Here are five cities that need to be on your itinerary…

New York

New York is frequently rated as the best shopping destination in the world, and it’s easy to see why. Everything from world-class department stores to bustling flea markets can be found in the city, catering to all types of shoppers.

If you’re looking for the best of the best, Madison Avenue is the road to head to first. Stretching out for 22 blocks, this street is lined with luxury brands, including the likes of Prada, Chanel, and Armani. This is also where you will find the OROGOLD Madison Avenue store, where you can treat your skin to VIP facials and product demonstrations.

On the other end of the scale is the Brooklyn Flea Market. This can be found in the Williamsburg area, and first opened in 2008. Since then, it’s expanded to include numerous vendors, making it the largest flea market in Brooklyn. Don’t be put off from visiting if you happen to be in New York over the winter, as the market moves to a 50,000 square foot indoor venue.

A few other notable shopping spots to visit in New York are:

  • Chelsea Market – this is a foodie’s paradise, with artisan cheese, homemade pasta, fine wine, and so much more
  • Macy’s – just about everyone has heard of this mall, which features 10.5 floors of everything from fashion and skin care to furniture and food
  • 5th Avenue – this is another luxury shopping street with several legendary brands, including Tiffany & Co., Armani, and Bergdorf Goodman
  • SoHo – this area is known for being exclusively chic. You’ll find art galleries, designer fashion stores, retro antique stores, and so much more

Dubai

Dubai is famous for being the main shopping hotspot in the Middle East. In addition to its chic and sleek shopping malls, the city is also bursting with traditional souks and other open air markets, giving you an exciting mix of both old and new.

The very first place to go is the Dubai Mall. With an internal floor area of 5.9 million square feet, this is the largest shopping mall in the world. You may think that this could be a bit of a headache to browse, but the mall is split into several sections that make it convenient to find what you need. Browse the latest designer garments at The Fashion Avenue, or check out the more casual vibe at The Village. This mall is also where you will find the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, as well as the SEGA Republic Indoor Theme Park.

Other notable malls in Dubai worth visiting are:

  • The Mall of the Emirates – this is the first shopping resort in the world, making the whole shopping experience so much more relaxing and even more enjoyable
  • WAFI Mall – this artistic mall is reminiscent of a museum, with its 150 shops surrounded by intricate decor and beautiful sculptures
  • Burjuman Centre – this mall exudes luxury, with some of the best brands in the world calling this mall home. From Christian Dior to Dolce and Gabbana to Hermes, you’ll find some of the most iconic designers in the world here

A shopping trip to Dubai wouldn’t be complete without spending some time haggling for a bargain at the local souks. There are numerous souks and markets sprinkled throughout the city, but some of the best are:

  • Deira Gold Souk – there are over 300 gold vendors selling around 10 tons of gold in this souk. Even if gold isn’t something on your shopping list, this one is still worth a visit, simply for the unique experience alone!
  • Bur Dubai Souk/Textile Souk – this market is all about textiles. From the stores selling raw silk, cashmere, and wool, to the traditional tailor shops that will transform those fabrics into one-of-a-kind creations, this is the souk to visit if you’re after some customized fashion
  • Perfume Souk – discover your new signature scent at the ultra-fragrant Perfume Souk. This maze-like market is lined with tiny stalls that are each stocked with a tantalizing array of perfumes and other such concoctions

Singapore

Many joke that the national pastime for Singaporeans is shopping, with this small island nation packed with an unbelievable number of stores and malls.

The main shopping street runs through the heart of the city, and is known as Orchard Road. You’ll find everything from quirky independent boutiques to gleaming mega malls here, making it no surprise that just about anything that you could need can be found on Orchard Road. Your best bet would be to start at one end and walk your way down, but give yourself at least a day or two to do this, since you’ll likely spend a few hours at each of the different malls.

Some of the best shopping malls on Orchard Road are:

  • Wisma Atria – home to fashion, accessories, and skin care, including an OROGOLD boutique store
  • Ngee Ann City – this Japanese-inspired mall is home to Takashimaya, which is the largest department store in the country, along with several other stores and services
  • Ion Orchard – after you’ve admired this mall’s contemporary architecture, you can easily spend a few hours browsing the 300 retail stores here, while also stopping in for a bite to eat at the many restaurants and cafes

Other notable shopping areas to visit include:

  • The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands – this mall is one of the most luxurious in Singapore. In addition to numerous premier brands, including Louis Vuitton and Tom Ford, you’ll also be able to dine at the many celebrity restaurants here
  • Funan – if you’re looking for the IT and electronics that Singapore is famous for, the recently refurbished Funan mall is the place to go
  • Suntec City – this mall is so large that it’s split into four wings, each one packed with a vibrant array of stores

Of course, Singapore isn’t only about designer malls and luxury brands. There are numerous markets around the city to browse too, including:

  • Bugis Street Market – just across the road from the sleek Bugis Mall, the Bugis Street Market specializes in low-cost, brightly-colored goods, making this the perfect place to go to bag yourself some souvenirs
  • Chinatown Street Markets – traditional but upscale Chinese goods can be found here, from artisan chopsticks to sophisticated calligraphy scrolls
  • So Galem Market – this buzzing flea market sells lots of homemade goods, from flower arrangements to candles

London

Oxford Circus in London

With London being such a cosmopolitan city, the shopping options here are truly varied, and that’s exactly what makes it shopping in London such a thrill.

Considered to be the busiest street in London, Oxford Street is also the city’s main shopping street. There are more than 300 shops, malls, and outlets here, with everything from quirky British fashion designers to international luxury brands. This is also where you will find Selfridges, one of the most famous shopping malls in the city.

Oxford Street may be diverse, but if upscale is what you’re looking for, then Knightsbridge is the place to go. This is where you will find the world-famous Harrods, which sprawls out across four and a half acres and stocks just about everything that you could imagine, accompanied with a high price tag.

Other popular London spots that shopaholics will adore include:

  • King’s Road – favored by many local celebrities, King’s Road is loved for its designer fashion and interior design stores, along with its vintage boutiques
  • Carnaby Street – a popular name in the 1960’s, Carnaby Street still has a lot going for it, with many cutting-edge clothing brands calling this street home
  • Westfield – unlike most of the other shopping centers you’ll see around London, Westfield is more American-style. There are over 300 retailers selling their goods here, along with a separate section of the mall called The Village, where you will find luxury fashion and an elegant champagne bar
  • Notting Hill – this is another area that is world-famous, partly due to the movie with the same name. Just like in the movie, real life Notting Hill is also boho-chic central, with numerous vintage designer boutiques lining the streets

Sydney

Shopping street in Sydney

Sydney definitely holds its own compared to the other cities on this list when it comes to retail therapy, with some of the best brands in the world found in the capital of New South Wales. Locals love staying atop of the latest trends, and this is mirrored by everything sold in Sydney’s stores.

One of the most iconic shopping malls in the city is Pitt Street Mall. This is the mall that basically has everything, from international fashion brands to jewelry and accessories. It’s a large mall, but once you’ve managed to finish browsing all that’s available, you’ll notice that there are several other smaller malls and shopping arcades that branch off from Pitt Street Mall, meaning that it will be a while before you’re actually done shopping in this area.

One of the malls that branches off from Pitt Street Mall is Westfield Sydney, where you’ll find several famous department stores, including Myer and David Jones. Intermingled with local brands are big-name designers, from Givenchy to Chanel to Calvin Klein.

