and it never disappoints, earning itself such a reputation that it is now officially sponsored by Southwest Airlines.

Sydney, Australia
Sydney has quite an advantage over other cities when it comes to their Chinese New Year celebrations, as the days are still warm in the city at this time of the year, meaning that visitors need not worry about being outdoors in the cold. Over 600,000 visitors travel to Sydney for Chinese New Year each year for the variety of events that are hosted around the city. From a variety of art exhibits to a twilight parade to traditional dragon boat races, it is no surprise that the city is so popular for this holiday. You will also find smaller celebrations within different areas of the city, such as in Thai Town and Koreatown.

It does not matter where in the world you live, as you are likely to be able to find a Chinese New Year celebration near you. Even if they may not be as extravagant as the ones mentioned above, they will still give you a true taste of the holiday, as well as the invaluable experience of immersing yourself in another culture.

Weekend in San Francisco

You’re going to see the Golden Gate Bridge. There really is no way to avoid it when you go to San Francisco. If you don’t go or you fail to take pictures, then everyone you know is going to doubt you were ever there. Once you’ve gotten that social obligation out of the way though, you get to explore San Francisco on your own terms. A weekend in San Francisco is a distinctly picturesque way to experience part of California without ever leaving a city. Between the Golden Gate Bridge and famous neighborhoods, it often seem San Francisco was made for pictures. OROGOLD has a few other things to suggest beyond taking pictures of everything though.

Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

Visit Golden Gate Park
California has several large municipal parks and the Golden Gate Park is one of them. While not quite as sprawling as Griffith Park in Los Angeles, Golden Gate Park still encloses a variety of attractions. You can simply tour the park by foot on one of its many trails to get away from the city…or you can visit one of the aforementioned attractions. The De Young Museum will let you sample a bit of art while you’re in the park, but you might prefer the Steinhart Aquarium instead if you’re feeling a bit more zen. Two arboretums are available for you to wander if you want to take in beautiful flowers on a somehow rainy day, but on a clear day you should consider the Japanese Tea Garden. The latter is not only beautiful, but of historical interest as well.

Cable Car in San Francisco

Ride a Cable Car
Cable cars are as much a part of San Francisco as the Golden Gate Bridge itself. These moving antiques remain in excellent condition and offer you a chance to travel through the city at a slower rate to take in the sights. There are several lines that each ensure you’ll get your fair share of the taste of San Francisco. You can easily ride them through some of the more historical areas and hop off to explore when you see a likely candidate. But riding them all the way to the end will give you a true San Francisco experience and let you relax and enjoy the day at the same time. Just keep a tight grip if you’d don’t have a seat. Those hills are steep.

The Castro
The other thing a visit to San Francisco wouldn’t be complete without is a little bit of pride. This neighborhood is often a must for LGBT travelers, but certainly isn’t restricted to only them. It acts as at once a slice of civil rights history, a colorful enclave, and a great place to find a bite to eat or do a bit of shopping. The area is certainly flavored by its history though and signs of it are everywhere. There’s not guarantee of there always being a parade going on, but you certainly aren’t likely to find anyone bothering with being sedate. No matter why you visit The Castro, you’re sure to come away with a lighter step than you entered thanks to the lively locals.

Like all places in California, San Francisco is an eclectic mix of history and an absolute driving dedication to the here and now. Finding where to enjoy a week is simply a matter of getting in touch with the pulse of the city and seeing where it takes you. OROGOLD recommends talking to friendly locals on your way in or checking with a driver for other places to see. The ones here barely scratch the surface of what all you could do in a couple of days.
