The Top 6 Destinations for Bleisure Travel in 2020

Scenic view of Amsterdam canal with parked bicycles

The bleisure travel trend is growing at an astronomical rate, and shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, with research showing that bleisure travel helps to reduce stress, increase productivity at work, and improve mental health, this is a trend that may end up becoming the new normal.

Not familiar with the term ‘bleisure travel’?

It refers to combining leisure activities with a business trip, meaning really making the most of your business trip destination, rather than visiting it solely for work.

If you know that you need to plan a few business trips in the near future, here are 2020’s top six bleisure travel destinations.

Tokyo, Japan

Busy Tokyo crossing from above

With Tokyo recently being rated as the best bleisure destination in Asia, it seemed only fitting that the Japanese capital made first place on this list.

So, what exactly makes Tokyo so suitable for bleisure?

Well, when the bleisure study mentioned above was carried out, Tokyo came out top in a number of areas, including:

  • Quality of international links
  • Opportunity for cultural experiences
  • Availability of consumer goods and services
  • Culinary reputation

Bleisure travelers appreciate being able to immerse themselves in a new culture, and Tokyo really does provide this. The streets of Tokyo are sprinkled with multiple shrines and temples, and traditional art forms are abundant wherever you go, from origami to flower arranging to tea ceremonies, all of which bleisure travelers can easily take part in.

When it comes to food, Tokyo boasts around 226 restaurants with Michelin stars, which is more than any other city in the world. Whether you’re into fine dining or street food stalls, Tokyo has it all. Yes, you may have tasted everything from sushi to ramen to yakitori in your own country, but nothing quite compares to the authentic flavors you will experience when eating these iconic dishes in their homeland.

With more and more bleisure travelers now choosing to extend their business trips to spend more time in Tokyo, there are now hotels popping up that cater to this. Now, many travelers carry out the business portion of their trip at a more business-oriented hotel, before booking themselves in to somewhere more authentic and traditional for an extra couple of days.

Dubai, UAE

Dubai skyline

Being the main business hub of the Middle East, Dubai receives millions of business travelers each year. Thanks to the city’s incredible selection of hotels, restaurants, attractions and sights, this is a fantastic destination for a bleisure adventure.

Chances are, the business portion of your trip is taking place in the city center, meaning that you can spend your evenings exploring some of Dubai’s most legendary landmarks, including:

  • The Burj Khalifa – the tallest building in the world, with the world’s highest observation deck, giving you an amazing view of your surroundings
  • The Dubai Fountains – the world’s largest choreographed fountain system that sits on a 30-acre man-made lake
  • The Dubai Mall – the second-largest mall in the world, with more than 1200 stores, including several high end boutiques
  • Kite Beach – one of the most popular beaches in the city, with large stretches of white sand and waters that reach 32 degrees Celsius

As you can see, many of Dubai’s attractions are worldwide record breakers, and there really is no denying that the city is full of glitz, glamor and bling.

However, what many business travelers don’t usually experience is the seclusion and isolation of the deserts that surround the city, along with the unique culture and heritage of the Bedouin people. This is something that greatly appeals to bleisure travelers, because it provides such a contrast to city life.

Desert safaris are always popular, especially with adrenaline-seekers who want to try their hand behind the wheel, navigating those precarious sand dunes. You could then spend the night at a Bedouin camp, enjoying a traditional meal.

The dunes are also ideal for quad biking and sand boarding, both being experiences that you will never forget.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Canal with boat and buildings in Amsterdam

The capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is nicknamed the “Venice of the North”, due to its ultra-elaborate canal system. The waterways definitely play a large role in adding to the city’s unique appeal, although its narrow gabled houses, artistic heritage, and complex history help with this too.

Amsterdam tends to be quite a popular destination for business travelers, and this is a city where you can really embrace the bleisure trend.

The best way to get around in Amsterdam?

Cycling. The city is home to more than 800,000 bicycles, meaning more bicycles than people! Cycling in Amsterdam is a way of life, thanks to the city’s naturally flat landscape and convenient network of cycle routes. Visitors can easily rent a bicycle for the day and then use this to explore every corner of the city. Since Amsterdam is a relatively compact city, you will still be able to see quite a bit, even if you only have a couple of days to spare.

Of course, a visit to Museumplein is a must. This is the cultural heart of the city, filled with impressive 19th century architecture, along with some of the finest museums in the world. A few must-sees include:

  • The Van Gogh Museum
  • Rijksmuseum
  • The Stedelijk Museum

The summer months see Museumplein packed with open-air markets and exhibitions, along with a paddling pool for both children and adults. In the winter, the space turns into a large outdoor ice rink, making Museumplein perfect for a visit no matter the time of year.

If you enjoy shopping, then you will love the vast range of retail therapy that Amsterdam offers. You will find everything from high end luxury designer stores to vintage boutiques here. If you don’t have much time to spare, concentrate your shopping efforts around Hobbemastraat, which is home to some of the finest luxury brands in the city, including an OROGOLD store. Stop by for your skincare fix, whether you have been looking for some new products, need some advice, or want to enjoy a complimentary VIP treatment.

Sydney, Australia

View of Sydney harbor

When it comes to business travel destinations in Australia, Sydney comes out on top, meaning that it only makes sense for some of those travelers to combine their business trips with a few leisure activities.

So, how exactly do you do this in Sydney?

Well, a visit to the beach is a must, since beaches are a firm part of the culture in Sydney. The beach you choose will likely depend on your exact location, with the area of Bondi and Manly being the most popular.

Bondi is home to the famous Bondi Beach – head further north to get away from the tourists. A short walk away is Gordon’s Bay, one of the best diving spots in the area, with its own underwater nature trail. However, Manly has plenty to offer too, with numerous beach and water sports, weekend markets, and beautiful views.