Other shopping hotspots in Sydney are:

  • World Square – there are several popular clothing and cosmetics stores here, along with a good selection of eateries, making it easy to spend the entire day here
  • The Rocks Precinct – famous for its handmade goods and luxury fashion, as well as a large duty free shopping store. While you’re here, take a short stroll over to George Street, where you can treat your skin to some love and appreciation at the OROGOLD store
  • Harbourside Shopping Centre – if you like to enjoy a view while shopping, then the waterfront location of the Harbourside Shopping Centre won’t disappoint. In addition to shops, there are also several exquisite restaurants here, as well as movie theaters, bowling alleys, and more
  • Queen Victoria Building – this 19th century building in the CBD was originally built to be a local marketplace, which is why it takes over an entire city block. However, today it is home to over 100 different stores that sell everything from artisan foods to luxury fashion to fine art, all housed in the most elaborate of architectural styles

If you want a change of scene from shopping malls, spend some time browsing Sydney’s eclectic range of markets. Some of the most popular include:

  • Carriageworks Farmers Market – a foodie’s dream come true, with 70 different stalls selling everything from aged cheeses to organic nuts to freshly baked artisanal breads
  • Kirribilli Art, Design and Fashion Market – this monthly market is divided into two sections. The first is for fashion, which heavily features emerging designers, and the second is all about Art and Design, with homeware, ceramics, and so much more
  • The Rocks Market – this market is where all tourists go for unique souvenirs. Buy your loved ones back home an original print of Australian wildlife, eco-friendly jewelry, or gold-dipped native leaves
  • Paddington Markets – this is where Australian fashion brand Zimmermann began, and the market today continues to support up-and-coming designers. There are 150 stores to browse, selling a mixture of fashion, jewelry, and art, making this the market of choice for those who like to find the next big fashion trend
  • Manly Market – locals love this market for the fresh organic food sold here, along with the freshly cut flowers. However, you’ll also find stalls selling retro items and giftware, along with snacks that are perfect for spending the day at the nearby Manly Beach

Just about every city in the world has something to offer when it comes to shopping, but if you really want to be spoilt for choice, then these five cities are the places to go. From the laid-back vibe of Sydney to the bustling energy of New York City, any shopaholic planning their dream shopping trip will need to visit each of these destinations.

8 Outdoor Activities You Didn’t Know You Could Do in Singapore

Nature walk

Singapore is famous for its glittering skyline studded with skyscrapers, as well as its food scene, shopping, museums, and various tourist attractions.

It’s not really a place that many would think to visit solely for outdoor activities, but Singapore has a surprising amount to offer. Whether you want to work up a sweat on a cross-country trek or scuba dive to the depths of the South China Sea to explore the local marine environment, here are eight outdoor activities you didn’t know you could do in Singapore.

A Cross-Country Hike

Singapore is a small island, so a cross-country hike won’t take as long as you are probably expecting.

The Coast to Coast (CTC) Trail is one of the best ways to do this. This 36km trail links Coney Island in the north-east of the country to Jurong, which lies in the west. It usually takes about seven hours to complete, although this depends on how often you stop to explore various areas that catch your interest.

The trail takes you through some of the island’s most impressive outdoor areas, from the world-famous Singapore Botanic Gardens to the beautiful and serene Macritchie Reservoir. Try to plan your hike so that it ends at the Jurong trail head – this area is home to some exquisite shopping malls and restaurants, such as the Westgate mall, where you will be able to treat your skin to some free luxury product demonstrations at the OROGOLD store here.

If you would prefer to see more of the city, the Central Urban Loop is another 36km trail that takes you through the heart of Singapore. On the other hand, beach lovers will love the 42km Eastern Coastal Loop, which links seven parks and beaches together.

For those wanting more of a challenge, the 150km Round Island Route is another popular option. Although the trail is still being officially established, there’s nothing to stop you from taking your own route through areas that haven’t yet been finished.

Adventurous Mountain Biking

Chestnut Park in Singapore

For those who love to get their adrenaline pumping while on two wheels, head on over to the largest nature park in Singapore; the 81 hectare Chestnut Park.

Located in the southern side of the park, the 1.8km mountain biking trail has been designed to offer numerous challenges to bikers as a way to keep locals returning.

The trail certainly lives up to that aim, with a number of different jumps, sharp corners, and berms to keep you on your guard.

Unlike many of the other mountain biking trails out there, this one doesn’t have uncomfortably steep climbs. Instead, it makes use of the landscape’s natural gradients to take you on gentle climbs, while still offering up thrilling downhills sections.

Don’t have a mountain bike of your own?

Not to worry, as you can rent one from the kiosk at the park, while also picking up a few refreshments to take with you on your ride.

Once you’re ready to take things a little slower, spend some time exploring the incredible biodiversity that you will find throughout the park. There are numerous native tree species planted here, from the Singapore Walking Stick Palm to the Braided Chestnut Tree, many of which are hard to see anywhere else in the world.

Kayak Through the Mangroves

Kayaking is often one of the best ways to explore a natural area, as it gives you such a unique perspective of the biodiversity all around you.

It’s also a great activity for beginners – those who have never kayaked before are able to try something new yet safe, while kayaking experts can indulge themselves by paddling over to some of the more challenging river sections.

The best place to go for a kayaking stint is the Mandai Rivers; Sungei Mandai Besar and Sungei Mandai Kechil.

Here, you will find mature mangroves that offer up the perfect mini adventure, intermingled with remnants of one of the last kampongs, meaning traditional villages, on the island.

Wildlife encounters are also common when kayaking in this area. In addition to spotting some of the 112 bird species seen above, you may also have the chance to see dolphins, kingfishers, and hornbills, as well as the largest resident population of mangrove horseshoe crabs in the world.

If you’ve already kayaked along the Mandai mangroves, or enjoyed it so much that you’re looking for more water adventures, other good kayaking spots around the country include:

  • The Seringat Trail, which takes you from the sandy beaches of Sentosa to the equally-picturesque beaches of Seringat Island
  • Sungei Khatib Bongsu, where you will find lush umbrellas of native canopies above as you make your way down a natural river

Many of these areas are only accessible by kayak, giving you a glimpse into a part of the country that most tourists never get to see.

Bird Watching and Wildlife Spotting

Coney Island, Singapore

Uharsha / Shutterstock.com

If you want to spend some time in nature, then Coney Island is the place to go.

This 133 hectare island hasn’t been around for long – it only officially opened in 2015, and comes from land that has been reclaimed, with the process beginning back in the 1970s.

Today, this is one of the rare places in Singapore that features mostly untouched surroundings. There is such a diversity of different habitats here, from coastal forests and lush grasslands to hidden sandy beaches and dense mangroves.

All of this makes Coney Island a chosen spot for local wildlife, many species of which are endangered. Rare birds, butterflies, and native macaques are just a few of the creatures that you will see here, as well as plenty of snakes if you decide that you are brave enough to venture off-path!

Coney Island is also a part of Singapore that’s truly dedicated to sustainability. You will notice quite a bit of woodcrafting around the park, from rustic benches to signposts to a beautiful mangrove boardwalk – all of this has been created from wood harvested from fallen trees around the island.

A Stroll Through History

Outdoor activities don’t necessarily have to be strenuous.

Instead, a leisurely stroll through a natural yet historic area can be so fascinating and educational, which is exactly what you will find at the Thomson Nature Park.

There are five trails here that you can take, each one taking about an hour or so to explore.

