Dating all the way back to 1963, Doctor Who is a television favorite all over the world, as well as being a significant part of British pop culture. Produced by the BBC, the show was filmed in the UK, making this the country to visit if you are a Doctor Who fan. OROGOLD takes a look at some of the top Doctor Who attractions in the UK.
The Doctor Who Experience, Cardiff Bay
Since the majority of Doctor Who is filmed in and around Cardiff, it only makes sense for one of the top Doctor Who attractions to be located right next to the BBC’s Doctor Who studios. The experience is truly unique, and begins with The Interactive Experience, where visitors can enjoy an interactive adventure through space and time with the Doctor. The Exhibition Hall can then be toured, for visitors to take a look at the largest collection of Doctor Who props, costumes and sets in the world. The Doctor Who Experience also offers special tours at certain times of the year. These include The Official Doctor Who Filming Locations Tour, a walking tour around Cardiff Bay, and The TARDIS Tour, offering visitors the unforgettable opportunity to visit the genuine set of the TARDIS. OROGOLD reminds you that these tours are not offered throughout the year, so be sure to check in advance if you are interested in taking one.
Tardis Police Box, London
For those of you who are only quickly stopping off in the city, but still want to get your fix of Doctor Who, the Tardis Police Box, located just outside of Earls Court Underground Station, is where you should go. An exact replica of the current version that is used in the show, visitors can take photographs around it, and it is absolutely free to go and experience. However, since it is in such a public place, it is often a magnet for photographers and other fans of the show, so OROGOLD advises that you remain patient and wait for your turn.
Doctor Who Walking Tour of London, London
London has many different settings from the show, both new and old, from episodes such as The Invasion to more recent ones, such as Rose and The Bells of Saint John. The Doctor Who Walking Tour of London is one that OROGOLD would recommend if you are in the capital and want a short but fascinating experience. The tour, offered by Brit Movie Tours, lasts for two and a half hours, and will take you through 15 Doctor Who locations. From exploring the location where the two Dalek factions battle it out in Remembrance of the Daleks to exploring the Earth Prison’s stairwells and passageways from Frontier in Space, this tour enables fans to see these locations up close and take plenty of souvenir photographs. Throughout the tour, fans will also be able to learn more about how certain episodes were made, as well as enjoy trivia from the show.
While the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff may be the best way to immerse yourself into the show, don’t worry if you can’t make it to Wales, as the London tour is just as interesting. If you are planning to visit one of the attractions during a busy time, OROGOLD highly recommends pre-booking your tickets online to avoid having to spend time in a queue on the day.