Of course, there is so much more to Sydney than just its beaches…

Everything from Sydney Tower to the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens are worthy of your time and attention, but make sure you also save time for a visit to the Blue Mountains. Whether you spend the day hiking, or simply taking in the natural beauty and diverse wildlife, the beauty of the Blue Mountains is something that definitely needs to be experienced.

San Diego, California

Aerial view of San Diego

Home to several major attractions, miles of beautiful beaches and incredible weather, it should come as no surprise that San Diego is one of the most-loved bleisure destinations in the USA.

When it comes to city-based attractions, you’ve got plenty to choose from, including:

  • The San Diego Harbor – where you will find public art, street performers, the oldest active sailing ship in the world, and Seaport Village
  • La Jolla Cove – perfect for some water sports and bird watching
  • Belmont Park – an amusement park with stunning views of the Pacific
  • Balboa Park – in addition to housing the San Diego Zoo, this sprawling urban park also boasts 15 museums, landscaped gardens and so much more
  • Old Town San Diego – the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is believed to be the “birthplace of California”. With the very first European settlements in the state, this is the place to go to learn more about California’s fascinating history

Were you hoping to get away from the city for a bit?

A couple of hours drive north of San Diego will take you to the small mountain town of Julian. The town itself is an official California Historic Landmark, thanks to its gold-mining history. With guided tours of the old mines, pioneer store fronts and several historic sites, this is such a fascinating destination. Julian is also famous for its apple pies, due to its cold climate that makes it perfect for growing the most delicious varieties of the fruit. If you’re visiting in October, then you’ll be lucky enough to take part in the town’s Apple Festival.

London, UK

Aerial view of London and River Thames

The capital of the UK, as well as one of Europe’s major financial hubs, London has plenty to offer to the bleisure traveler. This is such a multicultural city with so much to see and do.

If your meetings are taking place in the heart of the city, then this means that you will have easy access to the River Thames. If a river cruise feels too touristy for you, simply take a stroll along the banks instead. From Big Ben to the Tower of London to Tower Bridge, some of London’s most iconic landmarks are situated along the river.

For many bleisure travelers, the idea of exploring a little further afield is extremely appealing. After all, if you’ve already spent several days in the city, then it only makes sense to spend those precious extra couple of days seeing what else the country has to offer. Fortunately, there are many destinations just a short distance from London that are perfect for a one or two night getaway:

  • Stonehenge – this famous UNESCO World Heritage Site is believed to have once been a place of pagan worship. Stonehenge is located in Salisbury, which is also home to the Magna Carta and a cathedral with the tallest spire in the country
  • Oxford – just about everybody has heard of Oxford, with this city boasting some world-class museums and truly incredible architecture
  • Windsor – for those interested in British royalty, a visit to Windsor is a must. This is where you will find Windsor Castle, the weekend getaway for the Royal Family, complete with a special route through a few rooms that visitors are able to tour
  • Bath – this Georgian city is famous for its Roman baths, which have been perfectly preserved. You will also find UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ancient Roman architecture and some of the best ale in the country here
  • The New Forest – if you would prefer to experience some of England’s countryside, the New Forest is the place to go. With ancient woodlands, open moors, cliff top walks and herds of wild horses roaming the streets, this magical area will quickly steal your heart

Just about any business trip can be turned into bleisure experience, so long as you are willing to set aside the extra time needed to pursue a few leisure activities. Whether this means spending the early mornings and evenings exploring your surroundings, or extending your trip by a couple of days so that you can really check out everything on offer, bleisure really is the way forward when it comes to business travel in the future. After all, all work and no play is never fun!

5 Micronations You’ve Never Heard Of

The fortress island of Sealand in the North Sea

Do you know how many countries there are in the world?

There isn’t actually a set number for this…

It all depends on who you ask, as well as what you consider to be a country. For example, in the eyes of the USA, there are less than 200 countries in the world, whereas the United Nations would put this number closer to 241.

One of the reasons why this figure is so ambiguous is due to the micronations that spring up every once in a while. A micronation is a self-proclaimed independent state – basically, a new country in the making. These micronations are created for a variety of different reasons, with everything from the need to increase tourism to political reasons being behind some of the most successful micronations out there.

Want to add a truly unique destination to your travel list?

Here are five micronations you’ve never heard of, but will probably want to visit very soon!

1) Ladonia, Sweden

View this post on Instagram

Ladonia — the little micronation made from driftwood in the south of Sweden.

A post shared by @ elldugger on Jul 6, 2019 at 2:49am PDT

Back in the 1990’s, Swedish artist Lars Vilks was going through a court battle with local authorities.

Why?

Because Vilks created two 75-tonne sculptures from driftwood in a secluded nature reserve. It was two years before these sculptures were discovered, with authorities then demanding that the sculptures be removed. After multiple court hearings, all of which Vilks lost, he eventually managed to declare the area surrounding his sculptures as an independent, sovereign country, which he named Ladonia.

Ladonia is currently ruled by its own government, headed up by its Queen and an elected president. While the micronation doesn’t actually have any permanent residents, there are currently over 22,000 Ladonian citizens located in over 50 countries around the world, each one standing behind the ideals that Ladonia represents.

Wondering what these ideals exactly are?

Here are just a few of these things that Ladonia stands for:

  • Tax-free living
  • Freedom from the government
  • A government that everybody can participate in
  • Freedom of expression

Although Ladonia may only consist of one square kilometer of land, the micronation welcomes around 40,000 visitors each year.

What is there to do in Ladonia?

Visit the sculptures, of course!