Some of the different natural and historic features that you will be able to see include:

  • Rare wildlife, such as the Raffles banded langur, an endangered monkey, the Malayan porcupine, and the Sunda pangolin
  • The ruins of a Hainan village from the 1960s
  • An old rambutan plantation
  • An old farm and traditional village houses, including old street signs

Bungy Jumping

For those who really want to kick things up a notch, give bungy jumping a try.

There is only one place in Singapore where you can go bungy jumping, and this is at the Sky Park by AJ Hackett on Sentosa island.

This bungy jump stands 50 meters above the beautiful Siloso Beach, giving you incredible views as you take the leap. To add to the experience even further, you can also opt to end your jump in the warm waters of the bungy pool set up below.

Don’t want to go it alone?

You don’t have to if you give the Giant Swing a try. This one-of-a-kind experience can accommodate up to three people, taking you 40 meters above Siloso Beach where you then swoop downwards on a giant swing.

The Top Swing is another option for solo adrenaline seekers. Enjoy your favorite childhood playground activity, but 47 meters above the ground with your dangling feet pointing towards the sandy beach below.

If the idea of bungy jumping or swinging through the air just doesn’t appeal to you…

This venue also boasts a Skybridge, which also runs 47 meters above the ground. This bridge is completely safe for people of all abilities to try – although it may be exposed with some see-through sections, as well as a stomach-churning glass cube, it can be enjoyed as a leisurely stroll.

Once you’re done with all of that, you will find a relaxing beach bar located just nearby. Whether you want to make the most of being back on solid ground by laying out on the beach, or want to enjoy some privacy in a cabana, AJ’s Bar and Beach Dining is always a hit with both locals and tourists.

Zip Line Through the Sky

Zip lining in Singapore

fly_route / Shutterstock.com

Sentosa is known for being home to a wide range of different activities. In addition to kayaking, bungy jumping, hiking, and more, you also have the opportunity to zip line through the trees.

MegaZip can be found at Siloso Beach, not too far away from the bungy jumping venue listed above.

Here, you will find the very first three-wire zip line in the region, meaning that you will be able to race your friends and family as you speed 60 km per hour through the air, with the line running for an exhilarating 450 meters.

The zip line sits 75 meters above the ground, giving you an amazing birds-eye view of the island down below.

Snorkeling and Diving

Singapore’s unique location means that waters around the island are packed with an abundance of marine life.

One of the best ways to experience this up-close and personal is by heading into the water with a snorkel or your scuba diving gear.

Where should you go?

The Sisters’ Islands Marine Park, which actually consists of two small islands:

  • Pulau Subar Laut (Big Sister’s Island)
  • Pulau Subar Darat (Small Sister’s Island)

The second isn’t currently open to the public, since it is being used for conservation and habitat enhancement to encourage species recovery. This is where the first turtle hatchery in Singapore is, with a large amount of research and technology being dedicated to increase the survival rate of hatchlings.

However, Big Sister’s Island is all you need.

Many would say that this is one of Singapore’s best hidden gems, as many locals themselves don’t even know about the endless fun that can be had on this gorgeous speck of land.

Both snorkeling and diving can be enjoyed here, with divers in particular being especially well-catered for with two dive trails to choose from. One is shallow and one is deep, showcasing how different the marine biodiversity is at each of these levels.

There are plenty of great swimming spots here too, but once you’re done exploring the water, take a look at everything that Big Sister’s Island has to offer on land too. Sheltered beaches and intertidal walks are just a few of the things that you will come across, each one surrounded by beautiful, untouched nature.

The only downside to Sister’s Islands is…

There isn’t any public transportation to take you here – you will need to charter a boat. This can be done from the Marina Bay area, which is the part of the country that boasts some of the best architecture, restaurants, and shopping. While you’re here, make your way over to the famous Marina Bay Sands, where you will be able to browse and try out 24K gold-infused skin care at the OROGOLD boutique.

Singapore is known for being a highly populated city, and so many of the most popular attractions here are city-related, from chic bars and sleek restaurants to glitzy shopping malls. However, Singapore has another side too…this island used to be covered in lush rainforests, and while the majority of this may no longer be around, each of these outdoor activities gives you the chance to immerse yourself in the impressive natural beauty that Singapore has to offer.

Have You Considered a Workation Retreat?

Woman with laptop on balcony

Working from home was an exciting change for many to begin with, but the novelty can quickly wear off. Those same four walls staring back at you each day can really de-motivate, leaving so many remote workers desperate for a change of scene.

This is where the workation comes in…

The concept has been around for a while, but it really took off during the Covid-19 pandemic, when striking a good work/life balance became so much more challenging. Vacations quickly became a thing of the past, and home became a place of work rather than relaxation.

A workation gives you the opportunity to enjoy a stunning new destination, but with a strong focus still being placed on work. Whether you’d like to type away on a tropical beach or set up a temporary office in a luxury hotel suite, places all over the world are now catering to this popular trend by offering up special workation packages.

The Maldives

Maldives from above

The Maldives may be a popular honeymoon spot, but it’s also an exquisite location to spend a workation. Sandy white beaches, crystal clear blue waters, and peaceful seclusion – what more could you want?

The Maldives actually consists of 1192 islands that are sprinkled across the Indian Ocean. With each island having its own unique charm, many visitors spend their free time island hopping to truly immerse themselves in this tropical paradise.

Where to Stay

There are now quite a few hotels in the Maldives offering workation packages. However, one of the most popular is The Nautilus Maldives.

Why?

Well, for starters, they’re based in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, so you can only imagine how spectacular your surroundings will be. They offer week-long workation packages, but you can book for as many weeks as you want. Each package includes:

  • A personal assistant
  • A complimentary laundry service
  • Unlimited refreshments

If you would prefer to work outdoors, they’ll set up a special workstation just for you, complete with private WiFi, printers and scanners, and even a portable projector with its own screen.

The Soneva Fushi is another good option, with this resort offering a 50% discount when you book a stay for over 30 days. Their unique amenities are perfect for when you have some downtime, from speedboat trips to nearby islands to a night under the stars in a luxury Bedouin-style glamping tent.

Singapore

Singapore from above

Although Singapore is pretty built up, they have dealt with the Covid-19 crisis well, making it a great city in which to spend some time isolating away.

Just about every single one of the island nation’s attractions have adapted well to new restrictions, meaning that visitors are still able to enjoy the classics, all while staying safe. Plus, many of the country’s top attractions are outdoor-based anyway, such as:

  • The Singapore Zoo and Night Safari
  • Fort Canning Park
  • Sentosa
  • MacRitchie Reservoir
  • Singapore Botanic Gardens
  • Pulau Ubin
  • Jurong Bird Park

One of the highlights for many visitors to Singapore is the shopping, which many consider to be a national pastime. If your skin could do with a pick-me-up, drop in at one of the OROGOLD boutiques in Singapore, which are conveniently located around the island. You’ll be able to enjoy free product demonstrations, VIP facials, and so much more.

Where to Stay

Heard of the Singapore Sling cocktail?

It has made a name for itself around the world, and was invented at the Raffles Hotel, which also happens to be one of the best hotels in Singapore for a workation retreat.

Why?

Because they are offering “Work from Suite” packages, available on a daily rate. Each package includes access to the Raffles Butler Service, complete with secretarial support.

The InterContinental offers similar, but even has luxury pet amenities for those who want to workation with their pooch.

Florida

Florida from above

Famous for its amusement parks, beaches, and national parks, Florida offers workation visitors plenty of diversity. Covid-19 restrictions are starting to lift, meaning that its most popular attractions are once again open to the general public, although they will all still be following certain guidelines.

While the amusement parks may offer up a day of distractions, the relaxing beaches are usually the state’s biggest draw, with hundreds of miles of sandy stretches to choose from.

Some of the best beaches in the state to visit are:

  • Clearwater Beach – with shallow and clear waters, this one is perfect for families with young children
  • Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park – relatively undeveloped, making it great for getting away from the crowds
  • Caladesi Island State Park – another untouched stretch of white sand, which is also abundant in different bird species
  • Siesta Key – the sand here is made up of pure quartz, keeping it cool even in the hottest temperatures
  • Garden Key – one of the most remote and difficult to access beaches in the state, making it great for self-isolation

Where to Stay

Florida is large, and there are numerous hotels and resorts across the state offering up special workation packages. However, the Grande Lakes Orlando not only enjoys a prime location, but really does provide everything you could need for the ultimate workation.

In addition to being able to make the most of the hotel’s usual amenities, which include golf courses, several pools, and spas, the Work From Resort package comes with a Business Butler. Their job will be to help with admin tasks such as scanning and printing, while also helping you to find the best spots around the property with the strongest WiFi signal.

Parents with children can take a workation at this hotel too, thanks to the Grande Lakes Rangers. These can be hired by the hour or the day, and they will keep children occupied while their parents are busy working.

Barbados

Barbados from above

When the Covid-19 crisis hit, Barbados was quick to respond, not only in terms of taking care of its people, but also continuing to remain appealing to visitors.

How did they do this?

By coming up with the 12 Month Barbados Welcome Stamp. This initiative, which began in July 2020, is a new type of visa that allows people to spend up to a year in Barbados working remotely. You won’t need to pay income tax, and you can renew your visa after a year if you would like to stay longer.

Known for its sun, sand, and sea, along with its friendly and hospitable ambience, Barbados is an amazing destination for a workation. It’s home to colonial architecture, historic plantation houses, so much natural beauty, and some fascinating local traditions, giving you a truly incredible experience.

Where to Stay

The Courtyard by Marriott Bridgetown, Barbados is one of the best hotels to choose if you would like to go for pure luxury. The hotel recently completed a number of renovations to make themselves workation-friendly. Long-term workation stays come with:

  • Free WiFi throughout the hotel, meaning that you can work by the pool and on the beach
  • An ocean-view cabana room with a private balcony, a microwave, and a fridge
  • Discounts on food and beverage across all of the hotel’s restaurants and bars

Another option would be the Waves Hotel, where you will find the Working from Waves package. This is available on a monthly basis, meaning you get to enjoy a 35% discount on usual room rates, and includes:

  • An all-inclusive getaway
  • High-speed WiFi
  • Daily fitness classes
  • Complimentary spa treatments

New York

New York from above

New York may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of a workation, but for those living in or near the city, a local workation may be exactly what’s needed to give yourself a little break, without having to take any official time off.

Spend your days off exploring some of New York’s most popular outdoor attractions, such as:

  • Central Park
  • Gowanus Canal
  • East River State Park
  • The Bronx River
  • Hudson River Greenway
  • East River Waterfront Esplanade
  • Randalls Island
  • Madison Avenue (where you’ll also find an OROGOLD store)

Hiking, mountain biking, running, sailing, canoeing, river cruising, bird watching – there are so many outdoor activities that you can do in New York, offering up the perfect respite after a long day’s work.

Where to Stay

Manhattan can feel a little crowded at times, so make your way to Brooklyn. Nestled in Williamsburg is the Wythe Hotel, a former factory that dates back to 1901. Although industrial at heart, the hotel has been updated with so many modern luxurious, from heated floors to floor-to-ceiling windows, to custom-designed wallpaper.

Even better, this boutique hotel has repurposed some of its rooms to create private workspaces that include:

  • A private outdoor patio
  • Digital access to the New York Times
  • High-speed WiFi
  • Complimentary beverages
  • A smart TV

They offer special rates for extended stays, making this a popular choice.

If you would prefer to be further away from the city, the Hamptons is always a good option. The Roundtree, Amagansett has been trying to attract the WFH crowd by offering up luxurious workspaces, complete with desks, printers, and meeting rooms. Complimentary refreshments are included as well, along with a special wine and cheese happy hour each weekend.

Being located in the great outdoors means that the hotel can also offer their guests the opportunity to partake in a variety of outdoor activities, such as:

  • Fishing
  • Golfing
  • Tennis
  • Hiking

From sharks swimming below your glass-bottomed floor to city skylines laid out in front of you, here are seven hotels with some of the best views in the world.

The Ritz-Carlton, Millennia Singapore – Singapore

If you want to treat yourself to the life of luxury, you won’t ever go wrong with the Ritz-Carlton. This five star hotel is located in the buzzing Marina Bay district of Singapore, with rooms offering sweeping, panoramic views of this vibrant area.

Every guest room, along with their marble bathrooms, boast this incredible view, with the decadently inviting tubs encouraging guests to sit back, relax, and soak up their surroundings.

What Else Does the Hotel Offer?

In addition to the view, this hotel has so much more on offer, including:

  • A five star spa with special, signature treatments
  • A 4200-piece art collection, with many pieces from world-renowned artists, including Andy Warhol
  • A Michelin-starred restaurant
  • A large outdoor pool with sun loungers and private cabanas

What’s There to Do Nearby?

Singapore isn’t big, and the location of this hotel makes it the perfect base from where you can explore the entire island. However, if you don’t want to venture too far, there is also plenty to do in the Marina Bay area.

Gardens by the Bay is a must-see, cutting-edge botanical garden, while the Merlion is a national icon. The Singapore Flyer, along with the Marina Bay Sands Skypark, will reward you with even more aerial views of the city.

Of course, the luxury stores in this area can’t be ignored either. You will find some of the best brands in the world here, including an OROGOLD store in the Marina Bay Sands mall, where you can enjoy product demonstrations and VIP facials.

The Outpost, Kruger National Park – South Africa

View this post on Instagram

Wake up to this view.

A post shared by The Outpost Lodge (@theoutpostlodge) on Dec 15, 2019 at 11:27pm PST

Let’s face it – even on its own, the Kruger National Park is absolutely amazing. However, throw in a five star luxury lodge and you’ve got the recipe for a truly unforgettable vacation.

This hotel takes the open-plan concept to the next level – guest rooms don’t have any windows, giving you seamless views out over the wild African bush. With the hotel having just 12 suites, it never gets too busy, enabling you to enjoy the landscape uninterrupted.

What Else Does the Hotel Offer?

The international restaurant here serves up quality meals, but you can also request for a table to be set up for you somewhere else within the hotel’s grounds, meaning that you can enjoy personalized views with every meal.

The hotel also has a beautiful pool, and makes use of eco-friendly products.

Guests can go out on two game drives a day, giving them the chance to see the Big Five, along with Africa’s other legendary wildlife.

What’s There to Do Nearby?

The Outpost is in an area of total wilderness. In fact, this area used to be completely inaccessible to visitors, meaning that there isn’t too much else to do nearby. The nearest town, Louis Trichardt, is a three hour car journey away.

However, the lack of nearby activities is exactly what makes this hotel so appealing. For those who want to take some time out from their busy lives (and this is exactly what will happen, since WiFi here can be shaky), and simply make the most of what the natural world has to offer, this is the perfect spot to visit.

What Else Does the Hotel Offer?