This remote spot can usually only be accessed by foot, but the well-worn path is marked all the way, making it relatively easy for first-time visitors to find the sculptures.

If you happen to be visiting on a very calm day, you may be able to book yourself in for a boat trip to Ladonia from Arild, although this is never guaranteed.

There are a few other historic sites dotted around Ladonia, from the stone and concrete National Library to the small cave where prehistoric human remains were once discovered. Granted, your visit to Ladonia may not take very long, but it will definitely be an eye-opening experience!

2) The Conch Republic, Florida Keys, USA

A post shared by Dani & Chris (@corporate_to_cabanas) on Sep 5, 2019 at 6:44am PDT

Ok, so the Conch Republic may be more of a tongue-in-cheek micronation, but it is still deserving of a mention!

This parcel of land lies between the officially defined boundaries of Monroe Country and Dade County, with Key West being designated as the micronation’s capital.

The Conch Republic was declared a micronation in 1982, and while it may only be promoted now as a way to boost local tourism, there was actually a better reason behind its creation…

It all dates back to the roadblock set up by the United States Border Patrol in 1982, causing frustrating inconveniences to people traveling in and out of Key West. Although the city complained, it was ignored, leading to the mayor declaring the Conch Republic an independent nation as a form of protest.

Wondering how big the Conch Republic is?

Officially, it is just two miles long and four miles wide, although many surrounding areas are now also including themselves in the micronation’s boundary because, as mentioned earlier, it is great for tourism. While the Conch Republic may not be that large, it is home to more than 25,000 permanent residents, welcoming in thousands more visitors each year.

What is there to do in the Conch Republic?

The best time to visit is around April 23rd, as this is Independence Day for the micronation. A week-long festival is held each year, with numerous Key West businesses taking part.

Of course, just about any other time of year will still provide you with a memorable experience. A few of the activities you can try here include:

  • Dolphin encounters
  • Tours on a glass bottom boat

Wondering if you would need a special passport to visit the Conch Republic?

No, as it is still a part of the USA. While the micronation does sell passports through their website, these are just souvenirs, and should not be viewed as official travel documents.

South Korea is home to a few different micronations, one of which is Naminara Republic. Although this micronation was officially created in 2006, the other Korean micronations do not recognize it.

Why?

Because Naminara Republic was created solely as a way to boost cultural tourism on the island of Nami. As opposed to the other Korean micronations that are centered around independence, profit is a big motivating factor behind Naminara Republic.

Still, this does not mean that it is any less worthy of a visit. Naminara Republic has its own flag, coins, stamps and insignia. Everyone who visits the micronation also has to purchase a local passport on arrival.

What is there to do in Naminara Republic?

With cultural tourism being the micronation’s main focus, there are numerous cultural attractions set up around the area for visitors to explore. Imagination and creativity is celebrated and promoted here, as is the environment and natural diversity.

Several of the streets around Naminara Republic have been lined with majestic trees, including:

  • Tulip Tree Lane
  • Cherry Tree Lane
  • Gingko Tree Lane
  • Metasequoia Lane
  • Reed Woods Lane

Animals are also allowed to roam freely around Naminara Republic, and you will likely come across everything from squirrels and rabbits to turkeys and geese as you explore the island.

Wondering if Naminara Republic is suitable for kids?

Most definitely! From the Fairy Tale Village to the Imaginary Playground, your children will not only find plenty to do here, but will also likely really thrive.

To really make the most of your visit, book yourself into Hotel Jeonggwanru for a night. Each room in this boutique hotel has been designed by a different artist, craftsman, writer and even singers, offering up some truly creative luxury.

If you would prefer to visit a micronation that is steeped in a fascinating history, Seborga is the place to go. This micronation stretches out for 3,500 acres, making it larger than some of the others on this list. It sits near to the border between Italy and France, and is known for its rich heritage.

Wondering how Seborga became a micronation?

It all comes down a sale that took place in 1729, with the area that is Seborga today never being registered, meaning that it found its way into a legal loophole. This went unnoticed for quite a while, until the 1960s when locals voted for independence, as well as for a new prince of Seborga.

Although the micronation is ruled by a monarchy, this is not a hereditary one, meaning that new people are voted in every seven years.

As you know, Italy loves its sports, and Seborga is no different…

Although the micronation has their own Olympic committee, this isn’t actually recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Their soccer team lies unrecognized too, although they still play matches against other micronations and small nations.

Just like many of the other micronations on this list, Seborga boasts its own national anthem, postage stamps, flag and currency, which is accepted as a form of payment throughout the village.

Curious about Seborga’s population?

Around 300 people currently live in Seborga, but many more visit the micronation each year.

What is there to do in Seborga?

When people visit Seborga, they usually expect it to be a peaceful, laid-back village, but the intense tranquillity here will still really surprise you. It is unusually calm, especially if you are used to life in the big city. The streets here are so quiet that you may even hear your voice echo as you wander through them.

As mentioned above, Seborga is packed with history, and there are a few historical sites that you should definitely not miss out on:

  • Museo Strumenti Musicali Seborga – this museum showcases historic musical instruments that date all the way back to the 18th century
  • Chiesa San Martino – a baroque church from the 17th century
  • Piazza San Martino – the village’s central square, which dates back to Medieval times

Keep in mind that there are only a couple of restaurants in Seborga, as well as just a couple of bed and breakfasts. Fortunately, since this is such a quiet part of the world, last minute bookings are often possible.

5) Principality of Sealand, UK

Life is an adventure. Take risks.

A post shared by Principality of Sealand (@sealandgov) on May 30, 2018 at 7:08am PDT

The British government built a number of fortress islands during the second world war, as a way to protect themselves. Many of these fortresses were actually illegal, meaning that once the war was over, they should have been destroyed. However, several were simply abandoned instead, one of which became home to a local radio station in the early 60’s, as a way to get around broadcasting restrictions.

A Major from the army created the radio station, and also lived on the island, continuously battling with the government over his rights to do so. So, the Major found another fortress that lay just three miles outside of British waters, and, in 1966, declared this to be the independent state of Sealand.

Of course, Sealand has its own anthem, flag, postage stamps and currency, all of which you can find out more about on the micronation’s website.

What is there to do in Sealand?

Before delving into the activities that Sealand offers, it is worth noting that this is not always an easy micronation to visit. You need a special visa in order to access the island, and the micronation is not currently accepting new applications. However, it would still be worth contacting them privately to see if they can help.

If you do manage to gain access to the island, here are a few of the things you can look forward to:

  • The incredible views of England’s coast
  • A tour of the fortress, which includes a chapel, engine room and jail
  • A workout at the island’s tiny gym

How do you get to Sealand?

Usually by boat, but the island also has a helipad that needs to be booked in advance.

Now, if you really love your time in Sealand…

The micronation offers the public the opportunity to purchase a noble rank, such as the title of Lord, Lady, Duke Duchess, Sir or Dame. Many celebrities have actually gotten in on the game too, with the following all holding noble ranks from Sealand:

  • Ed Sheeran
  • George Stroumboulopoulos
  • Jeremy Clarkson
  • Ralf Little

Whether you are looking for somewhere quirky and unusual to visit, or simply want a passport stamp that none of your friends have, these micronations will definitely not disappoint. From the hustle and bustle of the Conch Republic to the eerie calm of Seborga, each of these destinations will truly take you into a completely different world.

Family-Friendly Fine Dining in London

Afternoon tea display at restaurant

If you love fine dining but have young children, treating your family to a gourmet meal can be tricky. After all, many fine dining restaurants simply aren’t equipped to cater to kids, and they often have age restrictions too.

Well, if you happen to be in London, you don’t need to worry. The city is full of family-friendly fine dining restaurants – here are a few of the best to add to your must-try list.

Heddon Street Kitchen, Soho

A post shared by Heddon Street Kitchen (@heddonstkitchen) on Sep 16, 2019 at 4:53am PDT

Are you a fan of Gordon Ramsay?

While many are put off by the celebrity chef’s abrasive personality, there isn’t much to criticize when it comes to the food that he creates.

Ramsay has several restaurants in London, one of which is Heddon Street Kitchen, which you will find in the heart of Soho. The interior features a mix of both vintage and modern elements, and while the vibe may be quite relaxed, the food can definitely be considered gourmet.

What sets Heddon Street Kitchen apart when it comes to kids is the fact that the children’s menu has been designed by Tilly Ramsay, Gordon Ramsay’s daughter. It boasts popular child-friendly classics, from scampi and chips to sticky chicken wings, as well as a make-your-own ice cream bar. As you can imagine, this all goes down pretty well with kids.

What wins the parents over is that children are able to dine for free, picking anything they want from the menu.

Wondering what there is for the adults to eat here?

Well, the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dishes are modern and creative, featuring that distinct Gordon Ramsay twist. Whether you want a rare breed Tomahawk steak, a creamy risotto or a fresh, crisp salad, this restaurant is guaranteed to please.

As an added bonus, Heddon Street Kitchen is located near several family-friendly attractions, from the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum to the famous Hamleys Toy Shop.

Another popular British celebrity chef, Marcus Wareing, along with renowned chef Chantelle Nicholson, are at the forefront of Tredwells. Located in Covent Garden, this is a restaurant with a heavy focus on using seasonal British ingredients, with a menu that is constantly evolving.

If your kids are young foodies, Tredwells is a restaurant that they will absolutely love.

While it does have a regular children’s menu, featuring much-loved classics from pasta to lamb croquettes, the restaurant also offers up a children’s tasting menu, known as the Tredwells Culinary Kids Menu. For a set fee of £17, your child will be treated to a six course gourmet tasting meal, with each course designed to be completely appetizing to children.

Wondering what the child’s tasting menu consists of?

As mentioned above, the dishes change depending on the time of year you visit, but the restaurant’s recent menu is as follows:

  • A mint and apple fizz cocktail
  • Roast carrots
  • Mozzarella with a mild, easy to eat chorizo
  • A Cumbrian bavette
  • A coconut mousse with marinated pineapple and passion fruit
  • Salted caramel ice cream topped with chocolate sauce

As you can see, this isn’t a menu that is going to appeal to all kids out there, but, for those who are aspiring to be foodies just like their parents, this menu will be very much appreciated.

Speaking of parents…

Just like your kids, you can also choose from a regular a la carte menu, or go for a tasting menu, of which they have one containing meat and one designed just for vegetarians. You can also opt for wine pairings to go with each course, elevating the flavors within each dish. If you happen to be in the area on a Sunday, treat your family to Tredwells’ Sunday Roast, with a fantastic choice of proteins to choose from.

Tamarind, Mayfair

In the mood for Indian food?

If so, Tamarind, which can be found in Mayfair, should definitely be on your list. Tamarind was one of the very first Indian restaurants in the world, and the first in London, to receive a Michelin star, and this award was well-deserved.

The food here is delicate and flavorful, but still wonderfully authentic, offering up new and exciting versions of classic Indian dishes.

Now, one thing to keep in mind before visiting…

Tamarind do not offer a children’s menu. However, they do have a good reason for this – the dishes that they create are designed to be shared by the table, meaning that children can simply sample from whatever their parents order. Of course, if you need the spice to be toned down for your kids, the chefs here are more than happy to cook you milder dishes.