New York is another city famous for its views, and the windows in the rooms of the Arlo NoMad frame these panoramas beautifully. This boutique hotel offers views of both downtown and uptown Manhattan, placing you in the heart of all of the hustle and bustle but in your own private bubble.

What Else Does the Hotel Offer?

The Arlo NoMad has two delicious restaurants; Missoni, which is an authentic Italian restaurant, and The Heights, which is a cafe that sits 31 floors above New York City. You will also find a cocktail bar/lounge here, as well as a 24 hour marketplace with a wide variety of snacks and drinks.

What’s There to Do Nearby?

Being located just north of Madison Square, the Arlo NoMad is just a four minute walk away from the famous Empire State Building, making this the first point of call for visitors.

Once you have fully explored this landmark, start making your way around the rest of New York. Some of the city’s most famous attractions include:

  • Central Park
  • The Statue of Liberty
  • Times Square
  • The Museum of Modern Art
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • Broadway
  • Ground Zero

If you are feeling overwhelmed with all of your many options, book yourself in for a city tour. The great thing about these is that you can choose a tour oriented towards your own personal interests. For example, if you love to eat, pick a food and culture tour. Alternatively, if you want to see as much of the city in as little time possible, pick a full or half day landmark tour.

While hotels around the world are now starting to open up again now that the worst of the Coronavirus pandemic seems to have passed, social distancing is still in place in most regions. So, while you may be ready to book your next vacation, it never hurts to choose a room with a view that makes you want to stay in.

6 Underrated Cities for a Romantic Valentine’s Getaway

Street in Bologna

Valentine’s Day isn’t too far away, but if you haven’t yet got anything planned, you still have some time.

Can’t think of a good gift?

How about booking a surprise getaway for two as a gift for your special someone?

However, rather than picking from the usual list of romantic destinations, whether this may be Paris, Rome or Venice, try choosing somewhere a little different. Here are six underrated cities around the world that will definitely not disappoint.

Aix en Provence, France

Aix on Provence cafe on street

The birthplace of legendary Post-Impressionist artist Paul Cezanne, Aix en Provence is a beautifully charming city nestled in the south of France. Having been founded way back in 123 BC, this is a richly historical city, with many of its attractions being related to its heritage.

The churches and cathedrals of Aix en Provence are always popular with tourists. The Eglise Saint-Jean-de-Malte was the region’s very first Gothic building, completed in 1277, while the Aix Cathedral is famous for its 15th century Burning Bush triptych.

However, in addition to learning about the history of this gorgeous little pocket of France, Aix en Provence boasts several other activities for you and your loved one to enjoy, such as:

  • Le Cours Mirabeau – a picturesque boulevard lined with trees, that give it a leafy, tunnel-like appearance. The street is home to numerous cafes, shops and restaurants, along with a weekly street market
  • Atelier Cezanne – Paul Cezanne’s original studio, which has pretty much been left untouched since the artist used to work there. If you want to learn even more about Cezanne, the Musee Granet is home to 12,000 works of art, including a room dedicated to the master artist, with nine of his original oil paintings on display
  • Le Terrain des Peintres – with an amazing view of Mt. Saint Victoire, this landscaped park is the perfect spot for a romantic picnic

  • Old Aix – the city’s old town, which will make you feel as though you have stepped back in time

If you and your loved one enjoy art, history and fine food, Aix en Provence is the perfect place for you.

Apostle Islands, Wisconsin, USA

Apostle Islands landscape

Let’s face it – Wisconsin probably isn’t the first state you would think of when it comes to choosing a romantic destination in the USA, but the Apostles, officially known as the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, will truly take your breath away. While not technically a city, this area still makes for a once-in-a-lifetime romantic vacation.

There are 22 islands in total, located in Lake Superior in the north of Wisconsin, with each island boasting such a diverse ecosystem. The islands are home to 800 different plant species, many of which are either threatened or endangered.

Wondering what there is to actually do here?

Well, the Apostle Islands are a destination best suited for couples who enjoy the outdoors. Popular activities here include:

  • Visiting the 8 historic lighthouse towers
  • Sailing to the other islands
  • Exploring, or kayaking through, the sea caves, which are filled with frozen waterfalls and icicles in the winter months
  • Hiking across the trail networks on each of the islands
  • Relaxing on some of the many sandy beaches

The Apostles offer up stunning scenery and the opportunity for outdoor adventure, making it the ideal place for some bonding time with that special someone.

Bologna, Italy

Aerial view of Bologna

The bustling historic capital of the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, Bologna is an extremely underrated city, with many overlooking it for the tourist hotspots of Rome, Venice and Milan.

Now, if you consider yourself to be a foodie, you will absolutely love Bologna. The city is famed for being a foodie hub, and not only because this is where bolognese was invented. While the classic sauce definitely deserves a taste in its hometown, make room for the city’s delicate, handmade tortellini, their fresh mortadella, and the most authentic Parmigiano Reggiano.

In addition to eating your way around the city, here are a few of the other things that you shouldn’t miss out on when in Bologna:

  • Walking through the porticoes, which are traditional arches that line the streets of the city
  • Visiting the city’s historic churches. The San Domenico Basilica in particular is especially fascinating, since this is where you will find the piano that Mozart used when he was studying in the city
  • Touring the city’s many art museums
  • Signing up for a course at the Carpigiani Gelato University, or simply taking a tour of the attached Gelato Museum
  • Exploring Piazza Maggiore, the city’s main square, which is always full of life and energy
  • Indulging in some retail therapy, with the city being home to some exquisite boutique stores. The stores around Piazza Galvani are especially worth browsing, and be sure to stop off at the OROGOLD store in this beautiful square as well to treat your skin to a VIP facial

If you’re into good food, art, culture and history, Bologna makes for the perfect romantic getaway.

Kyoto, Japan

Steps in Kyoto with traditional houses and cherry blossoms

Famous for its culture and heritage, Kyoto, which lies on the Japanese island of Honshu, used to be the capital of Japan. While it no longer holds that title, the city is still a bustling hub full of Buddhist temples, shrines, traditional architecture and more.

Japanese culture is intriguing to so many, and Kyoto really is one of the best destinations to truly immerse yourself in the authentic Japanese way of life. From sleeping on a futon to experiencing a traditional matcha tea ceremony, Kyoto is a place that will make you and your loved one feel as though you are in a completely different world together.

Being one of the largest cities in Japan, there really is so much to do in Kyoto, with these activities being among the most popular:

  • Viewing the cherry blossoms, a “sport” known as hanami. This can only be done in the spring
  • Visiting some of the city’s 2000 temples and shrines, some of which have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites
  • Exploring Gion, which is known for being the city’s entertainment district, and is where you will be able to watch Geisha and Maiko dancers
  • Taking a romantic stroll along Bamboo Grove – one of the most photographed spots in the city
  • Visiting the Wazuka tea plantation, which produces almost half of the city’s green tea
  • Sampling the many different traditional foods of the city. From Michelin-starred fine dining restaurants to street-side sushi joints, Kyoto is full of incredible food

The culture of Kyoto tends to be its biggest draw, making this the perfect destination for those who are curious about the traditional Japanese way of life.

Arusha, Tanzania

Zebras running in Arusha

Tanzania is famous for being one of the best countries in Africa for an authentic safari experience, and Arusha has earned itself the reputation of being the safari capital of the country. This vibrant city, which can be found in Tanzania’s northern highlands, just between the peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, is conveniently located nearby to several major national parks and conservation areas, making this a popular hub for those who want to venture out into the African bush.