The dishes range from curries to grilled dishes to small plates, but if you simply cannot choose from all of the items on the delectable menu, you may be best off going for the Tasting Menu instead. For a set fee of £69 (or £59 for vegetarians), guests will be served a selection of the restaurant’s most exquisite dishes.

Once you’re done eating, make the most of the restaurant’s luxurious location by taking a stroll around Mayfair. Don’t forget to also stop by at the OROGOLD Mayfair store, where you will be able to enjoy product demonstrations, VIP facials and expert skin care advice. And yes, children are most welcome at the store too!

Have you been to the OXO Tower before?

Even if you haven’t, you have likely seen the building, as this is one that is instantly recognizable in London’s skyline. As you can tell from the name, the OXO Tower Restaurant, Bar and Brasserie is located in the OXO Tower, on the eighth floor to be precise. From here, you and your family can enjoy panoramic views across the city, especially if you head out onto the restaurant’s expansive garden terrace.

For the views alone, this is a restaurant that most children usually really enjoy, and the dedicated children’s menu ensures that the food goes down a treat too. The menu features a wide range of child-friendly classic dishes, with the menu differing slightly between the restaurant and the brasserie. Children are also gifted with activity packs on arrival, ensuring that they have plenty to keep them busy while their parents are enjoying their meals.

Wondering what there is for the adults to eat?

All of the dishes here feature seasonal British produce, earning them the reputation for producing some of the best British fine dining dishes in the city. From slow-cooked pork belly to poached lobster to dry-aged beef fillet, just about everyone will find something that they enjoy on this menu. There are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options too, so don’t worry if you are on a meat-free diet.

If you are seeking an iconic London dining experience, afternoon tea is something that you should definitely try. Don’t worry, you won’t have to leave your kids at home, since the OXO Tower Restaurant serves up a special Kid’s Afternoon Tea, designed for children under the age of 12. Dishes include:

  • A banana milkshake shot
  • Finger sandwiches
  • Caramel and sea salt popcorn
  • Fudge brownies
  • Mini scones

In addition to offering up a standard a la carte menu, Céleste also has a seasonal daily menu, featuring the freshest of British produce. From beetroot gazpacho to roasted stone bass to a confit duck leg, these dishes both look and taste absolutely spectacular. To elevate your dining experience even more, opt for the wine pairings, where you will be able to enjoy a different glass of wine with each course.

You are probably thinking…

This doesn’t sound very child-friendly!

Well, just like the ever-changing daily menu for adults, Céleste creates a bespoke children’s menu that changes each day. The children’s dishes are always fresh and flavorful, and while they may sometimes feature a few unusual ingredients, they are all cooked up in a way that children really appreciate.

If you are familiar with New York’s fine dining restaurants, then Balthazar is a name that you have probably heard of before. This restaurant is a New York institution, often with a wait list of up to three months. Well, you won’t need to worry about that at Balthazar London, with this venue usually able to accommodate walk-in diners.

At first glance, you may not think that this is a very child-friendly restaurant, but the liveliness and large size of the brasserie makes it perfect for those more energetic kids.

Of course, in order to properly cater to those little ones, Balthazar London has a dedicated children’s menu that features firm favorites, such as:

  • Macaroni cheese, topped with smoked bacon
  • Spaghetti with a fresh tomato sauce
  • Chicken nuggets served with French fries

For dessert, children can pick from a variety of ice cream and sorbet flavors, with some exciting toppings to add on as well.

What about the adults?

Dishes are French bistro style, with specials that change every day. Another aspect to this restaurant that adults tend to love is the American Whiskey Bar, where you will find whiskey from more than 15 American states, along with incredible classic cocktails.

Want to make a day of it?

Combine your visit to Balthazar London with a trip to the London Transport Museum, which is literally just around the corner from the museum. There are several child-friendly exhibits here, giving kids and adults alike the chance to learn more about London’s transportation systems.

A family-run restaurant that has been serving up modern European dishes since the late 1960’s, Frederick’s is a much-loved London institution. The interior of the restaurant is bright, light and airy, and children are always made to feel extremely welcome.

While the chefs here are always happy to create child-sized version of the adult dishes on the a la carte menu, there is also a dedicated children’s menu available. Kids are able to choose from a three-course meal, with the dishes being classics that children always love. Plus, the babyccino that is included with the children’s meal always helps the young ones to feel more grown up.

For the adults, there are numerous dishes to choose from, with the restaurant famous for its broad menu. Whether you are in the mood for pan-fried scallops, roasted Welsh lamb or breaded goat’s cheese, each of the dishes served up here features fresh and seasonal ingredients, making the most of British produce.

For those of you who love looking at beautiful art…

Frederick’s has a collection well worth checking out. They began with a small selection of Peter Kalkhof paintings, which they first put on display to celebrate the restaurant’s 30th birthday. As you can imagine, their art collection has grown since then, with the Jill Furmanovsky photography pieces being especially popular.

Many people assume that fine dining with kids is next-to-impossible, but this isn’t the case at all…so long as you know where to go! No matter where in London you may be, those who are seeking a family-friendly fine dining restaurant will likely be able to find several to choose from, with the dishes that you will sample being just as beautiful as the restaurants themselves.

Plan a Beach Getaway from London

While London may be one of the busiest capitals in the world, you do not have to travel too far to escape city life. From the popular seaside town of Brighton to the Arabian-looking dunes at Camber Sands, here are a few ideas for those looking to plan a beach getaway from London.

Camber Sands, East Sussex
Less than a one and a half hour train ride from Central London, Camber Sands in East Sussex boasts an impressive sand dune system that is reminiscent of those that you would find in the Middle East. With chestnut fences and marram grasses, this is definitely a picturesque spot of the English coastline. The Kit Kat Café located on the sand is perfect for relaxing and soaking up some rare English sun, while horseback riding and kitesurfing are just a couple of the activities available here.