Although Arusha as a city may not be the most picturesque, its surrounding opportunities are its biggest draw. There are plenty of walking tours to choose from to help you better acquaint yourself with the city, and the two twin peaks that sit on either side of Arusha also attract hikers and mountain climbers from all around the world. The markets that are hosted daily at the center of the city are also plenty of fun, with pretty much everything you could imagine being available here.

However, if a safari is your priority, here are some of the best nearby parks to visit:

  • Serengeti National Park – famous for its annual migrations, with more than 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra crossing the park each year. You also have a good chance of spotting the Big Five here (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros and buffalo). Thanks to the abundance of prey animals here, these larger predators are easy to see
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area – while primarily revered for its volcanic complex, including the largest inactive and unfilled caldera in the world, this park is also home to around 25,000 large animals, including buffalo rhinoceros, zebra and hippopotamus
  • Lake Manyara National Park – this park is famous for its bird inhabitants, with hundreds of thousands of flamingos flocking to the lake during the wet season. Pelicans, storks, herons and more can also be seen here, while some larger mammals do also move through the park, especially during the dry season
  • Arusha National Park – located on Mount Meru, a distinct volcano, this park is smaller than some of the others nearby, but is still home to everything from giraffes and Cape buffalo to monkeys, elephants and zebra. Leopards do also live in the area, but are not often seen by the public

If your idea of a romantic getaway is you and your loved one exploring the rugged wilderness of the African bush, and seeing some incredible animals along the way, Arusha is the place for you.

Singapore

Boat on river in Singapore

The island nation of Singapore has rapidly developed over the years, transforming itself from a British Empire trading post to one of the most advanced cities in the world. Although Singapore may be one of the smallest countries in the world, it is jam-packed with so many different things to do.

For many, one of Singapore’s biggest attractions is its shopping. Many locals joke about shopping being the national sport of Singapore, with the island being home to more shopping malls per square mile than any other country in the world. Orchard Road tends to be the best place to go, with everything from tiny markets to sprawling designer stores being found here. While browsing the malls along Orchard Road, be sure to stop off at the sleek and stylish Wisma Atria, where you will find one of our OROGOLD stores.

Of course, shopping isn’t the most romantic of activities, so when you and your loved one are looking for some quality time together, here are just a few of the things that you could do:

  • Take a stroll around the beautiful Marina Bay, finishing off with a visit to Marina Bay Sands and its iconic rooftop infinity pool
  • Stop off for a Singapore Sling at the Raffles Hotel, where this classic cocktail was first invented
  • Visit some of the temples, markets and museums in Chinatown
  • Enjoy a meal and a few drinks at Clarke Quay, a bustling riverside district
  • Spend some time in nature at the MacRitchie Reservoir. Give its treetop walk a try – a wooden walkway that stands 25 meters high, giving you a literal birds-eye view of your surroundings
  • Explore Gardens by the Bay – a futuristic botanical garden that has received numerous awards over the years
  • Lounge on the beaches of Sentosa, while also indulging in the many other activities that this small, purpose-built island offers

If you and your special someone would enjoy an action-packed city break together, Singapore is the destination to choose.

Booking a vacation as a Valentine’s Day present always makes for such a good gift, as long as you are sure that the location you have picked is one that your loved one would like. Fortunately, if you go for one of these six destinations, chances are that your choice will be very well-received, and you and your special someone will enjoy the ultimate romantic getaway.

The 9 Most Photogenic Spots in Singapore

Aerial view of Singapore

Chatchawat Prasertsom / Shutterstock.com

Love taking photos when you travel?

Whether it’s just a hobby or you’re a full-blown professional, Singapore is a destination that just about every photographer loves. From lush pockets of greenery hidden around the city, to towering skyscrapers, glittering lights and a colorful culture, here are the nine most photogenic spots in Singapore.

Emerald Hill

Shophouses at Emerald Hill

LEE SNIDER PHOTO IMAGES / Shutterstock.com

Let’s begin with a location that many would say is quite the hidden gem…

Located just off the city’s most famous shopping street, Orchard Road, this small community is packed with exquisite Chinese Baroque architecture. Many of the traditional shop-houses here, which date back to the early 1900’s, have been restored to their former glory, giving you a gorgeous glimpse into Singapore’s Peranakan past.

To get the perfect shot:
  • Visit early in the morning, as Emerald Hill can become pretty crowded as the day goes on
  • The most colorful shop-houses can be found at the area’s entrance, where Emerald Hill meets Orchard Road
  • Explore different angles when taking pictures of shop-houses, as they can look completely different from each side
While you’re there…

The restaurants and bars at Emerald Hill are always popular. They serve up some fantastic food and drink, while also providing such a unique ambience. Try Black Nut for some Asian fusion or No. 5 Emerald Hill for well-priced cocktails.

Marina Bay Sands SkyPark

Woman in infinity pool at Marina Bay Sands

Although Marina Bay Sands only opened its doors in 2010, it has quickly become an iconic part of Singapore’s skyline. This hotel, which is also a shopping mall, a museum, the world’s most expensive standalone casino property, a theatre and so much more, is famous for its SkyPark – a 340 meter long platform that hangs over the building’s north tower.

As you probably already know from the countless photos out there, an infinity swimming pool can be found on this platform, along with restaurants and bars. While many would say that the infinity pool is the best spot for a stunning photograph, this backdrop has already been done so many times now, so take a look at what else the SkyPark has to offer…

To get the perfect shot:
  • Keep in mind that tripods are prohibited, but you can still bring along a portable pod that you can attach to the SkyPark’s railings
  • Plan your visit for a day that isn’t hazy, otherwise your view will be severely obstructed
  • If you are visiting at night, experiment with different shutter speeds to capture the many lights in different ways
While you’re there…

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands is a shopping mall well worth visiting. The mall is large, and there is even an indoor canal, complete with gondolas, running through the mall, giving a completely new meaning to the term “window shopping”.

This is where you will find the largest selection of luxury brands in Southeast Asia, including two OROGOLD stores. This is the perfect place to treat your skin to some luxury, with product samples, demonstrations and expert skincare advice.

Punggol Waterway Park

Punggol Water Walk

Want some time away from the hustle and bustle of the big city?

The Punggol Waterway Park, which can be found in the suburb of Punggol, is home to the largest man-made waterway in the country. There are different themed areas to visit here, each one offering up its own array of stunning photography backdrops.

To get the perfect shot:
  • Visit early in the morning or late in the evening, as this park can get busy with recreational users
  • The Nature Cove is ideal for tranquil, scenic shots
  • The Heritage Zone and the Green Gallery is where to go if you are looking for mature trees and vegetation
While you’re there…

Punggol is quite an up-and-coming neighborhood, so there are several different things that you can do here. From a session at an outdoor gym to horseriding at the Gallop Stables to sampling the freshest seafood, or even trying your own hand at some fishing, Punggol is guaranteed to entertain.

Haji Lane

Haji Lane street

If you have already spent some time looking at photography of Singapore, then Haji Lane is an area that you have likely stumbled upon a few times.

This is quite a bohemian part of Singapore, meaning that the vibe here is so different from anywhere else in the city. From hip bars to striking street art to independent fashion boutiques, it is easy to see why so many tourists are determined to check out Haji Lane during their visit.