Camber Sands

Brighton
While Brighton Beach may be more shingle than sand, this is still one of the most popular seaside towns in the country. Loud, bright and kitsch, the atmosphere in Brighton is always a vibrant one, and the attractions here are unbeatable when compared to other seaside destinations. From the refurbished pier that features an arcade, fun fair and plenty more, to the art galleries and quirky bars that can be found throughout town, this is a destination that promises to be fun for the whole family.

West Wittering, Chichester
The beach at West Wittering is wide, sandy and unspoiled, making it no surprise that this has long since been the go-to beach getaway destination for many in the country. The grassy area on the beach is perfect for enjoying a picnic lunch without having to deal with sand in your food, while the wind and kite surfing club is ideal for those who want to enjoy some action on the water. Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, West Wittering Beach is also famous for its incredible views over Chichester Harbour and the South Downs, so be sure to bring your camera!

Botany Bay, Kent
With its towering white cliffs and natural chalk stacks, Botany Bay is a quintessential British beach, and is also one of the most photographed beaches in the country. When the tide is out, this beach is perfect for exploring, as you will find everything from fossils and rock pools to natural wildlife here. However, at high tide, both ends of the beach end up being cut off, so you do need to time your visits carefully. When this happens, there is plenty else to do around town, from a spot of shopping to a game of golf to visiting one of the six other sandy beaches that can be found in Kent.

While many may assume that the beach destinations near London are nothing special, this is definitely not the case. From the quaint and picturesque stretch of sand at West Wittering, to the fun and excitement to be had at Brighton, it is easy to plan a beach getaway from London.

Kid-Friendly London Itineraries

Child having fun

No matter what age your children may be, London is a great city to take them to. Whether you plan to be spending your time in the sophisticated West End, or the edgy and upcoming East End, here are a few kid-friendly itineraries to consider.

West and North London
If you are staying around the West or North end of London, then start your day off at the ZSL London Zoo. The oldest scientific zoo in the world, having opened its doors in 1828, children of all ages love seeing all the animals that are housed here, from the giraffes to the penguins. Since the zoo is right on the doorstep of Regent’s Park, head to the park for a picnic lunch and a bit of exploration. Once you have eaten and relaxed, walk to the south end of the park, where you will find Madame Tussauds. This is a great activity for children, as they will delight in seeing wax statues of all of their favorite celebrities.

East London
To begin your kid-friendly day out in East London, head to the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, which will delight both children and adults with their nostalgic toy collections, as well as the many toys available for children to play with. After the museum, take a stroll around the Dalston Eastern Curve Garden, which is a leafy oasis that has been created on the old Eastern Curve railway line. This is a great opportunity to show your children exactly how their food is grown, which is something that kids in London often do not get to experience. This is also a great spot to grab some lunch, while your children play in the large sandpit outside the café. If the weather is pleasant, head back to Bethnal Green, to the Victoria Park Kid’s Fountain Playground, where the gushing fountains in the Splash Playground will keep your children entertained for quite a while. Finally, if your children love animals, the Lee Valley Riding Centre offers one hour pony trekking sessions for families, and this will take you through the area’s stunning nature reserves and patches of woodland.

Central London
There is no shortage of child-friendly activities to take part in in Central London, with one of the most popular being the London Eye. Make your way there as early as possible in order to avoid the crowds, before taking a stroll along the banks of the river. The Natural History Museum should be your next stop, as there are so many interactive activities here that will enable your kids to really learn about natural history in a hands-on way. Nearby is the V&A Museum of Childhood, which again has plenty of child-friendly daily activities, from treasure hunts to storytelling sessions. If your children enjoy museums, Ripleys Believe it or Not is not too far away, and will no doubt delight them, while those who would prefer to spend some time outdoors can spend the rest of the day exploring the famous London landmarks in the area, from Big Ben to Westminster Abbey.

London is such a kid-friendly city, and you will never be short of activities to do with your children. From the museums of Central London to the nature and wildlife of East London, these are just a few of the child-friendly activities that you will find in the city.

The Totally Thames Festival

Boat races in the River Thames

Padmayogini / Shutterstock.com

Each year in London, a 42-mile stretch of the River Thames bursts into a hive of activity, all thanks to the annual Totally Thames festival. Taking place over the entire month of September, this festival celebrates the Thames with an exciting lineup of arts festivals, community events, river races and other fun-filled activities.

The Great River Race
The city’s annual river marathon, the Great River Race is always a spectacle to watch, as 300 teams from around the world will be competing to become the Traditional Boat Champions of the UK. With everyone from serious athletes in Hawaiian war canoes to Viking longboats filled with recreational rowers wearing fancy dress costumes, this race is worth watching, and, if you follow with it along the race route, you will end up in Richmond, greeted with live music and food stalls.

Floating Dreams
Ik-Joong Kang is one of the most revered artists to have come from South Korea, and Floating Dreams is a major installation of his, placed in the center of the Thames. The piece was created with the use of 500 drawings, collected from the generation of those that were forced to flee North Korea, leaving their homes and loved ones behind. The installation serves as a memorial to those that were divided during the Korean War, and is one of the most powerful pieces that the city has seen in a while.

The Singing Bridge
Artist and composer Claudia Molitor has created a one-of-a-kind musical and historic experience on London’s Waterloo Bridge, in honor of the Totally Thames Festival. Inspired by the surprising history of Waterloo Bridge, the artist put together a 40-minute musical experience, that tells the tale of the way in which the bridge was rebuilt by mostly women during the second World War.

Tall Ships Cruise
Many would argue that London is a city best seen from the water, and the tall ships cruise is an unforgettable way in which to do this. This opportunity is only available for four days, and enables visitors to enjoy a two-hour cruise down the Thames from the Royal Arsenal Pier in Woolwich. These tall ships are most definitely impressive, and give you an idea of what the vessels on the river would have looked like not too long ago.

Barnes Film Festival
The Barnes Film Festival is totally new to the Totally Thames Festival this year, but is an event that is highly anticipated by many. Featuring the work of young filmmakers from all across the UK, there will be viewings available that you will not be able to see anywhere else. In addition to the films presented, there will also be several related workshops, discussions and gatherings, featuring some of the country’s most revered cinematic talent.

Five Stars in London

The Savoy

Michaelpuche / Shutterstock.com

London’s luxury hotels stand out from those in other cities around the world, and this is because they are each embedded with such a deep sense of history and tradition, with many of them retaining characteristic features that date back to their Victorian and Edwardian days. From the townhouses of Brown’s to the historic Art Deco architecture of The Dorchester, these are some of the finest hotels in London.

Brown’s Hotel
Consisting of 11 townhouses just off Piccadilly, Brown’s Hotel was founded over 175 years ago, and has quite the unique history. Not only was it where Rudyard Kipling completed the Jungle Book, and where Agatha Christie spent many nights, but it was also from here that Alexander Graham Bell made the world’s first ever phone call. The hotel was renovated in 2005, but has retained many of its original features, but updated this with modern amenities, such as the interactive entertainment in each of the guest rooms and the plush marble bathrooms. When it comes to dining, guests have the option of the traditional tea room, or the hotel’s innovative British restaurant, complete with cocktail bar.

The Dorchester
The Dorchester’s Art-Deco building dates all the way back to 1931 and is situated on Park Lane, one of the most prestigious addresses in London. Each guest room is tastefully luxurious, filled with fabrics that have been specially commissioned, one-of-a-kind antique furniture pieces and the most comfortable of beds. When it comes to their dining options, the Dorchester is home to the only restaurant in the country that holds three Michelin stars, with its French cuisine promising to be some of the best you have ever tasted. The Dorchester Spa is another highlight of the hotel, and their range of treatments are beautifully rounded off with a visit to the Spatisserie for a glass of vintage champagne.

The Savoy
A world famous hotel, the Savoy has had a variety of influences over time, from English Edwardian touches to Art Deco flare, and it has managed to retain and combine these in a truly unique way. The hotel’s rooms and suites offer views out across some of the most famous of London landmarks, but it is the dining options that really set The Savoy apart from its competition. The hotel has always placed an emphasis on fine dining, ever since world-class chef Auguste Escoffier first set this standard in 1889. Gordon Ramsay’s Savoy Grill is one of the most popular restaurants at the Savoy, featuring a British grill menu with some French influences. Kaspar’s Seafood Bar and Grill is where guests go when they are after something slightly more informal, while those who want a sense of tradition, as well as one of the best roast dinners they will have ever tasted, head to Simpson’s in the Strand and the Knight’s Bar. The Savoy is also home to the American Bar, the oldest cocktail bar in the city, and is constantly pushing boundaries when it comes to innovations in mixology.

London is home to hotels that are not only some of the finest in the country, but also in the world, offering a level of high-class luxury that simply cannot be experienced elsewhere. With their history, tradition and thoughtful personal touches, you definitely will not go wrong by choosing one of these five-star hotels to stay at.

London’s Spring Art Exhibits

Exhibit in London

ElenaChaykinaPhotography / Shutterstock.com

London’s art scene is always thrilling, and this spring sees some truly exciting exhibits hitting the capital. From pieces by an underground cartoonist to historic Dutch paintings, these are some of the hottest art exhibitions in London this spring.

R Crumb: Art and Beauty
Robert Crumb was considered to be the most famous underground cartoonist in the world, although his underground status has been slowly diminishing over recent years as the artist has begun the transition into the world of art galleries. Crumb’s latest exhibit, held at the David Zwirner gallery in West London, features 54 pieces of work that the artist has been creating since the mid 90’s, many of which put Crumb’s erotic imagination on display. Women are the focal point of many of his pieces, and a number of recognizable sports stars are on display, as well as snapshots and drawings of everyday inspiring women on the streets of London.

Dutch Flowers
Flowers are not just visually pleasing, but are in fact symbols for everything from passion to love to sympathy to celebrations, and the Dutch Flowers exhibit is all about these beautiful botanicals. Located at London’s National Gallery, the display of paintings dates back to the seventeenth and eighteenth century, and while the exhibition may be small, with just 22 paintings in an intimate setting, the talent on display is extraordinary. From microscopically accurate representations of plant life to vases overflowing with blooms, Dutch Flowers mirrors the inspiring balance between nature and art, while also depicting the many different concepts that flowers symbolize.

Royal Academy of Arts

Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse
Gardens have always served as immense forms of inspiration for artists all over the world, and this is especially true for the Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Avant Garde movements. Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse can be found at the Royal Academy of Arts, and features a collection of work from world-famous artists. Dating from the 1860’s to the 1920’s, pieces from the likes of Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, Matisse, Cezanne and more are on display, depicting exactly how the modern garden has shaped the work of these master artists. Many of the pieces here are classics, and, when displayed with others that also focus on the same subject matter, the overall effect is most definitely powerful.

Conceptual Art in Britain
There is plenty of debate about conceptual art, and while many may only associate it with the past decade, conceptual art actually arose over forty years ago. British artists played a huge role in the development and evolution of conceptual art, and this exhibit depicts this impact in a clear and concise manner. Key pieces of British conceptual art are on display, with the overall exhibition aiming to make conceptual art more intelligible and appreciated by the general public.