To get the perfect shot:
  • The street art and colonial architecture are the stars of Haji Lane, so choose a wall that you genuinely like and then strike a pose
  • Try to shoot front on, so that the artwork in your shot doesn’t end up distorted
  • Head to the corner of the block just at the start of Haji Lane for some beautiful art that is juxtaposed with lush green trees
While you’re there…

You won’t be able to resist browsing through the charming stores here. If you plan your visit around a mealtime, the many restaurants here will delight you. Evenings are also great, with many of the Haji Lane bars offering up happy hour deals.

It is also worth exploring a little further afield, checking out the kampong heritage of Arab Street. The Masjid Sultan Mosque is also located here, promising some magnificent photo ops.

The Cloud Forest

Cloud forest at Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay is one of Singapore’s most popular tourist attractions. Just last year alone, more than 50 million visitors spent some time at this landmark, with these numbers growing steadily each year. In addition to being home to expansive outdoor gardens, along with the Supertree Grove (massive tree-like structures that collect rainwater, solar energy, and more), Gardens by the Bay is also where you will find the Cloud Forest.

Wondering what the Cloud Forest is?

It is an environment designed to replicate a tropical mountain region. Visitors can climb (or take the elevator) to the top of the Cloud Mountain, and then work their way down a circular path until they reach the bottom, with a 35 meter waterfall cascading down along the way.

To get the perfect shot:
  • Make sure you bring along a small cloth – all of that condensation and mist will quickly build up on your camera lens
  • If you are using automatic settings, click over to “cloudy”, as this will bring out the rich colors of the greenery around you
  • The Cloud Forest is misted every two hours – if you can time your snaps for one of these sessions, your photos will have a beautiful ethereal quality to them
While you’re there…

It goes without saying that the rest of the Gardens by the Bay should definitely be explored. You may as well set aside an entire day for this visit, as there really is so much here to see and do.

Little India

Shophouse at Little India

If you love color, culture and heritage, then Little India is the place for you. The area gets its name from Singapore’s colonial past, since this is where Indian immigrants would settle. Although the Indians of Singapore now live all over the island, Little India is still home to many Indian-based businesses and restaurants, keeping the culture of the area thriving.

Serangoon Road is the main road that runs through Little India, and while there are plenty of sights, sounds, smells and more to experience here, the smaller side streets that split off from the main road are worth exploring too.

To get the perfect shot:
  • There are many colorful shops and houses here, but try seeking out the famous former house of Tan Teng Niah. Painted in all of the colors of the rainbow, this is the only original Chinese villa that still survives in the area, giving you a photo that is both vibrant and historic at the same time
  • The intricacy of the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple reflects well in photos, with this temple known for being one of the oldest in the country
  • For an authentic snapshot of a busy local market, head over to the multicultural Tekka Market
While you’re there…

You can’t visit Little India without stopping off to sample some authentic Indian cuisine. Many of the restaurants here are South Indian, meaning that they are vegetarian, but you definitely won’t miss your meat when you try some of their specialties.

Head to the Kamala Restaurant for a classic thosai, or to the Banana Leaf Apolo for their legendary fish head curry. If you’re feeling extra hungry, the buffet at the Madras New Woodlands will have you feeling satisfied in no time.

The TreeTop Walk

TreeTop Walk

The first of its kind in Southeast Asia, the TreeTop Walk sits high above a mature secondary forest, giving you a literal birds-eye view of the forest’s canopy layer. This unique walkway stretches out for about 250 meters. Its highest point is 25 meters, and this varies depending on the height of the forest floor itself.

To get the perfect shot:
  • Don’t visit during peak hours, unless you want other people in your shot
  • Keep turning back to photograph the views behind you, as you can only walk this walkway in one direction
  • When you reach the split in the path at Sime Track, take the path that leads to the Jelutong Tower, which is a great place for photographing some of the rare birds that live in this area
While you’re there…

If you love outdoor adventure, then the TreeTop Walk joins on to several other hiking trails in this area. The Southern Ridges is one that you will particularly enjoy, with this 10 kilometer trail network offering up views of both the city skyline as well as the island’s green pockets.

The Helix Bridge

The Helix Bridge

Want to photograph some cutting-edge architecture?

The Helix Bridge, which can be found in the Marina Bay area of Singapore (mentioned earlier), is spiralled like a double helix, with DNA playing a huge role in the inspiration behind this design. In fact, this was the first double helix structure in the world. The bridge has won numerous awards, and, even if you don’t have time to walk it, it is still worth checking out from a distance.

To get the perfect shot:
  • The Helix Bridge is lit up in an array of colors at night, making this a great spot for some night photography
  • The bridge offers some great views of the skyline, and there are four viewing platforms to ensure that you get the perfect shot, even if it is raining
  • Head on over to other parts of Marina Bay to capture the bridge from a distance
While you’re there…

Check out the rest of Marina Bay Sands. There are several public walkways taking you around the water, with each bend offering skyline photos that are a little different from the last.

Sentosa

Beach on Sentosa Island

Many people don’t realize that Singapore consists of more than one island. The country boasts several smaller islands too, one of which is the attraction-packed Sentosa. With everything from theme parks and waterparks to beaches, casinos and fine dining, Sentosa is a lot like the main island, except condensed into a much smaller area.

To get the perfect shot:
  • To be photographed next to a sign that states that you are at the southernmost point of continental Asia, head to sandy Palawan Beach
  • For a backdrop of luxury super-yachts and upscale eateries, check out Quayside Isle
  • The acrylic walkway at Underwater World will see you surrounded by sharks, jellyfish and many other species of marine life
While you’re there…

As you can tell, there is so much to do on Sentosa. There are several hotels here too, making it easy to spend a few nights and really explore all that the island has to offer. Whether you want a relaxing, tropical poolside vacay or a stay filled adrenaline-pumping adventure, Sentosa really does have it all.

Singapore as a whole is so photogenic. Just about everywhere you go, you will find special nooks and crannies that will have you whipping out your camera and framing up the perfect shot. However, for photos that are truly memorable, these nine spots will not do you wrong.

Say Hello to These Animals in Singapore

While Singapore may have a land mass of just 707 square kilometres, the island is home to an incredibly diverse range of animals. From free-ranging orang utans to giant pandas, here are just a few of the animals that you can say hello to in Singapore.

Orang utans

Orang Utans
The Singapore Zoo is home to two species of orang utan, both of which live together in the free-ranging orang utan exhibit. This zoo was the first in the world to put together a concept such as this for orang utans, and it has worked extremely well. With two free-ranging areas, a boardwalk, an island and thick vegetation, there is plenty of space for the animals to play and frolic, as well as viewing stations for visitors to get up close to these magnificent creatures. You will also see a number of behaviour enrichment devices scattered throughout the area, and these are there to ensure that the orang utans are able to be both physically and mentally stimulated each and every day.

Leopards
Leopards are no doubt majestic creatures, and these can be viewed at Singapore’s Night Safari, by taking a walk along the Leopard Trail. In addition to a pair of Sri Lankan leopards, this habitat is also home to clouded leopards, all of which are at their most active at nights, which is why the Night Safari is the best place to view them. In addition to seeing leopards along the Leopard Trail, you will also be able to view everything from the Malayan civet to the zebra and giraffe.

Giant Pandas

Giant Pandas
Singapore’s River Safari is a relatively new river-themed wildlife park with eight different river habitats. One of these is the Yangtze River, inspired by said river in China, which is home to the elusive giant panda, and these incredible creatures are an amazing sight to see. This is the largest panda exhibit in Southeast Asia, making it well worth visiting if you have never seen pandas before

Birds of Prey
Otherwise known as the kings of the skies, birds of prey can be viewed at the Jurong Bird Park, where you will find hawks, vultures and eagles living side by side. From hooked beaks to sharp talons, you will no doubt marvel at these creatures, while learning so much more about each of them.

Sun parakeets

Attila JANDI / Shutterstock.com

Parrots
Also at the Jurong Bird Park is the largest collection of parrots in all of Asia. There are 32 aviaries here dedicated to these birds, which are known for being quite sociable, with some of the aviaries containing truly rare species of parrots. From the Blue-eyed Cockatoo to the Blue and Gold Macaw to the Yellow-Naped Amazon, this is a park that all bird lovers should definitely visit.

Singapore is most known for its man-made attractions, but this does not mean that the country has not made any space for nature either. With everything from majestic leopards to soaring eagles calling this island their home, be sure to make some time to say hello to some of Singapore’s animals.

Architectural Wonders of Singapore

The architecture in Singapore consists of a charming mix of both old and new. When it comes to the new, there are certain designs that really embody innovation, as well as the future of the industry, are considered to be the architectural wonders of Singapore.

Helix Bridge in Singapore

Lena Serditova / Shutterstock.com

The Helix Bridge
The Helix Bridge is famous for being the first double helix structure in the world, with this spiral making its way around the entire length of the walkway, and covered with a glass and steel canopy to protect those within from the harsh Singapore sun. This bridge has a distinct arc shape, meaning that it is able to connect Marina Centre with Marina South while keeping pedestrians away from the traffic.

Marina Bay Sands in Singapore

Marina Bay Sands
Marina Bay Sands quickly became an iconic part of Singapore’s skyline, and it is easy to see why. The structure features three 55-storey hotel towers that are connected at the top by the SkyPark. While the interior of the hotels is wonderfully extravagant, it is the SkyPark that really stands out, as this is where you will find the longest infinity pool in the world, as well as an observation platform that is set 67 metres hanging over the edge of the north tower.

Esplanade in Singapore

Sam’s Studio / Shutterstock.com

Esplanade
The Esplanade is where you will find theatres, outdoor performing spaces, concert halls, a shopping mall and more, and its design was first unveiled to the public in 1994. However, its two glass domes caused a huge stir, as many feared that these would act like a giant greenhouse, and end up amplifying the already-hot and humid heat of the city. In order to rectify this, aluminium sunshades were added in a scale-like pattern to the exterior of the building, making the Esplanade resemble the durian fruit.

Raffles Hotel in Singapore

Luriya Chinwan / Shutterstock.com

Raffles Hotel
While the other structures mentioned may be modern and innovative, the Raffles Hotel is one of the most distinctive colonial buildings in Singapore, and has become legendary to the country, and the world. This building was originally completed in 1899, and, after surviving the war, was declared a national monument in 1987. For those taking a look at the exterior of the Raffles Hotel, do stop by at the Long Bar, which is believed to be the birthplace of the famous Singapore Sling cocktail.

Thian Hock Keng Temple in Singapore

AsiaTravel / Shutterstock.com

Thian Hock Keng Temple
The Thian Hock Keng Temple was constructed in 1839 by Chinese immigrants and features a traditionally Chinese architectural style. The reason why this structure would be considered to be an architectural wonder is because of the way it has been constructed without the use of any nails, while the majority of the timber used came from Chinese junk boats. The mosaics that you will see here are also eye-catching, and these have been created from broken pieces of pottery.

Singapore is filled with architectural wonders, both modern as well as historic. From the exquisite colonial details of the Raffles Hotel to the record-breaking Helix Bridge, make sure that you have your camera with you when visiting each of these sites.

The Beaches
Although Sentosa’s beaches are man-made, with the soft white sand being imported in from Malaysia, there is 3.2 kilometres of beautiful beach to be enjoyed here, an experience that cannot be had anywhere else in Singapore. Palawan Beach is one of the most popular, and is known for its suspension bridge that connects Sentosa to another tiny island. Tanjong Beach is also great, especially during the daytime, as it enjoys a more secluded location. Finally, there is Siloso Beach, which is on the south-western tip of Sentosa, and is where you will find the highest concentration of bars, hotels, restaurants and shops on the island, although the other two beaches do have plenty of facilities nearby too.

Fort Siloso
For those who want to learn more about Singapore’s history, a visit to Fort Siloso, a preserved fort, is a must. This fort has now been turned into a military-themed attraction, but still features its tunnels, barracks, ammunition bunkers and gun emplacements, as well as a collection of guns, photographs and other memorabilia that date from the 17th century to WWII.

Sentosa is home to so many different attractions that you will likely want to spend as much time here as possible. From the views from the top of the Tiger Sky Tower to the adrenaline-fuelling rides at the Universal Studios Singapore, these are just a few of the things available to do on Sentosa Island.

Singapore Food Festival

Chinatown. Singapore

GTS Productions / Shutterstock.com

An annual event that is being held this year from the 15th to the 31st of July, the Singapore Food Festival is celebrated throughout the island of Singapore, consisting of food-related events, culinary workshops and demonstrations, themed celebrations and competitions. The main theme for the festival this year is “Savour the Past, Taste the Future”, highlighting Singapore’s local flavors while showcasing the innovative spirit of Singapore’s food scene.

STREAT
The signature event of the Singapore Food Festival each year, STREAT will be returning again in 2016, featuring award-winning local chefs. The event will feature a pop-up restaurant that will be serving up a specially curated five-course dinner that promises to elevate iconic street food dishes, and there will also be 10 popular hawker chefs present, cooking up a range of local and progressive dishes.

50 Cent Fest!
From the 30th to the 31st of July, Singapore’s Chinatown Food Street will be transformed into a foodie wonderland, lined with several delicious street stalls, as well as buskers and street entertainers. The local dishes on sale here will all be sold in small 50 cent portions, enabling visitors to really sample a different taste from each stall.

Open Stoves
Open Stoves is a special event that will be held from the 23rd to the 24th of July, and features a BBQ outdoor kitchen, live cooking demonstrations, live music from local bands, and even neon beer pong. This is a great event for those who want a behind-the-scenes peek into the kitchen, where resident and guest chefs will be creating new and innovative dishes in full view of their audience.

Recreating History
As Singapore has developed over the years, certain areas of the country, which were once go-to places for local dishes, lost their foodie charm. This year’s Singapore Food Festival aims to recreate that in certain areas of the country, bringing back the food stalls that once lined the Farrer Park district, as well as highlighting the heritage of certain eateries, such as the landmark hawker center, East Coast Lagoon Food Village.

Singapore Restaurant Month 2016
Singapore Restaurant Month runs in conjunction with the Singapore Food Festival and is part of the Health Promotion Board’s quest to encourage the public to eat healthier foods. There are 46 restaurants taking part in Singapore Restaurant Month, 10 of which are heritage establishments, and they have come up with 95 exclusive and wholesome dishes, which have been inspired by traditional local dishes. Each dish is under 500 calories, showing that it is most definitely possible for authentic local dishes to still be just as delicious, but much healthier. Some of the dishes that you can expect to sample are the Steamed Sea Bass with Spicy Chilli and Lime Sauce from Nara Thai, and the Eight Treasures Box filled with delicate steamed dumplings from Shin Yeh.

The Singapore Food Festival is always a highly anticipated event, with Singaporeans in general quite passionate about their food. Each of the special events that will be held in honor of the festival promise to not only showcase the way in which local food has held onto its heritage over the years, but also bring to light the innovative new dishes that have been putting Singapore at the forefront of the culinary world in recent years.