London has long since been an epicenter for art and culture, and the city is constantly home to some of the most exciting art exhibitions around. From classic pieces by world-famous master painters to modern British conceptual art, these exhibits are the highlight of London’s art scene this spring.

Local Eateries in London

Savoy, London

Each of London’s neighborhoods is packed with amazing restaurants, and recent years have seen an increase in the popularity of the more local joints. From Michelin-quality dishes created from seasonal British ingredients to a historic chophouse that has been around since the 1800’s, these are some of London’s best local eateries.

Quality Chop House, Farringdon
First opened in 1869, the Quality Chop House is not only a much-loved local restaurant, but also has a wine bar, a shop and a butcher on site. The restaurant still retains certain features from when it was first opened, including the classic polished wooden booths that line the dining room. Each day, the restaurant receives their order of fresh produce before writing up the daily menus, with each dish inspired by their latest ingredients. From the Wild Garlic Soup to the Hereford Mince on Dripping Toast to the Devon Crab, each of the dishes makes full use of seasonal ingredients, resulting in a truly British culinary experience.

Lardo, Hackney
Lardo is a must-visit for any pork aficionados, as the restaurant only uses native breed pigs that have been bred specifically for their signature dishes. While this industrial-chic pizzeria may produce Italian-inspired dishes, the majority of ingredients used are quintessentially British, from the fennel pollen to the English asparagus to the rabbit. Of course, ordering their Lardo pizza is essential, as these melt-in-your-mouth strips of meat are what you will return to the restaurant for time and time again.

Claude’s Kitchen, Parsons Green
A stylish, modern British eatery, Claude’s Kitchen first opened its doors in 2013, and it did not take long for the restaurant to quickly become a local favorite. Again, this is a restaurant that creates menus inspired by British ingredients, with innovative dishes of Michelin standard. With fresh fish brought in daily from the south of Cornwall, and all meat being free-range and organic, the freshness of the ingredients plays a huge part in the final outcome. Whether you opt for the Octopus and Bream served with blood orange, Campari and seaweed, or the Guinea Fowl served with morels, popcorn grits and wild garlic, Claude’s Kitchen gives you the opportunity to taste some of the very best of the new wave of conceptual and creative British cooking.

Marianne, Notting Hill
Small and intimate with seating for just fourteen, Marianne is considered to be more of a micro-restaurant, and is run by one of the best female chefs in the city. The menu features classic, fine dining dishes, each with an elegant and feminine touch, and only uses the freshest of seasonal ingredients to guarantee the utmost quality. With dishes such as the Hebridean Scallop Ceviche with Blood Orange, the Highland Wagyu Fillet, and the Mille-Feuille of Wild Mushrooms, Truffles and Hollandaise, this is a great restaurant to visit if you want to sample classic British fare.

London is filled with restaurants from every corner of the globe, but it is the local British restaurants that really stand out. With thoughtful dishes, fresh and seasonal ingredients, and talented chefs, these eateries are a must-visit the next time you find yourself in the city.

London Nightlife

Woman dancing in a nightclub

London is known for having some of the best nightlife in the world, and a large part of its reputation comes from the way in which its nightlife options are so wonderfully diverse. From classic British pubs to sleek cocktail bars to high-end nightclubs, London‘s nightlife is one-of-a-kind, just like the city itself.

Sophisticated Cocktail Bars
London is home to some innovative cocktail bars, each serving up incredible drinks that guarantee to dazzle each of your senses. White Lyan in Hoxton focuses on unusual ingredients, from their blackcurrant paint to their electric stonefruit brandy, resulting in cocktails unlike anything you have ever tasted. The Experimental Cocktail Club in Chinatown is a hidden speakeasy-style bar, and uses a variety of vintage spirits in their concoctions, while the Beaufort Bar at the Savoy specializes in bubbly champagne cocktails. The Connaught Bar is a classic London icon and features an extensive martini menu, as well as drinks made tableside, while Oskar’s Bar in Fitzrovia is another that focuses on innovative drinks, using beer and cider as a base for many of their creations.

Dance the Night Away
Some of the most iconic and notorious nightclubs in the world can be found in London, ideal for when you just want to let loose and enjoy a wild night on the town. Fabric is one of the city’s landmark clubs, as is the Ministry of Sound, with both of them being an absolute must for any dance music fans out there. Egg London is another one of the larger clubs in the city and now has a 24-hour license, striking a great balance between a style and warehouse raving. For a tropically upscale club, head to Mahiki, which is a known favorite amongst British royalty, while Funky Buddha is a central London club that oozes Eastern charm. Chakana in Marylebone is a favorite with celebrities, with everyone from the likes of David Beckham to Pixie Geldoff being spotted here, as is Boujis, which is an extremely exclusive private members club that always has a line of paparazzi waiting outside.

Pub in London

Classy Pubs
Pubs are a strong part of British culture, and London definitely has no shortage of them. In central London, Counting House, which is an old Victorian bank that has been converted into a pub, is always popular due to its elegance and ornateness, while the Ape & Bird is a gorgeous stripped down drinking den that is well stocked with Italian liqueur. Bradley’s Spanish Bar is more pub than bar, and while it may seem unassuming, their Spanish wines really stand out, while Harp, situated in vibrant Covent Garden, is an award-winning pub that remains open well into the night.

Whether you are looking for a quiet pub to enjoy some local beers, a stylish bar to try out some exciting cocktails, or a sprawling nightclub to lose yourself in as you dance the night away, London will definitely not disappoint. No matter what you may be after, each of the city’s neighborhoods will be able to provide this in their own way, and it will not be long before you too fall in love with the nightlife scene that this historic city has to offer.
